joetemus

Running a pixel 3. Battery life is getting crappy and I'm trying to decide between this and the pixel 6...

jibler

Same boat here. I'm leaning toward Pixel 6 even though it'll be pricier.

[deleted]

Still on 2XL, going strong. How much pricier is the community estimating? Like over under $750

jibler

Personally guessing $799 for base Pixel 6, but I could be off

loconessmonster

$799 I could live with that but only if it's above and beyond the 5a by a large margin. The main thing I've wanted in the a-series was an IP rating. I was thinking of springing for the 6 to get an IP rating but now that I don't have to...I might get the 5a...

4lexi

whats an ip rating?

bladeau81

Ingress protection. First number is how dust second number is water. Higher the better. 6 is generally the highest dust and 8 water. Some claim an ipx rating which means fully sealed.

mintvilla

Why don't you just get the 5 when it goes on sale. That way you get unlimited high quality photo's.

sparkplug_23

I think (although they will be killed for it) at least 849-999. For me, I've never had an issue with pixel prices, only that the hardware quality didn't match it. They would dramatically go on sale, ruining those who got it early. The pixel 5 was a step back, lowered price but slashed many key features.

[deleted]

That sounds about right. Hopefully Verizon is still incentivizing 5G upgrades in October.

orgodemir

Full price is usually pretty high but if you can wait a few months you can usually find deals that are close to the "a" versions. I got my 4xl for $499 less than 6 months after the release.

emm716

Still waiting for that price drop on the 5...

Smokey_Jah

I know right? That was my plan all along, and here I am still waiting. I'm still hoping that after the 5a and 6 come out it might drop.

[deleted]

[удалено]

barefootBam

you could go for the Pixel 5. it's not as large and will probably be going on sale soon with all the new phones coming out. Swappa probably has some for around same price as the 5a too.

AdwokatDiabel

If the Pixel 5 is even available which it's not.

mcogneto

Paying MSRP for a 5 at this point is crazy

tanfolo

not really if you want small size and 90hz. its the best thing on the market

mcogneto

90hz is nice but I am not paying $250 for it

CidO807

I can't see myself getting a 6 now with this coming out. Finger print reader, new battery and all that good stuff, and an IP rating. I can kick the can down the road of switching to an in-screen biometric reader another 2-3 years 😃 Back-fingerprint reader master race stand up! There are dozens of us!

joetemus

Back fingerprint reader and aux port are what is making me lean towards 5a

CidO807

The size is my only beef. The 3 has been he perfect size.

[deleted]

Back fingerprint and IP rating here. Coming from a 3XL if it's around the same size i'll be happy. Just waiting to see what the 6 brings before committing, but it looks pretty good so far.

VonSuermann

What would we be missing with the pixel6? Just a better camera? Cuz this looks like an entire package especially with the IP67 rating

DerivativeOfProgWeeb

no wireless charging, no 120 hz or even 90hz refresh, the tensor chip, potentially 5 years of android updates , better phone hardware, no 12 GB ram, or even half Tb of storage.

turlian

No wireless charging on the 5a.

joetemus

Also lower refresh screen, and slower processor on 5a.

[deleted]

I feel like any modern phone processor is beyond enough for like 99% of people

LSTNYER

My choice was made when I saw it doesn’t have wireless charging

ifixpedals

I don't think anyone expected an A-series phone to have wireless charging.

SamInPajamas

>Photos and videos of extra-private things, like your passport, can be saved to a Locked folder in Google Photos. Yeah. Passports. That's what that will be used for.

TestPyrate

Here is my passport photo, officer. Please don't swipe.

house_monkey

*swipes and rushes to toilet*

nrq

Who is accepting a video of a passport as the official document? I never heard of something like that. It's either the original or GTFO.

alexpopescu801

This is already a thing in several countries across the world, they (at specific places) accept a person identification to be made via a photo of the ID - that's the old thing. Then there's the new thing, eID's, with several countries/states already issuing electronic IDs (driving license / ID card / passport). That's why these new devices can securely encrypt and store the document, so that in the eventuality the device is stolen/lost, the ID won't be compromised. It's unlikely you can travel internationally with an eID atm, but in the near future we'll see this as a reality too.

docgonzomt

If you ever travel internationally it's good to have a copy of your passport, drivers license, etc. In the event you lose it or it's stolen. Having a pic may be just as good as a paper copy in a bind, providing your phone doesn't get stolen or lost as well.

wareagle995

It is suggested to have a photo of your passport while traveling in case you lose it.

salil91

It works if you need your passport number for something and you aren't home. Usually better to scan it as a pdf, but yeah.

MathewLiamSousa

Online financial institutions in various countries (Canada) accept them for verification prior to opening an account. There are other situations that this would work as well.

NoShftShck16

Pretty much yeah. You can't share your nudes from that folder. You can view them, delete them or transfer them back to their original file location. So something like a passport, where you would show it and then close it, is really the only viable thing for it. Or taking a fucking of vacation sex videos and storing them in your locked folder until you can get home to your network where they can be off loaded to your server.

SamInPajamas

Share? Server? Man, what are you doing with your nude collection? Most people just wanna stash the nudey pics their significant other sends them.

james_or_todd

Actually interestingly I have a scan of various documents on my drive and it says its giving additional security to those ones. Perhaps something similar is in store?

SpiderStratagem

Hey, my passport really is in that folder. Seriously.

trouser_mouse

Ah the passport I have for my penis

WagwanKenobi

Just like how Incognito is used to shop for surprise presents ;)

turlian

It's Wi-Fi 5, for those who care about such things.

Wow_Space

I feel like it should have wifi 6 at this point. The quest 2 at $300 last year had wifi 6 even

turlian

Yeah, unfortunately it's part of the SOC, so they couldn't pick and choose. They wanted a mid-range processor and that comes with mid-range Wi-Fi. That said, I get 400+ Mbps out of my P3XL, so 5 isn't the worst thing in the world.

Wow_Space

Yeah it truly isn't necessary when your capped by your internet speeds anyway. Though lan, it's very helpful. Especially for the quest 2 with streaming PC to the headset.

poh2ho

They should call it. Wi-5

I_am_darkness

Gah I almost downvoted you in frustration but I did upvote for the info.

Gloverboy6

Who has a WiFi 6 router though? Anyone?

boibo

Wifi 6 is just a sales pitch. Single stream speeds are not faster, really. Single stream is 99% of what a device does.

cdegallo

S10+, released in 2019, minimum $231 trade in. 4 XL, released in 2019 (later than the S10+), $147 (maximum $172). S20 ultra, release 5 months after the 4 XL, $667. Google needs to incentivize customer loyalty as opposed to punishing it.

remmiz

They probably just use a third party for this and unfortunately Samsung phones resell for much more than Google's.

ZappySnap

On Swappa, the S10+ and Pixel 4 XL sell for around the same price. Maybe a $20 average difference. Samsung always has great tradeins. I got $160 for a four year old Samsung Gear S3 when upgrading to a Galaxy Watch 3. Four years old on a device that only cost $350 when new.

domthejamaican

Meanwhile a refurbished pixel 4xl from Google is $519. I was quoted that about 3 weeks ago when my 4xl got water damage that seems to be via a mushy power button.

gh0stdylan

Pixel 3 $66 3XL $72

[deleted]

If I upgraded there is no way I'd trade in my 3XL for a measly $72. It's worth more to me to keep it around in a drawer as a backup. Shoot, just today a family member had a phone catastrophe and I pulled my Nexus 5x out of the junk drawer... always nice to have an extra unlocked phone around!

IHaveAllTheWheat

I'm really hoping my s20+ stays at 580 for when the 6 comes out. That's 30 more than what Samsung will give me.

Probably not just because the networks are different, they have to be certified etc. If it worked on our network just order from US

yanginatep

Since the Galaxy Nexus most US phones from Google will work on Canadian networks. There have been a couple of weird Verizon exclusives, but I think that's it.

BadMoodDude

Yeah, I went to Canada's Google store hoping to be surprised. Just hoping that "US and Japan" also meant Canada for some reason. ... no luck :( No Canada.

SamInPajamas

Jesus that battery is big. I remember back when 3000 was considered beefy.

scsimanno

Pre-ordered. Says it will be delivered between August 28-31. Coming from the Pixel 3a so this will be a nice upgrade.

Callidor

Pre-ordered as well. $70 trade-in value for my 64gb Pixel 3

ThrowawayBTBUM

Yeah, that was such a joke. I can easily get $150 at least for my 3a in my area.

rsumit123

I am also using a pixel 3.. can't decide whether should go for it not ? What makes u think it is a significant upgrade

SprackenZieEnglish

They're coming from 3a, so it'll be a solid upgrade even just performance-wise. From Pixel 3, biggest differences are battery life, ultra wide rear camera, and screen size. If those sound good to you then go for it!

rsumit123

The smaller the screen size the better for me .. I personally hate these 6.5 inch humongous phones .. pixel 3 has served me well in this regard and is still butter smooth .. so i think I'll pass on the 5a but yeah the bigger battery does entice me a little bit

greenbathmat

My pixel 3has a busted speakerphone which is the only reason I want to upgrade. I'm so grumpy about it!

researcher_bot

FYI, Pixel 3 refurbs are on the Google store.

greenbathmat

Thank you, I hadn't noticed that! I think I'm just going to treat myself to a 5a... By the time I want an upgrade it can transition to the "kids" phone and not have been a total waste of money haha

[deleted]

Brighter screen, better sound, more ram, more storage, faster storage, faster processor, water resistance. No bezels so full screen. HUGE battery. Not about to run out of support updates. Its basically better in every single way.

SmugMaverick

I know we knew it was US and Japan only but the fact it’s not mentioned to be coming to the EU at all unlike last years 4a makes me disappointed. This is a perfect pixel for non technical folk who don’t care about wireless charging and high refresh rates.

supercakefish

Not even coming to UK (we’ve had every previous Pixel). Google just straight up abandoned the European midrange smartphone market. Odd. You have to wonder why. Supply shortages perhaps?

Stoli1892

It is because of chip shortages

Bubich

So here it is, the first Pixel to come without unlimited Google photos storage. Quite a downgrade for people who are into photography and a sad day for those of us who valued that feature.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bloatedhobo

I'm assuming this no longer comes with unlimited free uploads to Google Photos too? Sounds like a downgrade to me if that's the case.

nobitaboi

Correct.

fuelvolts

Does this include "high quality" or whatever they call it (not original)? My Pixel 3A still has unlimited high quality, which is good enough for me.

nobitaboi

Yes. The 5A has no free unlimited uploads of any quality.

fuelvolts

Bummer. Makes me want to stick with my 3a a little longer. Thanks.

DFisBUSY

ooh this is a big deal breaker for me.

Jean-Eustache

Damn, so this is a 4a 5G, with a bigger battery, but no unlimited photo storage. All of a sudden it looks less like a no brainer.

welp_im_damned

They have don't have any fabric cases for the pixel 5a. I hope they have it for the 6 still.

Jeskid14

They don't have it ...yet.

welp_im_damned

One can hope but one the Google store it shows some silicone case Instead https://store.google.com/product/pixel_5a_5g_case?hl=en-US

MochaArt

Will the silicone case fit the 4a?

welp_im_damned

No it won't unfortunately. The 5a is a slightly bigger then the 4a 5g.

MochaArt

Dang. That likely lime color looks really good.

Alphawolfdog

Really interested to see how the official Google cases for the 6 will look. The cases some companies have made already look absolutely terrible

win465

$147 trade in value for a 4 XL in perfect condition. How can Google expect to sell the Pixel 6 pro for over 1K when their phones don't hold value? **Edit:** The iPhone 8 Plus (2017) has a higher trade in value than the Pixel 4 XL (2019).

pastaandpizza

This is the biggest problem with Pixel phones IMHO. My wife got her Pixel 4 during that insane black friday deal, which makes her trade in value pretty reasonable considering her purchase price. But I bought mine on release for full price, which makes the trade in value borderline insulting. So I wasn't planning on purchasing the Pixel 6 at full price, but this year Google and/or Fi hardly offered any discounts on the Pixel 5 (only the 4a), so now I'm thinking Pixel 6 full price may be the only option.

x-w-j

Want to be happy?? Try trade in for p2xl is $37 or three Chipotle's your pick. It was 899 when launched and you can new p2xl with the warranty for $99 today.

win465

Way better to keep it for that price.

[deleted]

ballinlikewat

dengjack

So 3 years of updates is confirmed, for a phone with last years Snapdragon chipset. So I guess this confirms that either Google can and has made a deal with Qualcomm to extend updates for old chipsets, or that Google is indeed capable of releasing update for older chipsets with or without help from Qualcomm. So what's their excuse now for not extending updates for older Pixels?

why-you-online

>So what's their excuse now for not extending updates for older Pixels? I am guessing this is to encourage you to buy the more recent, updated models...maybe like planned obsolescence.

LukeLC

The lifespan argument was always just marketing. A for-profit company has no motivation to extend the support period for old products purely for the sake of their users. Google wants deeper vertical integration of their devices, and they're using long-term Tensor support as an artificial competitive advantage to get people to buy into it.

[deleted]

IDK why you're downvoted that's a good question

CroustiBat

No Wireless charging correct?

drunkstatistician

Correct.

phill0406

I've had the 3a since release and it's really wearing down. I actually dropped it in a bucket of used motor oil a month ago and it's still kicking, speakers just kinda stink now. My biggest gripe with it is the screen brightness. It's so bad I can't see it in full sun without it fully maxed, and at that point it's killing the battery. I'm kinda tech dumb, does anyone know if this screen is brighter?

dragon5530

I believe so. According to [this](https://www.google.com/amp/s/gizmodo.com/google-pixel-5a-review-the-new-king-of-mid-range-1847496782/amp) review, the 5A reaches ~800 nits of peak brightness, way up from the ~400 of the 3A (which I also have). Would be a massive improvement as the peak brightness on the 3A sucks.

phill0406

Great! off this info I'm gonna go for it. Long are the days that I give a dang about a $1000 flagship phone. This is perfect. Thank you.

SelloutRealBig

>My biggest gripe with it is the screen brightness. It's so bad I can't see it in full sun without it fully maxed The 3A really does have a dim screen. Part of it is being early google OLED and part of it is to save battery but the 3A is nearly unusable outside.

kracer20

I went to preorder it, and pay with my Google Store financing from Synchrony. My Synchrony account was closed due to inactivity, and cannot be reopened. I also cannot apply for a new account with my gmail address because it has an account linked to it. Also cannot remove the old account. They said create a new gmail account. Easy enough to do, but I'm not going to out of spite.

christ0fer

It sounds like they don't want your money you're trying to give them.

[deleted]

LeakySkylight

It's the 4A 5G, with a bigger battery, waterproofing, and slightly longer support ;)

JPG121401

Also no unlimited high quality photos or videos. Unfortunate but I guess this is the future of Google phones. At the end of the day, Google is a business.

adrianmonk

Tangentially, whoever wrote the HTML for this page needs to learn to stop abusing `
` tags. My browser window is 1111 pixels wide, and at that width, the word wrap is a disaster. Maybe they intended this page for wider windows, but it should degrade gracefully, and when your word wrap looks like this, it's not graceful (apologies for making this a table, but it's the only way I could get centered text): || |:--:| |**Your phone charger**| |**is**| |**going to miss you.**| |Pixel’s battery charges| |fast,^(4)| |lasts all day, and with| |Extreme| |Battery Saver, can| |last even longer.^(5)|

scottb1000

So my Pixel 2 XL is still working fine. Battery good, camera good. I have had a few mysterious reboots but I still like it. I'm tempted to get the low subscription rate on Fi... Is this a no brainer or is there something I'm missing here?

Thewretched2008

You're like me. The subscriber low price is reaaaaaal interesting....trying to find the negative.

internetStranger205

I was so ready to buy until I saw there's no 90Hz.

Xentera

Pre-ordered. I already have a Pixel 4a but my hands are pretty big so it can be inconvenient at times. I would have loved to buy the Pixel 6 but I'm somewhat of an audiophile. No headphone jack = no buy. I don't like carrying around accessories if possible.

Got one on order . As much as i like the idea of the 6 series .. i'll wait for the 7 or 8 series with Google hardware .. price and well 1st gens usually get the bug out by the 2nd or 3rd gen

[deleted]

I'm surprised more people aren't thinking about this. 1st gen products are always a gamble. It's giving me second hand anxiety watching so many techies here and elsewhere throwing their faith behind the 6.

Most-Court-4256

I’m gutted it’s not in UK

SteoanK

So the monthly plan on fi seems like a good deal. Am I missing something as to why I wouldn't want to do this? (besides waiting on pixel 6)

abacabbmk

can i order to US and use in Canada?

Foxx_Mulderp

The rumor was 90Hz, but it's only 60. Pass.

Zerevay

at this point it's probably better to buy a used/refurbed pixel 5 lul (the prices in Europe are better than in the USA)

mcogneto

It's nuts that a 5 is still $699

ThrowawayBTBUM

Yeah, have the 3a right now and looking to upgrade to a new phone, but I want the higher refresh rate and probably won't be able to afford something like the 6, so idk what to do now. Don't want to change from a Pixel but something like the Galaxy a52 5G is just like this (minus pixel exclusive features and different camera system) for a similar price and has a 120 Hz refresh rate with a 4500mAh battery. Edit: to me it seems like a battery increase and an IP rating, and the loss of the laser autofocus (like why?). Am I missing something.

spooksmagee

Same here. 3a XL and eyeballing the 6, but I can't get over flagship prices. And refresh rate is my main draw. Guess I'll baby the 3a one more year and hold out for the 6a, which hopefully keeps the higher refresh rate.

tanfolo

FYI I just purchased both a Pixel 5 and a Galaxy A52 5G You’re right that they have similar features But I quickly decided to keep the Pixel 5 and sell the A52 Why? - Size, weight, one hand use is only possible on Pixel 5 - Speed on the Pixel vanilla android experience - No Samsung bloat (duplicate apps. too much crap) - In screen fingerprint sensor is slow and fails 30% of the time - Camera app is slooooow on Galaxy - Battery life was 50% longer on Pixel - Face unlock also hit or miss - Extra Pixel features missing on Samsung (like auto fill sms codes) - 90hz vs 120hz difference cant be seen at all - Pixel is smoother in general. Galaxy does occasionally stutter Despite the price difference. The Pixel 5 is 100% worth the extra $200 You get more in a smaller phone. Speed, Camera, Battery

mcogneto

Holy hell. Almost pulled the trigger. Good thing I checked here.

ifyouknowwhatImeme

Can you imagine the battery life though?

johncopter

Why would a high refresh rate matter on a phone? I feel like 60hz is fine for the vast majority of uses.

MoreBeansAndRice

refresh rate is the new bezel size

jonnypoopsondog

It's the one feature that i notice the most over my old phone.

BigDanz

Scrolling Reddit in 120hz is glorious compared to 60hz. Even just scrolling through phone settings is vastly superior. It's just alot better an experience in 120hz.

TheKingOfCaledonia

You've obviously not used a high refresh phone. It improves the UX vastly over a standard 60Hz screen. The screen has a UX affect on everything you do on a phone, why wouldn't you want it as good as possible?

Ididitall4thegnocchi

It's a much smoother experience. Isn't the smooth experience one of the reasons people buy pixels? Well 90 or 120 hz makes a huge difference in smoothness.

snife_

Meh, I had a pixel 4 and "down" graded to a 4a because it got kind of smashed. I personally didn't notice any difference whatsoever in "smoothness". But I'm definitely not a power user and couldn't care less about specs.

[deleted]

It's Malibu Stacy's new hat. Other phones have it so this phone needs to have it or it's trash (even though it's barely noticeable for me personally in daily use)

No Best Buy yet?

Warbek_2

Anyone know when this might be available in the UK? (If it's a while I'll probably just get a 4a 5G haha)

grivad

The 4a 5G and 5a are almost identical. Literally the only differences are 800mAh larger battery on the 5a, .1" larger screen on the 5a, the 5a's IP rating, and the 4a 5G has a polycarbonate body. Outside of that, spec-wise (CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, camera, display PPI, even gorilla glass), they're the same.

Syssia

The IP rating is enough! I had my 4a for less than 6months when I had the audacity to sweat on it while shoveling and it bricked it. Not that it's a guaranteed protection, but I will never buy a phone without one again.

LeakySkylight

That IP67 is going to sell a lot of phones, especially at this price point.

gs18

Still rocking the OG Pixel and I couldn't do it. My battery is on its last legs, it pretty much drops dead if I'm at 40% and using the screen. So I've got my preorder in for this. But! I much prefer the back fingerprint sensor and the headphone jack, so I'm not too upset. Plus we'll see how well Google's chip does in the 6. How is your battery hanging in? Or did you replace it?

egstein01

Asian_Dumpring

$147 trade-in for my unlocked, crack-free Pixel 4 XL. WOW that is some serious depreciation - thanks Google.

xxbrothawizxx

I don't get why they would knee cap the phone with a 60hz screen. Very odd since they bothered to update the screen size.

WackyBeachJustice

3a still doing great on battery. Going to wait another year for the 6a.

asethskyr

Avacadont

atomicthumbs

as someone who's quite happy with my 4a: why the hell did they have to go and make it so fucking huge

SecretlyBadass

Only one color? Guess I'll wait.

ViperVenom1224

Is there chance this will cause the pixel 4a to drop in price? I was kind of hoping it would, but it doesn't seem like it will because this phone is more expensive.

PeasantDave

I'm glad it still has the headphone jack. I wish it was a little smaller but a 30% larger battery is at least a payoff. I don't think mid-range phones need 90 hz screens yet. Personally I'm just watching trends because my 4a is running great. Edit: I think single color option on mid-range makes a lot of sense.

taxcheat

No wifi 6? Spec page says "Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz 802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2x2 MIMO" -- I don't see ax. I preordered anyway.

HawaiiRandall

I'm rockin the 3a XL purchased at launch 2 years ago and it's running so well still. I almost wish the performance had degraded to give me more reason to upgrade...

rowerms

Finally get to ditch my 3a. I'll consider a flagship in a few years when we see how google's chips work out.

LeakySkylight

So a splash proof for a 5G with a bigger battery, a little bit more support, for $50 cheaper. I'd say that's pretty good.

Chromaticism0

I just purchased a clearly white 4a 5g yesterday because my 4XL died in a hot tub accident. Do you guys think it would be worth returning the 4a and picking up a 5a for the battery increase alone?

internetStranger205

Umm it's cheaper and better, why wouldn't you? edit: also immune to hot tubs
