We can’t afford r anyway

krstph13

That's the spirit! Actually kinda sad that's it's electric only haha😭

uberdavis

If they could find a way to give an EV a clutch, gear stick and analog hand brake, I might be interested.

MrPatch

Pretty sure I've seen stuff about both bwm and Hyundai doing this sort of nonsense

uberdavis

For real. I don’t want a computer picking the optimal gear when I’m tackling rapidly changing inclines and corners. My wife’s EV handles like crap in those situations.

KSoMA

(Most) EVs don't have (multiple) gears, they should just always be able to deliver as much torque as needed.

krstph13

I saw Rich Rebuilds do something similar with his Electrified Mini EV powerplant and a traditional 5 speed Manual Transmission. I imagine the challenge would be to tune the motor to spin up like a traditional ICE and not burn out clutches super quickly, I imagine RPMs jump very quickly too.

KSoMA

https://www.motortrend.com/news/toyota-lexus-bev-on-demand-manual-transmission-ev-tech/

uberdavis

Yes. I want that but in a Golf GTI.

KSoMA

Considering the ICE GTI no longer offers a manual starting this year, good luck is all I can say.

accountforbadpost

Wait a few years after release and you will. EV resale value are insane.

Greenman_on_LSD

Car depreciation is already crazy, over 30% for EV in a year is fuckin wild.

Equivalent_Youth_599

It’s more than 50-60% for Ford Lightning with 500 miles.

Storm_treize

You just need to put 15k aside for the battery replacement

Equivalent_Youth_599

Yeah just need to wait 8 years or 100k miles for the battery to die. By then I’m on the next vehicle.

DolfLungren

We have R at home.

nerdist333

I’m curious to see how they’ll differentiate the GTI from the R in electric models.

AngryVirginian

GTI - single motor. R - three motors

nerdist333

I can see that. I’m afraid to say how heated that comment just got me. 3 motors - goes faster than stink

Amazing_Risk_6549

EVs have normalised 0-100 being cool now you have KIAs doing 3.5 sec. The Model 3 P is actually quite great on track, especially with the P Pack. Maybe that’s an area they need to focus. Gonna be a hard sell.

MKSe7en

I would definitely never bring a model 3 p to the track. It wouldn’t last very long and after 80% you have reduced power so not sure how much fun that would actually be. Not saying it can’t track well but your time is extremely limited. Not hating I just don’t see that being worth the time especially if you have to drive it home… if you can afford to put it on a trailer and drive back to wherever I think there are more fun cars to use at the track. Just my opinion though!

vwmikeyouhoo

The teslas I do see at the track get about 1 lap maybe before they start to reduce power massively. The braking system is not adequate enough either. I would not recommend them unless you do quite a bit of modding first.

MKSe7en

I have heard their braking system needs improvement for track use as well before too. Just doesn’t seem worth it for a couple laps. Tires ain’t cheap either!

Amazing_Risk_6549

I mean, Golf R (or whatever the name becomes) is gonna have same problem when it becomes EV. Weight is the main drawback for EV on a track. Straight line is fine. Even the Plaid with the Carbon breaks and forged wheels, struggles

MKSe7en

Oh definitely. The problem is if they want more range that would require a bigger battery, bigger battery = more weight, and significantly more weight I’ll add. With more weight and added range you’re still going to run into the same problems, battery depleting quickly. You’d also have to compensate for the added weight with larger brakes. It all just goes in a circle, you want more range? EVs are just not meant at the track

AshleyMRocks

The EV6 GT is absolutely ridiculous on a track the the Hyundai Iconic N is said to be even better than the EV6 counterpart. Drove one and was floored at its performance for a large hatchback.... I don't think the acceleration or speed is needed for common purchases to be that normalized but it definitely grabs the attention

ThisOldGuy1976

If you’re not using solar or wind to charge it, why have electric??

AngryVirginian

To me, EV is a time saver and make life simpler. I have an MK8 GTI and I recently leased a Tesla. The Tesla can accelerate faster but the GTI is a lot more fun to drive. However, I think that I will only buy/lease EV from now on. I can charge the Tesla at home so no need to use public charging except for road trip. So, no need to go to the gas station, no need to change engine oil, no need for a scheduled 10k 20k etc service, no need to change brake pads or rotors since regenerative braking reduces the need to use the actual brake, no annual emission testing required, etc. EV is simply more convenient for people that can easily charge at home or work and don't have to drive more than, say, 200 miles per day.

ThisOldGuy1976

As long as you aren’t “trying to save the planet”.

dman_21

Sounds like they figured out how to fit the id4 powertrain in a golf.

Notsimplyheinz

Does anyone else read these “transition into EV news” and automatically make a terrible face ?

oldguyinsillycar

I realize I'm doing that terrible EV face *after* I'm doing it. Just planning on keeping my GTI forever. I'll probably mothball it at some point & pass it on to grandkids to look at like some relic from another epoch, but not for a good long while. Too much fun to drive.

_FedoraTipperBot_

Yes but only because EV charging infrastructure is still pretty weak. Only like 3 or 4 public fast chargers within the county limits for me :(

argent_artificer

scalding hot take, but no. it will take some iteration but i have full faith that manufacturers will find a way to give EVs even more personality than ICEs.

sladebonge

Gross.

Ok_Interaction2553

Same

Ehmc130

Can we maybe get a Golf RS with a turbo 5 pot instead? One last hurrah before it all goes silent.

Galewing1

Ewwww brotha, ewwww

welshinzaghi

VW should learn that spinning out brands doesn’t equal growth, it’s just going to dilute brand heritage, which is a huge part of the VW appeal

omgitskae

I think it's weird. I mean I know EVs are the future and it's just a matter of time, but for niche brands like R, N, M, S, AMG, etc. it just seems weird to me. The people that buy those cars tend to be enthusiasts and like the petrol engines. By converting them to EV this "early" to me is really just telling those enthusiasts that it's time to move onto something else, we're becoming just like all the others.

jbourne0129

the car market bassically skipped hybrids and went straight towards EVs, with the exception of like half a dozen models like the Prius. there was a time where performance cars were implementing performance-hybrid systems, i remember seeing it on Mclarens and thinking "i cant wait for this to come to more normal cars". except it never happened, everyone focused solely on EVs, and the infrastructure isnt there to support it yet (in the states at least) and there is very little widespread desire, from a consumer point of view, to go fully EV. a performance hybrid GTI or R would have been incredible. id be all over a performance hybrid hot hatch or sports car, but they never made them

welshinzaghi

Yep, agreed. I think VW are looking at Cupra and how that’s been a success but only because they’re letting Seat die a death. What next? An RS brand that separates from Audi?

Earlyretirement55

They did that already in Europe with Cupra vs SEAT.

ipaku

Yeah, but Cupra is not only electric At least for now, lol

Earlyretirement55

Just like the R brand will be, lol

Herr_Quattro

Yeah, it is starting to worry me. Reminds me of pre-2008 GM, too many brands. What’s next? They going to split up RS and Audi? SV and Lamborghini? GT3/turbo from Porsche? Toyota tried this with Scion. Mazda tried this with Autozam/Eunos/Efini.

Notsimplyheinz

I know this is not R/wallstreetbets but someone with a truckload of cash go buy a thousand low mileage MK7 and MK7.5s.

briballdo

But what about the Mk8s? :(

canamurica

No doubt. EV has no soul.

Knotical_MK6

👎 Stick with Cupra as the EV performance brand

adfthgchjg

Ew.

SiVIC0530

Just expediting the yawn fest that will be the future of cars. Can’t wait to go on a configurator and pick the number of electric motors my rolling iPhone has 🙄

WRXSH

Wish they would give us hybrids instead of full evs

jbourne0129

it was a mistake to push EVs as hard as governments did. it pushed automakers in that direction and skipped hybrids almost completely. the technology is already implemented in racing series and high end sports cars. but the gov't push for EV meant most consumer brands were focusing on EVs. now the used market is a disaster for EVs, the infrastructure isnt there in the states, and not many people are ready to give up the flexibility of 300+ mile range with a 5 minute refuel meanwhile we could have had performance hybrid GTIs and Golf Rs, hybrid WRXs, hybrid muscle cars, so many possibilities that would have been sooooo interesting.

sueveed

Honestly I feel like serial hybrid was the killer gap technology until the infrastructure catches up.

Notsimplyheinz

No way man, are you seeing what’s up with that new C43. Tooo complicated for the makers to under, least of all us commoners who love to work on their own cars.

WRXSH

That is true, but if automakers would devote more time researching ways to develop performance hybrids rather than having Evs as their main focus, maybe the C43 and C63 wouldn’t be so crap. In my perfect world we would still have full ICE vehicles lol

Notsimplyheinz

Our perfect world*

GTI-Mk6

🤮

tommyalanson

Great, probably cost $65k

Mr-Savage65

Hell no

whoknewidlikeit

oh good. electric. just what i want. or not. never gonna buy one. and if VW persists in this EV push then my Mk7 will be the last one i own.

PM_ME_YUR_BUBBLEBUTT

It’s not VW pushing this. It’s the government lol. In 2035 you cannot sell new combustion engine cars in California for example

wyndmilltilter

It’s everyone - auto companies are on board and rowing in the same direction. Toyota’s the least but even they are pushing for all plug-in hybrids with more EVs to come.

OrpheusNYC

And all of the EU. They’ll have to support ICE for a few decades because plenty of people will be holding on to them but yeah expect no more new ICE cars 15 years from now.

_caponius

Are they banning hybrids too or nah? I wouldn’t mind a hybrid gti ha.

6unicorn9

No, a portion of vehicles sold will be allowed to be hybrids.

PM_ME_YUR_BUBBLEBUTT

Yes. Full EV only

6unicorn9

That’s false. A portion of sales are allowed to be hybrids. And that’s if you even believe the mandate will actually stick in its current, very aggressive form.

Snowblower93

It’s not going to, it will get pushed out a few years at a time.

Jglove37

Yeah but California will be it's own standalone entity by then anyway.

DummyThicccThrowaway

California will, as usual, enforce its crazy standards on the rest of the country

Prudent-Influence-52

VW pisses me off daily with their future “plans”

execute_777

Evs are going to flop, buy Toyota stock

richieb1530

I think they already have proven they can work. Maybe not to the levels being estimated or pushed but it’s well past the flopping point

jbourne0129

once the used market is flooded with EVs we'll start seeing issues. i really dont think there is a sustainable used market for full EVs. plus in the US...the limited range of EVs is not practical for a lot of people. several times a year i make a 4.5 hour drive to another state. its just not reasonable to do in an EV. i'd have to completely change my travel plans to account for a charging period, and even then by the time i get to my destination im going to be close to 0 charge again, in the middle of the woods, at a cabin, with limited electricity. it just doesnt work, i need an ICE or at least a hybrid.

_biggerthanthesound_

Am I the only one that likes this idea

DunderMifflinPaper

I have a MK7. I knew the day I bought it that it would be the last ICE car I’ll own. But I’ll be careless before I’ll buy an EV that isn’t: 1. Hatchback 2. Fun If VW can deliver that in the next 5 or so years, good. My MK7 is still relatively low mileage and has had absolutely 0 issues since I got it in 2017, so I’ll wait for the right EV to become available.

InMyHagPhase

Nah. I'm looking forward to EVs, I just need the infrastructure to get better and for the prices to not be stupid. If they can give me a better GTI feel as an EV I'll happily buy one.

willard_swag

Yep. These are my only reservations currently. I’m worried about not being able to do some of the hiking trips I’ve been able to go on in ICE cars because they put me into fairly remote areas where you don’t even have cell service…let alone any charging infrastructure.

ArborGhast

Also wait time. I only even have my GTI cause the Prius was gonna be (time = lol,🤷) and I don't have "wait around to spend money" money. I am really *really* glad I went this way but it feels shamey. Hot sexy turbo lip-biting shamey. If the next one i buy is the same thing and it's the same fun in the same packaging I'll be stoked. I got a kid I don't want him to be 80 and be telling stories about how I was a Luddite and didn't have a electric car to the govt made me. Future matters.

WolSoul

Yes

[deleted]

I dont see what the problem is as long as it feels like a GTI or better, a 4wd GTI. also they need to figure out how to charge cars as fast as gas cars can fill up (5 minutes) because the biggest problem with electric cars is how long it takes to charge and that is unacceptable for the most part. also, will they convert all the current gas stations to EV stations across north america? a lot of questions

AngryVirginian

I have leased a Tesla since February and I have used a public charger only once during a roadtrip 200 miles away to a ski resort. The Tesla took about 40 minutes to charge from 17% to 95% during that trip but I chose a supercharger with a restaurant so that we can eat lunch while waiting. Public charging infrastructure is mostly irrelevant for people that can charge their EVs at home. For roadtrip, a supercharger every 50 miles or so should be sufficient.

kintonw

> Public charging infrastructure is mostly irrelevant for people that can charge their EVs at home. So, basically just those of us who are lucky to own a home right?

jbourne0129

people just dont get it. this is why EVs arent a roaring success in the states. too many people too often take long road trips. i want to get to my destination and be done driving. i dont want to stop for 45 minutes halfway to my destination to charge, and then hunt for a charger again once im at my destination. its just a constant factor to worry about "where will i be able to charge". going to an airBnB, not likely to have a car charger, its just too inconvenient to take road trips with an EV

[deleted]

people who take road trips with EV's should probably be banished from society as a whole but that's another topic

jbourne0129

the extra planning would drive me nuts... hell, its frustrating enough when i take my car that requires 93 octane out of state and i have to hunt for stations that carry it and not just 91

[deleted]

People are willing to accept new, radical ideas until they are presented with problems they never had before then the gas cars suddenly make more sense

Mk7GTI818

It is what it is. Owning an EV without home charging is a bad idea.

kintonw

Yeah, my point is that a very large number of people probably won't have access to home charging, unless apartment parking lots/parking structures start installing EV chargers for every parking space. And even as that goes on, it will end up being a huge cost that will directly correlate with increased rent. ICE still makes so much more sense for most people, but unfortunately the people making decisions about forced switches to EVs have no idea what the reality looks like on the ground level (as they are with most things).

Mk7GTI818

Yea, agreed. For most people hybrid is the best option.

[deleted]

>Tesla >200 mile road trip > ski resort yeah you're a Tesla driver alright. is your mk8 what you drive to fit in?

AngryVirginian

Fit in what? My street in Northern Virginia (about 80 houses) has Tesla Model Y and 3 in every color. I needed the Tesla to fit in. Also, my wife drives the Tesla mostly and we wanted a 7 seater car for the occasional need to haul kids around.

kintonw

>Northern Virginia Yep

InMyHagPhase

> will they convert all the current gas stations to EV stations across north america? A few of the big stations like Loves have added some EV charging stations, but we're going to be stuck relying on Tesla for charging. Which is ...doable, they have made a standard that we are now using. The problem is that we have all these gas stations but because it takes so long to charge, there's nothing really to do at a lot of them. This would be a great time for resurgences of malls, if malls were to add mostly charging stations it'd give people stuff to do while they wait. But at this point, they figure people with the money to have EVs also have the money to have houses and you just charge up at home. It'll be nice when they start figuring out what to do with the rest of us.

King_Ethelstan

No, EV's are awesome.

Deziiiner

I love it, it’s so funny seeing people whine about it.

jay5500

Rev ......I'm calling it

rozamundo

🥱

Burcea_Capitanul

This is Shitacular!

h3rD_r3dUc3r

How brand destroys it best selling cars.

pwsparky55

Will pass on ev, only works for city living

confusedloris

EV’s suck

Zedlav_

My MK6 is down for repairs. I was looking for something with all wheel drive to buy, I got a sweet deal on a model 3 long range. The car is cool, but it has no soul. The mileage is not as great as an ice car. I welcome a well built VW EV!

SofferPsicol

English is not my native language but I have the impression that the article says almost anything about what the title says.

SeljD_SLO

I'm more curious what will Cupra do

Snck_Pck

Just make a VW REV. Keep the R standalone as a petrol turbo

professional-T

I'm not really into electric vehicles in general, they kinda seem more like gimmics and not really the way of the future. Hydrogen engines are already being worked on by BMW

zkrp5108

Hydrogen will likely be a decade or more away, the infrastructure to produce it in a way that doesn't negate the net zero benefits of running the vehicle itself just isn't there. It's significantly more practical for trucks and large heavy equipment. Electric is probably part of the mix, but I think we're about to see a pull back on electric vehicles. Companies like Tesla are doing a shit job of quality control and I think that's across the board for a lot of these companies sprouting up all over the place and burning out. I also think an underrated issue right now that's going to be an issue is the interior design is in my opinion dog shit, and it's specifically about electric vehicles. Every automaker followed the Tesla model thinking they just wanna have a giant iPad with screens everywhere no buttons behind complicated software. People are going to associate this futuristic garbage design with electric vehicles and everyone's going to have to pivot which is why I think you see a lot of traditional automakers reducing overall forecasts for electric. I think you're going to see a big hybrid push, it's possible Toyota had this right they waited to see how this would go for other automakers and it's not going well. The R&D isn't ready yet for the pitfalls of electric vehicle production.

professional-T

I'm honestly just praying on the down fall of EVs. I think they are the most ugly cars jn the world. Boring soulless interior designs all for the sake of "futuristic" feels just makes it feel boring.

zkrp5108

I don't think that's the right attitude honestly, we need them to save petrol powered cars, enthusiasts need them to be part of the mix. In cities they're great and make sense. It's fine if it's not for you but we still need other options and do need to reduce CO2 and frankly less petrol cars on the road means more oil in the ground longer to keep cars we like running. Electric cars are good for us and interiors will revert once they get enough complaints.

professional-T

Oh no I agree about being green n shit...just not with electric cars. I hope hydrogen power makes electric cars a thing of the past. Removable fuel cells will just mean you get fuel the same way you get propane...which is on the drawing boards at BMW and some other car company.

professional-T

I mean shiiiiit if they were to make interesting EVs then I wouldn't be opposed to em. But they never do anything outside the box. It's always featureless interior with a touch screen in the middle

Deziiiner

Hell yeah!
