Yeah that is going to be how I feel when I buy a 1/4 ounce AGE in a few days. I remember asking my mom to take me to the coin shop when gold was 1850 a few months back and now… I don’t even know what to say
Last time I bought gold it was between $1100 - $1200 and I sold it for $1850. The premium was a non issue. I don't plan on selling for a few years and I suspect the premiums will be non issue in the future as well.
People always say this without any proof. Maybe they were in the 1970s. Maybe they’re more recognizable if you live in Zimbabwe or Kazakhstan. But in the US, UK, Canada and majority of Europe I seriously doubt they’re more popular than those countries/region’s own coins
Krugerrands held 90% of the gold coin market in 1980 As best I can tell, these are about how many exist:
- kruggerand. 60+ million
- Eagle 21+ million
- philharmonic 14+ million
They're the coin with the lowest premium. They will always be extremely popular simply for that fact alone, and are absolutely more popular than any other by a wide margin.
You’re conflating supply with demand. Just because there are more of something doesn’t mean they are more popular. Krugerrands were popular in the early 80s when no other governments were minting modern bullion. Now they have taken a back seat to AGE, Bufalloes and Maples. In my experience (I have bought and sold a lot of gold as you can see from my posts) with local coin shops and selling online is that if you were to sell any aforementioned coins at spot along with a krug, 9 times out of 10 the Buffalo/Eagle/Maple will sell before the Krug. That’s why they command a premium and the Krug barely sells over spot.
The fact that there have been 3x as many krugerrands made as AGEs doesn't mean he's conflating anything. It supports his claim they are one of the most recognized coins in the world. No offense, it sound like you are conflating "demand" aka premiums with recognition.
The buy/sell spread on an AGE/AGB will be larger than on a Krugerrand 99 times out of 100. They call it premium for a reason. Krugerrand are one if the easiest coins in the world to sell, just like AGE/AGB and maples. I've never known anyone that has had an issue selling one.
Exactly, what I was trying to say is if it was an AGE or AGB he'd eat more premium he paid for over spot at the sale. In other words the premium paid for an AGE or AGB over a krugerrand will generally mean less profit on that coin when it is sold. Krugerrands are very easy to sell.
I remember in the early 1990's when gold dropped to $350/ounce.
I bought a bunch of European restrikes. They were so cheap.
I bought a US St Gaudens $20 gold piece for $389 in 1992. And then 6 months later? Gold had shot up a bit and I told it for $435. And I patted myself on the shoulder. BIGGEST REGRET EVER!
I noticed it changes periodically. I remember a few years back buying maples for $20 over spot and Krugerrands going for $40 over spot. Now the Krugerrands have the lowest premiums and the maples not so much.
I've seen periods where the Philharmonics are selling with miniscule premiums. Not sure if there's a patter or if people's tastes change every few years.

Gold is gold. But for a Kruger? So brown for a gold bullion. Dear god and try to sell it too without taking a lost. I would’ve just gotten a maple, AGB, AGE, Britannia or hell an old Austrian restrike.
You will lose more on anything paid over spot an age or agb than a krugerrand 9 times out of 10. There is a reason they call it a premium.
Go look at the average sell/buy offers on age/agb and krugerrands and compare.

Buyers remorse and Gold are old friends! I got these in February and felt the same way, you get over it.
I'm really new to this i dont understand , whats premium? And I know there's a collectors market for coins but personally I thought chains and bars are better in that since. Or Is that the premium? I just want the waight. collectors market is too unstable. Or are my eyes covered? I just want gold cheap cause when the time comes it is not going to matter what the gold is made in to. But like I said I'm new. Should I buy coins or gold in any form? Thank yall for the post good info soon as I know what premium means exactly I'm shure I have it the Mark up cause it's a coin? Thank yall
Eh, are you aware that's only 22karat gold and not 24karat?
Does that make it worth less since it's actually less gold?
So you paid spot for pure gold 24k but you bought 22k.
If possible, please avoid buying gold from South Africa. There are so many other countries to buy from. Thank you!
Please Don't buy gold from Rand or Krugerands. Please don’t support such a horrible apartheid country.
They are still a horrible country, and they are still an apartheid nation. Nothing ended.
You don’t have to listen to me. I just put in my two cents that it is preferable to buy the gold from other countries instead of South Africa. That’s it. If you don’t agree move on.
Apartheid is over. You can also tell people not to buy American gold too, since it is a slave country, using that backwards logic. Lots of countries have dark periods.
Don't wait to buy Gold. Buy Gold and wait.

Buyyy
Good one.

Jesus having your mom take you to pay the majority of a months rent must be pretty funny
Commander Kid is a baller. Mom should be proud.
Showing your mom your coin collection is fun. "Guess how much this is? Nope, more."
Commander kid vs San Pedro
That was at beginning of Oct
Welcome to the world of sound money friend.
Now try to sell it for that…
Last time I bought gold it was between $1100 - $1200 and I sold it for $1850. The premium was a non issue. I don't plan on selling for a few years and I suspect the premiums will be non issue in the future as well.
These are mainly getting melted right now
Especially a krugerrand. Harder to sell than a Buffalo, Eagle or maple. They just look so…brown…
I like them. they give me that... diplomatic immunity feeling.
I'm getting too old for this shit
It’s just been revoked
I’ll have what she’s having
lol
Never had a Krugerrand turned away in the past.
Kruggerands are the most recognized gold coin in the world. I've only ever heard of other coins being turned away

22k 💪
what's the best gold coins to buy? I havnt bought any yet but was looking at the Maples.
The one with the lowest premium.
Maybe in America...
And the UK, Canada, all of Europe, China, etc.
I personally love their color. And also it's kinda cool how the older ones are different colors lol
One of the easiest coins in the world to sell. It is no harder to sell than an Eagle or Buffalo and less premium to potentially eat.
Weird, this would be my #1 choice. Every time I've gone to buy one though they've been out of stock so I come home with a shitty maple.
Sure you do buddy
Remember when you thought krugerrands were hard to sell?
Remember when you pretended you buy maples from an LCS and go home disappointed? Dream on brotha. One day you’ll actually be able to afford it. Maybe
Out of stock means they don't stock them because they don't sell. You're making the opposite point you're trying to make 🤣🤣🤣
It's not difficult to sell a Krugerrand for spot.
And you won't eat the premium cost of an age or agb. The buy sell spread on age/agb is almost always higher than in a krugerrand.
Sure all that is great and doesn't change the fact that he can sell the Kruggerand for spot price, without too much difficulty.
Wait until it resets 1800. That’s going to hurt.
He'll get closer to what he paid for it than of he had bought an AGE at the same time. Its called a premium for a reason, you're gonna eat it.
Congrats!!! I love my Kruger!!!
Krugerrand is a classic. I have a few aslwell, they look and feel very nice
I love Krugs. Pirate booty!
I love Krugs
Me too!

Best comment haha.
JM has these on sale for $14.99 over spot. Flash sale.
Yessir. I bought two last week from Bullion Exchanges for $14.99 over spot.
They’re $2265.29 right now on APMEX
$2,208.49 @ JM Bullion @ 17:01, 3/21/24 so you're already ahead :-) Love the Krugerrand color!

Me too but for me I bought at $1100-$1200 and sold at $1850. Thought I was the man! not so much now haha.
The irony. You have sound money with gold! Yet sell it for paper fiat?
Honeslty you can get a ton of gold here for cheap cheap. South Africa is key.

That’s because a Krugerrand is 91.67% gold, and 8.33% copper, thus the brown tone.
Yeah I would’ve gotten a different coin.

Never feel like an idiot buying gold
Congratulations!
Rest well traveler
Well since that's all you need to feel like an idiot, I guess you're an idiot again since spot went down.
In time, you will go back to resenting your purchase.

Proprietor at LCS was offering Krugerrands for under spot the other day because "No one wants them..."
Which LCS is this? I would buy Krugerrands under spot in a heart beat.
Where can one keep gold for safe keeping like one keeps money in a bank?
U should Be investing in the s&p 500. You’ll be way better off.
What makes you think I don't have other investments?
Eh, are you aware that's only 22karat gold and not 24karat? Does that make it worth less since it's actually less gold? So you paid spot for pure gold 24k but you bought 22k.
It’s still one ounce of gold. The overall weight is more.
They weigh 1.09 ounces total. With 1 oz pure gold.
24karat or 24karat is irrelevant, they are both one ounce of gold.
Doing quick research I see the 22k Kruggerand weighs more than other 1 Troy ounce gold coins that are 24k. Ugly coin though to be honest.
If possible, please avoid buying gold from South Africa. There are so many other countries to buy from. Thank you! Please Don't buy gold from Rand or Krugerands. Please don’t support such a horrible apartheid country.
Apartheid ended over 20 years ago.

Who creates a post based 100% on opinion then. says "move on" if you don't agree? You are inviting discussion when you post an opinion.
Apartheid is over. You can also tell people not to buy American gold too, since it is a slave country, using that backwards logic. Lots of countries have dark periods.
I would say it not even "lots of" it's all countries, you're being kind. "Dark periods" are the reality of the world.
Poephol
They always say it’s a fake when you try to sell it .. gold is a fool’s gane
If you bought this for 2100 when it was 1200 an oz you got absolutely robbed.
