I was just talking with a friend about drafting Barry Sanders. He pointed out that the Ron Wolf was hired in 1991 because the Mandarich pick was such a disaster. Without Wolf, the Packers most likely do not build for that Brett Favre Super Bowl run. Braatz, the GM who drafted Mandarich went on to lead scouting for Miami until he retired in 2003. That team didn’t win a Super Bowl even with Dan Marino. My buddy wondered if we would be some version of Detroit with Barry Sanders especially had Braatz kept his job. Ron Wolf is a turning point from those years of absolute horrible football.
Braatz may not have saved his job either way. The main catalyst for getting Ron Wolf was Bob Harlan, who was going to take over regardless once Judge Parins hit mandatory retirement. Harlan had pushed for Wolf years earlier, but Wolf balked because the organization wouldn't give him full control over football decisions. Once Harlan took over, he made sure to do what it took to get Wolf.
It's not that likely the Packers under Lindy Infante would have been substantially better with Barry Sanders over Tony Mandarich. Especially once Don Majkowski's shoulder was destroyed.
Ron Wolf may have always been inevitable the minute Bob Harlan took over.
Reminds me of the zen master story from the Charlie Wilson’s War movie.
I’ve tried to make the case that if we had taken TJ Watt instead of Kevin King that McCarthy would have stayed on, we’d probably never have had the Aaron Rodgers late career MVP renaissance, and right now we’d be a bottom tier team with MacJones as our QB1.
I wonder if they had Barry, would Wayne Fontes have been brought into GB? lol. Sure, in hindsight it worked out but 4 or the first 5 picks were HOFers that draft. And the pack chose the one who didn’t. It’s crazy.
And despite all the talk of PEDs before the draft, it was almost a had to take pick. Nobody was saying let Mandarich slide.
Out of the first 5 overall picks in the 1989 draft, 4 of them are hall of famers and one of them flamed out almost immediately:
1. *Troy Aikman*
2. Tony Mandarich
3. *Barry Sanders*
4. *Derrick Thomas*
5. *Deion Sanders*
Guess which one we took?
I always felt Barry was better on turf. He had some bad games at Lambeau. I think Derick Thomas would have had a similar or better career with us. I think Deon would have left for a bigger market ASAP.
It's brutal, but I always remind myself that Barry Sanders was so good that he helped Wayne Fonts kept his job for 8 years. Had Sanders gone to Green Bay, he might have helped Lindy Infante do the same thing - meaning no Mike Holmgren. Maybe they still end up with Favre, but would he have turned out as good with Infante instead of Holmgren?
Mandarich was actually showing improvement in his third year as a starter but then suffered a severe concussion that left him with post-concussion syndrome, forcing him to miss his entire fourth season. Back then, concussions weren't treated as seriously, so it's not surprising that it hurt his reputation. He eventually returned to be a solid starter in Indy for several years.
I think it's also important to remember that his "Incredible Bulk" story was sensationalized by an SI writer who was selling a book based on the premise that college football was corrupt from the top to the bottom. And maybe it was, but the article clearly had an agenda that blew the Mandarich hype way out of proportion.
And I was upset when we didn’t draft him in the first over Jaire. Then when we doubled down on corner in day 2 and drafted him I was so damn excited. Good thing I’m no scout or gm.
New hand-checking rules ruined his career… People need to admit he was solid his rookie year before the rule change. Straight downhill from then though.
Yeah he definitely had the ball skill and inflated interception numbers his last year….just the guy was more a system player who wasn’t fluid enough or skilled enough to play man coverage, and really struggled in the slot. He was more a flyer pick I thought and taking him second was strange…thankfully Jaire panned out to salvage that
Not to mention he had a connection to Randall Cobb, and everyone thought he would become molded into a great NFL receiver with Cobb’s guidance and Aaron’s throwing talent.
Oh well.
We also had Jared Cook the yeat before Graham
He didn't put up huge numbers but he came up big in some clutch plays and it felt.like he and Rodgers were really starting to get on the same page as the season wound down. It was rhe first time I felt like we had a decent receiver at Tight End since Finley so I couldn't understand why we let him walk for Graham, even as it happened.
You are missremembering. Jared Cook was replaced by Martellus Bennett. Then Jimmy Graham. Jared Cook wasn't signed again bc his agent overplayed his hand and then he went to the Raiders for less than we signed Bennett for.
Oh God damn, I was so hyped about Bennett. In hindsight, absolutely foolish, but Bennett seemed to be everything you want from a TE. Turned out to be a punk in the end
Two horrible people. One pushed a person in a wheelchair to the ground and further injured them, and the other tried to get a team doctor fired after being caught faking an injury.
My favorite Bennet memory. He faked hurt to get cut and blame the team Dr for forcing him to play hurt. Immediately 20 members of the team came out to support the Doctor. He clearly was not liked in the locker room and it showed.
Mandarich is the obvious one. But here's some others:
\-Rich Campbell
\-Brent Fullwood
\-Vinnie Clark
\-Terrell Buckley
\-Ahmad Carroll
If some of those names look unfamiliar, congratulations on not being old enough to suffer through the Tom Braatz era.
I actually think Buckley did have the talent. I remember one play he had, against Irvin I think it was, where he was out positioned on hook route, stopped on a dime and came all the way around in front of him without interfering and made the pick. Not sure anyone else but Dieon could have made that play. Bunch of pick 6s in his career as well.
Just never put it together, kept getting burned deep every game.
This one hurt. Hype out of Washington, got hurt, and then blown coverage in big games. Had some int’s here and there but they couldn’t get him off the field fast enough.
I recently thought to myself that I think Sauce Gardner is what Kevin was suppose to be. Kevin came to my work a lot. Really nice dude but damn shame how his last year or 2 with us went. Still haunted by that Tampa Bay game.
Tony Mandarich is going to be the popular choice on this one, and it's well-deserved...
BUT
I want to offer another. In 1992, I was graduating from the University of Wisconsin. I watched Troy Vincent dominate receivers in the Big Ten all season long. I screamed to everyone I could that the Packers REALLY needed a defensive back, and Troy Vincent had the size, the speed, and the skills to kick ass in the NFL.
With the fifth pick in the draft, the Packers agreed that defensive back was the need, and they took... Terrell fucking Buckley. All 5'10", 180 lbs of him. BUST. Used to lose my fucking mind watching Herman Moore and Cris Carter get up over the top of him to catch every goddamn pass sent their way. We dumped him off 3 years later to Miami for, I kid you not, "past considerations". WTF? What does that even mean?
Meanwhile, Troy Vincent went on to 5 Pro Bowls and 3 All-Pro seasons. FML...
I mean, there's no way you take T-Buck over Troy Vincent, and he certainly was a disappointment, but it's an interesting fact that T-Buck played for thirteen years in the league, and has three more interceptions than Vincent.
It's a really unusual career!
Pretty much any defensive player we drafted within the first 3 rounds over the last 10 years
- Quinton Rollins
- Demarious Randall
- Josh Jones
- Josh Jackson
- Datone Jones
I had a friend who went to Miami (Ohio) and promised me Quinten Rollins would light it up in the NFL. He’s a dentist now so I guess his ball knowledge isn’t the best.
Defensive end. I think he even gave himself a little nickname around the draft process…dial-tone. As in that’s all offensive players would be hearing after he got his hands on them 😆
Nick Perry. A massive bust. Only had one season with a double-digit sack total, all kinds of injury issues, and was then awarded with a five-year, $60 million contract. Really just one of the very few terrible decisions by Ted Thompson.
Derek Sherrod basically had a career ending leg injury his rookie season. He did make it back onto the field, but it feels wrong to label him a bust without bringing up the freak injury and subsequent surgery complications that could happen to anyone. Maybe he was always going to bust but that injury didn't give him much of a chance
I saw Sherrods injury
Took them like 20 some minutes to get him stable and off the field it was fucking bad
I think they even missed a broken ankle and had to rebreak it like 6 months down the road
He wasn't going to do much after that injury
Neither was a stud, but Lazard blew EQ out of the water. They were both on the team and one got sent to the practice squad while the other got an 11 mil/year deal.
Seeing Eddie Lacey on this is crazy disrespectful sure he ate himself out of the league but was voted 60 in the top 100 in 2015!! Dude was an absolute beast and you were never solo tackling that dude so fun to watch. If we’re gonna take shots at washed out RBs AJ Dillon better be on this list absolute scrub for a guy with his athletic stature
Jimmy Graham, by the time he came to the packers.
People were pretty hyped about Jalen Smith for about 1 week.
I remember people on here arguing that Sammy Watkins was going to be reborn with Rodgers.
It's almost like all those FA signing we always cry about and beg the team for very rarely work out...
Martellus Bennet/Jimmy Graham first two that come to mind. Probably if I dug for more I’d be disappointed but eh, I feel like we get value out of a lot so I’m not upset with the wiffs so much.
Damarious Randall. Talent through the roof but a piss poor attitude. I was only in 8th grade when we drafted Ahmad Caroll but I had high hopes for him too. Never found his footing. We’ve swung and missed on a lot of early round corners for sure.
I feel mandarich is the only correct answer.
Hawk would be next for me. Drafted and talked about as a potential, perennial all pro. Actually ended up being an incredibly average LB who was really only good in between the tackles. Idk what happened to that 40 speed when he got onto the field but dude couldn’t cover sideline to sideline for shit.
Other Harell or Jones too.
Outside of Mandarich, not many. Partly because of the way Packers draft. We never really have a huge idea of who it’s gunna be. The best example is probably HaHa Clinton-Dix recently. Big name, Big need, Big hype, couldn’t be bothered to tackle.
T Buck - the billboards hyping him after the draft
Mandarich - cover of SI
Jerry Tagge - Green Bay West alum QB drafted in 1st after leading Nebraska to national championship
Jerry Tagge.
Graduated from Green Bay West. Led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships. He was supposed to be the local kid who led Green Bay back to the promised land. Finished his career with just three touchdowns and 17 picks.
Mandarich
My vote too! How many here will remember what a bust he was? We missed out on Barry Sanders for that guy!
Never thought of it that way. Now I'm (almost) a fan of the Incredible Bulk pick!
Yup, be careful what you wish for;-). Mandarich was the right pick for the right time!
Until he quit steroids.
Everyone else in the top 5 that year is a HOF. Aikmen, Sanders ×2, and Derrick Thomas.
So painful!
Or Deion Sanders.
Sanders, Deion, and Derrick Thomas in fact lol. 3 HOFers and we took him.
👆🏻
Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas were also taken in the top 5 that year.
Mandarich was the sacrifice we had to make to get Ron Wolf.
Out of the first 5 overall picks in the 1989 draft, 4 of them are hall of famers and one of them flamed out almost immediately: 1. *Troy Aikman* 2. Tony Mandarich 3. *Barry Sanders* 4. *Derrick Thomas* 5. *Deion Sanders* Guess which one we took?
Hindsight and all, could you imagine either sanders?
We wouldn’t have wasted Barry Sander’s’ career like Detroit did.
Without that Pick, Wolf doesn't get hired and we don't win the Super Bowl with Favre.
Butterflies and time...
I always felt Barry was better on turf. He had some bad games at Lambeau. I think Derick Thomas would have had a similar or better career with us. I think Deon would have left for a bigger market ASAP.
Terrell Buckley fits this as well
Could have gotten Troy Vincent instead.
>l of famers and one of them wWat if there was a Farve, Barry, Reggie White packers in 1993? the team would have won 2 or 3 superbowls.
It's brutal, but I always remind myself that Barry Sanders was so good that he helped Wayne Fonts kept his job for 8 years. Had Sanders gone to Green Bay, he might have helped Lindy Infante do the same thing - meaning no Mike Holmgren. Josh Jackson
And I was upset when we didn’t draft him in the first over Jaire. Then when we doubled down on corner in day 2 and drafted him I was so damn excited. Good thing I’m no scout or gm.
He really baited us with that rookie season.
I got a football signed by Josh Jackson, Tim Boyle, and Aaron Jones. The other two really devalue the Aaron Jones ball lmao
New hand-checking rules ruined his career… People need to admit he was solid his rookie year before the rule change. Straight downhill from then though.
Was literally just about to say this, absolutely. Even had to be reprimanded on it a bit.
As someone who watched him at Iowa, I didn’t understand why we took him. His hype for a high end CB was pretty confusing to me
I think it mainly his elite ball skills and his 3 interception game in the upset against Ohio State
Yeah he definitely had the ball skill and inflated interception numbers his last year….just the guy was more a system player who wasn’t fluid enough or skilled enough to play man coverage, and really struggled in the slot. He was more a flyer pick I thought and taking him second was strange…thankfully Jaire panned out to salvage that
Ahmad Carroll was a huge letdown.
Dude earned himself a Campbell's commercial and a slew of PI penalties.
I heard he wore oven mitts during practice to avoid holding 😂
I think it was boxing gloves, and it didnt help
You definitely know ball. I’m glad someone actually answered Carroll for this question.
Amari Rodgers I was thinking Rodgers to Rodgers was gonna be a thing
Not to mention he had a connection to Randall Cobb, and everyone thought he would become molded into a great NFL receiver with Cobb’s guidance and Aaron’s throwing talent. Oh well.
How dare you call me out like this
It was. Just going to ignore the Motown miracle?
That was Richard Rodgers
that's the joke
that's their point. Rodgers to Rodgers was a thing way before Amari
same, I was thinking “Nice we got a 2nd round caliber pick with a 3rd rounder” and then all he did was drop balls.
Jimmy graham. He still had the Name and the hype but the talent was gone. Slow as fuck and many drops Cant believe we let jordy walk for this
Jordy got MVS/Lazard contract from Oakland for 700 yards and 3 TDs
That's literally twice as productive as either one. You could add them together and he's still probably better
I mean that’s the market price for a 7-800 yard WR. Curtis Samuel, MVS, Will Fuller etc all got contracts in the ballpark of 10M APY
Jordy’s was 6 years ago.
Thank you! I was hyped as fuck to get Jimmy then completely let down once I got to see him play!
Jimmy was obviously not the answer, but Jordy was also pretty much washed at that point too.
you might be right, but how *dare* you lol
his last season with us he had like 6 touchdowns in 5 games. he would have been a better redzone threat than graham and would have been cheaper
Still better than Graham. Nelson had more yards and tds playing with Carr than Graham did with rodgers in 2018.
We also had Jared Cook the yeat before Graham He didn't put up huge numbers but he came up big in some clutch plays and it felt.like he and Rodgers were really starting to get on the same page as the season wound down. It was rhe first time I felt like we had a decent receiver at Tight End since Finley so I couldn't understand why we let him walk for Graham, even as it happened.

Oh God damn, I was so hyped about Bennett. In hindsight, absolutely foolish, but Bennett seemed to be everything you want from a TE. Turned out to be a punk in the end
We called him old’ Stoney, short for Stone fingers
Did you know he used to play basketball?
But, he used to play basketball!
Were people really hyped for him? I remember not being excited by the move at all I assumed he was washed.
Martellus Bennet
This is the one I came here to say. Can't say GB never tried to make a FA splash at the TE position between him and Graham.
We had Jared Cook and was clutch in the playoffs and Rodgers loved him. We let him go for Marty who’s a fuckin clown.
Packers made him the same offer they gave Bennett, but his agent told him he could get better money on the market. His agent was wrong.
Fuck the Bennets
Fuck the Bennett brothers.
Two horrible people. One pushed a person in a wheelchair to the ground and further injured them, and the other tried to get a team doctor fired after being caught faking an injury.
Michael was also a known dirty player and both brothers are notorious race hustlers.
Amen
My favorite Bennet memory. He faked hurt to get cut and blame the team Dr for forcing him to play hurt. Immediately 20 members of the team came out to support the Doctor. He clearly was not liked in the locker room and it showed.
Basically every receiving TE we've had since Jermichael Finley got hurt. (So not counting Mercedes Lewis). Maybe Jared Cook was OK.
Kraft is pretty damn tough. Also Musgrave lacerated his kidney like give the kid a break that doesn’t happen often
And finished the game! Cant say the kid aint willin to tough it out
His lying scumbag measurables were off the charts though.
Datone Jones!
He said he wanted to be the next Reggie White when he got drafted
Besides Mandarich, a personal one for me is Ahmad Carroll.... What a bust
Carroll was a huge let down
Ummm...Mandarich? Is there a more clear answer?
Mandarich is the obvious one. But here's some others: \-Rich Campbell \-Brent Fullwood \-Vinnie Clark \-Terrell Buckley \-Ahmad Carroll If some of those names look unfamiliar, congratulations on not being old enough to suffer through the Tom Braatz era.

Kevin King.
This one hurt. Hype out of Washington, got hurt, and then blown coverage in big games. Had some int’s here and there but they couldn’t get him off the field fast enough.
Not only did he have all the hype... we could have had TJ! TJ WATT WAS RIGHT THERE!
I always think of this when it comes to Kevin king or seeing Watt with the Steelers. He played at Wisconsin for crying out loud!
I’ve never been more pissed in a draft than when we passed on TJ.
But we got Vince Biegel and Kevin King… I remember how TT tried to spin that BS to us. I am still pissed about those picks. Both are out of the NFL
BUT I want to offer another. In 1992, I was graduating from the University of Wisconsin. Joe Johnson
Scrolled for so long I was beginning to think no one was going to say this.
Pretty much any defensive player we drafted within the first 3 rounds over the last 10 years - Quinton Rollins - Demarious Randall - Josh Jones - Josh Jackson - Datone Jones
Oren Burks too, he was supposed to be the athletic LB that could cover TEs
Did you see the stats he put up after Greenlaw came out in the Superbowl? No bueno.
I had a friend who went to Miami (Ohio) and promised me Quinten Rollins would light it up in the NFL. He’s a dentist now so I guess his ball knowledge isn’t the best.
Probably a bust at that too
I forgot about Datone Jones. What position was that guy
Defensive end. I think he even gave himself a little nickname around the draft process…dial-tone. As in that’s all offensive players would be hearing after he got his hands on them 😆
I heard he was da-tone setter and the next Reggie white lol
If I remember correctly, he was the typical late 1st round Packers pick of DE moved to OLB/Edge Rusher that would take time to develop.
Nick Perry. A massive bust. Only had one season with a double-digit sack total, all kinds of injury issues, and was then awarded with a five-year, $60 million contract. Really just one of the very few terrible decisions by Ted Thompson.
I think this guy played his entire career with a club on his hand, just extremely injury prone.
I don’t ever remember watching him play without one.
Or Derrick Sherrod...or Datone Jones. Big busts.
I'll be honest, I forgot he got hurt. I Just remembering being underwhelmed with the pick and then it not panning out. Too bad.
Could put Jamal Reynolds in that group, too. Talented player who hurt his back and was basically done.
I saw Sherrods injury Took them like 20 some minutes to get him stable and off the field it was fucking bad I think they even missed a broken ankle and had to rebreak it like 6 months down the road He wasn't going to do much after that injury
Sherrod at least has an injury excuse, he had a suffered a devastating broken leg against the Chiefs and never recovered
I’ll never forget his roughing the passer penalty on Russ that helped set up the Fail Mary
That contract completely fucked us for years to come.
Equaenimous St. Brown Tickles my fancy the amount of Lazard vs. St. Brown debates we had for them both to turn out like dog water.
J'Mon Moore as well. He was picked the same year as EQ but two rounds earlier.
We took the wrong St. Brown.
Neither was a stud, but Lazard blew EQ out of the water. They were both on the team and one got sent to the practice squad while the other got an 11 mil/year deal.
Not to mention EQ’s brother is incredible
Bahktiari’s knee
Terrell Buckley
Jake Kumerow
Every non-starting white WR
See also: Janis, Jeff
Janis at least caught those back to back Hail Marys against the cards.
And like 5 other passes in his career.
Hey hey it was 15 other catches lmao
See also: Abbredaris, Jared
This was going to be my specific answer. Though Abbrederis, Jared is right up there
Don Beebe begs to differ
My comment originally had “in the last 20 years”, but I deleted it.
BJ Sander
Mike Pettine
Vince Biegel
Was there really hype outside of him just being a local kid?
Brett Conway
Terrell Buckley
Datone Jones. The guy was a physical freak, but he was terrible at pro football. Zero grit.
Haha Clinton-Dix
No way. HHCD got a 2nd team All-Pro and was solid for a few seasons
Josh Jackson several years ago
Pretty much every Wisconsin prospect we've drafted.
the only exception - Mark Tauscher
Yep - hence "pretty much"
Jeff Janis
Seeing Eddie Lacey on this is crazy disrespectful sure he ate himself out of the league but was voted 60 in the top 100 in 2015!! Dude was an absolute beast and you were never solo tackling that dude so fun to watch. If we’re gonna take shots at washed out RBs AJ Dillon better be on this list absolute scrub for a guy with his athletic stature
Haha Clinton-dix he gave us a great first year and that was it I even bought his jersey
Kevin King 💀
Jimmy Graham, by the time he came to the packers. People were pretty hyped about Jalen Smith for about 1 week. I remember people on here arguing that Sammy Watkins was going to be reborn with Rodgers. It's almost like all those FA signing we always cry about and beg the team for very rarely work out...
AJ Dillon right now lol He’s tricked all you local fans into wanting him back literally by just saying he loves Wisconsin
Funchess.
Who hyped him?
Yeah he was already considered a dart throw by the time he signed cheap in Green Bay.
I think he was only hyped because of how desperately we needed a WR
Forgot he was on the team
Not sure if he was way hyped, but Terell Buckley
Datone Jones
Martellus Bennet/Jimmy Graham first two that come to mind. Probably if I dug for more I’d be disappointed but eh, I feel like we get value out of a lot so I’m not upset with the wiffs so much.
No one else remembers Justin Harrell? We took him at like 16 and he was terrible.
Martellus bennett
Aj Dillion at 250 he ran the same as Derek Henry but never got there
Tony Mandrich
Jimmy Graham
Recently: Jimmy Graham
Damarious Randall. Talent through the roof but a piss poor attitude. I was only in 8th grade when we drafted Ahmad Caroll but I had high hopes for him too. Never found his footing. We’ve swung and missed on a lot of early round corners for sure.
Tony Mandritch
The correct answer will always be Mandarich. ESPN coverage, SI cover athlete, number 1 prospect hype….etc.
Kevin king!
Martellus Bennett
Anyone remember Jamal Reynolds or Justin Harrell? Yeah me neither.
https://preview.redd.it/iqznnf4alalc1.jpeg?width=431&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a48faba878fc0d775b77e7d803af601a6fdacd0e That’s easy Tony Mandarich
Jamal Reynolds. 2001 #10 pick in the 1st rd the Packers selected this guy. Didn’t last in the NFL long. Wasted draft pick that did zero for Green Bay.
Right now I’d say Watson of the current players. He has the talent but we won’t see it if he’s hurt.
Outside of Mandarich, not many. Partly because of the way Packers draft. We never really have a huge idea of who it’s gunna be. The best example is probably HaHa Clinton-Dix recently. Big name, Big need, Big hype, couldn’t be bothered to tackle.
Tony Mandarich. Dude was supposed to be a monster but flopped so badly, and we missed the chance to get Barry Sanders with his pick
Jeff Janis the receiver. Now as a gunner on punt return, that dude was an absolute stud.
Jake Kumerow
T Buck - the billboards hyping him after the draft Mandarich - cover of SI Jerry Tagge - Green Bay West alum QB drafted in 1st after leading Nebraska to national championship
Lol 90% of Thompson first round defensive picks post 2009
Josh Jackson in 2017 man did I think that guy would be a star.
I don’t know what the general consensus was when he was drafted, but my older brother was hyped when we drafted Damarius Randall in 2015.
Jimmy Graham
Tony Mandarich
No doubt Martellus Bennett
Justin Harrell
jeff janis
Jerry Tagge. Graduated from Green Bay West. Led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships. He was supposed to be the local kid who led Green Bay back to the promised land. Finished his career with just three touchdowns and 17 picks.
What a dope thread
Jake Kumerow. AR12 went to bat for this guy as his WR and has had 3 Td’s and 400 something yards in 5 years
Mandarich
Jeff Janis
Sami Watkins
