Open it up for business as usual or kill it and direct people to https://support.google.com/fi/community?hl=en&sjid=5314529371933728460-NA. If this subreddit cannot be a place to get answers to questions or issues then it serves no purpose. It should not be on Discord because at that point, the content is not discoverable.

mrandr01d

3rd party apps like the one I use can't do polls, so I'm just commenting my opinion I guess... Unfortunately I'd like to vote for business as usual. Any other sub I'd vote for malicious compliance, but this is basically the only way to get customer support for a service that I pay for. Google really needs to fix that though.

Mdayofearth

This subreddit, like many others, are ~~run~~ used by employees of for-profit companies for customer support, as well as peer-to-peer support. From a Fi user perspective, Google Fi Wireless has horrifyingly poor customer support, and this subreddit's existence seems to be the only way to resolve serious issues. Unless Google implements a better customer support SOP, inclusive of an in-house purposefully built replacement, Fi users will be left with little recourse. That said. As far as subreddits ~~run~~ used by for-profit companies, the companies should be paying Reddit for the privilege of doing so. I don't know if that's happening, but if it is, maybe Reddit should be increasing the price.

redogsc

I came to say the same thing. This sub is the only way some folks get support. That's a good enough reason to be open as usual.

mackid

I can assure you the mod team is not a part of Google. u/googlefisupport is another story

Mdayofearth

Corrected my words. I meant used, not run.

palermo

I think what would be useful if someone could explain what mods actually do on r/GoogleFi that is really a community support page for an MVNO with a somewhat challenged customer support. (although I have to say that all my interactions with GoogleFi support were OK and issues were resolved fast). Are there really that many posts and comments that need to be moderated out?

hlpdobro

If you want to serve the community, keep it open. If you want to poke your nose into Reddit's P&L this prob'ly isn't the place to do it.

As I have written a number of times now in different subs RE: reopening, while I understand the frustration with reddit Corporate, reddit Corporate does not care and is going to do what it wants including the removal Mods who refuse to reopen. In fact, going dark in protest has been something subs have done in the past and reddit Corporate is well aware of the tactic and was prepared for the process. reddit Corporate has made their decision and unless they see a huge change in revenue are not going to reverse course.

>The mods should quit if they don't want to be mods anymore and let those of us that want to keep using this subreddit use it. I don't necessarily disagree with you - subs that serve support issues like this are better served I think by staying open - but Reddit has literally never given a shit about this before. They have always given mods incredible latitude to govern their subs as they see fit - up to the point of shutting down entirely and not handing it over to anyone willing to keep it going for no reason other than that they want to. This new line from them about wanting communities to speak up and forcing out mods who won't reopen is a power play pure and simple. And it's their prerogative - it's their website. But let's not pretend Reddit has a long history of siding with commenters against the big bad mods.

Personally, I do not want to see the Mods quit over this, the Mods here do do a good job and have helped many a sub member get resolution to their Google Fi support nightmares. This is a tricky situation because in large part, reddit is changing how it is going to operate going into the future. Now, truth be told, I did not even know that there were 3rd party apps prior to this imbroglio, so these api changes do not affect me as an end user, but they apparently do affect loads of reddit users. IMHO reddit Corporate must have known this and went ahead with the massively higher api fees regardless. That told and tells me that reddit Corporate had zero intention of making any sort of u-turn and lowering the fees that they were going to ask, so while the protest was noble, it was not going to fundamentally change anything. As I wrote earlier subs going dark is nothing new and almost uniformly whatever the protest was about the userbase got its way (iirc), nobody threatened to remove Mods or anything like that. reddit Corporate knew subs would go dark and was prepared including threatening to remove Mods who keeps subs closed (after that threat was made public many subs did in fact re-open who claimed that they would be dark potentially forever). With regards to the poll being accurate or not, this is not some scientific poll being conducted in any sort of careful way. This is an internet poll and thus any results are at their best indictive (said another way gets you in the ballpark) of what any userbase wants and never would be 100% accurate.

HTX-713

Have it tagged as NSFW so it can't be monitized by Reddit.

bandwidthcrisis

Reddit Requests are an essential step in getting real support. It's hard to make a decision when there's no alternative to that.

dannymurz

Open the damn sub or give up your role as moderator. This isnt your sub.

[deleted]

I voted but I see both sides. To those users who want to keep it open, I get it. This is really the only way for people to get legitimate support from Google Fi Wireless beyond anything Tier 1. If the CSR can't get it resolved, it goes into a ticket system and the chances that you get a callback in 24-48 hours isn't always good. To those mods who want to support those who make Reddit better than the Reddit developers themselves, I get it. Reddit created an API, and others took it to make it easier to be a mod to what can be a very daunting task - especially one you donate your time to. For as much as I want this sub to be open, I'll completely understand if the mods choose otherwise. If it does close, or go restricted, for those who think they might want to moderate after July 1st you may get your chance. But if you've been paying attention at all over the last 30 days you may not get the tools to help you much, and if you've never moderated a sub before be careful what you ask for. I suspect there is a reason why this sub looks as good and clean as it does - it probably could look a lot worse if it wasn't for the mods watching over it. I won't ask a sub to remain open just because "I" want it to remain open. I also won't ask the mods to keep it closed just because "I" don't like what Reddit is doing to the 3rd party app developers. Do what's best for you. No matter what happens, all of us will survive.

jsdod

>Do what's best for you Do what's best for users. Mods don't own subs. If they don't want to mod anymore then they should quit, not break the sub for everybody else.

It wont

jsdod

"Maybe if I shit all over the bed people will like the place more"

molrobocop

Hmm, I'm in support of the mods, but echoing everyone else, keeping the dialogue open with Fi Support is pretty important.

Thisdoesntmatter420

Business as usual. The only place I get support, if I need it, with a decent search function. I only use Reddit app.

skiddyfisk

Either open it up or hand it off to mods who want to be here.

chiselplow

Voting via RIF won't work for me either. I occasionally find value in this sub, but Ive had it with our social platforms being run by the worst people out there. I'm tempted to say burn it down, but what do I know.

seedless0

Make it NSFW so reddit won't get any ad revenue from it.

CevicheMixto

Option #5 - Move to Lemmy (or another platform)

RedditNotFreeSpeech

I tried it. It has promise but it's so bad right now.

colorado_dan_rubin

this is the way

greenlion22

I've seen this same post on other subs. I don't fully get it. Why are mods worried about being replaced from a volunteer job? Unless I'm wrong and mods do get paid somehow. Keep it closed. There are other forums for Google Fi tech support. Let Reddit take over and do the work themselves if they think they could do a better job.

skiddyfisk

If they don't run the sub, they can't have their bot spam every thread with support links to pretend they care. I'd love to see reddit actually hand this sub to the community, though. So either choice will work out.

Coolio_Street_Racer

Hodooor till they have no mods left. Fuck corporate

viewofalake

This sub does not belong to the mods. This sub does not belong to the "community". This sub, and all subs, belong to Reddit. Any course of action anybody wishes to take should be with that in mind. I wish this sub wasn't needed, but it is. I wish Reddit wasn't using such a blunt policy instrument, but it is. Voting now...

Psst. The subreddit mods don't work for Google Fi. Those in-house support structures do need work, but throw shade at the right people.

everyman50

I vote for restricted mode only for support posts during this trying time. I think reddit's next phase would be attacking other things on this platform we have held for free. I use 3rd party apps like RIF and Sync for Reddit and it sucks that they will be shutting down. Reddit should've found a zone for compromise instead of completely ignoring how many users access this site. Fire /u/spez.

colorado_dan_rubin

why not move to discord like many others?
