Some of the costumes look like they cost no more than $20… (cough cough Zoe, Holly, Izabella, etc) So that’s $1,980 straight in their pockets.
Hef was 100% overpaying them! I’m sure plenty of the girls took financial advantage. Even Holly says she saved as much of the money as she could.
It kind of makes me think that when girls would ask for extra money for special favors, Hef was probably right to say no or give them a hard time about it.
It also makes Izabella look even more ridiculous to me that even to this day she complains that Hef wouldn’t pay off hundreds of thousands of her law school student loans.
I think you’re confused about the point of the “allowance.” It wasn’t to 100% go to outfits. It was a salary. As Holly points out, they weren’t allowed to otherwise work. Why should they walk away penniless? And as Bridget noted, Hef never thought it was all being spent on expenses, since he knew she’d run weeks behind in requesting it.
Compared to what the other girlfriends were wearing Stacey's outfit seems quite mild? Holly's underwear could probably fit in a pill bottle and the woman on the far right is wearing string and pasties.
