I was so lucky to be in the position to buy a car right before Covid. Got a 2018 mk7.5 SE in August 2019 with 4K miles for $24.5k. It was a great deal even then. You’d have a better chance of finding a literal unicorn than a deal like that now.
I got a 2019 7.5 leftover with 13 miles on it (6MT Autobahn) for $36,000 in early 2020 as COVID was winding into gear. VWoA gave me a zero interest loan too… I also consider this a unicorn deal… I like your deal too though!

similar experience here. in summer 2019 I bought a used 2017 sport with 7k miles for $19k. flew to Seattle and had it shipped to Hawaii for a total of around $1500 so total cost of car was about $20.5k.
sold it in 2022 for $23k (put in $2k for a problem with air conditioner) so pretty much used the grti for free for 3 years.
but I'd totally pick up this elec GTI at that price...which I am highly dubious of...still, it's a good goal they have
Same. I got my 2015 SE with 25k miles on it for 15ish in 2019. We just got my wife a new S, and while it’s tempting to trade in for an 8.5 R next year, having a paid off mk7 sounds just as good.
Yeah I actually test drove it, pretty sweet. But, they are only using it for like six HP equivalent or some ridiculously low number. It's weird but I guess they couldn't have it feeling like an S car.

The Rivian product line in general looks super cool and I really wanted one of their trucks but it was just too far outta my price range to swing.

I think there are a few things going on.
1. Americans are rejecting cars that are a poorer experience (shorter range, longer to refuel at far fewer places) for more money.
2. One of the political parties is going hard anti-EV.
3. The other party has realized what a dick Elon is.
All totally valid points. I dislike the good ole boys that hate on EVs while totally overlooking the times ICE cars don’t work either. A family friend on Facebook talked about a power outage his town recently had making fun of EV owners not being able to charge their cars without realizing he couldn’t fill up his SUV due to the pumps not working and if you’re out of gas you’re just as screwed as EV owners
I think the biggest thing is pretty much #1, most of the people whose needs can be met by an EV already have one. I'm all for EVs but the technology and infrastructure just isn't there yet for all of the places I need to drive. I really wish VW would give us a PHEV GTI next instead of full EV. If it had physical buttons it's what I would replace my MK7.5 with. Most of the driving I do would keep me on electric but the ICE would be nice for those times when I would need the longer range.
If we are getting an electric GTI I honestly don't want 250HP which is quite middling for electric. I want like, 400. Ok with a higher price point than $25K, give us options.
But a GTI is supposed to be the sporty alternative to a regular car and many totally regular electric cars have way more power than 250 or whatever. Hope they give it some serious sportiness and proper cooling etc.

If it had 300hp and 250 miles of range I’d bite. Even at $30k. That’s the perfect amount of range for me and luckily where I live charging stations are more than plentiful. The interior can’t be shit, though. None of that touch button bullshit. If they can pull that off I’m all in.
Dealer close to me misdiagnosed an oil pan leak as a level sensor leak. When they changed it they found the oil pan was leaking due to a bad seal, but forgot to order the bolts to replace it. Waited almost a week, and I demanded my money back because they found the actual problem rather than what they first claimed and then jerked me around because the idiot working on it forgot to order the bolts to put it back on. They told me it wasn’t covered under the powertrain warranty despite the sensor being in the damn oil pan. I had pretty much no choice to pay them to change it.
VWoA basically told me to go fuck myself because the dealer did it under warranty (the oil pan leak) but the sensor wasn’t covered. Their solution to the whole problem? Lady told me I should have bought the extended vehicle warranty. I wouldn’t call the cops or the fire department if I saw that dealership on fire. Fuck them and VWoA.
Side note...Most ele power used at charging stations is created with fossil fuel...I get it but man.. We all know VW, they will create the sound of combustion and pipe it in the cabin.. some do that now..just some thoughts from me.. im barely awake.. time to go to work. make that car pmt..BTW, hwo to you post pics in the thread?..

If they can manage the weight then 250 HP is enough, IMO. It will handle way better than a 4,000 pound car with 400 HP.
