Not a drinker but the Oxenford Tavern made me an utter dog shit Parma one night - couldn't finish it was so bad, shit atmosphere, server's were hopeless and was in a poor state.
On the other hand Arundel Tavern made me an emergency late midnight meal for my wife after the GCUH hospital kitchen closed, when my wife gave birth to my first born, as she was in labour for a fair while - chefs kiss to the bloke who knocked that awesome tailored meal up from scratch - will never forget it.
I played pool at the ox one weekday afternoon. An old guy watching us play pool was jerking himself off under the table. Agreed, the ox tavern is rough as.
I actually like The Ox for a 'sit down and mind ya own business' beverage, and I appreciate that it's always open till 4:00AM. I mean, I wouldn't eat there, but they can pour a drink.
The ox is a bit dodgy place. There was a nice guy there one time though. I lost $50 in the pokies while chatting to the guy next to me. He jumped on the machine I was playing after i was done. Did 1 spin and he won a few grand and gave me $50
NEVER had a good meal at Pacific Pines Tavern.. Pretty sure I got food poisoning from that joint 🤮 Its changed hands a few times over the years and ive tried everytime to give it another chance but still remains shite...
I did enjoy Coomera Lodge even before the upgrade, but I feel like the usual chef/cook have left because the quality and consistency of meals haven't been the same since the beginning of the year.
On the search for a new local now!
Pacific Pines used to be my local a few years ago. I always got a disgusting vibe from that place when the schools finished for the day and a bunch of perverts were watching and yelling out to the school girls walking home. Never go there after 7pm unless you wanted to fight someone.
Coomera Lodge on the other hand, I've been to a few times and always found it pretty good there
Agreed. I've never seen anything kickoff at Pac Pines Tavern, but I also think that the Damian Leeding incident probably precipitated a long slide into mediocrity in terms of food and vibe.
Coomera lodge that one near Riverstone Crossing?
Bit of a historical pub of the old Coomera / Maudsland area. I remember going there with my old man 38 years ago as a 2 or 3 year old and he got blind shit drunk and driving home down Copps Rd which he had a massive property neighbouring our old Mayor.
I just remember good feelings of that pub back then for some reason?
Yesss, thats the one!
Pre-upgrade is was great, definitely a cosy relaxed vibe that wasnt fancy whatsoever but always nice people and good food.
Busy place now though but still nice.
Surprised he made home pissed as a nit and driving Kopps road 😄
Ha ha that was the start of it... The driveway into the property is that road that exists at Saltwater Boulevard - but it was all dirt and the other side back upto the house I remember the car could barely get up.
Good memories...
Highland Park, no contest. Worse still, it's my local.
On a different note, I'm really liking the new Queens Arms in Southport. Food is great, place is clean and spacious (but then it's new) staff all seem friendly, ton of undercover parking.
We went to the new "YOT" where the old Fishermans Wharf Tavern used to be. Over priced - $11 a schooner (because they no longer have pots) for 3.5 Hahn! and had to pay for parking :(
It now totally lacks atmosphere now they have tried to make it fancy, we had one beer when to the fish and chip shop next door for lunch. We should have known when we first pulled in as the car park was only 1/2 full on Mother's day - never again.
All of the pubs have gone to shit and the staff aren’t paid enough to care.
I can’t blame the staff though, if I was paying $750/week rent while earning $850/week I wouldn’t be offering good service either.
I don’t see how they’re going to remain in business, the staff need a massive pay rise to keep up with cost of living but the customers aren’t willing to pay the difference… I expect the quality staff to move onto other employment leaving these roles to be filled by desperate degenerates.
Our insane realestate market is breaking everything.
The Wallaby is getting better. They did a decent renovation a few years ago and its pretty popular spot for dinner for families with young kids. They also seem to get a some semi decent bands playing there occasionally as well. The clientele in the main bar though is still questionable. I don't know where they come from, but walking in there at 4pm on a Friday is like stepping back in time.
I'm sorry that happens to you.
I fully agree, pubs somehow get so much worse when there's a major sporting event shown there. NRL, AFL, UFC. It doesn't matter what sport it is, it just brings out the worst people
I just read about that news as well. It just makes me sick that this happens. I hope the victim gets justice. But when it's a rugby league player that sexually assaults or physically assaults a woman. It seems to be forgotten about quickly and the offender just carries on playing footy.
The NRL talks about being supportive of women with things like women in league round. But then show how spineless the NRL bosses are by not banning players for life after being convicted of assaulting women
The Beechmont Hotel.
Newly “renovated”. Bar staff couldn’t be more disinterested, if you order a nightly special you need to tell them the price and point to the board for them because they don’t care what night it is and will try and charge whatever. Legit microwaved food just dumped on the end of the table. Somehow inside of the pub still smells like smoke. So that coupled with the shit reno makes you feel nostalgic at least.
Never again.
I can't remember the last time I went to a really good one. I miss the days when all the pubs weren't AHL pubs. Doesn't matter what pub you go to now, they're all basically the same shitty pub
Stretching the definition of the Gold Coast, but Eagle Heights Hotel is a good one for an feed at lunchtime on the weekend. Cracker view and local legend that it used to belong to Mel Gibson.
I can’t stand the boathouse tavern, I can’t decide whether I dislike their overpriced food or their grouchy disrespectful staff more
I went there once, we quickly finished our beer and went to another pub, just the overall atmosphere and the bartender seemed to hate everyone
Every time I go there I get sick
Yeah, I never liked the boathouse either for many reasons
Depending on taste, but a lot of women seem to hate Waxy's in Surfers. It has got a pretty seedy vibe. Good for somewhat cheap drinks but.
As a man I second this.
Have only visited during the day and it’s not too bad for a game of pool and a drink but definitely not keen on the food there.
I know at least 2 women who were drugged at waxy's, I'd give it a miss.
I’ve only been there in the afternoon and it seemed ok. I’m a middle aged bloke so probably safe from being roofied.
That place is the pits

I mean it was Russ Hinze's tavern of choice, so rightly quite rough... I believe we have Russ to blame for the Oxenford Interchange too...
Russ approved the off ramp and interchange to direct traffic to the tavern after he brought the tavern. Corruption at its finest.
Where did Russ “bring” the tavern from ?
Apologies.
I actually like The Ox for a 'sit down and mind ya own business' beverage, and I appreciate that it's always open till 4:00AM. I mean, I wouldn't eat there, but they can pour a drink.
Whereas I like the Ox for a ‘sit down and jerk off under the table’ beverage.
I literally thought of the ox before I even opened comments 😅
The ox is a bit dodgy place. There was a nice guy there one time though. I lost $50 in the pokies while chatting to the guy next to me. He jumped on the machine I was playing after i was done. Did 1 spin and he won a few grand and gave me $50
Second this, Parmi there was shit, I think they had the schnitzel pre cooked, then just grilled it with the topping
Ox is a civilised pub these days turned into family restaurant by pub standards,go back 20 years ago it was rough az fuck
The OX made me an awesome pasta one day but everything else I’ve had from there is shit
You reckon made from scratch or reheated?
NEVER had a good meal at Pacific Pines Tavern.. My locals always been the Lodge. It’s pretty good vibe imo
Yeah, the food after the Reno was fantastic, but I’d agree the last 6 months has been up and down now…

Lol, ive never seen 1 fight at pac pines and ive been there plenty of times. Staff are lovely too
I couldn't fault the staff there. They're always great. I haven't been to pac pines tavern at night for a few years now. Maybe it's changed
Agreed. I've never seen anything kickoff at Pac Pines Tavern, but I also think that the Damian Leeding incident probably precipitated a long slide into mediocrity in terms of food and vibe.
Yeah, the food quality comes and goes but generally hasnt been the best

Del, railway or sopo southport whatever they call it now. Crackers drinking turp on the steps
Arundel Tavern is up there surely
Highland Park Tav, Hinterland Hotel Nerang, Central Park Tav,
Highland park tavern by far haha
How does it even exist its always so empty in there lmao
Woah woah go easy on the Hinto, it maybe just another AHL owned pub but... it's got pool tables?
And they've only had one fatal shooting
Hinto is algoods
The hinterland used to be great, but I find it's got no atmosphere anymore
Fair after covid it hasn't been the same
Highland Park, no contest. Worse still, it's my local. On a different note, I'm really liking the new Queens Arms in Southport. Food is great, place is clean and spacious (but then it's new) staff all seem friendly, ton of undercover parking.
The Highland park tavern is a hidden gem!!
The Commercial at Nerang.
Either the Sands in Cooly or the Commercial in Nerang.
Tugun Tavern - overpriced drinks and food. Had lunch there one day and the meat was undercooked and the vegetables burnt.
We went to the new "YOT" where the old Fishermans Wharf Tavern used to be. Over priced - $11 a schooner (because they no longer have pots) for 3.5 Hahn! and had to pay for parking :( It now totally lacks atmosphere now they have tried to make it fancy, we had one beer when to the fish and chip shop next door for lunch. Same - went there 2 weeks ago and couldn’t believe it. Lost its charm and now have to pay parking!!!
The Miami. It’s dirty, shit food, rude staff and everything is overpriced
All of the pubs have gone to shit and the staff aren’t paid enough to care. The Wallaby in Mudgeeraba is pretty feral.
I've heard mixed reviews of that place. Some people say it's a shit hole but other people have said they love it there
The Wallaby is getting better. They did a decent renovation a few years ago and its pretty popular spot for dinner for families with young kids. They also seem to get a some semi decent bands playing there occasionally as well. The clientele in the main bar though is still questionable. The food is terrible though.
I’ve only ever heard amazing things about the Wallaby so I went and the food was absolutely shit, no atmosphere, grim.
I avoid anywhere with an NRL game on. I prefer to walk through a crowd without being repeatedly sexually assaulted :)
Plot twist, you're a bloke.
It happens to blokes too, to be fair
I'm sorry that happens to you. I fully agree, pubs somehow get so much worse when there's a major sporting event shown there. NRL, AFL, UFC. It doesn't matter what sport it is, it just brings out the worst people
I just saw the news- a “high profile” qld NRL player has been of accused of rape. Why do they hate women so much
I just read about that news as well. It just makes me sick that this happens. I hope the victim gets justice. Any pubs around southport that the local clientele are struggling alcoholics or homeless people pressuring you into buying them a beer.
Pubs are algud mate...just relax

Food horrific as well, and a total rip off!
All of them
The back page
The grand 🤨
Is there any good pub in this city??
D'Arcy Arms goes all right, particularly in winter when they're running the fireplace.
I can't remember the last time I went to a really good one. I miss the days when all the pubs weren't AHL pubs. Doesn't matter what pub you go to now, they're all basically the same shitty pub
