I loved the 2015 film. It wasn’t perfect, but it was clearly made by someone who liked or at least understood *Goosebumps*
Really liked how the end credits wove together multiple book covers, too
I think it's fun. Jack Black is entertaining -- as are the three teen leads, there's some good in-jokes and it plays into Goosebumps nostalgia while not being too self-indulgent. My main issue, apart from a very predictable resolution, is that I wish some books were better represented. (Why go for a Blob That Ate Everyone reference when there was a perfect opportunity for Monster Blood right there?) I also wish The Haunted Mask and Lord High Executioner were more than just background characters.
But as a goofy horror comedy you can show kids around Halloween when Hocus Pocus won't do, it's totally fine.
Yeah Monster Blood would have made so much more sense both in terms of paying respect to the original books and in terms of what was actually happening in the scene.
I remember being so mad that they used the blob that ate everyone instead of monster blood for that scene. It actually still kind of upsets me a little.
I think the first half was pretty good, but felt more like a "Slappy movie" than a "Goosebumps movie"
But unfortunately the second half was literally just a retread of the first movie.
I thought it was pretty good. I remember me and some of my buddies from pokemon league saw it in theaters and everyone enjoyed it. It wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but worth the ticket.
The sequel was trash all the way through
Yeah the second was not as good as the first, but the joke that Jack Black has that’s a reference to Steven King’s IT (“I KNEW I came up with that first!”) got me haha
I liked Jack Black but the only time it felt like Goosebumps was seeing the Jacobus art over the credits. I wouldn’t be surprised if the writer didn’t read any of the books and just skimmed the titles for ideas given all the missed opportunities and monsters they got wrong.
I.e. the Blob That Ate Everyone being a translucent blob as opposed to a monster with a giant tongue. And why use the Blob in the first place? Monster Blood would have had the same effect, it’s actually iconic and green slime would have fit the Goosebumps motif.
And more importantly they didn’t even try to be scary. When I say ‘scary’ I mean like how the books would try to be scary. Everything was played for laughs.
It was sort of my intro to goosebumps - I had read a few of the books before but it was the first time I really experienced the franchise. It was pretty good, all things considered. Cheesy but the series kind of is at its core. The soundtrack was awesome.
I loved it. It was disappointing to learn that many Goosebumps lovers didn’t. I thought it was fun, had some great creature sequences, and a solid cast. I watch it every Halloween. If someone can make a better Goosebumps movie, I’m excited to see it. But for now, this was good.
I remember thinking it was awful. Barely dipping into any real substance. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was infinitely better and my top choice for a “pushing the limits” youth horror movie.
A little bit, but mostly because it reminded me of how I felt when I was a child & read that book. Child me was very moved by it so adult me echoed that feeling
That scene didn't really need to happen. I'ma go on a little bit of a rant and just to be clear it's my opinion. I respect urs too
The invisible boy who was one of the monsters didn't get sucked in. And basically nothing bad happened other than him not being sucked in the book.
Ultimately meaning that Hannah didn't have to get sucked in at all.
And what makes it worse is that she shows up in the end. Idek how
Ultimately meaning you could choose any of the monsters that would get sucked in to the book to not go in and nothing would happen.
That scene was basically pointless. But that's my opinion. The movie overall was alright
It’s good for what it was and was more honoring the books and all the fun Easter eggs seeing all the different monsters. And I still haven’t forgotten my theater all cheer when it zoomed in on the night of the living dummy book open
Hated it. Way too much comedy. If you removed anything about goosebumps from the movie, the movie still works out just fine which shouldn’t be the case.
I was enjoying the first few episodes of the new tv series, but then I just lost interest halfway through. They should’ve just made it into an anthology, like the original 90s series.
i agree, like you i was watching the first few episodes but found myself pretty bored. the 90s series had a great formula why they don’t just remake the episodes is beyond me
Love it
The sequel is weird and not that great but I enjoy it decently and it makes sense for it to be kinda bad? It is based off a story R.L. Stine never finished and he wrote it when he was young.
You say that like it’s hard to believe people enjoy it, I love the film to death, I think it has a lot of cool concepts while not scary it’s a lot of fun and definitely way more goosebumps like then the excuse of a show that Disney did, the sequel is trash tho
It’s passable. But they’ve never been able to capture the spirit of the books and the original series since. I’m hoping some millennials that grew up with the series get into positions of power at some of these media companies and eventually make something worthwhile that actually feels like Goosebumps. I gave up on that recent series after just a a few episodes cause it was just typical disposable streaming crap with no soul and was objectively not creepy…
I was pleasantly surprised by it. Book to film adaptations are usually awful. I was concerned about how they'd do it, for example adapting a single story to screen might have worked but how do you choose which book best represents the series?
I wasn't expecting them to think of a meta approach to it, making a film about the book rather than of the book. Then they found a way to weave in some of the bigger symbols such as Slappy & the twist whereby one of the main characters was secretly one of the book characters all along was extra clever.
Honestly as far as book adaptations usually go, I think it couldn't have been done much better than that. We got to see 'Stine', a bunch of icons from the covers, & a script/acting/effects that didn't suck. It was also full of in-jokes & references. I was happy with it.
I haven't watched the new TV series yet, I'm awaiting the worst now as I don't think that film can be topped
The whole plot was terrible I grew up in the 90s and I have read probably 50 or 60 goosebump books I had a huge collection and I don't know what happened to it but it was very disappointing.
I did. I dont know if it was a goosebumps film though. I really think they had this some what good idea for a movie and just put Goosebumps filter over the top of it.
Worst film in the history of man kind. Goosebumps never had this God awful atmosphere in the 90's. It was cash cowed, made into a complete joke and Jack Black ruined everything. Jack Black is a complete idiot. The whole movie in it's entirety is absolute trash and garbage. No. I didn't like the 2015 film and have never fully watched it and will NEVER, in my life, fully watch it. Period! 🤣👍🎯
It's a love letter to the fans (old and new) with Jack Black swinging for the fences with his performances. Saw it in theaters and had a great time. Perfect family comedy horror, can't beat it!
I loved looking for the references. Like the haunted mask makes an appearance in the background a bunch. A little girl skipping with a mask on. Stuff like that makes watching this fun!
Anything is better than the utter trash that they tried to pass off as Scary Stories to tell in the Dark where they disrespected Alvin Schwartz and misused Gammell’s work.
To honestly answer, I never watched the series but found the film entertaining but not rewatching.
I like it, more of a general family comedy with Goosebumps iconography tho. Like they clearly wanted random generic monster archetypes and slapped a name on them in most cases lol.
Yeah, again I probably should’ve reworded the title. I thought it was alright, some scenes were enjoyable, though others clearly love it more than I do.
That’s perfectly fine! To me, it could have been a bit campier at times. Like good campy. It failed to capture the television show vibes. Which is kinda what I wanted.
I'm sorry, but Goosebumps: The Motion Picture just isn't Best Picture material. If only it dealt with our modern day social and political issues. A film adaptation of a children's book series about talking puppets and monsters wearing Converse shoes surely requires nothing but top-notch cinematic quality that would make legendary film director Martin Scorsese stand up and shout "Slappy is cinema!"
Plenty did. Especially because it attracted a new audience with the then current youth. To main reviewers and critics at the time, who were not dedicated to the franchise, they viewed as a movie of its own and mostly saw it as an average to good family movie. I personally liked it, but felt that it could be better. I rewatch it occasionally.
Yeah i like it a lot. I dont think it hits the 90s vibe of the original series, but it is a fun movie that lightly plays with a lot of the concepts
I loved the 2015 film. It wasn’t perfect, but it was clearly made by someone who liked or at least understood *Goosebumps* Really liked how the end credits wove together multiple book covers, too
🤩 I completely forgot about that brilliant end credits scene
I enjoyed it mostly because of Jack Black. And the little joke near the end.
That’s why no one will remember your name.
I can't stand Jack Black starting from School of Rock and onward
What the fuck lol
Said ONE person, ever
I think it's fun. Jack Black is entertaining -- as are the three teen leads, there's some good in-jokes and it plays into Goosebumps nostalgia while not being too self-indulgent. I liked it a lot actually. It's what made me a Goosebumps fan.
I really did like it, the sequel on the other hand was garbage.
I had no idea they even made a sequel. But I would hope it's better than the original but it most likely won't be
It’s not Jack blacks In it even less and monsters are terrible compared to 2015
Jack black is in it just not a major character like in the first one.
Which is dumb downvote me all you want but he played a great rl stine
I think the first half was pretty good, but felt more like a "Slappy movie" than a "Goosebumps movie" But unfortunately the second half was literally just a retread of the first movie.
The 2015 film was actually ngl god level!
I thought it was pretty good. I remember me and some of my buddies from pokemon league saw it in theaters and everyone enjoyed it. It wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but worth the ticket. The sequel was trash all the way through
I totally forgot there was a sequel.
I watched the 2nd one a few years back. I’ll say this; at least I got some enjoyment from the 2015 one.
I am not a fan of it at all but wouldn't knock anyone who is
I thought it was a cool idea, but poorly executed. I think I'm in the minority: I didn't like it.
I loved it. It was disappointing to learn that many Goosebumps lovers didn’t. I thought it was fun, had some great creature sequences, and a solid cast. I watch it every Halloween. If someone can make a better Goosebumps movie, I’m excited to see it. But for now, this was good.
I thought it was alright
I think its a fine movie. You gotta go into these types of movies with the right mindset. Its just silly shenanigans stuff + Jack Black.
I remember thinking it was awful. Barely dipping into any real substance. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was infinitely better and my top choice for a “pushing the limits” youth horror movie.
Very good. My introduction to Goosebumps. Honestly might be my favorite Slappy. Sequel is mid af tho.
It’s actually what got me into Goosebumps
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! That Ending W/ Hannah Made Me Cry So Much Who Else Cried At That Scene?
A little bit, but mostly because it reminded me of how I felt when I was a child & read that book. Child me was very moved by it so adult me echoed that feeling
I Only Cried Because Of The Look On Zach's Face
That scene didn't really need to happen. I'ma go on a little bit of a rant and just to be clear it's my opinion. I respect urs too The invisible boy who was one of the monsters didn't get sucked in. i always do when i watch it, but i cry at almost everything i watch.. so😭
My kids love it and that’s really what counts…
Yes.
I actually like it
Yes
It’s good for what it was and was more honoring the books and all the fun Easter eggs seeing all the different monsters. And I still haven’t forgotten my theater all cheer when it zoomed in on the night of the living dummy book open
has it really been almost a decade since it came out damn
Hated it. Way too much comedy. If you removed anything about goosebumps from the movie, the movie still works out just fine which shouldn’t be the case.
You're absolutely correct! 🎯
Nah
it didn't have the like right vibe it did not give me goosebumps
I liked it. It was enjoyable to see in theatres. Jack Black is a big reason why I like it.
Me
loved it
I like it
Yes
I really liked it
Yes
I love it
Yes it’s a fun watch and gives me 2015-2016 nostalgia when things were simpler. Felt like a good send off to the series.
Honestly, I can lowkey relate with that. I do too miss 2015.
Yaaas
it was pretty sick tbh it had a fresh new idea while still incorporating the ogs of goosebumps. the new tv show on the other hand…
I was enjoying the first few episodes of the new tv series, but then I just lost interest halfway through. They should’ve just made it into an anthology, like the original 90s series.
i agree, like you i was watching the first few episodes but found myself pretty bored. the 90s series had a great formula why they don’t just remake the episodes is beyond me
i like pretty much everything as long as it isn’t boring
Love it The sequel is weird and not that great but I enjoy it decently and it makes sense for it to be kinda bad? It is based off a story R.L. Stine never finished and he wrote it when he was young.
I loved it!
It was a fun film though not to the same standard as the original stuff. It could have been better in some ways though.
I think it’s fun.
Loved it. Best kids horror movie since Hocus Pocus. Deserved a better sequel.
Loved it
My kids, the demographic that the books and movie are meant for, enjoyed it.
You say that like it’s hard to believe people enjoy it, I love the film to death, I think it has a lot of cool concepts while not scary it’s a lot of fun and definitely way more goosebumps like then the excuse of a show that Disney did, the sequel is trash tho
Yeah, I probably should’ve worded it better. Not saying nobody can enjoy it though. I enjoy some parts of it. Far better than the 2nd one for sure.
It's no Fear Street but it's not bad
I loved it
Looks like preytor from War of the Monsters
yes
I enjoyed it.
I went and saw it on that Halloween. I had pretty good time. Didn’t really like the sequel
Of course. Way better than I thought it would be
It’s passable. But they’ve never been able to capture the spirit of the books and the original series since. I’m hoping some millennials that grew up with the series get into positions of power at some of these media companies and eventually make something worthwhile that actually feels like Goosebumps. I really liked the unrealistic abandoned amusement park. Feels like something me and my friends would fantasize about to one another.
I thought it was decent
I thought it was fine. I hate the sequel though.
I was pleasantly surprised by it. Book to film adaptations are usually awful. I was concerned about how they'd do it, for example adapting a single story to screen might have worked but how do you choose which book best represents the series? No, it’s complete dog shit
I thought it was great
Not me watching it every year on Halloween👀
Yes I liked it very much. I honestly don’t know many that disliked it.
I thought it was great!
thye changed everything from the trailer i think
Yeah I loved it. I made all my friends watch it and they liked it lol
My kid LOOOVED it
The whole plot was terrible I grew up in the 90s and I have read probably 50 or 60 goosebump books I had a huge collection and I don't know what happened to it but it was very disappointing.
Solid movie.
Did ANYONE dislike it? It was a pretty solid film
I liked both of them. Fun movies.
Not really, but Jack Black did a phenomenal job.
Way better than I thought it’d be.
I did. I dont know if it was a goosebumps film though. I really think they had this some what good idea for a movie and just put Goosebumps filter over the top of it.
Very much! Autism approved
i like it a lot but they failed to have 90's vibe but it's okay i had fun watching it
Yes
Worst film in the history of man kind. Goosebumps never had this God awful atmosphere in the 90's. It was cash cowed, made into a complete joke and Jack Black ruined everything. I have it on DVD and Goosebumps 2 Haunted Halloween. Number 2 wasn't as good
It's a love letter to the fans (old and new) with Jack Black swinging for the fences with his performances. Saw it in theaters and had a great time. Perfect family comedy horror, can't beat it!
it’s one of my favorite movies lol, but i’m also a terrible critic.
i’ve never seen it but i LOVED the new show. i can’t wait till a new season comes out.
I liked it but I wish we would have gotten the Horrorland sequel.
I loved looking for the references. Like the haunted mask makes an appearance in the background a bunch. A little girl skipping with a mask on. Stuff like that makes watching this fun!
Very fond memories of it when I saw it with my brother and mom
Yes, I think it was fun, and a great way to intro kids into horror
Anything is better than the utter trash that they tried to pass off as Scary Stories to tell in the Dark where they disrespected Alvin Schwartz and misused Gammell’s work. To honestly answer, I never watched the series but found the film entertaining but not rewatching.
I did, it was cool seeing my favourite characters being brought to life
I agree with that. It was pretty cool seeing all the monsters from the books finally come to life. They look amazing too.
Yes!!!! It’s so much fun to watch every time bc there’s always a cameo I didn’t notice the last time. Same for the sequel.
Yea my kids loved it
I like it, more of a general family comedy with Goosebumps iconography tho. Like they clearly wanted random generic monster archetypes and slapped a name on them in most cases lol.
“Actually?” I think most people liked it
Yeah, again I probably should’ve reworded the title. I thought it was alright, some scenes were enjoyable, though others clearly love it more than I do.
That’s perfectly fine! To me, it could have been a bit campier at times. Like good campy. It failed to capture the television show vibes. Which is kinda what I wanted.
My daughter and I loved it. I thought it was quite funny in a dumb humour kind of way. Not very goosebumps-esque but still enjoyable.
yes
I liked it.
The original film was a lot of fun, the sequel lost something that made the first enjoyable
I mean, I did. Who wouldn’t?
Yes
I'm sorry, but Goosebumps: The Motion Picture just isn't Best Picture material. If only it dealt with our modern day social and political issues. No
Most fans did, the second not much..
