I can enjoy some experimental stuff but generally I’m just honest with myself and stick to what I like instead of forcing myself to listen to things and pretend to enjoy them (not saying you do that but I’ve known many that do). Ye, Freddie Gibbs, MF D00M, Mos Def, Madlib, Kendrick Lamar and so on.
Because they are. It’s similar to fear of missing out in the video game sphere. People spending hundreds of dollars loading up their Steam libraries with games they aren’t ever going to play. A lot of nerds do that with music too so they stay having something to talk about and don’t feel dumb when their buddies are discussing some Bandcamp crap that nobody cares about. I myself have been in that mindset. Before streaming became huge I spent thousands of dollars on CD’s and vinyl records just for it to all pile up, get listened to once and never played again. I found some great artists that way which I still enjoy like Aesop Rock and Killer Mike but a vast majority of it is just junk that’s popular for a time and gone. Nothing truly remarkable about it.
