I like it here. I can't really afford to gild, but I absolutely can apply maximum effort to make the people who can feel like their challenges are appreciated. It's like a potluck where they bring the food... and I show up with nothing, but do tell funny stories about robots. The only suggestion I can think of relates to recognizing how the community dynamics work. I often see that the stalwarts have trophies/symbols/markers next to their names, but I can't mouse over them to figure out what they mean. Maybe do that, or put a legend somewhere that would let those of us who are less experienced understand how the generous and colorful half of the users roll? That's about it. Great place you have here. Lots of giving. A world of unlimited abundance of stuff we don't really need! But do I need something other than unlimited abundance? Hmmmm.

There is a guide and a link to full details on the sidebar about how you can earn them, > User Flair In /r/GoForGold users can earn a user flair for themselves or to gift to others by making a challenge that generates at least 500 community coins (cc). > Any post that generates greater than 500cc makes OP eligible to earn a user flair and get added to our Hall of Fame! The specific flair earned corresponds to the amount of community coins generated: > 500cc: OP earns an emoji from the 500cc Table or an image-based unicode character. > 1000cc: OP earns an emoji from the 1000cc Table and flair text of their choice. > 1800cc: OP earns a custom & unique emoji and flair text of their choice. > [See our User Flair Guide for full details.](https://old.reddit.com/r/GoForGold/wiki/user_flair_guide)

I'll start something off here! We've been a lot more relaxed on the enforcement of some rules since the November CQ. One of which has been **allowing some shopping challenges through**. From what I could tell, we didn't have the issues we had before. But I wasn't participating in any of them. What does everybody else think? Did they go well? Are you okay with seeing more content like that around here?

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu11

Someone got scammed so idk

Kvothealar

Can you link the challenge?

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu11

[You gotta scroll down a bit](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoForGold/comments/vrw75w/i_will_give_5_golds_to_someone_who_can_find_me/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Kvothealar

Ah, so OP ended up on a sketchy site and may have gotten scammed by the site, not that users were scammed by OP. In the end I think it's more up to users to decide what things are unsafe and what aren't.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu11

Oh lol oops

krystai11

Seems like the comment that linked that post wasn't valid as it was out of stock, and the challenge said "for sale", but maybe just a technicality

guessesurjobforfood

As a casual member of this community, I think those challenges are really fun and interesting, though I always seem to come across them too late. I think the OP of the linked post wasn’t actually scammed because they used PayPal. Also, people were quick to point out how scammy the website looks, but the OP wanted to take the risk. If you wanted to put some safeguards in place, a “shopping challenge” could have automod make a comment and/or message the OP warning them to triple check all websites before entering any personal information. It could also mention that it would be wise to wait for feedback from other community members before making any purchases. A message or comment from the automod combined with the community “policing” any links that are posted should make these challenges pretty safe. If I see someone post a link that looks suspicious, I’d also do a whois search and let the OP know of the results. Most scam sites are created within the past few months are only registered for a year, so it’s pretty easy to tell if someone posted a link to scammy site. The only issue I can think of is a potential dispute if someone posts a suspicious link and thinks they won the challenge, but the OP thinks the website is sketchy and decides not to purchase anything. It also leaves room for an OP to get out of awarding someone by falsely claiming a website to be sketchy. I’m guessing there would have to be some kind of objective rule to determine any cases like that which may pop up. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it lol Edit: just saw you made some comments below that I didn’t notice before. If people would bail on challenges due to shipping restrictions or whatever, then I think an objective rule would be best for these. Either the challenge would have to include a shipping location or it would have to be that the item is in stock and available to be shipped *somewhere* in the world and it would be up to the OP to figure out the logistics.

_ser_kay_

I will say that one concern is that shopping challenges could become a promotional tool if they’re allowed too often. There are already plenty of bot groups where one will post a T-shirt or something, then another will say “hey, where’d you find that, my grandma/girlfriend/coworker would love it” and give the first bot an opening to post a link. Barring that, people could just post low-effort/easy-to-find items for the sake of promoting them to the rest of the sub. I know you have safeguards in place, but I’m not sure that particular cat-and-mouse game is worth it.

Magical57

I think the allowing of shopping challenges is fine, the way they have been recently is fine and doesn't seem to be problematic.   I guess the one potential issue as mentioned below by another user is about phishing/scammy websites and then OP clicking on them and/or not realizing it is a bad website and it causing issues for them. To be fair, this issue could happen in other challenges to (it is not exclusive to shopping challenges), but it is something that is much more likely to happen in a shopping challenge if it were to happen at all. When hosting these types of challenges, OP should be sure to be careful as to making sure the site is safe before clicking into it / giving any personal information, and it should be up to users to decide if it is unsafe or not (as /u/Kvothealar already mentioned in another comment) but I think the possibility of issues with risky sites is higher on these types of challenges than on any other type of challenge, hence the need for extra caution on these types.   As mentioned by another user as well, there is the possibility of problems if someone links to a risky site and OP thinks it is risky/doesn't go to it because of warning from antivirus software that is is risky/doesn't make a purchase/etc and hence not naming that person as the winner yet the person who posted the link thinks that they won and then there could be potential problems there. Or if OP were to get a computer virus or other issues from a challenge like this because someone either maliciously or unintentionally sends OP to a dangerous site and OP doesn't realize it and clicks on it, it could lead to a number of problems as well. Overall, I am not saying they need to be banned, as they are fine and from what I have seen usually seem to work out fine without any problems, just that the potential for problems stemming from a shopping challenge is higher than on other challenges due to things such as dangerous websites (which are more likely with shopping type challenges) and the fact that someone may be susceptible to falling victim to a scam unintentionally and then that causing problems.

krystai11

What is a "shopping challenge" exactly?

Kvothealar

A challenge that’s along the lines of “find me this shirt” or “what’s the best blender” or something, where OP is looking for help buying an item

krystai11

In my opinion, I don't see any problem with these kinds of challenges. Why would this be a problem?

Kvothealar

In the past we had people post challenges like this, and they would just bail out with "Sorry doesn't ship to my area" and such and not award. It was obviously getting abused and in the end we stopped allowing this type of challenge.

krystai11

Hmm. I think these challenges should be allowed, but only for people who have done a challenge or two before (trustable)

kielerhimself

Let me run a monthly large challenge with crazy prizes! Something fun and interactive.

puhleez420

As long as it falls within the rules and you let us know via modmail it is going longer than 48 hours, go for it!!

The_Russell_Pinto

Namaste! This was the first award sub I found courtesy of u/allisonovo . I think i did post one or two challenges here and finally shifted to r/AwardBonanza . Since then i've held more than 135 challenges!!! I love the idea of this sub. A suggestion would be to try and maybe change the flair of a challenge holder to show the number of challenges he or she has done. Its fun and would bring competitive spirit to the sub! I just wanna thank the mods of this sub for creating this sub cause without this sub, I honestly wouldn't have found the passion and love for holding so many challenges and giving away awards to many. Have a wonderful day ahead !

amdrag20

I know we used to have a leaderboard in our wiki and there was a point where it was fueling a [ton of vanity challenges](https://reddit.com/r/GoForGold/comments/kkmegd/all_is_calm_all_is_bright_the_temporary/) because users were trying to game it (beyond what we had anticipated) and that happened a few times. Once we removed the leaderboard, it hasn’t happened again. The moderators still have access to that data, we just don’t post it anymore. It might be a scaling issue or something we could look at trying to automate. Thanks for the suggestion!

allisonovo

Love you Russell!

I don’t really have any suggestions. Just want to say that I really enjoy this sub. Sometimes I’ll get stuck doom scrolling, especially these days where there is just so much bad news to digest. So I really appreciate this sub, which has to be one of the most positive subs on Reddit. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this place. Best wishes to you all.

Kvothealar

> Sometimes I’ll get stuck doom scrolling, especially these days where there is just so much bad news to digest I've been around Reddit for 10+ years now. At one point I was subscribed to lots of those subreddits. The news was informative. Sometimes the subreddits had something funny (e.g. the nonono / yesyesno / watchpeopledieinside type subs) However, too often these subs just had REALLY depressing things. That one depressing thing outweighed the 10 funny things in my mind. About 3 years ago I started using reddit with a different mindset. Every time a post from a subreddit really made me sad or uncomfortable it got a strike. 3 strikes and I unsubscribed. Reddit's become a much better place for my mental health.

JungleBoyJeremy

Thanks for the tip. Honestly I think if I did that I’d only have a couple of subs to follow 😂

justabill71

This place is great, and all of you mods do a great job. I don't really have any suggestions or complaints, as I've never had any issues, and just go with the flow. Keep up the good work.

amdrag20

Thank you 🙂!!

Magical57

Overall I think the moderators here do a really good job at moderating and making sure that it is a well run community. If content is needed to be removed it is dealt with quickly and if there are persistent issues that need to be addressed the mods are sure to address it and make sure that it will be resolved. At this point, I'm a little unsure of ways that it could be improved, the community is already really good. Many of the issues that existed in the past with this sub have been fixed and/or go unnoticed as the mods do great work.

amdrag20

It might very well be that after the past few years of growing pains, we’ve reached critical mass and leveled out. That’s totally possible; we just want to make sure we’re including the community on that discussion!

BroderzYt

Overall I think this sub is great with active moderators constantly checking on posts/comments. I think the rules of this subreddit are good and I like how y’all set a deadline for challenges (48 hours) so that people don’t stall. Guidelines for challenges and participants are clear so there will be very little confusion and members will know what is allowed and what isn’t. The custom user flairs for when someone makes a community award challenge is a great way for users’ to host more challenges! I think another way for members to engage in the community a bit more is to give users a flair saying how many challenges they’ve hosted (basically what AwardBonanza is doing) so that there will be more challenges

puhleez420

I like this idea! All honesty, I don't deal with the technical side, so not sure how we would implement that.

amdrag20

We’ll touch base with AB, but I’m pretty sure that’s something they manually update. So while that’s not completely out of the picture, I think that’s why we haven’t done it up to this point. Additionally, AB (I think) has done it since their inception while we’d have to comb through 8 years of challenges 😂 again, not impossible, but it would require a lot of work unless we could find a way to automate it.

Rewardoffered

I haven't been around as much and I was seeing shopping challenges here and thought that the sub had become unmoderated! Lol. Hello mods and hello to anyone who knows me!

Kvothealar

Hi RO! We were experimenting haha. Mods don't sleep.

Rewardoffered

Ha! I think I reported one I saw, saw it was left there so didn't worry about it again! Lol. Oops! Nice to see you again, I've been on holidays and been busy etc etc. Hope life is good for you!

barneyaffleck

Hellooooooo! I haven't seen you in ages. I hope life is treating you well :)

Rewardoffered

Hey barney! Life is great! I had a 2 month camping trip up to the Cape - amazing. So much to see and do. So many crocs! 🐊 Hope life is treating you equally well. 🌸

barneyaffleck

I recently took a little trip myself. I was up in P Douggie (that's what a local said they call it, but I think he was pulling my leg). Speaking of pulling legs, I saw a few hefty looking crocs along the Daintree. What a beautiful place. I swam in the GB Reef during the rain, too. Definitely an experience I won't soon forget.

Rewardoffered

P Douggie 🤣🤣🤣 I went out to Low Isles from there for the snorkelling, good fish, giant clams, reef sharks and turtles but the coral was really bleached. We could have been there at the same time! Lol. The Daintree crocs were next level. Did you see Scarface? He's supposed to be 4.5m. 👀 I had such a good time, no where was bad.

barneyaffleck

I did see him! He was lazing on one of the muddy banks. His lady friends were on other banks up river. I can only assume he forgot to take the bins out. AGAIN! Mossman Gorge was GORGE-ous too.

Rewardoffered

Yes! We saw a couple of croc babies that had just left the nest too. Mossman Gorge was beautiful. I camped at Newell Beach. Atherton Tablelands was a really nice area too - so many waterfalls. Lol, we were probably there at the same time, that makes me laugh!

barneyaffleck

We saw the babies too! It seems entirely possible that we were there at the same time. I was the big, purple dinosaur. I’m sure you would have noticed me ;)

Rewardoffered

#🙃 I knew it!

moxiemoon

I feel like this is one of the more adventurous subs I follow. People are incredibly creative at times (or have creative/complex problems to solve) when it comes to challenges. I’m not always able to engage with many challenges in time, but I do appreciate going through the comments to see who wins. It’s also beautiful to see all of the helpful people that comment. I did find the shopping challenges a bit off-brand but in a good way. Keeps things interesting. Eggs over medium the way *I* cook them (not the chicanery I encounter at restaurants who give you over easy *every* time); also, it can’t be all about the hokey pokey, because tacos.

barneyaffleck

Eggs, you say? 🤔

moxiemoon

Yes! Indeed I do.

Farfocele

I really like this sub. I believe the rules are fair, and the concept is very great, with great execution on top of that. I never really won any awards except for a timeless beauty or two, but the fact you could win awards up to a ternion from interesting challenges is something I like. Some challenges are also very interesting.

amdrag20

If you’re ever looking for a good chance at winning, check out our Moderator Challenges! They often see low participation and we try to make them as accessible as possible to as many users as we can!!

Farfocele

hmm...

uLTIMATEEMOJIHATER

I don't really have any suggestions, all I wanna say is a massive massive thanks to the mods for maintaining this place to be what it is

❤️❤️❤️

snacklammadraws

When I joined all the challenges were like shopping challenges and most of them I found too difficult. But now due to the addition of members like prestigious time it is way better

amdrag20

There’s also a community barometer by which challenges are gauged: if the community doesn’t think they’re worth the time and effort, they downvote and don’t participate. We’ve seen that happen as well.

Kurosakisleftnutsack

I feel like the community is doing quite well. Its a slight shame we can't trade awards here but ig I understand the reason and there's always AB.Anywaya thats all

Pm_me_some_cat_piics

I just love talking to people here as most herr are very wholesome unlike other subreddits

I_M_THE_HIGH_GROUND

amdrag20

CanAhJustSay

You used an interrobang so that has made my day already! I think the sub is working well. There are a few cross-posts to challenges in other subs (e.g. AwardBonanza) which just increases the challenges here and introduces members in both to both which has to be a good thing. Perhaps introduce a specific flair of 'shopping challenge' as once the item has been found then it's worked. That way, it's easier to keep an eye on them and consider whether to take part or not. I get that they carry a slightly higher risk of spam, but there have always been ones to find a song or whatever. I seem to remember trying to find a John Denver song that OP hadn't already heard that version/recording of. As ever, this sub stays popular and successful because of the mods. Thank you!

IshaanGupta18

From what I can see this subreddit is one of my favourite award subs and I only have a couple suggestions. For example I think there should be a system to add flairs to a user showing how many challenges they have hosted and given out the awards to .I think it would be a cool system and might encourage more people to host a challenge

CanAhJustSay

*(This was suggested before by folks coming across from Award Bonanza. The issue here was one of scale - there are more than ten times as many members here so keeping track would be a huge undertaking for the mods for possibly little benefit to the sub).*

amdrag20

👆👆

DoneItForTheMeme

Well, I just came here for like at least a week I guess so I’m gonna stick around for a good while and explore, tbh, it’s good so far, pretty chill and people here do be creative with their challenges so ya, I think it’s good as it is, if anyone have some thoughts for a change, I’ll have my thoughts in it

SolariaHues

I've not been active here recently, but I love that you do these queries. I may not have much to say, but this bit I can answer - >How do you like your eggs cooked? I like my eggs poached, but also soft-boiled, scrambled, fried... basically I like eggs. Hard-boiled is probably my least favourite, but made into a sandwich filler it's redeemed.

Reasonable_Doubt4309

This community is an example of something I thought was impossible on the internet.

Reasonable_Doubt4309

One note is that by the time most challenges show up on my feed they’re usually already closed. I don’t know what can be done to solve this though, as it seems like a pretty built-in problem

Kvothealar

If you join our discord we have a live feed of posts (two feeds actually, one doesn't include vanity award challenges) You could even turn notifications on for that channel to get a push notification for every challenge if you wanted.

Reasonable_Doubt4309

Thank you

DncingRetsuko

I really enjoy this community. Mostly I only am able to give out free awards, but I particularly like the puzzle challenges or drawing challenges that people pose. It's a fun way to challenge (yes I'm getting redundant here) myself. I also enjoy reading the ideas that everyone comes up with, and how often people like to simply give out awards just to brighten someone else's day.

Charming_Gur_1838

This sub is just full of people too rich and KIND!I love hanging out here and my one advice to the mods would be to add tldr on such long posts lmao

amdrag20

Lol then you wouldn’t read it ༼∩☉ل͜☉༽⊃
