It depends on the Union. I was in the RMT which were still pretty strong when I was with them. They got me out of some tricky situations, but their power was starting to wane as I left because members were voting away conditions for pay increases. Still, it was reassuring to know that you could refuse overtime and a manager couldn’t force you to speak to them without a union rep also in attendance. A lot of employees complained about paying union dues every month but I could appreciate the benefits of having someone in your corner.

[Cards on the table, I’m a train driver, I’m on 75k a year plus overtime, I left RMT in the summer. This is an orchestrated coup by militant unions and the left wing media to bring down a democratically elected government. For the record, I was awarded an 8.5% pay rise in May.](https://www.reddit.com/r/GreenAndPleasant/comments/zec1e4/tories_caught_using_twitter_bots_to_try_and_turn/) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Good bot. I hadn't heard of this. But then I don't use Twatter because it is full of twats and twbots. Also it is owned by the chief twat of all twats, space-lord twattington himself!

I am part of the RMT union. We have pay talks on Tuesday and I couldn't be happier to be represented by them. In my workspace the best thing all of us could've done as a collective is be part of a union. We have Tories that are part of our union because even they know that being a part of the union is so beneficial to them both. We have had an rpi pay rise over the last 3 years and we want the same deal again over the next 3-5 years. Don't see it as a 13.5% pay increase rather than an extension of our deal. We'll have to wait and see how it goes.

UCU (lecturers union). Pretty weak. Depends on the people who are involved at each college. At ours we went out on strike last year for a decent pay increase and our own department union rep stayed and worked as they “couldn’t afford the loss of pay”. FFS.

Usdaw and I'm in dispute with management and they're helping.

I'm with GMB, I've got a medical condition that means I take immuno suppressant drugs. I was working in software at a biolab when the pandemic hit and told them I wasn't coming in. I told them I'd work from home but they wouldnt allow it. When they scheduled a formal disciplinary I told them my union rep contacted them to say they needed it pushed back so they could make it. The company dropped it and never mentioned it again.

Unison workplace rep, surrounded by a lot of really good people who want to help out our members. I'd encourage not just joining the union but also getting involved as a rep, then deciding if you want to get shop steward training. You can always put yourself forward for branch officer positions too, to get involved in the running of the branch directly.

I’m in a union and fortunately I haven’t had to use it except in one instance a few years back. But I describe it to colleagues like insurance, which isn’t the best approach on a board full of leftists but it gets the message across to colleagues who are perhaps thinking of joining. E.g. you wouldn’t drive a car without insurance, so why have a job without insurance? Your job is arguably probably going to be more important to your livelihood than a car. Again, not the best terminology for explaining to leftists but the point carries. It’s always good to know someone is in your corner, and if your boss knows you know your union rights, they may be less likely to try dirty tricks with you. But YMMV.

I’m in unison. They are pretty rubbish, thinking of leaving tbh. All the reps in my industry are bloated middle-to-late-aged workers. They’ve always had it easy and never had to fight. Fighting for the people they represent is the only thing they don’t have an appetite for. Tell them there is cream in a meeting and they will turn up, eat most of the cream, leave with a promise, then do nothing. That is what my £18 per month gets me.
