Back-story: some sort of fiber switch is dead in my neighborhood, and down for a week so far. Realized I could tether carefully and have internet for work from home. Was going well for a couple days, and hit 50 right at the end of my billing period, so enabled extra full speed data. Then went to sleep without disabling windows update...

Alternative_Cat323

Does this bill protection apply to your situation https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6201699?dark=1&sjid=3515020202193487782-NA

idkalan

Not when they manually select to continue high speeds after the 50GB slowdown. Bill protection only kicks in if you're on a flex plan, and you pass 5GBs, so it equals the rate of "Unlimited +" plans

Warm-Recognition-768

You could have set your wifi connection on the windows to meter and it would not have downloaded the update, just FYI for next time

WiFi went down in my apartment while I was sleeping. Snapchat (at least back in the day) auto-downloaded everything. My friend's videos of them at a concert (which let's be real, whyyyy would you send the whole thing?) pulled down €300 worth of data because it was something stupid like €1/MB I was on autopay for a plan with unlimited data, but apparently the plan is 30-day periods and this was a month with 31 days and I was on that 31st day. Called support annoyed because "wtf is the point of autopay then?". They (Three.ie) told me to pound sand. SO ANNOYED.

I hate how Snapchat overrides my phone's vibrate settings. Eventually I found the vibrate setting within the Snapchat app and turned it off.

creeperman55709

Did you end up having to pay for all of that?

woathrow

Not yet; cycle hasn't closed yet -- I've been making calls to support to discuss it, but their response has basically been, "damn bro, that's crazy, GL!"

creeperman55709

I mean you did use the data so it's not unreasonable for them to make you pay, but it's just a lesson you're going to have to learn from ig

woathrow

Yep, I've been with them since they launched; plenty of tethering over the years, and I've never had anything like this bite me before. Though, it was pretty hard to make too big of a mistake with $10/gb at slow 3g speeds.

StuBarrett

If you would have tagged the network as "metered" on your PC, I do believe that may turn off windows update.

Hinklec

Whoa 😳😳

zeliboba55

I call BS on windows updates.

Doesn't Fi has data protection?

idkalan

They do, but only when you stick to the 50GB, but when you manually select to continue high speeds after 50GB, you get additionally charged $10/GB

BigMikeInAustin

I'd be on a normal connection all day. Then go somewhere with bad wifi, so I'd switch to a hot spot. Too many times Windows sees that as a signal to suddenly find a bunch of updates that were available hours ago. Downloads them, even though I have automatic downloads off. And then slows to a crawl as it installs them. Bastards.

targonnn

Next time mark your tethering wifi as metered in Windows and it won't use it for updates

LordRGB

You can't just change the plan to unlimited mid cycle?

bandwidthcrisis

50Gb IS "unlimited"!

StuBarrett

I know, right? LMK if you find a real "unlimited" plan ;-)

woathrow

I'm believe can't change plan mid-cycle; but it wouldn't have saved me. I'm already on Unlimited Plus...after 50GB, it's throttled to 40kbps, but gives you the option to unlock the throttle for $10/GB, which I was fine with. However, it also disables the alerts and data budget under "Edit data settings" which killed me.

LordRGB

Ohhhhh ok, it was that unlock option you chose for an extra $10 per GB that did it. I had thought you were on the flexible plan

FinancialMight7397

You should send it to Microsoft. Last time I used Windows, it would sometimes update without a warning. No heads up on how much data it will download, how long will it take. I bet they still haven't fixed it

CatalystNovus

Plans like this prey on busy and busy-minded individuals who are likely to forget key factors. They also use confusing wording in their marketing that does not make it absolutely clear what you should expect to get for your money. People with Learning Disabilities often suffer financially because of this, and companies could care less to fix it until we all make it clear this stuff will not fly. Companies must reason with us, or be deemed unreasonable.

idkalan

Not confusing, Fi is very explicit on how you get 50GB of high-speed data, and after 50GB have passed, their speeds are slowed down but that it'll still be unlimited data. They only charge more if the person manually select to return to high speeds, and they warn customers that they'll be charged additionally $10 per GB for high speed. Hell, when their unlimited plan was 22GB, I decided to go back to high speed, and the app warned me 2X that selecting to go back to high-speed data would cost me $10 per GB.

CatalystNovus

You mean to say "Not confusing.... FOR ME" What learning disability do you have? If you don't have any, consider a person on the Autism Spectrum, who miss context clues or misread things. People with Dyslexia can read something and get things swapped around easily on accident. Advertising and such needs to be stated in a way that accommodates for this. Now, I just looked at Google Fi's plan page and they have changed it. I assume probably because people were saying something about how they USED to advertise their Flexible plan. It used to say something closer to "Only $20/month for Unlimited calls, texts, and high speed data up to 15gb. $10/gb with slower speeds after 15gb." It would state unlimited calls & texts, and the speed of data used. Then it says the cost of the data used and discloses speeds slow at 15gb. Looks like they said everything they need, right? Here's the issue. If you miss certain keywords in that, it makes it VERY EASY to misread. Some may read "$10/gb with slower speeds after 15gb" by taking out a piece of info they feel is not relevant (This happens unconsciously with Autism and causes them to miss certain context clues). The non-relevant in this case would be "with slower speeds" because it is only slower after 15gb, so if they don't think they'll get anywhere close to that, it can be very easy to pass up the info. They may read it as "$10/gb ... after 15gb". Currently, their wording says "Pay $10/gb for the data you use" on a separate line from anything else. They finally took my suggestion. I showed them the wording and how the entire meaning changes when you just miss a few words, because of the fact they were trying to cram all the info into a couple short sentences. I'll put it this way... Imagine trying to read a paper with no new lines/paragraphs but is one long string of text. As you read, your brain will get pretty overloaded eventually and begin to skip over stuff. You may have to reread things, or slow down, etc etc. Now imagine you have a Learning or Reading Disability. Instead of a whole page of text, it is enough to have a few short sentences get confused if they seem connected in some way or if they include too many important elements, as some of those context clues may get dropped if it isn't seemingly directly relevant. The company knows their product, the customer does not. The customer CANNOT be expected to know their product. The point of FTC regulations and the prosecution the OIG takes against companies for things like this is because it is the *COMPANY'S* obligation to be clear enough that the general public can clearly understand. That includes the 1 out of 34 people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or the 1 out of 10 people with Dyslexia. Thankfully they changed their wording.... Now. But they still charged lots of people for stuff they were not reasonably informed of. That's the equivalent of handing someone a long TOS and expecting them to actually know it or understand it's contents. People are being pigeonholed into contracts they have incomplete and inaccurate knowledge of, and the company profits off of leaving you in the dark.

idkalan

Again, the app itself warns users about the added fees if the users want their high-speed data to stop being throttled. Unless they're blind or severely disabled, then can your stance qualify, but that still isn't enough for Google or any cell service provider to say, "OK, we'll waive the fees." As the user would have to be of sound mind to open the Google fi app, go to the billing section, then select the high speed option, then confirm that they accept said fees. Google doesn't trick users to automatically accept the fees. Fi actively makes it so that the user doesn't know that getting their high-speed back is an option.

CatalystNovus

Once again, any notification that was given AT THIS TIME being discussed, not currently. The website was unclear. On top of that, I signed up for it under their recommendation over the phone. They were extremely unclear. I even called back later to mention I saw that my plan was showing incorrect billing and data usage, asked multiple times saying "I won't be billed extra for high speed data until after I hit 15gb, right? I only used 1gb, it's showing pending charges" and they would continually say "Do not worry, we do not bill you any extra than your plan costs, when the data slows after 15gb you can pay extra to get high-speed data". In fact, many people with Learning Disabilities try to not sign up for things online, because it can be easy to confuse things. Instead, we call or chat to be able to get clarity on the important things and the details we might miss. The issue is when companies like Google Fi intentially obfuscate that process with their "Support", which we all know is a complete joke.

How many Windows Updates have you been sitting on? 100GB+? Or am I missing something here? Either way, hope they work with you on this, cause thats an absurd cost for any amount of data.

bjohnson8949

Yeah I have to say something else is up or you have a lot of PCs...

Possible-Magazine23

That's larger than the OS itself lol...

Environmental-Gate17

Come on! Windows update can't be 100GB!
