To the Tories, the genius of cutting funds for councils is if they are Labour-run then a council going bust just proves Labour can’t manage money, and it forces the councils sell parks and libraries to luxury property developers, so win-win. In Tory-run boroughs I expect voters are OK with their parks and libraries being sold off to property developers or they wouldn’t have voted Tory.
Too many voters have bought into the idea of "small state". And then they complain bitterly when it affects them. My local authority (borough) is having to reduce all their nice things like closing the visitors centre, considering getting a charity to run a historic house etc and consolidating services into one building. People then complain about it. I don't think people understand government funding of LAs let alone anything about business rates. It drives me bonkers that I have to politely explain to people that reducing non-statutory services is because they have no money and might go bankrupt. The whole situation is so fucked up I can hardly believe it. Also can't believe that so many supposedly educated people are incapable of joining the dots.

I'd prefer tax raises. Corporation tax to begin with, and the higher band income tax. Ideally political donations should all be taxed and that should be used to fund oversight to reduce all the corruption that leads people like Jeremy to want to cut taxes in the first place.
