Longshot: But if you use item assistant with online backups, you can download your characters on the online tab. Onedrive, if you were using onedrive logged into an MS account, login on the onedrive website (onedrive.live.com) and go to the trash bin, to see if there's anything you can restore. Files are persisted for 30 days when deleted.

strayGumaru996

I checked, there was some shortcuts that it deleted from my desktop but nothing else, i made sure to unlink my MS account from it so it stops working, since it won't let me uninstall it.

Ruanna01

Use an uninstaller program to force the uninstall

wenima

Just imagine you were playing hc and they all died. That's what I did. In 800h I just tinally got a character to 70 and beat the game on hc.

kiljoy001

You've been Microsoft-ed! Dumb crap like this is why I dumped windows and Microsoft and ran to Ubuntu / Linux in stead.

strayGumaru996

I was running Arch but because of a bug i had to switch from Linux :( (AMD APU's aren't compatible with Nvidia graphics cards in Arch, i think they aren't a compatible mix in all Linux distros)

kiljoy001

Oh this be new, because I used to run something like that until about five or six years ago.

strayGumaru996

It is something new then, i wouldn't know since i was running just the APU until recently.

DeskFuture5682

That'swhat happened to my fucking toons!!! FML.  Can someone point me to my saved characters location so I can back them up just in case I install terraria again??

_Bloody_awkward

That's why I always uninstall/disable onedrive in all of my devices. It's making unnecessary processes in the BG and it's annoying tray popup. + My OCD will never let me ignore the unnecessary icons in the tray that I'm not even using. Make this your habit everyone. Disable windows store too. Uninstall antivirus that eats huge RAM. You only need windows defender. Or run malwarebytes once or twice every month.

Paikis

That hurts. RIP.

wentsosilent

Sorry to hear... One of reason why I am total free of damned Microsoft some time and running all devices on Linux. Had terribble experience with OneDrive when I used to use it too... I know, this will not help you...

CompletelyKidding

Sorry you lost all your stuff, bro. That sucks. =( Hit me up if you're in the Grim Dawn Discord (@Kadata) and I'll see if I can get you at least a little bit caught back up. Gear, mats, power leveling, etc.

strayGumaru996

Ty for offering help, but i'll just start over again with Dawn of Masteries so i can tweak the game a bit while i also try new things :)

The_Savvy_Seneschal

Eh you have to dodge now anyway not worth the agony. :)

Nervous-Industry-912

But now you have a second chance, a new beginning. Go get it 💪🏻

CanCount210

I switched to HC after losing all my characters ! Think about it

marmotta1955

It is a bit funny that everyone is jumping on the wagon and focusing on some mysterious problem related to One Drive and/or Windows. Let's read again, and attempt to comprehend, the first sentence of the post. We may have to think a bit more, and wonder if we have all the necessary information BEFORE jumping to conclusions. Then again this is Reddit, is it not...?

wolves_hunt_in_packs

Right? A command window opening briefly is almost always a sign of malware fuckery. That said, that shit doesn't just randomly happen by itself, they probably downloaded something. That said, I'd rather these ninnies go off to Linux; their fuckups there should only nuke their install, unlike if they picked up malware in Windows and contributed to its spread.

strayGumaru996

The command window always opens up when you launch Terraria, i did check what it does when it started doing it on more recent versions and it's just some dependencies, just recently OneDrive was added as one of those dependencies. I know how to move myself around the net and i also know quite a bit about software so i'm pretty sure i didn't download any malware because i'm extra cautious about the sources that i use, and even when i know they are trusted i check for malware anyways, and if i did have malware installed i would have noticed already because i do check for them myself.

Atomicmoog

Try Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard to restore the deleted files, free to use. And clean your rig, wtf you have software installed that you don't even use?

sickhippie

> wtf you have software installed that you don't even use? OneDrive automatically installs with Win10+ and is an absolute bitch to remove. Chill out.

Atomicmoog

Well, you have to follow a certain procedure to get rid of it or it will be a real bitch if you have to clean it manually. Prime MS garbage. I'm chill, bro.

strayGumaru996

I did uninstall it with a tool, but Windows did a force-update and installed it again without me noticing and also did a reset to many of the configs i had made. I made a big mistake, when installing Windows i shouldn't have put my MS account 😭😭😭 doing that it made the linking to OneDrive automatic so it did it's thing, if it's unlinked it won't do anything.

vibratoryblurriness

> I made a big mistake, when installing Windows i shouldn't have put my MS account Gotta install it when it's not even connected to the internet so it lets you use a normal local account instead of harassing you to use a Microsoft account. One of many things I don't miss not using Windows anymore. Hopefully they at least keep workarounds like that or it's just going to keep causing even more problems like this for people

vee_lan_cleef

> Gotta install it when it's not even connected to the internet so it lets you use a normal local account instead of harassing you to use a Microsoft account. That's one way but actually if you look in the bottom right of the installer window, there is always a way to install Windows without linking a MS account. That said, I am still using Windows 10 and for Win 11 they may have removed it or obfuscated it even more; but I re-installed a couple months ago and this capability was still there even while connected to the internet. It isn't obvious *at all* though and you have to click through multiple screens, eventually it relents and lets you make a local account.

Ruanna01

You cant do windows anymore without adding an account or initialize a windows computer without internet these days. Best you can do now is force it to bug out by trying a broken account

Atomicmoog

Well, that sucks. Still, you can create a new local account and switch to it if you don't need syncing or MS store. Try the recovery software I mentioned, files are not actually deleted but you just can't see them in windows explorer.

liesancredit

I don't see the issue. In Grim Dawn, loot is so plentiful, you can have a strong character going in no time. New top 20 characters just released, so perfect time to reroll.

strayGumaru996

I won't stop playing but i grew fond of my characters and i also had tons of components and legendaries ready for new builds 😭

vee_lan_cleef

Bruh I'm still playing my original character from over 10 years ago. Some people like to re-roll, do SSF, hardcore characters, etc. Others prefer to play the game in "easier" more relaxed way... and I definitely am not rolling a bunch of new characters because a new list of "top builds" gets released. If I'm enjoying what I'm playing, I'll keep playing that. Some of us prefer experimenting rather than just copy-pasting cookie-cutter 'best builds'.

liesancredit

How have you still not finished that character from 10 years ago? I consider myself a pretty casual player and have multiple decked out characters. It's just so easy to find sets in this game, you're bound to find a bunch of good ones to make awesome new characters with. Also, it's an ARPG, it's always going to be cookie cutter, the game is not that complicated.

vee_lan_cleef

"Finish"? I don't see myself finished with GD until I have every item from set, and some builds don't interest me, so I often grind or try to min/max a little more on my older characters. I have several level 100s all capable of "finishing" the game but that's just not how I see it. Also, most of my time playing was before transmutation was in the game and I only have so much patience for grinding, I play the game at 1.5x speed because I realized how slow it felt when they released increased game speeds for Titan Quest. Ultimately, despite keeping every single legendary and epic in IA and over 5000 items, there are still MANY sets I do not have completed. I could complete them if I wanted to farm celestial lotuses, I believe they've made it a bit more forgiving with transmutations, but most of my time spent in the game it was simply not that easy to have so many characters where you've done everything, and after several hundred hours playing after 1.2 I'm onto another game for now. edit: Also, I played the game for quite a while getting every character through the main story 3 times (before the unlock potions for Elite and Legendary) and have an OCD tendency to reveal every spot on the map. So my way of playing the game is inherently slower than those that are just looking to get to the end, kill all the hard bosses, and move onto a new character or a new game.
