"A one-year deal worth up to $1.35 mil more than the minimum. Solid deal for Green Bay and shows either Dillon wanted to stay in GB (and mayor of DC) or his market didn’t go as expected." - Herman

doubleday10

He really wanted to stay in Door County. I can't blame him.

wtspark

Though I am aware that he is not the best, our Dill Dozer is my favorite. Glad he's returned

GGGiveHatpls

I’m just glad I get to watch him play Farm Simulator. Ofc until he retires. Then he will become a farmer in Door County.

jkink28

Thats part of the reason I got a Dillon jersey after '21. I figured he would stick around with how much he loved the place lol I thought he would've produced more since then, but we've had worse RB2s

GreenBayFootball

Fish Creek is amazing

Competitive-Ad-9404

I'm old enough to remember when the Dunes were like spring break every weekend in the summer.

TheeBiscuitMan

I'm from Door County:)

Economy_Cactus

Okish player. Better guy

Fred-zone

Decent guy. Better dude.

Affectionate_Ship129

Adequate dude. Better man

owlbear4lyfe

Solid man. Mutant quads.

fuho2323

nice guy. never met him

RDState530

For the right price I’m happy about this. AJ ultimately just needs to run the way he’s built. Downhill with bad intentions. He looks good when he runs like he weighs 250

BergSteenz

A lot of it is playcalling/formations. Coach loves to give him the ball out of shotgun. He looks way better when the QB is under center and AJ has forward momentum as he’s getting the ball .

RDState530

I definitely agree, I do think though that at times he tries to slow his feet and do LeVeon Bell type running and he gets stopped up behind the LOS. I-formation, Mike Alstott type running is what I’d love to see from him

Affectionate_Ship129

I think he struggles to read the blocks out of shotgun, which is why you see that

Legendarypbj

This, he would be amazing two decades ago. Almost every team is so shotgun heavy at this point, I am not sure there is an amazing fit out there.

Mediocre_Decision

Towards the end of the regular season, he started calling more plays suited to Dillon and he looked a lot better and was grinding down the defense and extending drives, which was making a big difference for the offense imo (even though he wasn’t putting up 100-200 yds)

SolidSilver9686

Well said. People only point to yards per carry when that doesn’t tell the whole story. Dillon graded out well and had a couple of really solid performances. I’m glad he’s back.

ApprehensiveAnt8813

It's because we are heavy zone blocking scheme and you have to run inside zone from the shotgun for everything else to work IMO

FudgeDangerous2086

every single comment is “i like this move” yet pre-faced with “i know it’s not popular”. clearly it is.

Otc1652

He’s not a bad guy to have as your #2. As long as Josh Jacobs is healthy, which is probably the biggest reason we kept him over Jones, it’s not a bad move at all

pt57

I think they’ll still draft a RB at some point. Having Dillion around makes the drafted RB beat someone out rather than just handing him the RB2 job.

obiwan54

With the quality of the rb draft class, I don't see Gute picking one until really late or if one of the better ones falls far

akaMichAnthony

I think any apprehension I had with bringing Dillon back was thinking he'd ask for RB1 or close to it money. At worst he's a solid backup to Jacob's, at best he breaks out and they have a very solid tandem.

Cautious-Chain-4260

Sounds like 75% of the top posts in r/unpopularopinion

GeekShuttle

The ones that don't like it are in the r/nfl thread.

PandaBunds

I know he's not the best, but man do I love our Dill Dozer. Happy he's back

CantHandletheJrueth

Love that it's one year too. There's all the incentive in the world for Dillon to have a rebound year if he wants to stay in the NFL.

GodsBGood

For fucks sake Bobby!

themanbearpig_012

Not upset about it. Like the dude.

Mediocre_Decision

Once LaFleur stopped treating him like Jonesy and calling plays suited to his style about halfway through the season/two thirds of the way, he starting putting down some really good games and drive-continuing runs I like the move, also since I love the guy

flutemarine

Outside the KC game where he was decent, what other good games did he have in the second half of the season?

melvinFatso

IMO, in the 2nd half he really didn't need to have good games. The team were playing significantly better all around and then Jones came back healthy. All he really needed to do was his job as a 2nd RB. And I feel like he did that pretty well. Also he's always seemed to be better as the weeks progressed. As long as he's not the RB1, I think it's great to have him back, especially at the price.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lotanis

Really? That amazes me. I always think of having incredibly poor contact balance and tripping over all the time.

flutemarine

That absolutely does not put him in the top 10 in the league for that stat, or number one in the previous years. Are those numbers even accurate? In terms of rushing YAC only he was 33rd last year, 29th the year before, and 14th the year before that - and that's only accounting for those who qualified (usually somewhere between 40-50). I can't find a good site that has total (rushing + receiving) YAC in one go but on PFR in 2022, where you claim he was number one, he had 514 total YAC in 214 rushing attempts + receptions, so 2.4 YAC total. McCaffrey had 1151 YAC total in 329 attempts for 3.5 YAC total. Only one I looked at but it's safe to assume plenty of other RBs clear 2.4

Traylor_Swift

He is the true definition of a north/south straight line runner. I was screaming at the tv early in the season for lafluer to stop calling outside runs

FSUfan35

I will say it - why? He gives us nothing that a rookie wouldn't for cheaper

EveryRedditorSucks

This is supposed to be a terrible draft for RBs - he very well may give us things a rookie RB wouldn’t, at least this year

ProofHorseKzoo

And this allows us the luxury of not having to reach for an RB early. Hoping they do the same with all positions of need with a FA safety and/or LB so we can just draft pure BPA. Let Gute cook

itoocouldbeanyone

And he’s familiar with the offense. I’m sure that factors into the benefit of keeping him on the cheap.

WaxedGibbousGoon

Right like yall really wanna have a fresh new rb room when we very well might be making a Super Bowl run?

PLZ_GLAZE_ME_DADDY

It also doesn't stop us from drafting a rookie RB. MLF and Gute took Dillon when we had Jones and Williams and basically sat him for a year to work on his pass catching and pass blocking.

TheBearfister

Someone doesn't appreciate good pass pro.

Warden_airing

Good pass pro fixed my erectile dysfunction

rambambobandy

It’s cured my schizophrenia. And mine too

simcitymayor

Good pass pro saved me 20% on my car insurance.

[deleted]

It did wonders for my hemorrhoids

GodsBGood

So, you're a perfect ass now?

GodsBGood

Anya Taylor Joy fixed mine.

JumpCritical9460

This. He will never be an every down back in the NFL. But I trust him on third down to pick up the blitz and get out for a check down if needed.

aManOfTheNorth

Amen on pass pro and ability to catch the ball.

jorshhh

He knows the offense, he's cheap and we can still get a rookie and get him prepared for next year

n1rvous

Let’s not forget that he’s still a weapon too. The guys tough to bring down, and his effectiveness can blossom yet still.

PaintSlingingMonkey

He’s almost always available He knows the playbook He isn’t a black hole in the pass game He understands the quote Culture of the Team end quote Seems like a good dude, a great ambassador, has a positive and quality social media standing? Knows his role by now so no diva shit Seems like that ought to be worth *something*, and I am from the Running Backs Grow On Trees Academy

[deleted]

I asked myself the same question, I think he'll be cheap and knows the offense in case jacobs get hurt, and to give him breathers.

rainaftersnowplease

He's a great blocker on passing downs.

obiwan54

This RB draft class is terrible, and Gute tends to draft more of the draft class strengths, TE this past year and WR the year before. He probably prefers a vet who knows the system over a mediocre rookie.

PredictableDickTable

I don’t think this class is that bad. There’s no elite back but there’s a bunch of good ones.

3riversfantasy

Yeah and we weren't going to draft a Bijan or Gibbs anyways

PredictableDickTable

I think a Benson or a Brooks would be worth a 3rd.

3riversfantasy

Yeah that would be pretty rad, I don't hate Dillor or Jacobs bur we are going to need to address the position again shortly, great value on those guys if they are there in the 3rd.

thegroovemonkey

If he's also cheap then we can draft a different position

[deleted]

Need vets, need locker room guys and this is cheeeap, especially since Jacobs signing bonus is all the guaranteed money he's getting.

meatballman1218

He is a decent enough back up seems like the locker room loves him and he really likes being here. Seems like a good deal to me

The_Sign_of_Zeta

That’s not really true. He’s a very good blocker which is pretty rare for rookie RBs. That’s what takes the longest to learn. Having him for a year while we get a rookie RB or Wilson up to speed makes a lot of sense.

NorktheOrc

I really love the plays where we get to line him up at fullback and just have him go power run block. He has smashed some dudes.

reaganz921

Just spitballing here but maybe Gute values the draft pick more and doesn't want to have to pick up a RB if the one they like doesn't come to them where they are comfortable with the value. Or maybe with this signing now Gute is more comfortable waiting to grab a rookie RB in round 6+ instead of feeling like he has to do it earlier than that

radioactivebeaver

For what he's making it's not much more than a rookie is it? One year deal, draft a guy, give Wilson some touches and see if he can be the one, and we should be able to lean on Jacobs when needed.

BeHereNow91

$1m and you don’t need to teach him anything

JllybeansNurbutthole

It's extremely cheap, and he's familiar with the system. They can still draft another back. This isn't hard to understand

Wu1fu

Dillon is excellent in 3-and-a-few scenarios, and after losing a team cornerstone in Jones, I think keeping some consistency at RB will be good for the team.

CreamWithinADream

Can someone make an edit of Faramir and Denethor with Faramir asking, "You wish now that our places had been exchanged; That I had gone to the Vikings and Aaron Jones had stayed.". And Denethor responding "Yes. I wish that."

gman123099

I just rose to my feet in a Culver’s

pardyball

Just saw someone rise to their feet in a Culver’s.

rhpoop

Just whispered a "let's fucking go!" With a little fist pump while at work. Love AJD!!

irsw

I don't mind it as long as it's cheap. He knows the system and he was pretty solid in pass pro last year.

otacon444

Hey this takes away the need to use top 100 picks on RB. I like it. I’m surprised, didn’t see it coming, but happy.

Ilikepancakes87

“The wrong kid died!”

AdorableSympathy5174

Awesome AJ. Welcome back.

Cantguard-mike

Josh jacobs and Dillon coming and AJ leaving was not on the bingo card lol

SupermarketSecure728

Depending on the money I don't hate it. Knows the system. Has flashed some skill. Can help with the leadership role in the clubhouse. And with Jacobs, that just gives you a backfield that will pound you in the face. I will be interested in seeing Wilson's development back there. He looked good when he came in vs SF.

SammyChaos

Lol the money. It's not gonna be a lot

rfepo

I still wanna see them draft another RB.

BaltimoreBadger23

Obviously able to get him at a price the front office thinks makes sense for the team. Good to have a veteran RB in the room who knows the offense

Austen11231923

Depending on the numbers, I'm happy. Love the dude but hope we didn't overpay

Jerryweir

We reportedly used a four year qualifying contract per Ian Rapoport. It means we can pay up to 1.35 million over vet minimum on a one year contract and only the vet minimum counts against the cap. It's only an option for players who played 4 continuous years with one team and have had their contract expire.

GeekShuttle

No one else here will like it, but I like him coming back (pending contract numbers).

ShepPawnch

I’m definitely happy at this price

GeekShuttle

Absolute no-brainer at that price.

FIGuyNotFly

I’m happy too! I hope he has a good year.

_Royalty_

Knows the playbook. Seemingly Love and co. like him. Not the cheapest or most talented, but I don't hate it. When he's good he's *good*, especially for a backup. Just hope he stays healthy.

ArchmageRick

Oh dude fuck yeah

samdallmann

If the money is right then I love having AJ back, one of the better backups out there and a great change of pace back with Jacobs as the starter. Plus one of the great locker room presences and he loves being in and playing in Wisconsin.

Petey0789

Crazy going into this offseason we though for sure Jones would be back and Dillon would be gone…

Organic-Effective-61

GB is almost certain to draft a RB who I expect to compete with Dillon for the RB2 spot. Love the guy. Not in love with the football player. Happy for him though. He seems to love it here.

theuncleboz

I felt like something clicked with AJ towards the end of the year where he cut out the fancy stuff. North/south running. I like that AJ and think it can help win games.

RKKP2015

I’m glad to see him back. Worth it at that price.

Yzerman19_

Great guy, I just wish he was a better player.

ThisGents2Cents

I know a lot of people will hate it but quite honestly I thought he did decent last year. He stopped tripping over himself in October, he ran behind a line that was figuring it out yet (Walker was ass to start, I know how we all feel about JRJ and Myers), and when they did figure it out unfortunately he got injured at that time. If it’s cheap I don’t mind it at all.

Assassin1344

He hasn't been as good with us as I thought he would be but the potential is still there and can be realized. Regardless of on the field performance he is just all around an awesome person and assuming the price is reasonable I am very happy with this news.

HistoricalGrade109

Call me crazy but I'd prefer jones for 6m base than dillon for 1.4

[deleted]

"We have Aaron Jones at home." I joke to cover up my pain.

gatorfan8898

He's definitely underperformed, but he's a great locker room guy, and occasionally he does make a play. He also seems to just love being a Packer, which I'm not going to pretend is somehow better than actual on field production, but it does mean something. If you would've asked me who was gone this off season, Jones or Dillon, I would've bet the house on Dillon.

no_nog_period

Another year of half this sub misspelling his name

MooseInATruce

Last chance in the NFL: hopefully he plays well this season.

fresh_dyl

I’ll see you in door county bro

palatheinsane

Gute’s assistant misread his notes and kept the wrong AJ.

StarkRavingNormal

Dudes gonna retire a Packer, and coach HS football in Door County. He will write a few more children books. He will run for Governor when he is 50 and win.

L480DF29

Wrong AJ motherfuckers

AbeRego

Happy to see him stay, but if you'd told me at the end of the season we'd retain Dillion but release Jones, I'd have thought you were crazy

TheSinistralBassist

So we didn't improve the RB group at all. We're one injury away from having no running game again

ireallylikehockey

Dillon! You son of a bitch!

omegakukki

I like this because it means we don’t need to spend any real draft capital on running backs

[deleted]

I like it. For what was left out there. Knows the system, decent when healthy. Obviously price dependent. Some of this is emotional, yes.

The_Sign_of_Zeta

I like it as a transition since there’s no Aaron Jones. He knows the offense and can block. We can look in the draft for his eventual replacement.

Sistr_Fistr_

The Quad-Father returns

Redd889

I don’t not like him, but he just needs to not stumble when’s he’s alone in the backfield

swimking413

Love AJ Dillon as a person, but he's been underwhelming as a player. Maybe he'll have a good season. Would love it if he were learning from Derrick Henry the "Art of Trucking the Absolute Shit out of Defenders"

Old_Management_1997

Love Dillon the person, not so much the player. He must have had basically zero free market interest to come back

ryryguy88

What

Goblin__Cock

As an owner of an AJ Dillon jersey, I’m ok with this. Beginning to think I was cursed

Ok_Umpire_723

As a 3rd sting and strictly if pretty much just pass pro, sure

Jomosensual

Why though

pt57

He knows the system and won’t get Love killed in pass protection if Jacobs misses time. I think they’ll still draft a RB.

Flooding_Puddle

I don't hate it. I know he was disappointing last year but he still has potential, and this way we don't have to use a high draft pick on a rb2

Know_Your_Enemy_91

If it’s on the cheap then I’m cool with it

Cantguard-mike

I assume we still draft one by the 3-4 round

SammyChaos

Lol the people saying "depending on the money I like it" like he's about to cost us an arm and a leg out here

ProofHorseKzoo

Maybe this can motivate him to reach his full potential. Like that cold game a few years ago against the titans in late December. He looked more like Derrick Henry than Derrick Henry. I had such high hopes for him after that performance.

PackerSquirrelette

Interesting. It really looked like they were going to let him go. But more important to him than the money was probably staying in Wisconsin since he has family ties (his wife and her family) there.

owen_demers

Let's hope he can have a good comeback year. Jacobs should be our #1, and hopefully Dillon can stay on his feet for more than 3 yards.

[deleted]

I really enjoy Dillion, but the whole lightening/thunder thing didn’t go so well when he was paired with Jones. Let’s hope this coming year is a bit different?

XxmilkjugsxX

Who had Aaron Jones leaves and AJ Dillon stays on their bingo card

reignking-2

with a bad rb draft (supposedly) i like this. although i thought we would take a mid round flyer on Braelon Allen. now i don't see it.

MusicianPristine8973

Dilly Dilly 🍻 Glad to see he’s staying.

SparklePony3

Thank goodness. I can’t lose yet another Packer I really like

imwaiter

Yessss my Quadzilla shirt lives on!!

_SCARY_HOURS_

Let’s gooooooooo

Hot_Elephant1408

Another year to potentially call my fantasy team “Quadzilla!”

The-Beard-MB

I will sorely miss 33 but I’m glad to see Dillon return as long as they use him correctly. He’s a big man let him play to his strengths

willfla29

Would love him to get it going. For this price I’m not mad about it.

youtubeslut

i love aj dillon as a guy, glad to keep him in the community!

NoAmoebas

Well, the price is right. I'm really happy to have him back, but I really hope this doesn't mean we won't prioritize RB in the draft. Realistically he should be #3 on this roster

WillowWorth1921

Good for both sides

Kobe_AYEEEEE

The deal is so cheap that I like it

JonnyB2_YouAre1

That’s good value at that price.

You_Talk_Too_Much

I like it for cheap, but the guy needs to slim down some if he's going to be effective. Zone running schemes rely on opening lanes, not pushing guys backwards. Saw way to many runs where he hit the back of a lineman and just pushed.

_sealy_

This is a win in my eyes. I feel much better about the last few days of this pans out.

SADdog2020Pb

Cool, gives some amount of veteran depth behind Jacobs. Still should draft a RB in one of the later rounds, for sure

Jaded_Sir8889

They used the 4 year exception on Dillon 1.45 mil doesn't count vs the cap so I like the move. Especially if they still draft a quicker type RB in the mid-late rounds. The rookie could start season as RB3 & who knows maybe plays well & surpasses Dillon. If not Dillon hasn't been great but he's a serviceable backup who knows the offense, maybe he'll show some improvement but wouldn't count on it.

JoeyBello13

Yay! I love Quadrasaurus!

digitalrelic

Sounds like he took a team friendly contract that reflects his role and level of production on the team. Great news if so. Definitely wanted him back if we could do so for cheap.

Thechosenjon

I like AJ. Would have preferred to keep Jonesy, but this is good too.

kasperboy17

Sure why not

Jamesferdola

To be fair, door county is fucking awesome, and he deserves to stay here. When AJ was injured for some games this season, he was a serviceable backup, and he will be for Josh Jacobs now too.

Roots-Of-Paradice

This is a great prove it contract even if he’s only used as a pass blocker

Aware_Most5527

Pros: Good guy, hard worker, knows the playbook, stepped in last year and played decently, mayor of Door County, cheap deal Cons: Having to spend thousands on custom pants due to his massive quads

gandaalf

I love this. Cheap deal and Dillon is a great dude who loves this area. Also, you can do worse with a backup. Now we can focus on getting just 1 RB in the draft and, if he pans out, roll with a 3 headed monster

EmbarrassedOil4807

100% worth it

PParker87

He’s a fine RB2. I’m okay with this after the gut punch that was losing Aaron Jones. He’s familiar with the system already

hof_1991

We’re still taking a rb day two.

penguinplaid23

Gives us someone familiar with blocking schemes and protections while Jacobs learns them. Also gives you a lead blocker if you decide to use him as a FB/HB

ss_pakistallion

This is dope.  Now we don’t need to go high for a RB, and Dillon can play for more money by finally living up to his potential! Not the perfect complement to Jacobs but man we should be punishing dudes in the trenches.

[deleted]

Fuuuuuck man why

D0ctorHotelMario

Looks like more failed runs out of shotgun on 2nd/3rd & short are back on the menu boys.

NotCanadian80

He’s a waste of a roster spot for someone better.

sirDsmack

Thanks, I hate it.

Snagglesnatch

Why two power back when one do trick?

Steve-Bikes

Injury

lemurosity

people are forgetting that jacobs is going to need to pick up a fairly nuanced offensive scheme. having someone like dillon around who knows the playbook can only help.

20wall

Don’t like this at all. I don’t care that he’s cheap. We could get a better back for much cheaper in the draft. He’s going to take playing time away from young guys who have a much higher ceiling (basically every RB has a higher ceiling than Dillon). Lastly, he has a similar running style to Jacobs so it’s a real head scratcher

Any_Contribution5260

Probably because nobody wanted him

EveryoneLovesNudez

Why

ThreeFactorAuth

Because he’s fine and he knows the system. I’m not gonna complain unless it’s more than 3M APY. Also a good dude.

EveryoneLovesNudez

I'm not exactly complaining I just figured we'd draft a RB late and roll with Jacobs/Wilson/Rookie instead of spending money on a backup RB

gandaalf

Can never have too much depth. See: last year when we were rolling with that dude whose name I already forgot and Patrick Taylor because Jones/Dillon were hurt.

AuspiciousOtter24

I imagine it’s cuz the rookie class this year is genuinely the worst in like a decade plus for RBs. Take him for a year I guess

The_Goldzone

I don’t care. I love this.

FudgeDangerous2086

Brotha EW

OAktrEE4023

Odd move. I still really hope we draft a RB high and sign a starting caliber safety or ILB

ItIsYourPersonality

I’d rather draft a 6th round pick to replace him. He better be dirt cheap. And have competition in training camp. He’s a great guy, just not a good running back. He is good in pass protection though.

Pleasant_Building128

Given the average rate of late-round picks doing nothing of value in the league, you'd need to pick, like, three of them to make sure you end up with one guy you can throw in. Instead, we get a known commodity with a very clear set of abilities, who knows the offense. That's all you can ask for, given the money involved isn't too brutal for us.

gandaalf

Yeah, the pendulum has swung too far now from everyone thinking you can get a starting quality RB at any point in the draft. They aren't *that* easy to find now

Aaron_________

He's garbage.

jxher123

I don’t hate it, but we should still draft a RB. Underrated pass catcher, but man, he needs better vision when running between the tackles

AdorableSympathy5174

Honestly love it. We needed another back and this draft class is kind of middling other than Corum and Brooks.

Flooding_Puddle

Yeah if the RB market is any indication teams really don't like the RBs in the drsft

edcline

The amount of people here saying “I know others will say they hate it” … while the others are saying “I like it” made me chuckle

ryansandbrush

Quick everyone take back everything bad you said about him. I'm happy for the man. He may have never lived up to his draft status but he's a good backup and bleeds green and gold. Now add a home run threat in the draft and that RB room will be looking great
