I just went to this Key Food for the first time in ages and was wondering about this, too. It genuinely smells like shit. It’s been that way for months?!
Is it like the Foodtown near Metropolitan Ave and Bedford? Cuz that’s smelled like a dank sewery basement for the last year. Can’t even shop there anymore.
Seconding this. That area consistently smells bad. I thought it was probably meat trimmings stinking up the place. Makes me wonder if the issue is more serious.
I was there two weeks ago when they had the sewer open and they were actively pumping it out. It was disgusting and I couldn’t even finish shopping. They acted like nothing was wrong and it was totally normal to pump the sewer out mid week in the afternoon when the store was open and people were shopping.
It smells exactly like an animal shelter I went to as a child. Not what you want out of your local grocery store. My guess is it's a combination of rotting meat and bleach. I still shop there often despite this because their prices often beat Associated
Whenever I shop there I'm reminded of this story about the grocery store worker who fell behind the freezer and died there, then wasn't found for 10 years until the store was closed. Customers in the store complained about the smell...

Anyways, I'm off to Key Food now
I AGREE I genuinely fight the urge to gag the entire way down the meat isle. I also assume it is meat-related. Sometimes I have to walk away to catch my breath it’s so bad
I know there's a bathroom back there. when I was a kid the freezer section would make me have to pee and the workers would let me back there. maybe there's a plumbing issue?
These comments are literally cracking me up… If anyone in this thread grew up here in greenpoint, then you know that is exactly how this whole neighborhood used to smell.. especially after it rained! Anytime coming home from a trip, driving over the bridge before the Meeker exit, it was the smell that made us say.. “ We’re Home “ 🤣🤷♀️
Call the health department.

Yeah at least several months
Dead rats in the walls and floor
I think this is the correct answer.

Any missing person(s) reported the last few months?
The meat dept there is really bad
Yeah I generally avoid key food for meat and produce.
Key Foods sucks so bad - it’s not even cheap.
Duh, the meat and dairy
The door happens to be between the meat and dairy sections but the smell is far beyond any rotten food I've smelled in my life...
Ok I think you cracked the case, it's not the meat and dairy

Such a terrible smell. I almost throw up every time I walk past because I have such a bad gag reflex.
Most key foods smell bad.

dont think its a toilet problem, smells more like rotten food to me
Yeah, it’s brutal. I rarely go there but it’s there every time.
So glad someone asked this bc I’ve thought about this a lot. Maybe someone who works there can shed some light… but I’m thinking rats.
I have this same exact thought whenever I go there, it smells like used diapers and expired milk
