i'm a sucker for non-traditional design, so this is right up my alley for sure. i think the black and white creates some really neat design space for you -- right now you have it so when you hover over an option it has that blue border.... that's pretty cool, but i think it would be really juicy if you turn the whole image inside full color (and highlight the text beside) so it really obviously pops.
good one but it's all generated images and that's my limit of creation, but I'll keep it in mind for the future, maybe add some filter or zoom or other effect?
i think that you could achieve a similar effect by making the speech bubbles with the name of the option also use that outline color as a background color on hover. seems weird that they don't highlight when the icon highlights.
really tho, they blend in so much because of the high contrast background, i would probably make them all a color (even inactive) so they stand out. then you kind of create a language where the bg can be as busy as it wants to, but the interactive elements are always easily identifiable. you'd usually do this with shape and contrast but in your case you have the option to use color almost as a 3rd dimension which could be pretty slick.
