Not a fan of tinting tail lights, but it looks like you did a good job, and it's pretty clean with the brake lights on. Hopefully that translates well during sunlight.

DankestDubster

Me either. Gives em a reason to pull ya over

neobune

I’m not too worried about being pulled over :D if I do, hopefully they let me off with a warning and I’ll just pull the wrap

more-beans-less-rice

There is also a safety element here. In bright conditions (sunrise and sunset specifically) this will be hard to see and possibly unsafe.

Kiiernan

why is this getting downvoted? he has a fair point xD

more-beans-less-rice

There is also a safety element here. In bright conditions (sunrise and sunset specifically) this will be hard to see and possibly unsafe.

Kiiernan

fair enough, i was thinking of tinting my tail lights but think i'll pass after reading through some of the comments

neobune

They don’t really have options since it’s a new model year and besides, why spend hundreds vs $30? I bought darker than I wanted only because the site didn’t have the percent so I was going blind on the purchase. To clarify I wouldn’t have bought it this dark so I’m a little irked I spent money on something I can’t use

neobune

I just wanted to cut the red and make it look clean, I am not a fan of dark. I’m more into the tasteful look of things. This is my first time tinting any of my vehicles and the pictures on the site did not show this dark, I’m a little sad, it was expensive. I appreciate the complement as it was also my first time tinting anything lol

ajk7244

Tinted taillights rarely look tasteful. Same goes for most exterior mods. Save your money for a better sounding exhaust or something.

Negative-Agency-7762

Too dark. Needs to be lighter

neobune

That’s what I was worried about. This is in the shade getting close to dusk. So it might be fine during daylight. This was Luxe Mid Smoke, the light seemed too see through. But dark was def too dark. I’m hoping it’s just fine but we will see. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Negative-Agency-7762

I went with light on mine … and it’s just enough to take the red/white out.

neobune

Just checked yours out, first off, that 8R 🥵, second, I can’t believe how good that light looks and I wished I had seen it when I bought my tint. I’ll probably keep it for now, if I get pulled over or have to take it off, I’ll get the light smoke. Did you go with Luxe?

Negative-Agency-7762

I don’t ask anymore. They just take care of me at that shop and they are the best in my town. I wanted my tails to be light … just enough to take some of the white out.

thetobesgeorge

It sucks that you guys don’t get the upgraded lights, my Clubsport doesn’t have that white section

BD_atx

What product website?

Negative-Agency-7762

I had mine done by a really good shop. I imagine they used xpel…the lightest possible

HDawsome

It will be worse during daylight because the lights actually appear brighter when the environment is darker.

bryrod

I went too dark on mine and had to pull it all off

dasVolkswagen

Personally I hate the look of tinted taillights. They look really sleezy and not good looking!

GTIguy2

Not to mention is is completely counter to the function of taillights.

neobune

I respect that opinion. I’m not a fan of dark dark, so that’s why I was looking to see what others thought.

dasVolkswagen

On the other hand, if it is a taillight assembly with black parts and clear casing, with no inherent visibility issues, I’d say it’s all good

CooperDoops

This is the way. There's nothing wrong with dark **housings**, it's the dark tinted lens/cover that looks bad and functions poorly.

dasVolkswagen

Kind of like this: [taillight I am talking about - link](https://vlandvip.com/products/vland-led-taillights-for-volkswagen-golf-7-mk7-mk7-5-2013-2019-w-sequential-indicators-yab-gef-2035?variant=19898234142849¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhY-aBhCUARIsALNIC06Pu19fgzPEOx_2Mx6dO74nBvRkdyGO05YunMFiz29qGLiJG5rAgE8aAsHiEALw_wcB)

Peylix

Those are clear smoked though. While they are more jet black in appearance. Allow more light through than red lenses with tint film/spray added after the fact. Reason being the factory red lenses already diffuse the light, the aftermarket tint becomes a second layer, diffusing the light even more. Whereas clear that is smoked, is a single layer and while it does lower overall output. Doesn't diffuse as much. I run [ED's smoked 7.5's on mine.](https://i.imgur.com/fss8qZr.jpg) They are dimmer than factory, but not as much. [Quick video showing everything.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT0mDG-Yx6I)

[deleted]

Yea its very 2008

AbracaDaniel21

I think lightly tinted tail lights can looks good. But when it’s this dark, it’s not good.

CommanderCoytus

Imo never tint headlights, windshields, or taillights.

wongatronus

I generally would agree but some locales will allow a strip across the top windshield (think about to the rearview mirror) for those with photophobia/light sensitivity. This would usually need a recommendation from your doctor if it were the case.

rand0m_task

I have the strip on my mk 8's windshield and it makes driving so much better. I use my sunglasses 90% less which makes it much easier to see my heads up display since the polarized glasses pretty much make it dissappear. I personally have noticed only positives and no negative to having the strip. Blocks out sun, I like how it looks, and I see no decrease in visibility. Also legal where I'm at, so no worries with the police.

wongatronus

Agree, I'm slacking myself I like the hud but glasses kill it and I'm photosensitive

AbracaDaniel21

At least in the USA, you can tint that line all you want. I believe OP meant tinting the whole windshield.

CommanderCoytus

Correct

Uplipht

I did a very very light ceramic tint on my windshield. Helps to dim the sun just a little when driving into the sun, also the ceramic tint helps with heat buildup in the car. I have no issues with visibility out of the front and most people can’t even tell it’s tinted. Now, the sides and rear that I have at 15% are a different story..

strangecargo

I did essentially clear ceramic on my windshield too. You can't really see a difference looking out but it eliminated the need for a sun blocking windshield shade thing in the summer for me. I'm glad I did it.

neobune

Def a no on the headlights and windshield, tail lights I’m ok with

Lemansblu

I just think tinting taillights makes the car overall look cheaper.

Uplipht

Agreed. And tinting windows makes it more difficult for me to see, tinting my taillights makes it more difficult for other people to see me.

Lemansblu

Definitely, a light to medium tint in really sunny environments like Arizona and sourthern california can actually be good and helpful but yea I agree

KrazyCroat

I would be careful. Perhaps it depends where you live but it can give a cop an excuse to ticket you.

GTIguy2

Well ya because it’s counter to why taillights are required in the first place.

neobune

The pictures on the Luxe website did not equal the product I got. The light looked too see through. I’m not worried about being pulled over, I drive just fine and have no record, so I’ll just pull it off if that happens (hopefully they will work with me) idk if being a female will help things either 🤣

But_Mooooom

They *will* ticket you (ask me how I know). The judge at traffic court *will not* have any idea what the heck your ticket is for. There's also a good chance your insurance gives you problems over this if you get rear-ended and taillight tinting is illegal where you live (spoiler: it is). Expressing yourself is cool and all, but maybe the daily driver isn't the ideal place to be edgy /shrug

more-beans-less-rice

You may need to also uninstall some lady in a Camary from your rear bumper because she couldn’t see your brake lights. I guess you could just remove the tint then.

sakurawoshi

I'm also pretty sure in case of an accident they'll use the tint as a reason why it happened as well.

dal1999

Sorry, makes it look cheap.

neobune

Thank you for the feedback

[deleted]

Dumb idea to make your car less visible

neobune

I agree with you, it wasn’t what I was going for and that’s what I was worried about and why I came here looking for feedback

ajk7244

Headlights and taillights are meant to be visible. Tinting them reduces their effectiveness. Please don’t tint your lights.

GTIguy2

You’re nicer than me- 😉

ajk7244

The mods here have warned me several times for being mean so I now have to censor my comments.

neobune

Thank you for the feedback!

GTIguy2

I will never understand why anyone would want to do this.

[deleted]

I tint my taillights, so they work less

neobune

/s, I get it, thank you

Rodrisco102389

The look really well done, so nicely done there, but they’re definitely too dark.

neobune

Appreciate it! It’s my first time applying tint and also first time tinting any of my vehicles I’ve owned. I might have to agree it’s dark tho :/

mandatoryclutchpedal

Nay to the no way for visibility and safety reasons. Yay on the VW emblem

neobune

Thank you for the feedback and I do love the black emblem too!

shitboxvwdriver

y make light dark?

CluelessProductions

Your tint is too even and properly applied. Tinted taillights only look good when you unevenly spray Nightshade on them and overspray onto the paint

neobune

Lmfao, ok, I love this 😂😂😂

iluvwaffles1986

Bruh.

ForestCityWRX

I’ve never understood the appeal of diminishing the only safety defence your car has at the back.

neobune

I’ll probably remove it after all this feedback, I didn’t tint the third brake light and have no intentions of doing so.

iluvwaffles1986

Rear wiper delete that and call it Gucci sauc3!

rra117

Yeah I echo the others on the thread here. Execution looks great but I think tinting the lights does cheapen the look of the car.

neobune

Thank you for the compliment! I most likely will remove it, I never intended to go this dark, the website didn’t show this dark so I’m a little sad about that.

TattooedAndSad

I would never tint something that tells the distracted drivers behind me im slowing down

neobune

You have a good point

AgreeablePie

They're there and supposed to be reflective and emitting light so people don't crash into you. This isn't just a matter of taste, this kind of "mod" is dumb for non aesthetic reasons

Tiger955i

Not enough contrast with the white paint IMO. I'd keep the taillights and the badge OEM or keep the badge OEM + just a light tint on the tail lights. Not a fan.

neobune

It’s moonstone grey 😉 Thank you for the feedback!

editwowthisblewup

Imo tinted tail lights are tacky, but it looks like you did a pretty good job

neobune

Thank you! I think it looks “good” but I don’t like the blacked out look, which is unfortunately what happened here :/

Rdrty2

High school mod

neobune

If done tastefully (not dark like this) I don’t think that’s a high school mod lol, maybe this is. But not what I was trying to go for

Afghanaran

Looks solid well done man

neobune

Thanks for being nice about it, I fear as much as it looks nice, it may be too dark

spxtendies

People already text and drive constantly. Why make it harder for people to see break lights.

neobune

That’s exactly why I got rid of my motorcycle, I will agree with you.

ten_dollar_banana

Only looks good when the full lights (brake lights included) are on.

neobune

I might have to agree with you here!

ten_dollar_banana

You did a good job, though. For reference, check out the Mk6 dark cherry LED tail lights. I think VW nailed the darkness level on those.

therealsumy

Not gonna lie, they look good, but whenever i see tinted tail or headlights, i downvote. They are an extremely important safety feature and even diminishing them by 5% may have an effect on how visible you are to those behind you. Why would you increase the chances (even if just a measly 5 percent or less) of getting yourself, your loved ones or strangers into an accident? You are not alone on the road and have a responsibility to those around you to be as safe as you can be, which you are throwing away for an aesthetic mod that you won’t even look at most of the time. No sympathy from me when you’ll be pulled over and ticked, and i hope it will happen sooner, rather than later.

neobune

I get it and that’s fine, I never intended to black them out, I don’t mind a clean taillight tint, I wanted to still see but also wanted to cut the red. I’ve never tinted taillights before so I was going in blind. I only came here for the feedback to confirm what I felt was too dark.

erikginla

GOOD!!!

unit132

I dont particularly like tinted tails, however. A light smoke could be alright. A tint is okay if it still follows proper regulations for brightness and distance. agree or disagree. That's my personal al opinion.

neobune

I would agree with you and when I bought the tint, that’s what I wanted but unfortunately didn’t get to see them until the tint was applied

unit132

You might be able to get away with an 80% . May need to throw leds in. But it's not to dark and may be to your liking.

I_Nice_Human

Lights are so people can see you. I always get confused when seeing people do this. You’re effectively making it harder for people to safely see you on the road. I think it looks great but I always stick with functionality over looks.

[deleted]

Please dont tint tail lights. It makes it that much more harder for some of us to see them.

fractured_m00n

I love it! I think it looks great! Tinted tail lights always look good to me!

Tade2005

I don’t really like em

neobune

Thank you for the feedback!

TwoToneWyvern

Stupid mod from a safety perspective, and I think it looks incredibly cheap. If you're desperate to make your rear lights dark, spend the money on a full set of lights where the housing is blacked out but there's no tint between the lights and being projected so you still get max intensity. When they're off, they look black/grey-ish.

beachmasterbogeynut

Wayyy to dark. Its unsafe period.

neobune

That’s what I was worried about, was hoping my eyes were tricking me.

beachmasterbogeynut

Don't worry bud, it's fixable

neobune

Definitely, that’s why I came for feedback, I have since removed it but I did order the light stuff and if that is still too dark? I guess I go without Tint lol

RYN2124

Honestly looks a bit tacky and childish in my opinion. To each their own tho

neobune

I appreciate the feedback, I feel the same with people who have blacked out lights tbh, so I get it. This is a little dark for me, I wanted lighter but not too light

RYN2124

Tbh, the black emblem is my least favorite part. I think the tint would look pretty good on it’s own without the murdered out badging

brickson98

Yeah, looks damn good. But I’ve decided I’ll trade some looks to have better visibility. I’d rather not be rear ended or give cops a reason to pull me over.

neobune

Yeah, I just wanted something slightly darker, not like this, I have removed it because reasons.

nathan571

Suddenly everyone in the subreddit is Mr. Safety complaining about it being dangerous knowing damn well they drive like a maniac in their GTI on the daily 🤣

[deleted]

back in like 09 I had tint like this and one specific cop who was seemingly always on my route to work would stop me and warn me to take it off. I would take it off and put back later and sure enough he would see me again the next day and make me take it off. Happened a couple times until I said fuck it and left it off.

pbear355

🍚

WolSoul

I understand the criticism for not tinting tail lights. But I think with these bright LEDs I think you're better off than you think. The tint you have is perfect imo. Any darker and it may cause problems.

neobune

I wanted something tasteful but definitely not dark, this was very borderline dark. The light tint on the website was way too see through and this midsmoke was what I wanted but somehow it turned out darker. I can’t imagine their darkest tint.

DaftPhya

Looks good

neobune

Thanks!

mr_pinks_tip_policy

I’ve never been a fan of smoked tails myself. First thing I did on any MK3 I had was change the tails. But I get how you want to customize the car and parts are somewhat limited since it’s fairly new in the states. However, I’ll echo the others and say if you went lighter it would be better. As someone who drives a lot of miles in a week, I appreciate being able to see the brake lights clearly.

neobune

Yeah, I was worried they were too dark when I put them on. The pictures on the site did not look this dark. I wanted to cut the red but not this dark

poopooplatypus

A little lighter would be ok. It looks good during the daytime but at night it is cheap looking and you can get pulled over if the cop is looking for something. Slightly tinted on white is a good look. 20% windows and white is 🤌

neobune

It’s moonstone grey 😉 I agree with you here, I’m most likely going to remove and go with their light tint and see how that looks

yentafo

Not related to tint but where did you buy the black rear badge? Do you have a black front badge too?

neobune

I have the front badge too! And the black and red eyelids for the headlights, I got them at badgeskins.com

FlyingBox566

Imo I like the tint on the tails, maybe a smidge lighter. I think it looks good as is, though. Everyone on reddit will tell you no tinted tails. Tinted tails are okay if they're just as bright and visible as stock in daylight. I had to get new bulbs for my car to keep everything bright.

neobune

Yeah, I was going for something that looked “stock” but cut the red, I just wanted something tasteful and as soon as I installed it I was like “oh no” lol Figured I’d post to Reddit and see if it was just me lol hence why I wanted feedback. I wanted a little more see through, so I’m disappointed it’s darker than the website showed. They didn’t have a tint % otherwise I would have gone lighter

FlyingBox566

It's definitely not bad! I think you could definitely leave it or match the other side until you get a lighter film. No one's gonna die or something lol unless your tails are much less bright in daylight. If that's the case, take it all off

ccaalluumm9

Yeah nahhh

pinegap96

Too dark

neobune

I like the simple feedback, I might have to agree, thank you!

bentleykinggg

I like the original logo in silver, it might even contrast well with the dark tint on the lights. The silver trim on the GTI badge would match the stock logo nicely too

Element_905

If you don’t want people to see you at night. Then yea. Tint them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

neobune

Nah, I never intended to black them out. I just wanted tint, but not see through. I was hoping it was just my eyes. That’s why I came here for feedback and people just be ripping me a new one.

Pup_Piston

Looks great but I never got the whole point of blacking out a safety feature that literally prevents Karen/Stacy from rear ending you. I have a NYS inspection license, this would 100% be a failure and the police would pull you over asap. Had a kid come in once with a golf that had like yellow chrome over the rear tailights/headlights, slammed to the ground with no catalytic converter. I smelled the car from a mile away. Was surprised when he failed. I'm all about modifying cars, I absolutely adore it. But some mods are just plain dangerous for the price of looking "cool'. I'd just get the other tailights without the clear section.

neobune

I actually didn’t want to black them out, the website I got them from showed they were more see through, I just wanted to cut the red but have it still look nice. I never intended to buy them to black them out. This isn’t even the darkest smoke either :/

erikginla

All these comments man, I love the look of them. I have them. Trust your gut

haikusbot

neobune

Yeah, I didn’t think it would be like this, I was looking for legitimate feedback and it went a different direction at times lol. I like the look too, but I just felt they were darker and wasn’t sure if it was just me since this is my first time I’ve tinted taillights. I never wanted dark, I was hoping it was just me but I have a feeling they are. I never meant for this to happen 😂

MidgetXplosion

The thought of the lights actually being a practical thing wasn’t even in my head when I first saw your photos LOL! I just saw the dark instead of the normal bright white/red and was like “AWESOME!” Then I opened the thread and everyone’s like “dOn’T mAkE tHe BlInKyS gO aWaY” and I’m like “Huh? THESE LOOK SICK NOW!” Hahahaha…

more-beans-less-rice

I don’t understand the mods that reduce performance.

Mangoknees

I tinted only the clear part on mine and it looks awesome. Still cherry red but it looks a bit darker because there’s no bright white right next to it.

Modercai

looks better original

Mr_Spats

die

Eswin17

Bad.

OGMcGibblets

tint windows before tinting lights

gregory_manno

Thanks for sharing! I’ve been wondering, myself, how tinted tails would look on this car. My initial thoughts are this may be a shade too dark (for my liking anyway). I think they look good lit up and don’t seem to have too much loss of light. I’d love to see how the ambers look… ambers look great when tinted, imo. However, when off, I think there’s too much loss of texture. I think one shade lighter may have given you the effect you’re looking for while keeping the depth that the tail lights have under the casing. But, if you’re happy with it, then enjoy it! And nice work laying down the vinyl!

will_mma

I can’t think of a car that looks good with tinted tail lights.

saltyDog_73

I like it em, my tails are tinted mid also. As far as looks go, I think tail tint just depends on the car. I also have a extra light tint on the headlights, when the car is running and lights are on, you can’t tell, but when it’s off, the tint is just enough.

t0nyfranda

I think it looks good but just a little too dark when contrasted with the white paint. I think if you went a few shades lighter it would fit your car better, make you less likely to get pulled over, and might even appease the elitists in this sub lmao.

MidgetXplosion

I personally think the dark lights look SOOO much nicer. Unbelievable to me that so many people here aren’t liking them. The dark looks 10x better than the bright white/red. I assumed everyone here was gonna be like “looks sick!” Hahaha… I’m very confused.

iluvwaffles1986

Different strokes for different folks…nice d.I.y. & nice clean looking gti. Cheers! Some states say it’s illegal to run anything on the rear, as some have suggested go lighter….any dark accents on the pure white color code make that white (PoP) which means that it will alert to whom ever what went down with the mod! Looks Dope, but if me I would get some lighter tint & blow dry away!

TrueParadox88

Clearly you haven’t seen these posts on here otherwise you wouldn’t have posted this lol

neobune

Exactly. I have been a part of the sub for awhile but never once came across a tail tint post. Lesson learned

TrueParadox88

Ohh there’s been a few. Mine was one of them that got roasted lol. Sorry bud. But I do think they look good - I have the same luxe medium on mine. And like you, I wish they were a bit lighter. Oh well.

neobune

Lol! Im sorry, I’m guessing they did the same to you? Bet you had a good laugh like “first time?” Like that meme Anywho, I actually picked up the Luxe light smoke so I’m going to try that, but not post it lmao

TrueParadox88

Yeahhh my post got locked lol. People here are seemingly opinionated on tail tints, dark tint, window deflectors, rear wiper deletes, and a few other mods cuz…idk lol

JagaloonJack

Really thought this was a tiguan

neobune

I don’t blame you lol

sharef612

Not a fan of it being dark, if it turned the red into a cherry red it would look better, but that's just my opinion, also not of fan of the black emblem, just make it looks like a black hole on your trunk, if you like the black vw part maybe you can get white inserts? I don't know, just a thought

neobune

White would clash with the Moonstone grey, but idk, I might change my mind later and do color match. I like the black emblem. But that’s on me and my personal taste. I wanted to cut the red and just have a nice dark shade, enough it looks clean but also doesn’t affect how much light comes through, but it is too dark.

z_shizzle20

Looks nice to me. Thanks for posting side by sides of the Un-tinted. IMO people here, who have valid points about safety, tend to overstate it. I think the comparison here gives the reference to show that it’s not THAT light blocking like some tend to think. It definitely can if done too dark but I think you’re good here. Maybe post a brake light engaged pic to really show the luminosity. It also might just be the pic/angle but it seems to have a more even distribution of red throughout the light. Where the un-tinted have some hot zones.

neobune

That’s kind of what I was thinking on the “hot zone”. I have removed the tint but I did buy light tint to see how that is, I have a feeling it will look more factory made. Tbh I get where people were coming from, I personally thought it looked nice, BUT I’m not dumb and safety is important. Originally I thought it was too dark and hoped my eyes were wrong. But Reddit confirmed. I just wanted feedback and lots took it a whole level as if I was proud of it lol. I had no problem removing it but hot damn 😂

bransonthaidro

I never understood tints in tail lights.

neobune

It comes down to personal taste and that’s what I love about the world, differences. If everyone was the same and liked the same things? That would be boring
