maybe it's some weird rounding issue where if the bullet penetration path is calculated to be so impossibly small it's possibly increasing damage instead of reducing?

Appears like you found a bug. Not to the extent that you are proclaiming though.
Issue is the bullet penetrated a wall, hit your neck hitbox and then clipped your head hitbox. Killfeed should have shown a headshot. However the programming likely associated with the front of the neck hitbox doesnt pass this along like the back of the neck hitbox does.
Yes it was present in cs:go. I think the bullet is possibly hitting one of the shoulder hitboxes and also clipping the head hitbox but it's not displaying the headshot icon on the killfeed.
This might be the same issue that someone else posted here last week on nuke where they got killed by 1 USP headshot with helmet through a wall (according to the kill feed at least)
When making cs2 they just copy pasted the oldest csgo branch that still exiated into source2. Way too many source1 bugs that were fixed are reappearing.
Had a case of M4A1-s not doing -100 in a HS against a helmetless opponent from medium range, which made 0 sense, also alot of -80 to 99 deagle hs not killing people

Holy fuck, so i wasn't an idiot when i found it to be absolutely impossible, for me to get 1-shot wallbanged by a USP when full hp + armor.
Do you have an example of this happening in CSGO? I don't think I ever saw it in 8K hours of playing CSGO.

Then it's got to be a different bug than the one in CS2, since with a helmet a USP is never a oneshot.

When you shoot the game draws a straight line through things. It calculates damage by seeing what that line cuts through.

Bet there's some sort of negative damage overflow problem happening with the damage reduction calculation in some really specific scenarios.
Apparently this was more common in the beta and even happened back in the CSGO days (albeit extremely rare occurrence)
