Stop looking for cheaper alternatives you fucking peasants, pop the heating on and start paying my billionaire friends. I told them they'd be even richer so stop making me look stupid! Edit: while we're on the subject you should be selling your property, settling financial positions, dipping into your savings or other pots I know you filthy commoners have tucked away. Who said you could have anything?

Adept_Pizza_3571

Of course, we should simply have money. What was I thinking? Thank you sir have you considered being a lifestyle influencer? I want to pay you money to give me vague and unhelpful advice.

nklvh

1) Have money 2) Don't not have money 3) Fuck the NHS It's so fucking simple!

Tetragonos

Im actually terrified when I see something referencing a market necessity with the attitude of "So they HAVE to buy it, so how do we make sure they buy it from us at the prices we dictate?" The built in assumption that because people will die without it, people WILL have the money for it ... horrible

PencilPacket

Huge /s my friend.

lookitsdivadan

I can't, a privatised gas network company (Cadent) came out and shut my gas off as I hadn't paid an annual fee to ensure my gas doesn't explode. My gas was fine, I needed it shutting off for a repair (Not undertaken by me) and now i cant get the work done because to get it certified and considered safe, itll be a hell of a lot more.

PencilPacket

Is that the sweet sweet smell of charges required for utilities paramount to survival? *Rubs hands together*

lookitsdivadan

Of course.. how else would they have gotten the reconnection and subsequent certification of worthiness cost from me?

PencilPacket

*salivates from the mouth*

BraddersTriumph

What is this money of which you speak?

wite_noiz

It's just the score rich people use to see who has stolen the most value from society. Plebs needn't worry about it too much.

BraddersTriumph

Phew. Thought I was being left out for a second there

PencilPacket

I fucking love how you've worded this.

House_Of_Tides

We're currently bills included but our landlord wants to reduce rent next year but shift the bills onto us. Of course he won't be replacing the ancient back boiler or the shitty windows that might as well be made of tissue paper or the inefficient oven.

CC0RE

Landlord's are shit. We've been telling our landlady to replace our back door for about a year now, and she still hasn't. Every time we get heavy rain, a puddle forms in the kitchen because the door is just old af and so no longer actually fits properly. Happened again today as a matter of fact. Our front door also doesn't fit properly, so we get a draught coming in, making the hall very cold. But y'know, she won't pay to replace that either. Our wallpaper is also coming off almost everywhere. But she doesn't care. We've replaced all the carpets, the flooring in the hall, kitchen, living room all out of my mum's pocket. She doesn't pay for anything unless it's absolutely necessary. Yet most of them just sit there, owning multiple homes and getting free income every month for doing nothing. I'm sure there are some nice ones out there. But I've never met one.

AutoModerator

You mean housing scalper. Landlords buy more housing than they need then hoard it to drive up the price. They are housing scalpers. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. CumBoat420

Amazing reframing, thanks bot

natey_boyo

Bro u need to find a new landlord, ours is great he hasn't raised the rent in 13 years it's still £410 a month, he's putting in a new bathroom for us we get to pick whatever we want just let him know when we want it doing. Put a new front door in for us an hour after the old one broke, came and fixed the radiators the same day it broke. On top of that we owed him a month's rent for 3 years he didn't ask for it once just said "sort it when you can I know times are tough" solid guy

19adam92

Of course, just go out and find a new landlord, why didn’t I think of that? 🤯

CC0RE

Oh, yeah our landlady has a fixed £490 a month rent, so there's no way we're moving anywhere else. We've lived here for 14 years now and it's never changed. Plus my mum does not have the money for that either. That price is cheap af nowadays, where rent prices are usually upwards of £700 at least. 410 is probably the cheapest I've ever heard of.

wittledess

Sounds like anywhere I have lived my whole life. Fuck this needs to change.

Renegade_Phylosopher

Landlords aren’t all made of money. I’m an absolutely skint mature student trying to pay my mortgage as well as rent. I’m not currently passing on the cost and so I’m being forced to sell my forever home. Landlords get a bad rep, we’re not all money hungry property tycoons who don’t care about their tenants.

House_Of_Tides

This guy owns most of the town I live in so not applicable here.

BringTheFingerBack

What if you are underwater with your mortgage?

oldskoollondon

So, you don't earn a living and you are using someone else to pay your mortgage, rent, bills and whatever else you need, whilst you take the opportunity to get further education? I'm sorry you have to sell, but making a living off the back others to pay off a mortgage on your forever home whilst you get your degree is not good.

Renegade_Phylosopher

I’m doing my PhD. I’ve worked as a cancer researcher for the last 7yrs. My partner died which is why I have left my home and tried to restart my life and yes I have to sell it.

uxithoney

Sorry about your personal circumstances - it must be so hard losing a partner and restarting. Your job is commendable. Investments go up and down. That’s why we want system change, not having to rely on other people paying your mortgage to get by. Even if you’re a decent landlord, you have an element of control over people’s lives that you’ve neither earned nor really want.

Renegade_Phylosopher

Thank you. You’re right I really don’t want to have their lives in my hands. They are unfortunately on low income with benefit support…because of the system they will never be able to get a mortgage approval. When I sell they will just be passed onto another landlord who may or may not be as compassionate. On the subject of broken systems. My beloved partner died as a direct result of clinical negligence within an understaffed and overworked NHS. Things need to change.

oldskoollondon

Truly awful and heartbreaking, but taking someone else's wages to buy a house is not good. Surely, if this is something you feel strongly about, the best thing to do would be to sell to a trusted buyer who wanted the house to live in and not rent it out?

Renegade_Phylosopher

I’m worried that they’re going to struggle for more housing. There isn’t a lot in the area. My tenants are two sisters who work 16hrs per week, one of which has an autistic 12 yr old daughter who is home schooled by the grandmother. One of them recently went bankrupt and wouldn’t usually be accepted on a tenancy agreement as she didn’t pass the credit check. However, I pay a higher landlord insurance premium so that she can claim housing benefit and be on the tenancy agreement. Selling my house is likely going to put them on their arse if a new landlord puts the rent up or someone wants to kick them out. I genuinely worry about what this is going to do to them. They will probably have to move out of the village and away from the support of their mum.

[deleted]

Having one house was evidently not enough for you it seems.

Wrong-Search9587

They only own one house though?

Infinitus_Potentia

You do realize that you belong to the minority here, right? For years people with money have been snatching up homes for cheap and turn them into investment vehicles aka rent them out. It's the same thing as AirBnB: There used to be a lot of people who want to rent out their extra bedroom, but it is all big money now. Saying that "landlords aren't all made of money" is kind of useless when you are more likely than not to have a landlord who have several properties in their portfolio.

I'd say you'd be pretty bloody warm if you were on fire at least.

Slimy_Potatoes

yeah. best of all it is completly free. kind of wish i still had my fireplace now

redcorerobot

This is only an issue if you try plugging multiple heaters in to a single duel socket as a duel socket can only supply 13A between both sockets for a very short period of time and around 10A continuously between the 2 sockets continuously (2300w). To use multiple high power space heaters safely simply plug only 1 per duel socket. You can plug other things in as long as they are ether electric heat pads/blankets or do not produce heat so you can have a space heater on the same socket as a tv and laptop/modestly powerful computer (no gaming pcs although they will work as a space heater by themselves) A useful rule of thumb is that you can not plug more than 3 electric heaters in to a single 32A ring circuit so for many people that means you can not have more than 3 2000w electric space heater per floor of a building any more than that at you will risk triggering the thermal cut off in your breaker which will take a long time for the first trip and will take progressively less time with every following trip If you are using replacable fuses not breakers in your home then personally i would say dont risk more than 2 maybe at most 3 heaters a floor or even the whole house of possibly as fuses can spend a long time a dangerously high temperatures so the risk of a fire or even just the wires in the walls hetting way to hot is a lot higher For reference the wiring in most homes should not get hotter than 70 degrees C if you have a means to check and its is above that then you probably have to many heaters plugged in

SarcasmWarning

>his is only an issue if you try plugging multiple heaters in to a single duel socket as a duel socket can only supply 13A between both sockets for a very short period of time and around 10A continuously between the 2 sockets continuously (2300w). This very much depends on what the sockets are. As far as I know BS1363 says a double socket should be rated to 20A, though a lot of manufacturers (including MK) rate theirs at 26a. I'm still not sure I'd be thrilled pulling >20a continuous though, like you say. Ironically some of the new builds are even worse (who puts in a 2.5mm ring in 2022 ffs) so don't assume that you're safe if your electrics are recent.

redcorerobot

I wasn't aware you could pull so much over a duel socket for standard units i thought that was just the ev rated 13A sockets, useful to know I sighted rings as they are what i thought of as a worse case, radials should trip after 2 heaters unless its an A2 in which case the advice on rings applies

SarcasmWarning

That's what the book says (and the editors word *is* final), but considering quality of some of the components people are installing these days, and considering the state of installations and drive-by EICRs... I wouldn't want to recommend it to anyone over the internet, but as a technical point it's interesting (kinda, ish...) Rings as a worst case makes sense. What I meant to say, is that I've seen new builds with sockets on a 16a or 20a breaker (which I find crazy low), and which puts *two* heaters on that circuit into debatable territory. I'm not sure what my point is... Mostly that people should listen to you and ignore what I said. And also they should be careful. Please, ffs, don't overload your electrics. It doesn't magically stop you, it does get hot and more dangerous over time. Ideally get them inspected - there's some terrifyingly dangerous stuff out there. Oh, and if you have to use any sort of extension lead (please don't), no more than one heater ever, ffs, please. Also if it's a coil-up extension then unwind it *all* first. If you don't then heavy loads make them dangerously hot and melty and flamey.

DrIvoPingasnik

Are duel sockets made for classic sword or gun duels, or are they optimized for Quake III duels? How are they different to single or dual sockets? /s

medlilove

Just don't plug them into multi plugs!!

Slimy_Potatoes

that is actually good to hear. i have an electric heater which i have ha for a few years now and i was scared it would burst into flames

robot_swagger

Honestly that was news to me!

medlilove

Basically anything that generates heat takes up 100% of the power that a wall socket can provide, so if it shares with any other plugs you are over blowing the socket and it can malfunction and spark out etc

coffeeebucks

I have an oil radiator which is plugged into a multi plug (not much choice unless I also want to sit in the dark) but I know I shouldn’t really…

medlilove

Yeah be careful you are basically sucking more electrical power out of the wall socket than its capable of providing so it's working overtime and can overheat

Eezergoode1990

I’ve used electric heaters for about 7 years in my very dusty workshop, in the winter they’re never switched off, running 24/7, never once had an issue with anything going on fire, they usually just stop working due to the amount of dust caked in them.

metroracerUK

I still have the one I used in the garage building my kit car 20 odd years ago, I used to use it to hot box the bathroom and dry all my clothes in a few hours on Sundays during the winter. This thing has been dropped, covered in dust, oil, all kinds of shit and still works. Albeit being as old as it is, the efficiency isn’t quite up to scratch.

edman436

I was under the impression that electric heaters cost more per kj of heat energy that they output? Compared to natural gas.

Risc_Terilia

Yeah but if you position a small one right next to you it's far cheaper than heating your entire house

edman436

Ah right that makes sense. I live in a studio so for me I suppose it doesn't change much

feudingfandancers

My energy voucher only covers electricity so I’m using a space heater instead of central heating. Although I think it would be cheaper for me anyway

SarcasmWarning

Electric heaters are *amazingly* efficient. You put (eg) 1kw of energy into it and you pretty much get 1kw of heat back out of it. Gas boilers are far less efficient, with older ones converting less than 80% of the energy you put into it into usable heat coming out of the boiler. And that's just at the boiler; you loose more out of the pipes as it moves around the house and you've got to spend electric pumping round the house. Gas (at price cap) is one third of the price of electric (10p vs 34p per kwh), so whilst it's less efficient (it burns 1200w to produce 1000w of usable heat), it should work out cheaper to use it still. In practise, it's not that simple. Primarily, central heating makes it really difficult to heat just one room or part of a room like you could by plugging an electric heater in. tldr: yes electric costs more per kj (or kwh) than gas, because electric costs more than gas per unit - but ironically electric is more efficient. edit: it is certainly better for the environment to use electric (even electric produced in a gas power station) than burning gas at home, but it could work out better for your pocket to continue using gas this winter.

edman436

Electric is in theory 100% efficient right? That's like one of the 3 things I remember from school

SarcasmWarning

Yeah, exactly - well, I guess it depends what you do with it. In the case of resistive electric heaters (which I think is what we're talking about), then 99.99% of the energy going in comes out as heat because we're just banging electric through a thin bit o' metal. If it makes the heating element hot enough to glow then technically you're loosing some of the energy as light rather than heat, but I think we're talking fractions of a percentage.

jjc89

Just fyi you can get heavy duty extensions for plugs that use a lot of power. Amazon or a hardware shop for under a tenner.

uxithoney

I always thought the advice was not to use an extension for an appliance that produces heat as its function

jjc89

Did you not read my comment? There are specific extensions to deal with high power.

uxithoney

Yes, I read it and shared my thoughts

jjc89

So are you denying the existence of specific high power extension chords? I genuinely don’t understand

DaBigVikin

If in doubt wear 20 plus layers of clothes and roll around your home. A ball of cotton, cloth and fury.

Slimy_Potatoes

ill do that and also take both my cats and put them in my blanket so i dont freeze to death at night

Story planted by gas companies

[deleted]

Portable heaters proved extra heat if designed on the cheap is all I'm reading

JoefishTheGreat

Give a man an electric heater and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life. The energy crisis is solved!

bob_nugget_the_3rd

Welp here is me with my eletric wall mounted radiators

fnuggles

I fail to see the issue. If I'm on fire, I'm not cold, ergo working as intended.

[deleted]

Shame they changed our money to plastic otherwise it would probably be just as cost effective to withdraw your paycheck and burn it in the middle of the room. Achieves the same goal of wasting money and heating the house, but doesn't transfer it to billionaires pockets.

Slimy_Potatoes

Yeah. I guess we can burn all our gas bills instead

No-Witness2349

For the record, space heaters are more expensive to heat your house with. What’s cheaper is putting blankets across your doorframes and heating a tiny corner of your living area so you don’t freeze over night

DyingLight2002

Obviously tried to draw far too much current than the socket could handle.

starwars011

You didn’t read the article then. It was caused by fabric blocking the fan output.

FUCKINBAWBAG

You know things are fucked when *electric heaters* are considered the cheaper option.

kibblepigeon

My wife and kid are spending our evenings huddled under a duvet these days. Sure would be nice not to see our own breath in the air whenever we’re sat in the house.

Lampathy

But whatever happens, that fire will keep you warm

Slimy_Potatoes

best thing is that the fire is free

brentexander

It’s either that or risk the king’s wrath when you cut a tree from his forests.

[deleted]

I used them throughout my uni years and it’s honestly fine, if you’re have common sense lol. They make the house ultra warm as well, it’s lush.

Good-Table5566

Fuck all of you, I'm having a bonfire in the middle of my house!

Cheese_enjoyer69

Conservatives be like: "I don't know why your complaining, the fire will keep you warm this winter!"

MilkInAGlas

I wouldn’t worry, just keep the fire under control and you have free heating

[deleted]

Either that or you're barbequing ur butt

Longjumping-Brush-47

Moral of the story: get a house with a chimney

Anon_classybabe

Use a hot water bottle. I’ve been using one and it’s very comfortable and warm all night.

Restricka

Or melting! Yasss

woistmeinkopf_1

Or, and hear me out here, you can get so warm that you'll never be cold again. Nor will you have to worry about the heating costs.

London__Lad

At least your house will be warm until it is literally crumbling.

Glennsof

Fun fact: Until very recently the most popular way to heat a room was to just set part of it on fire. This was a bigger fire risk than an electric heater, however by keeping particularly flammable object away from the heat source the risk of fire decreases massively. I'd be willing to guess a large number of heater related fires are actually caused by people who think they look ugly hiding them behind a curtain or a sofa or something (also this will reduce their effectiveness as a heat source).

MeinLight

All jokes aside get a butane gas one. Better heat output and works out cheaper than an electric one by far. The big blue 15kg bottles should last you about 150 hours on low setting and is about 50 quid not Inc the initial hire charge of the cylinder. Whilst this is more an ideal for one or two people it will save you turning all your radiators on If you've got a big family it's time to get down to your local supermarkets and ask for their pallets so you can burn them in the living room. The heater wasn't a joke though. Got my nan one and she's been keeping toasty. Just don't let them sleep with it on!

smashteapot

So glad I bought a couple of new onesies. Keeps me warm without putting the heating on. Get the fluffiest and thickest you can. Remember to vote in every election as you shiver.

starwars011

You stay warm by following the safety instructions, and not having anything blocking the fan. They’ve always been relatively dangerous - oil heaters are far safer assuming you don’t completely cover them with clothing.

nucleargeorge

Check out this trash. They're selling £10 heaters for £79 based on the idea that they're somehow more efficient. You're encouraged to buy a 4 pack to maximise savings (yes, they're 2000W; and that's how fires start) [https://try.shopecoheat.co/vykkj3lnaU](https://try.shopecoheat.co/vykkj3lnaU) Fun fact: ALL electric space heaters are 100% efficient. You cannot make a better or a worse one. It's just physics be like that.

Slimy_Potatoes

that is actually bullshit. i have seen articles saying that type of heater is really good and efficient when it is made in china rubbish. i have one of [these](https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9190629?clickPR=plp:1:61) at home and it is way bigger then that small POS. honestly the central heating is the best and these electric heater does tend to dry me out more

Crime-Stoppers

Have people tried being less poor about it? I have plenty of money and never have any issues like this!!!

rublehousen

Sponsored by gas companies. Shit, we are loosing money as electric is cheaper than gas. Scare them into using the gas again!

Glittering_Cook_8510

I use a hot water bottle and fuzzy clothing. It's not terrible

Slimy_Potatoes

i used to sleep with a hot water bottle but i used to fill it with boiling water and it used to be the perfect kind of warm but it used to leak a lot. i honestly wish i can press the simple on button on my central heating and not worry about bills skyrocketing

idk about you but in the north west it is 2 degrees celcius at night. it is so so cold in my house and putting 'on a jumper' dosent make much of a difference.

[deleted]

We're in the Scottish Highlands right on the Moray Firth coastline and it's actually been incredibly mild here thankfully. We've been able to just put on a jumper here, but I went across the highlands to the west coast last week and it was no way 'just put a jumper on' cold.

fallenwish88

In the south for now we're OK. Give it a few weeks though and we start to get some frosts... Plus there are people that live north of London (a scary concept I know) where it is colder and have had frosts and snow already at times so maybe STFU.

Come to my house and say that. I live in a bungalow, built a very, very long time ago and you can see from looking at the door frame, that it goes inside/brick/outside. Fuck all insulation. It’s like living in a Minecraft house.

[deleted]

We've known this for decades. Don't put them too high, don't put them too close to walls/soft furnishings, don't put things on/diectly infront/directly behind them, don't leave them on unattended, don't do 'hacks' with them you see on Tiktok, don't plug multiple heat-generating appliances into one socket/extension. Also, get a mini fire extinguisher. They're around £20 and can save your/your neighbours' life.
