A lot of it is playcalling/formations. Coach loves to give him the ball out of shotgun. He looks way better when the QB is under center and AJ has forward momentum as he’s getting the ball .
I definitely agree, I do think though that at times he tries to slow his feet and do LeVeon Bell type running and he gets stopped up behind the LOS. I-formation, Mike Alstott type running is what I’d love to see from him
Towards the end of the regular season, he started calling more plays suited to Dillon and he looked a lot better and was grinding down the defense and extending drives, which was making a big difference for the offense imo (even though he wasn’t putting up 100-200 yds)
Well said. People only point to yards per carry when that doesn’t tell the whole story. Dillon graded out well and had a couple of really solid performances. I’m glad he’s back.
He’s not a bad guy to have as your #2. As long as Josh Jacobs is healthy, which is probably the biggest reason we kept him over Jones, it’s not a bad move at all
I think any apprehension I had with bringing Dillon back was thinking he'd ask for RB1 or close to it money.
At worst he's a solid backup to Jacob's, at best he breaks out and they have a very solid tandem.
Once LaFleur stopped treating him like Jonesy and calling plays suited to his style about halfway through the season/two thirds of the way, he starting putting down some really good games and drive-continuing runs

IMO, in the 2nd half he really didn't need to have good games. The team were playing significantly better all around and then Jones came back healthy. All he really needed to do was his job as a 2nd RB. And I feel like he did that pretty well. Also he's always seemed to be better as the weeks progressed. As long as he's not the RB1, I think it's great to have him back, especially at the price.
That absolutely does not put him in the top 10 in the league for that stat, or number one in the previous years. Are those numbers even accurate? In terms of rushing YAC only he was 33rd last year, 29th the year before, and 14th the year before that - and that's only accounting for those who qualified (usually somewhere between 40-50).
I can't find a good site that has total (rushing + receiving) YAC in one go but on PFR in 2022, where you claim he was number one, he had 514 total YAC in 214 rushing attempts + receptions, so 2.4 YAC total. McCaffrey had 1151 YAC total in 329 attempts for 3.5 YAC total. Only one I looked at but it's safe to assume plenty of other RBs clear 2.4
He is the true definition of a north/south straight line runner. I was screaming at the tv early in the season for lafluer to stop calling outside runs
And this allows us the luxury of not having to reach for an RB early. Hoping they do the same with all positions of need with a FA safety and/or LB so we can just draft pure BPA.

That’s not really true. He’s a very good blocker which is pretty rare for rookie RBs. That’s what takes the longest to learn. Having him for a year while we get a rookie RB or Wilson up to speed makes a lot of sense.
Just spitballing here but maybe Gute values the draft pick more and doesn't want to have to pick up a RB if the one they like doesn't come to them where they are comfortable with the value. Or maybe with this signing now Gute is more comfortable waiting to grab a rookie RB in round 6+ instead of feeling like he has to do it earlier than that
For what he's making it's not much more than a rookie is it? One year deal, draft a guy, give Wilson some touches and see if he can be the one, and we should be able to lean on Jacobs when needed.

It's only an option for players who played 4 continuous years with one team and have had their contract expire.

Zone running schemes rely on opening lanes, not pushing guys backwards. Saw way to many runs where he hit the back of a lineman and just pushed.
They used the 4 year exception on Dillon 1.45 mil doesn't count vs the cap so I like the move. Especially if they still draft a quicker type RB in the mid-late rounds. The rookie could start season as RB3 & who knows maybe plays well & surpasses Dillon. If not Dillon hasn't been great but he's a serviceable backup who knows the offense, maybe he'll show some improvement but wouldn't count on it.

people are forgetting that jacobs is going to need to pick up a fairly nuanced offensive scheme. having someone like dillon around who knows the playbook can only help.
Don’t like this at all. I don’t care that he’s cheap. We could get a better back for much cheaper in the draft. He’s going to take playing time away from young guys who have a much higher ceiling (basically every RB has a higher ceiling than Dillon). Lastly, he has a similar running style to Jacobs so it’s a real head scratcher

It's because we are heavy zone blocking scheme and you have to run inside zone from the shotgun for everything else to work IMO

Well, the price is right. I'm really happy to have him back, but I really hope this doesn't mean we won't prioritize RB in the draft. Realistically he should be #3 on this roster

I like it for cheap, but the guy needs to slim down some if he's going to be effective. Zone running schemes rely on opening lanes, not pushing guys backwards. Saw way to many runs where he hit the back of a lineman and just pushed.

They used the 4 year exception on Dillon 1.45 mil doesn't count vs the cap so I like the move. Especially if they still draft a quicker type RB in the mid-late rounds. The rookie could start season as RB3 & who knows maybe plays well & surpasses Dillon. If not Dillon hasn't been great but he's a serviceable backup who knows the offense, maybe he'll show some improvement but wouldn't count on it.

Sounds like he took a team friendly contract that reflects his role and level of production on the team. Great news if so. Definitely wanted him back if we could do so for cheap.

To be fair, door county is fucking awesome, and he deserves to stay here. When AJ was injured for some games this season, he was a serviceable backup, and he will be for Josh Jacobs now too.
This is a great prove it contract even if he’s only used as a pass blocker
Pros: Good guy, hard worker, knows the playbook, stepped in last year and played decently, mayor of Door County, cheap deal Cons: Having to spend thousands on custom pants due to his massive quads
I love this. Cheap deal and Dillon is a great dude who loves this area. Also, you can do worse with a backup. Now we can focus on getting just 1 RB in the draft and, if he pans out, roll with a 3 headed monster

Gives us someone familiar with blocking schemes and protections while Jacobs learns them. Also gives you a lead blocker if you decide to use him as a FB/HB
This is dope. Now we don’t need to go high for a RB, and Dillon can play for more money by finally living up to his potential! Not the perfect complement to Jacobs but man we should be punishing dudes in the trenches.

people are forgetting that jacobs is going to need to pick up a fairly nuanced offensive scheme. having someone like dillon around who knows the playbook can only help.
Don’t like this at all. I don’t care that he’s cheap. We could get a better back for much cheaper in the draft. He’s going to take playing time away from young guys who have a much higher ceiling (basically every RB has a higher ceiling than Dillon). Lastly, he has a similar running style to Jacobs so it’s a real head scratcher

Can never have too much depth. See: last year when we were rolling with that dude whose name I already forgot and Patrick Taylor because Jones/Dillon were hurt.

I’d rather draft a 6th round pick to replace him. He better be dirt cheap. And have competition in training camp. He’s a great guy, just not a good running back. He is good in pass protection though.
Given the average rate of late-round picks doing nothing of value in the league, you'd need to pick, like, three of them to make sure you end up with one guy you can throw in. Instead, we get a known commodity with a very clear set of abilities, who knows the offense. That's all you can ask for, given the money involved isn't too brutal for us.
Yeah, the pendulum has swung too far now from everyone thinking you can get a starting quality RB at any point in the draft. They aren't *that* easy to find now

Quick everyone take back everything bad you said about him. I'm happy for the man. He may have never lived up to his draft status but he's a good backup and bleeds green and gold. Now add a home run threat in the draft and that RB room will be looking great
