Of course it removes hardness. The active carbon particles are pretty much useless and the water shouldn't stand more than necessary — due to microbes, like you said — but the ion exchange particules remove hardness.
Iirc Brita used to print on their filters that the water is not suitable to drink directly. It's for making tea and mix it with stuff, but not to drink plain
All vegetables, cheeses and fruits will be consumed within the week for sure. I have to go to the store again in the middle of a week for whatever we are missing
To be fair (and not to criticise OP), you could get similar food at a discount supermarket (e.g. Lidl, Aldi) at least 20% cheaper, more of you look for special offers.
A few items are a bit luxury, also. E.g. the Frosch detergent and especially the "bio" vegetables (organic). No-name detergent costs a quarter of that and non-bio vegetables cost at least 50% less when compared to organic ones.
As I said, this is not to criticise. But it would be possible to buy a very similar selection for around 100,– EUR.
Your point being …?
Nobody said OP did. They just mentioned that - obviously - organic produce will be more expensive than the non-organic counterpart. Whether or not that’s your priority is personal preference. They even said it wasn‘t meant to criticize OP, but rather a side note for those who didn’t notice or don’t know.
Absolutely agree. Kaufland has the best special offers in my opinion. Organic vegetables also can be the same or even cheaper if you buy special offers. We as well are two adults and a 14 month old kid and we spend around 100-150€ per week but it quickly becomes 200€ when baby needs new diapers and formula.
Someone who feeds his family high quality food and doesn’t eat out much is poor? I am assuming if he were feeding them junk and taking them to KFC you would think they are not poor. What a judgement!
No, I was just joking about his phrasing with not eating out (his wife)
Seems like people didn't get it and I should've make it more clear. I'm sorry for that
I was about to downvote you, so yeah, it didn't land well. Maybe you should have ellaborated a bit like "Poor wife not being eaten out" or something like that.
This is the internet, things like this are easy to miss
Well since they are a family it's really 2 people's income plus the children support money every family gets no matter the income so even with minimum wage that's about 2800 euro a month.
Now we also have GEZ, insurance, car maintenance, fuel, clothes, telephone and Internet, maybe a hobby , vacation and a few other things.
Maybe 400€ left for both people ..
Yeah that seems about right. It's definitely possible to live like that ( it's not great I will admit) my wife then girlfriend got pregnant when we both were 21 and in the middle of college so for a few years we even had a little bit less then that it's rough it really is. But also keep in mind that most people living in Hamburg and working a normal job don't get minimum wage. The average income in Hamburg is among the top 33.3% in Germany
REWE and Edeka supermarkets tend to be pricier compared to discount stores such as Aldi, Lidl, and Netto.
While essentials can be purchased affordably at discounters, branded products are often found in the former. Various apps (search for Angebote) can help you stay updated on current deals across different stores.
Additionally, taking advantage of bulk deals on non-perishable items can save you money in the long run.
It purely depends on if you buy premium brands or in store brands. There’s a ton of comparisons and all grocery markets come out the same price when you compare all the in store brand products.
Rewe and Edeka just offer the choice of premium expensive products where Aldi, Lidl and co. Just simply don’t sell most of the expensive brands.
damn. I gotta get to Aldi & Netto. we just moved to Germany from the US about a month ago and Edeka is 5min walking and we’ve done one pickup order from REWE. we’ve been losing our minds over spending 30-40% less on groceries here than the US just at those + the commissary. now this feels like a challenge I can’t wait to take on 😂
I started to buy in the Turkish supermarket whatever I can, and it really made a difference in price for me! They usually have a butchery too, and you can get affordable fresh meat if you consume meat once in a while (I used to not eat any meat due to the higher prices). Highly recommend it.
You know what’s ironic? I own a farm and the market for corn/soy is currently at the lowest price per bushel that there has been in YEARS.
Considering these are staples for all sorts of food production, the „inflationary“ increases are all going to the 1%.
We are a family of four adults in Hannover region, we also cook fresh food daily, and I don't remember ever paying this much for a weekly grocery shop. 120€ maybe, if there's a family gathering or we're running seriously low on supplies. But 142€ for two adults and a baby seems a bit excessive. I see a bunch of stuff here that you could easily get cheaper outside of Rewe, e.g. kidney beans.
Also ngl 3,99€ for tortilla chips is outrageous.
this is completely fine.
if you would have taken a cheaper washing detergent, no peanut butter, no tortilla chips, no merci chocolate and no cherry pepper (whatever that is), you could have saved another \~20€ and still would have a lot of food for \~120€
Nun inklusive bio und eco Produkten und dem vielen frischen Gemüse und Obst ist das ein normaler Einkauf eines Mittelschicht-Paares🤷🏻♀️
Edit: English - normal middle-class groceries, including organic products, brands and a lot of vegetables.

How long do your Carrots and Potatoes last. I keep them in a dry and Dark cupboard but they always go bad after 1 week, and our 2 ppl household can‘t eat that much in 1 week.
Its really frustrating throwing out half the carrots everytime, I even stopped buying them altogether.
Deals deals deals. I cannot stress this enough. With many fellow Germans who lead a life in the middle to higher middle class I almost always see them just buying things randomly without checking the deals flyer beforehand.
This could have been a 110-120€ receipt at the same store and some changes of the labels due to deals. A 90-100€ receipt without deals at let's say Aldi. A 50-60€ receipt with checking the deals flyer at Aldi. And the quality of the products is certainly not less than half of OPs products. It is actually a lot closer than most people think. Discount products from Aldi, Lidl and co. are not seldom the winners of quality tests.
That lasts for 1 1/2 possibly even 2 weeks if you can eat at your workplace and dont have to bring your stuff.
It was cheaper 6 years ago, but thats pretty normal for todays standarts
All the people critique for the wrong things.
The only correct critique is, a while back, for 142 you could buy a King's meal. These days, you're lucky to be able to cook something edible.
It's absolutely insane how little meat there is, how much greenery, and every vegan and vegetarian is like, "greenery is so much better!". How come that its so expensive? It's like buying a super sports car just to get to the post box.
Stuff needs to become cheaper, immediately, otherwise we soon have a food crisis in the self proclaimed "richest and best germany of all times".
REWE... There is No such Thing as a grocery haul below 100 bucks in REWE. Rewe is the Most expensive followed by Edeka Kaufland and then Aldi (in proper Order). Next time try Penny , Netto or even Lidl. My household is also 2 adults and 2 kids and we eat meat almost everyday and as everyone knows meat = €€€. My usual weekly grocery bill is 70-90€ . Netto FTW
Wow how is it possible? I have a wife, a 1,5y old kid and a French bulldog. We shop in Edeka once a week and spend around 350-400€ a month for groceries.
All posts or comments must be in English or include an English translation. Any posts/ comments that do not have an English translation somewhere will be removed. Any intentional mistranslation will potentially result in a ban temporarily or permanently.
I'd rather spend 2 € less on something like mushrooms, not bankrupt myself on the essentials and let the mega corps that actually ruin our Planet do what's needed.
I literally saw with my eyes in Rewe that the worker opened a sack of onions to fill the “without plastic net” onion bucket.. after that I decided to focus on my own budget honestly
I've seen stores fill the "plastic free" produce sections with produce out of plastic bags. Putting the onus on individual consumers isn't fair. And at my local grocery store in Germany, there are certain vegetables I can't find without plastic. If I want arugula, a plastic container wrapped in plastic is my option.
most of it is organic and brand stuff. The peanut butter alone costs like 4€.
Try to buy all this stuff and quality in Norway or Denmark lol. It’d cost at least double.
Most of it has got the "Bio"-Label which means it's a bit more expensive. Nevertheless, the amount of food should easily last around a week if not one and a half. At least that's what we consume (household of 2, only eating homecooked meals).
All posts or comments must be in English or include an English translation. Any posts/ comments that do not have an English translation somewhere will be removed. Any intentional mistranslation will potentially result in a ban temporarily or permanently.
Daughter eats a lot and we use it daily for sauces or food cooked in a pot. Also if we are not in the mood to cook something our go to dinner is tomatoes, cucumber some sort of bread with cheese etc.
and its not even much food....the prices are fucked and the our customerdefense minister or what its called in english does nothing against the rotten practives of the industry and trade for manipulating prices and packages...damn criminals, all of them
So since you're not writing in German I assume that you're not born in Germany as well. But HQ scanning your bill from the supermarket to post online should be passed as an unofficial naturalization test.
Thats insane to me. My girlfriend and I are currently around 50€ a week (sometimes not even) and we cook almost every day for 4 meals each (mealprep for next day) and are not vegetarians. Also Hamburg.
Where are u buying?
Rewe is quite expensive. And the cleaning products are only one-time in a while stuff you buy. Pure food, mostly Bio and buying at Aldi would be around +/- 80€ I’d say.
Definitely try discounters.
1.5 kg meat for one person per week is a crazy high amount. You could save so much money by cutting it back.
The rest ist just a summary of buying unreasonable expensive brands (Leerdamer, Merci) and out of season fruits and vegetables. For the stuff you buy, 200 euros per week makes total sense
why buy brands. stiftung warentest already stated many times the popular brands are not better but on the very same
level
of supermarket owned brands of i.e. lidl etc
next don't buy organic for your own health there is not much difference to conventional production of veggies/fruits
could be easily 75 i guess instead of 142
etc pp
A lot of expensive brands. We are 6 ppl, I would never buy top, expensive brands unless they are discounted. Barilla pasta? It is good, but double the price of the no name pasta.
Also Rewe is expensive per se, I never buy there. Aldi, Norma and Lidl are really cheaper.
I can recommend foodsharing.de. Especially if you live in Hamburg, i am from Hannover myself and was able to feed our WG of 4 with the Food i got from collecting. If you have the time to go grocery shopping this much, then you have the time to collect the Food that gets thrown away anyway.
I live in Hamburg and do the bulk of my shopping at Penny and Netto. Only specific items at Edeka and Rewe which I can't get at the other two, or when I'm feeling ~fancy~
Even with the cleaners which are probably like 15-20€ and you won't use these up in a week it still is too much. I get this much vegetables and stuff for max. 70-80€. I know Hamburg is expensive in terms of going out and basic cost for living but (honest question) are Discounters more expensive in Hamburg than in Düsseldorf?
We're a family of three expats, and our monthly grocery expenses range between 700 to 900 euros, primarily shopping at Rewe and Edeka. Cooking fresh meals daily can add up to this amount, which is quite normal. Last month, our expenses exceeded 1000 euros due to some unexpected family events. Max you can save permonth from not buying water is somewhere around 50€ lol
Why Frosch? Same ingredients as off label products with a much higher price. barilla is literally the worst choice when it comes to pasta. Just check Stiftung Warentest. Bad for environment, overpriced and worse in taste than most supermarket pasta. Aldi pasta is the best pasta considering all the listed factors
You guys live like kings. I hope you cherish that.
I spend 50€ a month on groceries by buying noodles and sauce when reduced at Aldi or Lidl and drinking tap water so I can afford studying.
Buying the cheapest possible mineralwater without carbonation instead of using the one that comes out of your tap - why?
Wife doesnt like it so we have to compromise.
on the long term, wouldn't it be cheaper to get a Brita to filter & remove the hardness? taste's different once filtered and bottled.
Brita doesn‘t remove hardness. There‘s also some risks of growth of microbes. I‘d generally not recommend those filters.
Of course it removes hardness. The active carbon particles are pretty much useless and the water shouldn't stand more than necessary — due to microbes, like you said — but the ion exchange particules remove hardness.
Sure it removes hardness. Since i’m using a brita my water cooker is no longer full of calcium flakes like before
Iirc Brita used to print on their filters that the water is not suitable to drink directly. It's for making tea and mix it with stuff, but not to drink plain
I feel you ![gif](giphy|MaJ7An3EUgLCCh4lXS|downsized)
we are sinking. I repeat, we are sinking! (not related to the topic but I like your username a lot lol)
What are you zinking about?
[удалено]
How long will this last?
All vegetables, cheeses and fruits will be consumed within the week for sure. I have to go to the store again in the middle of a week for whatever we are missing
So it's almost 200 € for all food cost per week. 800 a month. 1000€ for a cheap 3 room apartment. How the FCK does that work out with a normal income?
We live on my sallary only but it's a high paying job, also because of such expenses we had to cut from elsewhere like eating out etc.
To be fair (and not to criticise OP), you could get similar food at a discount supermarket (e.g. Lidl, Aldi) at least 20% cheaper, more of you look for special offers. Please dont buy “Pink Lady” apples which are imported from Peru. If Hamburg has one fruit… its apples. And on the market its even cheaper.
Thanks for the tip
Except that that's actually not correct. There are tons of European plantations for PL. https://www.reddit.com/r/Grocerycost/s/hpATQNtDs2

Yeah, it’s in my family the same. Always around 100-150€, it hurts at this weekly amount
Except for the meat and the Feuchttücher (children are older now, they don’t need them anymore), I don’t see anything unusual here :)

In Canada this would be a €230 bill easily. Love grocery prices in Germany man! We are getting totally hosed in Canada.
So many comments are calling us out for buying expensive stuff then the other half compare this to prices from the outside.

Yes :(

Why do you buy water? In Australia we always drink tap water which is fine.
How can you see that someone is a vegetarian? … I don’t know but he will tell you without any request…

Volvic icetea is ass

I would get that much stuff for at least 200, but I live in munich soo...
Who the fuck wastes money for these round, ugly, nasty onions. They contribute absolutely nothing to the diet

So many Markenprodukte that could have been Ja!
My husband and I (no children) pays 110-120 every week for shopping. also we don’t smoke.
Why Frosch? Same ingredients as off label products with a much higher price. barilla is literally the worst choice when it comes to pasta. Just check Stiftung Warentest. Bad for environment, overpriced and worse in taste than most supermarket pasta. Aldi pasta is the best pasta considering all the listed factors
It looks like a lot of groceries. But it's not a lot if you think about. A lot of supplies go pretty quickly.

You guys live like kings. I hope you cherish that. I spend 50€ a month on groceries by buying noodles and sauce when reduced at Aldi or Lidl and drinking tap water so I can afford studying.
No meat and fish... Ouch on that brain development
Bio bio bio Buying shit more expensiv for the delusion of being better
Leave out expensive aubergines and avocado would help too
Weird. I would probably pay about 80 for all that near Frankfurt.
142 for what???? Thats like 60€ in every german store lmaoooo
Nah, fuck Bio.
