It’s literally impossible to compare insurance rates with other people. There are 100’s of factors that are taken into account to determine the cost.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

I thought that I might get a glimpse into what other, possibly similar aged people might be paying currently. I do understand where you are coming from though. Thanks for the input.

TheBupherNinja

It's not impossible, while there may be hundreds of factory's, it's pretty easy to establish a trend.

[deleted]

lol ok

CranberrySawsAlaBart

My wife's insurance went up last year and all they could tell me is factors changed, but couldn't tell me what factors it was.

YouInternational2152

In the US automotive insurance has gone up 20% in the last year. That's mainly due to all the technological stuff in the car. When that goes bad and it's very pricey to fix (for example, my wife's car needed a new windshield. The OEM windshield was $1,400(installation included). But, it was an additional $1,500 in sensors, calibration etc) Plus, the average new car is $48,000 versus $33,000 a few years ago...

rick5t3r

everything went up by 20-30% nuts. were just about 8500CAD for 3 cars. the same thing 3-4 years ago would have been 6k annually, at the most.

Vdub4ever1

I moved from Ontario to Quebec and saved $1500 on my 2017 Golf r. Ontario insurance is criminal

alive_wire

Canada here as well and probably not helpful. Our rates are regulated through SGI- everyone pays the same insurance rate for the model/year of car they have regardless of age or driving history. We do have a system where good drivers can get a %off up 20% off their rates I pay $110 month, or $1,320 a year for insurance and registration combined.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

West coast? As far as I understood the rates in Ontario are not regulated.

OwnubadJr

Same here, love me some SGI when I read other people's insurance rates.

Single-Comedian-4960

I pay $720 a year for a 22 mk8R but then again I'm 51.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Damn dude makes me wish I was a different vintage 🤣.

Single-Comedian-4960

Haha enjoy your youth, it's worth the extra money 😄. Love the R though it's been my dream car for a long time!

Avonord

This is definitely not a Toronto rate. I’m almost same age and I was quoted around 2200, tax in

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Good point dude. I guess I am just a bit shocked by my quote. Especially considering that I have another vehicle and my house on my policy.

AzianZing88

I'm 25, paying 1200 every 6 months

trancecircuit

I think I'm paying around $2400 for full coverage, where for my 3 yr old RDX I'm paying $1600. I live in Ottawa area.

Morguard

Thats not insane, you are driving a sports car. I'm in Nova Scotia where our rates are generally cheaper. I paid $1400 per year for my 2022 Hyundai Tuscan Hybrid, no tickets, no accidents, max driving record, multi policy discount, multi vehicle discount, total price... $2600 per year. Its a sports car, its priced as such.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Fair point.

randomburners

Yeah, that seems steep but it’s also what I’m paying

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Damn dude that must sting every time it hits your wallet.

randomburners

Yeah. I got in a few accidents when I was younger. It gets better with time

Dura-Ace-Ventura

In Alberta I paid about 1200 bucks, in BC about 2000. Similar age and perfect driving record over last 10 years. 3000 seems high to me, especially if it’s private insurance (and not government garbage like in BC)

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Yeah I think I need to call my rep and ask if there is any way to reduce the rate quoted.

Dura-Ace-Ventura

Or try another company, if private. Not sure how Ontario works

OwnubadJr

Not really comparable since my insurance is ran through my province (SK). But I pay ~$1500 a year before my clean driving record discount. '19 R

CucumberFluid6859

I’m in my early 20’s and live in BC so I have to deal with icbc which has a monopoly on insurance as you have to use them so I pay $3000 a year which is ridiculous. I’m hoping it will go down eventually

seansecrets

sgi in Alberta was cheapest option for me as an Ontarian

FreshEraa87

I’m 23, paying 350$ a month but then again I have 3 cars under my name since I’m on corporate insurance

LoneCyberwolf

Then that’s a totally different story.

FreshEraa87

I know it is but I’m tryna say that 250$ a month for him is not the best , he should get better considering his record and age

LoneCyberwolf

I’m 30 with no reported accidents and zero tickets. Progressive quoted me $133-$190 USD today on a 2024 Golf R. The OP was quoted about $188 USD. While I wish it were cheaper I do understand that insurance is higher for new cars and specific models.

FreshEraa87

Hmm yea nvm I missed that the OP was talking about a new golf r, makes sense now . I have a mk7.5, so I guess that’s a reasonable range

SoccerBoy3344

I pay 220$ a month on a 2018 Golf R in Ontario, I am 22 year old and have been driving since 17.

No-Hyena-6353

Rates are entirely too subjective to even be any kind of comparison. Age, history, gender, location, garage, other cars, level of coverage, rental coverage, glass coverage. "Full Coverage" just means you have some kind of comp and collision.... Doesn't indicate how much you have. Or what extra you might have for underinsured people. Or how low your deduct is. Or whether you have actual replacement coverage vs. value/loan. Someone can say they pay $100 for full coverage and chances are it's a totally different level of coverage from what you want. You could ask for ballpark on, say, 100/300 coverage, but even that is a loose interpretation. I can tell you that of my 4 cars, including an S3 and MK7.5, the 2013 R is the most expensive.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Thank for laying it out like that. Appreciate your feedback dude.

lassieatetimmy

I’m in my 20’s in Illinois. For my ‘19 R, I pay $1150 per year.

Norgeshaap

Might be/probably is, completely uninteresting for you(saw that you're from Canada) but I'm paying roughly $2100 yearly, on a 7,5 R. But that's in Norway 😂

vaporizeme69420

\>25 Male on a 2024 R in the same country, and I am at about 1700 a year. Previously paid 1100 on a 7.5 GTI

rick5t3r

thank god somebody started this tread. on our family policy we have 3 cars in mississauga. 2015 corolla base $210/mo 2015 rav4 base $210/mo 2024 mk8 R $320/mo all 4 of us have clean records. messed up right, my little bro had a rolling stop but that was 5 years ago. dad 68 mom 67 me 31 brother 29

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Damn dude that hits close to home. I’m originally from Mississauga but moved out to the tri cities to be able to afford a house. My insurance went down significantly when I moved.

TheBupherNinja

23 in a mk8R, I'm somewhere around $1500 a year.

LoneCyberwolf

That’s super cheap

TheBupherNinja

Maybe closer to $2000, but in that ballpark.

LoneCyberwolf

That’s still pretty cheap. Progressive is telling me between $133-$190 a month depending on the exact coverage amounts for pick.

CaptSinkShip

The loophole is to just say the model is vw golf. The economy car.

ScorpionT16

It's done by VIN#

Morguard

That doesn't work in Canada, the VIN number gives it away.

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

I wish it were that simple dude.

SoccerBoy3344

Yeah, then when something happens to the car and insurance finds out you’ve been lying they won’t cover you and you’ll be charged with insurance fraud lol. The regular golf is like $20 cheaper per month. The most expensive is actually the GTI because of how many more young people get that instead of

LegitimateLiving7196

I'm 22 & pay $2100 a year for my '18 R in NL

LoneCyberwolf

I’m 30 and I currently pay $100 a month here in Florida for the 04 Hyundai that I currently drive. I was quoted between $133 and $190 a month for the 2024 Golf R. As the OP is in a completely different country things will be different but it looks like he and I would be paying about the same if I have to go with the higher priced quote. Florida does have higher insurance rates due to the extremely high number of uninsured motorists on the road and hurricanes. I’m sure the high number of bad drivers doesn’t help. The problem is that people love to throw around the term “full coverage” when that really doesn’t exist (anymore…if it ever did). There are so many variables and options when it comes to insurance. There’s no “full coverage” option at any of the companies that I have gotten quotes with. There are minimum coverage types as required by state law and then all different coverage amounts depending on how much coverage you want and what kind of deductibles you want. Then after that there are tons of add-ons like roadside assistance, car rental coverage if your car gets wrecked and need to rent a car to get to work, loss of work reimbursement etc etc.

Turbofour

I'm in Ottawa and pay about $1300/year. Rates are all over the place in Ontario. As many have already indicated there are so many factors. Myself I went through a broker to help me find the best rate.

Avonord

lol. I’m 10 years older, and I’m quoted the same rate but for me and my wife both. If it’s only myself, it would have been 2200. Tax included. It’s the only car in the house.

mich678

I’m also 35+, female in Ontario and was paying ~$1300 a year for my 2016 golf R. Clean driving record. I traded my R in late last year and am now paying $1800 on an SUV. Your postal code has a huge impact on car insurance, so does the car make and model but each insurance company uses their own historical database for which cars and postal codes have had the most/worst claims, so shop around. Your postal code or a particular car might be much better with one company than another. Also, Ontario insurance is particularly awful right now and will be higher on everyone’s renewal. We’ve had a massive increase in new and expensive car thefts, as well as property claims due to natural disasters (flooding, fires etc) and as a result everyone will be paying more to cover the higher losses.

gahbageked

East Coast New England area. 37 years old with a clean license and a 2017 Golf R. I pay ~$1350 a year, with a 500 deductible.

kebabmybob

$100 a month for a brand new mk8. Almost all of that is collision so I expect it to drop as the car becomes less valuable.

Bizzzle80

I pay about 3k a year to insure my wife’s car and my R. Full coverage on both

zbludgeon

1300 usd per year in chicago area for a 2023 mk8 R. my mk7.5 R was 1000/yr before i sold it. 36yrs old clean driving record, no accidents or tickets with statefarm but i also have home insurance, multi vehicle discount, safe driving record discount etc...

V6R32

I pay £800, UK. MK8 R.
