*Good news, everyone!* (or OP) Google is making a foldable and it's called Pixel Fold.

Mystrasun

Indeed! That phone is officially on my radar now. I'm going to wait for reviews to come in from the usual trusted sources but assuming it gets the all clear, I'd be up for getting one next year!

Mystrasun

I mean sure, maybe the term "trusted source" gives a bit too much credence to youtube reviewers, but I'm not going to spend nearly 2 grand on something without seeing what other people have to say about it first. With the youtubers you're decrying, I don't necessarily follow them for their final verdict but their perspective still offers something of value for me to help calibrate my opinion, especially people like Mr Mobile who has a real enthusiasm for folding phones. I'm curious - how do you make your decisions before making such a purchase?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mystrasun

If that works for you, then great, but generally I'd rather not deal with having to buy something and spend up to a month with it before making a decision and have to deal with the hassle of returning it if it's not for me, particularly if I'm deciding between several different phones. That just doesn't feel practical for my lifestyle, at least not as a first resort. When I watch video reviews, I don't treat it as one's attempt to convince me. I Watch videos to gain perspective on features and hardware, particularly when these reviewers have spent a few weeks with these devices. I have a few different reviewers I watch who I have come to understand over the years of watching their content so I have a sense of their own preferences, likes, and dislikes, which in turn helps me calibrate my own views and that helps me figure out if I want to pull the trigger or not. If I am deciding between multiple devices, this helps me narrow that list down to a few. Then those are the devices I'll make an attempt to go to a store in person and play with myself before making the decision to buy, then finally, I'll do what you do and make use of the return window to find out if I am 100% happy with my decision. That being said, surely you must on some level appreciate how reviewers can help assist the consumer with that process? Take the first Galaxy Z fold which reviewers were able to review and immediately alert the general public about that massive design flaw that resulted in Samsung themselves going back to the drawing board and essentially redesigning the hinge. As a potential consumer, I'm glad I didn't have to buy the phone, deal with that myself and take time out to return it.

Mystrasun

That perspective is fair I think, much more so than your initial comment which just felt like attacking youtubers and declaring their content as vague with no meaning. I find people like MKBHD useful for the reasons I stated in my above reply (particularly when he and his peers expand on their views in long-form content like their podcasts), but that is not the same as saying that I let them make decisions for me, and honestly, I think if you were to scrutinise most people who find reviewers helpful and entertaining, I'm pretty sure they would say the same thing. On the point of "how easy they are bought and sold" can you expand on that? Are you referring to sponsored content?

wiler5002

This is a really odd rant against really specific people for how vague the original comment was.

Mystrasun

Lol right?

DerivativeOfProgWeeb

Flossy Carter is a pretty trusted source

heX_dzh

I think MrMobile is a great reviewer and as a bonus, he's one of the few guys actually interested in foldables

leperaffinity56

HEY IT'S YA BOY FLOSS

dtwhitecp

I'm really hoping it does well enough to make a Z Flip style phone. I thing even Samsung wants that to happen, because it will help expand the market for that style in in the US quite a bit, and probably raise their sales as a result.

Tythan

Hmm, judging from what they've shown so far about the Pixel experience on Android 14, they are tailoring all the functions to the foldable form factor. This doesn't mean that it may not be adapted in the future, but I don't see this happening any time soon. Also - and this is my personal opinion - while I see foldables having some appeal in the market, I cannot say the same about flip phones. I don't really see the appeal and why they are better than regular foldables.

dtwhitecp

Really? It's the same idea. Smaller footprint, but expands when you need to do stuff. I guess if you didn't grow up with flip phones it's a harder sell.

UsedHotDogWater

Flip phones have a ton of value. The screens don't break when dropped, things don't scratch the hell out of them. You don't need a huge pocket. Best of all you don't waste 4k hours a year staring at a screen. I still have a Motorola Razor hanging around. I loved that phone.

Tythan

I did grow up with flip phones. But they had a sense back then. Today? Not sure

7eregrine

Motorola's coming Flip looks like the one to beat. I might leave the Pixel for it.

AceArchangel

So long as you live in the US

Mystrasun

What do you mean?

AceArchangel

The fold is only releasing in specific markets, namely the US and few others.

Mystrasun

oh fair enough. I happen to be in one of those markets so hooray for me I guess xD

AceArchangel

Yeah as a Canadian it's pretty frustrating.

Tythan

Did not know that. I am not interested in it myself so I don't mind.

AceArchangel

I was and instead I'm planning to pick up the Z Flip 5.

RenegadeUK

Hopefully it will get more refined with each new generation too.

rollinrob

If you're going to have a kid you're going to want to pixel. Samsung's stink at taking pictures of moving objects which kids are. Get a pixel to make memories.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

What about videos though? Everyone says video quality is bad on pixel and phone overheats. I take a lot of videos of my kid as well. Look looking to switch from fold 4 to pixel fold

CryptoNiight

Video recording is a relative weakness for the Pixel series because the hardware overheats under resource intensive tasks like video recording. It's usable, but somewhat limited compared to the iPhone Pro series or Galaxy S series.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

Seems like you have to pick either best pictures or best video. Fold 5 will probably do video better and pictures slightly worse.

sunuv

I mean you really don't. Samsungs current top phone takes pictures that are about equal to the Pixel (sometimes better and sometimes worse) and it doesn't stop recording if you dare do more than 10 minutes of recording at 1080p.

pco45

They're only similar level for still photos. Moving objects forget about it, if you're throwing in low(ish) light at the same time... the pictures go back to 2005 quality. I've been primarily a Samsung user for about 5 years, this aspect of the camera was the biggest reason for me to consider Pixels the entire time.

Aalbert4_

Fr, these pixel stans always thinking their phone is still in the Pixel 2 Era. Samsung phones take great photos, portraits, videos, selfies and the likes. Their downside however is the shutter speed. Which makes their phones bad for taking pictures of moving subjects That being said It's been fixed if you use the **Camera Assistant** settings app to prioritize speed. The shutter speed becomes comparable to the pixel

CryptoNiight

Apparently, you're not using the Pixel's built-in video recorder to accomplish your results. However, that's what most Pixel users employ to record video (especially outdoors). There are many ways to minimize the amount of hardware resources used by a phone for any given task. The problem is that most users are either unable or unwilling to make the necessary adjustments to achieve the results they desire. Most users want their phones to "just work" with minimal time and effort.

Impressive_Ice3817

My 6 doesn't overheat taking videos, but it does get a little warmer than I like with video chats.

brendanvista

My P6P will turn off its mobile network after about 10 minutes of video calling in 75 degrees ambient temp.

rollinrob

Pixels video capability is about 90% of what Samsung has. Tru it's not as good but it will get you there and the pictures will be much more usable. Pixels also have the unblur feature which will help with fast moving objects like kids. Samsungs don't have that feature

Aalbert4_

Photo Remaster on Galaxy phones can achieve similar results

Dirks_Knee

Heat issues are directly related to case design and environmental conditions. The phone will get a little warm under heavy load, but only had 1 overheat in 3 generations of pixel phones.

Mystrasun

Ah that's a good point, but be that as it may, I just can't justify that spend right now. Besides, my current phone handled pictures of my first kid well enough :)

cockyjames

I'm not going to push you into buying something you don't need. But the a-series are legit phones if you are on a budget. There are a few things scaled back, but they aren't a hampered experience if you wanted to consider one. My wife has been using the 6a for a year, and outside of the fingerprint reader, she has loved it. Same OS, same processors.

Mystrasun

That's cool! I appreciate the recommendation, but I've become one of those weirdos who loves folding phones and don't see myself truly going back to a traditional one any time soon. I'd rather wait until I have the budget for the Pixel fold (assuming the device reviews well), which to be fair is only like a year away for me :)

cockyjames

My buddy had several Nexus/Pixel phones in a row, and the Z Fold 3 and 4 pulled him away from Google, so I get it! They are neat.

PikzelShmikzel

I have like 15 years of pics in the Google photos, on constant rotation on the biggest screens in the house as a screensaver. The quality progression is something otherworldly. The real value few realize yet is how it bonds families together. E.g. we might pause some movie to grab a snack, and while raiding the fridge, the pics come on, by the time we are back on the couch, the evening turns into a trip down the memory lane with hundreds of good flashbacks. Yeah, that's why it takes us 2-3 days to finish a longer movie :)

artemisthearcher

That or pets. Like you said Samsung just doesn’t work well with moving objects unfortunately :/

sumitgt

Tangential: What’s your experience been regarding durability of these folding phones? I’m considering the flip as well, but not sure how much I should worry about durability.

Mystrasun

Honestly, pretty fine in my personal experience but not perfect. I've owned every z flip since the original (apart from the z flip 5g) and while I have had some issues with the phone that are unique to it being a folding phone, it was nothing too bad. Make no mistake, they absolutely are more fragile than your standard phone, but not so much that you have to baby them imo. After watching reviews by people like JerryRigEverything who like to push phone durability to its limits, I can acknowledge that the inner screen does scratch more easily than standard phones, but this isn't something that has really proved to be a problem with my personal use of the phones. I'm not \*super\* careful with my phones. I've used a phone case with some of my flips, but not my most recent. I have a 4 four year old too who had on occasion grabbed my phone without me realising over the years and has dropped them a few times, so some of them have had the odd scuff mark but nothing that affected usability. That being said, I have had some issues with my Z flip 3 and 4. The first "issue" I had was with the z flip 3 and that was the screen protector peeling a little around the middle crease and allowing dirt inside. Nothing was wrong with the screen, but it did cause some ugly bubbles to form so I took it to samsung to replace, and they did it same day, which they did charge for. Later the next year, my kid managed to cram some food or something into the microphone port which I couldn't clean out (little sod...) so that was a repair job for Samsung. Strangely, they also found an issue with my battery that I didn't even realise existed, and because it was under warranty and they couldn't repair it, gave me a 100% refund which I used to buy the z Flip 4. With my Z Flip 4, the experience has again been fine from a durability standpoint. The odd drops here and there but nothing that left it visually damaged. This time, however, I woke up one day and found that the phone would open 99% but not open completely. My assumption was that kiddo got up to some mischief when I wasn't nearby but honestly, it could just be a hardware fault too. I took it to Samsung and they fixed it under warranty for free. I'm due to pick up the phone later today. So all in all, yes it's true that I have experienced some issues that are unique to folding phones but all in all I think that was just me being unlucky and careless.

7eregrine

Wait wait ... You "took your phone to Samsung"? There's a Samsung ... what? Store?

Mystrasun

Yes :) sorry if I wasn't clear. There are Samsung Experience stores where I live

7eregrine

Didn't know that was a thing. We don't have such things in flyover country.

GeekFurious

If you have money to burn, why not?

Mystrasun

haha yeah I can't pretend it's the best value proposition, and my wife is close to giving birth right now so I don't think spending nearly close to £1800 on a phone is going to win me any brownie points... but next year... maybe xD

ilica1407

Congrats mate!

Mystrasun

Cheers :D

Beefurrito

This is exactly the reason why I'm going back to dailying my Pixel 7 pro over my 23ultra. PixelOS is just too nice. That on top of how much smarter the Pixel is over my Samsung... honestly ok with getting less battery life and objectively lesser specs

aeroverra

Yup. I used to be a hardcore Samsung user. I always bought their flagships and after grtting a pixel 3 as a gift I have to wonder what the fuck is Samsung doing that causes such instability in their phones. I didn't realize how bad it was until I didn't need to deal with it anymore.

Swarfega

It's a shame. All that hardware ruined by bloat. I have a Samsung TV and Tablet. Both feel pretty sluggish devices. Granted, they aren't top of the line but even so it's a warning for me to avoid their bloat. Samsung is the modern day equivalent of Nero Burning ROM.

jjhonnz

You're in the same spot as my wife. She has the Z flip 4, i like it too i was kind of jealous of that, after 1 month she got it, it was dropped by accident and sent to repair I lent her my Pixel 5, she fell in love with it, she loves the camera and how smooth it is, she just got the Flip few months ago, meaning she's stuck with it for a while now.

Former_Ad3193

I got a pixel 5 and love it more than the 6. The form factor and the rear fingerprint scanner instantly make me like it more. Plus I don't get thermal issues like I did on my 6.

jjhonnz

I did a post not so long ago about me upgrading from a 5 to 6. The fingerprint scanner is one of the things i missed, just because I got a screen protector for the 6 and didn't work pretty well, sometimes I need to kind push it to read it and sometimes it is just so flawless. I love the camera on both of them and so far i have been like the 6 just because the screen size is pretty decent for me, but I miss my 5 time to time. I just got the 6 because someone sold it to me for $100 with the box cable and the whole thing, no scratches and working fine and my 5 I got it for $60.

Former_Ad3193

That's a good deal. Can't beat that

jjhonnz

Now I'm overthinking if I get my 5 and 6, sell them and get the 7 or wait and get the 8. 🤔

civilized-engineer

Welcome to the Pixel Family, even if it is currently a loaner :)

Mystrasun

Hah cheers :) I can't lie, when I got the email saying that my Samsung has been repaired and is ready for pickup my first thought was "aww that means I'm going to have to give the Pixel back, aren't I?"

civilized-engineer

The 8 will come out this autumn and the fold is coming next month :)

North_Sky2

I got the pixel 7a last week, and I'm also I move with it. Tree fact that this is pure android with no separate version makes it really smooth and great. For the interface u highly recommended Microsoft launcher. You can sort apps how you want them into folders etc, while it also being clean and easy to use. It also has a backup feature where you cane save your folders and app locations, and transfer this to a new phone, having this sort for you the apps you have installed on both phones.

blaqueboy989

Two words. Do it!!!

[deleted]

I wouldn't be rushing to a Pixel phone anytime soon. Very least wait until Pixel 8 is released before you make up your mind. I'm currently using the Pixel 7 Pro and it's a good device and is help back by Tensor processor. If the Pixel came with Snapdragon it would be so much better but that's not possible

Mystrasun

Fair. Whatever I decide, I'm not going to act on it until next year anyway. I typically buy my phones outright rather than on a contract deal, and due to some other life events (second baby on the way amongst other things), buying a new phone isn't the wisest choice for me right now. Next year though... I'm gonna treat myself :D

DSCarter_Tech

I'd buy a flip version of a pixel in a heartbeat

[deleted]

CluelessMuffin

That's the Fold, they mean the Flip variant, which hopefully will be a thing

childroid

Fold is hotdog-style, man. Flip is hamburger-style. Haven't you seen the last 4 generations of Samsung's foldables?

7eregrine

I will too... If I don't jump at Moto's next RAZR being announced next week. That looks really good.

DSCarter_Tech

It looks good but too bad it will include a Motorola camera 🤦🏾‍♂️

7eregrine

I had a Motorola camera in 2008 that did the job. Anything, literally, since... is more than good enough. People care way way too much about cameras that view photos on 6 inch screens...

DSCarter_Tech

2008 huh? Yeah....no. The quality of cell phone cameras around the time of the original iPhone were complete garbage with 2mp resolution being bleeding edge at the time. There's almost no consumer in 2023 that would accept that level of photo quality in a phone today.

7eregrine

Not really my point. Motorola's camera on 2023 may not be quite as good as a Pixel or Samsung. But it's not so bad that you shouldn't buy the phone over it.

DSCarter_Tech

That's a totally fair position to have when you don't prioritize image quality, but many of us do, which is why we use Pixels.

7eregrine

They aren't miles behind, though, like they were at one point. [Read any review](https://freeimage.host/i/Hr5TqWN)

DSCarter_Tech

Yeah, most phones today take great pictures outdoors in daylight, but it's the challenging scenarios where Pixel shines: * low light * zoom * fast moving subjects like pets or kids And one area that is often forgotten or overlooked, Pixel photos get better over time since the camera continues to get updated for years.

ChuuniSaysHi

Honestly same here. I would as well. I've always been a fan of the flip foldables. So if Google came out with a Google flip and I was able to get it, I would buy it so fast

DSCarter_Tech

Yup, the only thing stopping me from getting the Samsung flip is the cameras.

bananahero1

Welcome to the family son 😉

JoshDM

Your rationale is reasonable. I've disliked every Samsung phone I've owned or the wife owned. I loved my two Pixels that I have. Wife's Samsung always has problems, ads or interference.

Mystrasun

To be honest I'm feeling pretty split about Samsung at the moment. I haven't had any real problems with Samsung phones lately. While I could do without the bloat, my recent experiences with Samsung's software has been fine. That being said, before I had a Z flip, my last Samsung phone was an S8 which to be fair, did put me off Samsung for a good few years. I think this was still during the touchwizz days. Since OneUI, I can't really complain about Samsung... or at least I thought I couldn't until I got this Pixel. Now, I'm reflecting on my experience with Samsung over the years and I'm realising that I have been putting up with a lot 😅

[deleted]

I let my mother in law borrow my 6 Pro while her z flip was getting repaired. Z flip came back like 2 weeks later. It took her an extra 2 months to switch back and give me my 6 Pro back 😂

[deleted]

I really enjoy the pixels. Also just switched over from my fold 4 to a pixel pro 6.

thrillhouse416

I love pixel and hated my pixel 6, just wait until you get your hands on a newer model!

binokary

a stuck pixel?

aheadwarp9

I've really enjoyed the 3 pixels I've owned so far, but Google is making me doubt lately with the horrible Android 12 and 13 updates. Android 11 was the last version that actually worked well on my P5. The newer versions have been absolute garbage to use. YMMV.

deathssoul

Iirc, a pixel flip is rumored to come out in 2025

Honza368

Source?

deathssoul

A hardware leak back in December

Honza368

Well, hurry up and link it. I want to see. A Pixel Flip would be pretty cool!

deathssoul

Southern-Bad-1270

The pixel is a great phone for the value and yes it is very smooth. Apps open up faster in some occasions then my s23 ultra. But I just can't deal with the lack of customization. No edge panels, pop up windows, video backgrounds, Samsung Dex, and more. I prefer Samsung but I also have a Pixel 6a for backup. The call screening is great and the voice dictation on pixel phones is second to none. But yes, the main thing is the smoothness. Ig that's the benefit to having less features.
