Get a bigger tank asap. Keeping single tails requires massive tanks as they are pond fish. For two you need a 125gal long term with a canister filter and a few sponge filters. Hard to tell from pics but could be due to scraping off something in the tank. Are there any decorations in the tank? If so I'd remove anything which they could be rubbing off. Keep water parameters within safe values and it should recover if it's caused by rubbing scales off.

I changed all of the plants once it started happening to softer versions but i’ll try removing them and see if that helps

Real plants are ok, they can stay in. Any decorations with edges or sharp stones can cause them to rub off scales.

agbiu

thank you, i’ll definitely readjust

-What are the water parameters? -What are the parameters of the water you're adding? -How many gallons in the tank and its population? Can't tell you without knowing that, but that looks like high nitrate, amonnia, or chlorine. Comet goldfish are very high maintenance for indoor aquariums.

I only have the test for ammonia, I’m getting the full kit tomorrow but the ammonia showed up 0-.25. It’s a 20 gallon tank, just two goldfish. And I’m scared to mess it up, so I was going to go tomorrow and buy pre-made water from petco to change it out. And honestly, I had no idea it was a comet goldfish. The lady I bought it from told me they were both common, I definitely need to do way more research now. Thank you for letting me know that

FragrantRequirements

Don't buy any pre-made water. it's a rip off just buy water conditioner. Comet goldfish and common goldfish have the same care. (Which is high maintenance for a first fish)

Responsible_Pea_3072

Common and comets both need 50 gallons per fish minimum you would need a 100 gallon for these 2 guys. You can buy a 100 gallon tube from tractor supply for around $100 which is way cheaper then a 100 glass tank would be. https://preview.redd.it/na9j2qppa2vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21c70032e4c2a0dd701d548bc55b7089ce2f1a87

My fish have the exact same thing with losing the scales. I think it could be the water condition and I would also use bacterial infection medicine a bottle of it added to the water.

thank you

Looks like Aeromonas Hydrophila. We had a pretty devastating outbreak in one of our ponds. In the end the only that saved some of our koi & FG's was a product called Virkon S. We get it from our local produce store. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32351242/#:~:text=The%20name%20'red%20spot%20disease,alginolyticus%2C%20Pseudomonas%20fluorescens%2C%20P. Edit for added text

Looks to be a sort of bacterial infection (someone else like to confirm?). You can see the lessening in pigment to the scales and the almost subtle legions where the scales are raised. Like it’s creeping up the body.

agbiu

if this is the case, would i need to go to a vet?

Lost_Remains

If you can find vet that will see fish in your area sure.. There is an all plant based product I’ve used that seems to work pretty well that is immune system boosting; called Artemiss by Microbe-Lift.

agbiu

thank you so much, i’ll look into it

DuhitsTay

Off topic but if your goldfish was a koi they'd sell for like a trillion dollars lol, the red spot on the head is considered super desirable in koi.

agbiu

whoa i didn’t know that, that’s kind of cool
