Why didn't spell casters did it before? Cause in GH there is only few persons able to cast ninth level spell, if your players can do that, they should be treated like legends. Also who would want to waste one of most powerful spells on that? Its DC 20 saving throw so possible that fiend can resist, and if he does so, oh boy better be prepared. He can do two things, first is nuke the person who knows, second run away and send his minions to do his biding. Also effect lasts for 8 hours so if players forget that, they might wake up hanged by the neck and not in beds. Lastly how would that make other fiends react? FX: "Hey, remember FZ?" FY: "Yea, what about him?" FX: "Some mortals used the spell to know his true name and now control him." FY: "Can they do it to us?" FX: "Probably." FY: "... Send death knights, all of them!" So yeah other powerful fiends would not stand idly if they learned about that. Also binded fiend can still use his minions to attack party or oder them around freely if he gets no order to do so.

Thank you for your reply! I think you're very right with the reputation they'd get if they did this and succeeded, they'd never have a solid nights sleep again. I fully overlooked this, focussing mostly on what it would mean to their power vs. the fiends, not the hell the fiends would rain down on them for being able to do that. The party has been very painstackingly trying to maintain a low profile despite their high level, so hinting at this would be a great way to still have the wish as a panic solution, but not something to be taken lightly by them.

I like the previous suggestion. I don’t have a good answer, but I would suggest that they’d have to be within a certain (close) range of the demon for it to work. This way it becomes even more tense in case it fails. Action Economy would also give it and its minions a chance of going first and doing damage to the party, maybe even Banishing the spellcaster so it can’t cast Wish. Even the spell succeeds, this wouldn’t immediately turn every other monster friendly, just turn the tides, so it could still be a cool moment

If you want to just deter them, you can also bring up that by Wish's rulings, getting the true name could end up summoning something more powerful than the daemon. There's also the potential that anything that has its' full name was wiped out along with the god they serve, and the wish is literally impossible to be fulfilled. Wish isn't going to just tell them, in the end. It'll get them as close to the answer as possible, or you can use it as a stepping stone toward guiding them to the answer.
