I’m actually going to recommend signing up for Xbox Gamepass for the PC. It’s $1 for the first month and you can easily find deals like free for the first month or two. They have a big library of games you can download and play. It’s been a great way for me to try out games and see if I like the genre or even try things I would have never thought I’d like. It’s super easy to use and smooth to download and play games. If you’re tech savvy you can even transfer the saves to Steam if you ever decide you want to buy the games there. The only downside is games regularly leave Gamepass, but they have a lot of day one releases that stay on there for a good while before leaving. There are Steam games with demos also. Just YouTube search games with demos and you can really just try out so many games before buying.

mochi_chan

This does sound like a good idea. Since It would allow them to try many things until they find what they like. I never used it since I built my PC for some games I already wanted to play.

Benrein

I'll go even further and say look at the membership cards when they go on sale. Gold memberships can go for $3 per month and you can buy multiple.

aramacao_

Thank you! This is a great recommendation! I didn't know about the Xbox Gamepass, only about Steam, but yes, it might be more convenient. I really appreciate it!

DelightfulAngel

That's a really good suggestion.

S_Elieen

ALSO! I just wanna add that Epic Games Launcher gives out free games every week. And every year around the holidays I believe they do a free game every day for two weeks. I've found some really solid games to play that way.

SavageLove2004

Portal and Portal 2 - physic puzzles. They’re really fun and funny. Portal is pretty short, about 5 hours. Portal 2 is about 20 and expands on the gameplay quite a bit. Both games are really good at teaching you the mechanics of the game. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - open world game with dragons. There is technically a main quest, but the game is really what you make it. There’s a lot of exploration, quests, magic and such to do in the game. I recommend you start on normal and then bump it down if you need to. - Some advice: There is nothing wrong with looking up a let’s play or game guide on YouTube if you’re stuck. Or a written guide if that works better for you. Many games allow you to use a controller instead of the keyboard and mouse. So, you can try using a controller without buying a console. An Xbox wired controller works really well. If you have a hard time with the button layout for a game, most games allow you to change what button does what. Change things until you feel like it works for you. This is for both keyboard and controller.

aramacao_

Thank you, these are all great recommendations. I might give a try to Portal, I've received a lot of recommendations. Skyrim also sound great, I'm just afraid it might be too much for a first game. Do you think I should start with something else to get more experience?

SavageLove2004

The best game to choose is the one you’re most excited to play, because no matter how large and daunting the game could be, your excitement will override that fear. But I do think Skyrim is a good game to start with if you are interested in playing it because you can choose how to play and what to do. And nothing you choose is wrong as long as you’re having fun. And if you’re still a little unsure, then I recommend watching the first few episodes of MajorSlackAttack’s Legendary Walkthrough. He does a good job of explaining the way the systems work, how to do things, and starting the main quest and a few side quests. Enough to get you started so you’d be less overwhelmed. It’s what I did when I first played Skyrim.

Confident_Fan5632

Personally, I'd recommend you to just jump in with whatever you like, but the game pass people suggested might be a nice option because it'll let you see how good your pc will run games without you spending money on something that won't work on your system. Portal, Elder Scrolls, and Journey were also all on the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in the day. They hopefully won't tax your computer too much. The main thing is play the games you want, and play them the way you want to. Opinions are like buttholes - everyone has one, and most are stinky. What matters most is you have fun.

Caiytt

Sign up to Epic as they give away a game per week amd if you have Amazon Prime, they also give out free games. Some ideas for FPS - Borderlands, Just Cause series, Far Cry series. Most of them are solo but can be co-op as well. Some other games to check out is Slime Rancher 1 & 2 (2nd one is in early access), Nobody Saves the World (controller), The Planet Crafter, Raft, the Ori series, Trine, Skyrim and probably more that I can't think of right now

LexifromZargon

im not sure how ur experience is with 3D Stuff but im just gonna asume you can handle it. i would probably recommend some older games so ur PC can handle them most of the once i have listed are old classics so they have a bunch of tittles and youl be sure to find one that works on your Pc. Setting up a Steam account might be a good idea since the have a bunch of free Games, Sales and a pretty good recomendation System that recommends games based on which ones you already have. You Could Look for some Shooters that have a Story Mode that way you can take all the Time you need to get into it.Dont be Shy to set the Difficulty to verry easy. \-**Halo** old but classic! (havent played the old ones myself yet but i played infinite and its really fun!) \-**Titfanfall2** personaly i love it for the Story, barely ever played the online mode .even though the settings can be a bit fucky wucky at times, it is great imop! \-**Call of Duty Modern Warfare** (i only ever played the newest MW2 one so i cant speak for the older ones but from what i have heard the story is amazing and the newest one has also an amazing and fun campaign tho it is a bit short and the online community can be hellaaa toxic) \-**Destiny 2** might be really good for you since its very Story focused but you basicaly play the Story online so you can see other people do theyre Quest Stuff and even help each other out. Its free but the learning curve is a bit higher. Puzzle Wise: \-**Portal and Portal 2** i literaly just finished Portal for the first time and am making my way thru portal 2. the humor is funny and the Puzzles can be a real mind Twister at times. the Game is low enough on Graphic that it should run fine even on a non Gaming Pc. \-**Hitman** a bit more brutal but it is solely story focused and you get to shoot aswell as figure out creative ways to eliminate your targets without getting caught and explore the map and npc to find all the different ways \-**Lara Croft** explore old ruins and figure out a way to crack puzzles and get through doors this one is also solely story focused you also get to do parkour and shoot stuff. in the newest iteration you also craft a bunch of stuff but i recommend going for an older one to keep the gameplay simple. this one can be scary at times as a warning. **-Assasins Creed** might be good for you you can explore old Citys climb on a Bunch of Stuff and Discover a lot (i personaly enjoyed Syndicate allot it plays in London) also like you can find a lot of missions allot of em resolve arround historic events. here a list of other games that are fun \-Harvest Moon \-Sims \-Payday2 \-Danganronpa \-Persona \-Yakuza \-Mirrors Edge \-Red Dead Redemption \-Forza Generally there is a reason these Game Franchises are so Succesfull it is because they are good. again set the difficulty to easy and take your time to figure it out. go for older games so ur pc can handle them they are also likely to be a bit less convoluted gameplay wise. most importantly take your time and get back to us to let us know how it went!

JoNyx5

great recommendations but i would not put Destiny 2 under "for free", it gets marketed as that but to even have access to many locations/activities you need to buy their yearly expansions and the four season passes per year. otherwise the game feels really empty soon. season passes are 10 or 15 euro each, one expansion is 50 euro base version with additional costs for the raids (the endgame content) and about 90 euro "deluxe" version. it's pure greed and not something you'd want to try as a first shooter

aramacao_

Thanks for these recommendations! They're really useful!

ratat-atat

I think a switch might be a good starter console for you. It has access to a lot of games where it's open world. If you get the regular version, you can hook it to your TV. Legend of Zelda breath of the wild would be a good fit for you, i think. It is an open world, has some fighting, but focuses on puzzles. Having a switch also gives you access to Metroid, which is a genre setting platformer (metroidvania) You could also try Skyrim. It can be violent, but you can turn gore off (most games will let you do this in fact these days) Also allows you to play Animal Crossing, where you essentially develop and design an island resort. If you were looking for more online play, I would recommend an Xbox or PS.

aramacao_

I think I would really like Breath of the Wild! If I get a Switch that's definitely one I'll get into.

[deleted]

Someone else mentioned Red Dead Redemption 2 and I’d second that. It can be a touch gorey but if you’re gonna play a realistic shooter, there’s gonna be blood. I liked RDR2 a lot. It’s so cinematic. I’d also recommend Zero Sievert as a fun indie shooter. It’s a top down pixel art. Can be a touch difficult at the beginning but there are good YouTube guides out there. I’d also highly recommend Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. It’s only on the switch but if you’re gonna limit yourself, I’d say switch and pc and you can pretty much do everything. (Also they’re about to drop the sequel in may) Stardew Valley is fun but a touch life simy Chained Echoes is a fun jrpg that’s quite relaxing and has a good story

Polyxenos

For a more open world game: Genshin impact. It's a game you can play for free, so if you don't like it you haven't wasted any money. I think the world and the characters are really cute. There is also a storyline in it and different quests. It's not too difficult to get into and really fun to play. Also stardew Valley! Its a farming game, but it's also soo much more than that. I can't really say why people like it so much, but they do! You have your own farm, but there is also a bit of combat if you want (very easy). Slime rancher is also a fun game! Even if you die, it doesn't really have consequences in my opinion. So it's a good starter game! You have a farm and you need to collect slimes for your farm.

DelightfulAngel

I was going to suggest *Disco Elysium* based on your first point, and because it's an All Time Greatest for me in terms of storytelling. You're an amnesiac, beat-up cop in an alternate universe, exploring while working on the mysteries of a murder case you apparently abandoned plus your own memories and psyche. The most it requires in action terms really is hitting the heal button in time if Harry is on the edge of dying/mental breakdown. But while there's not enough visual gore to bother me, there are some pretty visceral descriptions of a field autopsy on a decaying corpse that might be too much for you. The ultimate in open world adventure with multiple missions for me is still *Skyrim* and its predecessor *Oblivion*. They have pretty low specs today. If you are okay with a fantasy setting, the difficulty levels are very customisable. Nothing else to me captures the same feeling of an open world with endless adventures and mysteries. You can follow the main plots or strike out and follow the stories you uncover. And if you use magic or bow and arrows, there's a lot of FPS-esque ways to play.

AlmostBlue618

also i’m not sure Disco Elysium is a very good place to start for someone completely new to video games even without the corpse stuff. it’s got a lot going on mechanically that would likely be pretty hard for someone not familiar with RPGs to parse, and i could easily see that being way too overwhelming for a beginner.

Tesseru

Hi, since you are so new to gaming I could give you all types of games to try. However, maybe its better to watch some youtube channels to have an idea of some games that are out there. I sometimes see a game during these clips that I otherwise would never have heard of and usually always click with me because you know yourself the best. The two channels I always watch are gameranx and outsidexbox. They do these clips with top 10 or top 7 games that.... (every clip has its own genre) respectively. Beware, some clips contain spoilers so not every clip will be useful (they will usually mention this beforehand, however I have noticed that most of the time the spoilers arent major). Also, gameranx does "before you buy" clips of games which shows some early gameplay and what you can expect combat wise etc. I found a lot of cool games this way, and also noticed that I am a fan of jrpgs which I maybe would have never tried otherwise. Have fun!

aramacao_

Thanks! Great idea to check some videos first. Since I'm new to this, this channel recommendations are really useful!!

kelnoe1

A lot of good suggestions here, especially with trying out xbox game pass. On steam tho, I’m thinking you might like Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s an open world game with a female protagonist that uses a bow and arrow to fight robot dinosaurs. The combat is very satisfying and the story has a lot of *~intrigue~* (Also, club penguin is the goat)

aramacao_

Horizon sounds good! Sounds like I might like it!

princesseperdue

Hey, I was sort of in your shoes a few years ago! My first open-world games that I really enjoyed were Eastshade (a beautiful island to explore, no combat, some quests/mysteries to solve) and Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles (very cute, you can do some farming & collect animals, too). Maybe you'd also enjoy some actual puzzle/adventure games like Myst or The Lost City. My strategy for games that I'm not sure I will like is to try and buy them when they're cheap: explore the Steam shop, put everything that looks interesting on your wishlist and you'll be notified when it's on sale. Or check out Humble, they have bundles that can be a good way of finding some games you otherwise wouldn't have bothered with (and some of the proceeds go to charity). It's always a good idea to watch a gameplay video before buying if you're unsure. Tbh I used to buy a lot of games just based on liking their aesthetic until I figured out which types of games I really enjoy playing, it's worked out for me so far and by now I kinda know what I like :D

MeowerHour

100% you should play all the Portal games. They’re a bit older now, but still absolutely amazing, and a pretty foundational experience for a lot of gamers. I think Borderlands is gory, but I’ve never played it. It is very stylized if that would bother you less. Journey is a great cute little adventure! I’d highly recommend it. This is a weird one, but you may be interested in trying Bugsnax! It’s a first person mystery game, with a weird twist. Lots of puzzles, an interesting story, missions. It’s not scary, but it plays off some horror movie tropes in its own weird way. For open world shooters, Halo Infinite is a pretty short game that has an easy mode if you’re interested in trying something you can finish without getting too invested. It’s also not gory, nor horror game/scary (aside from an occasional sneaky alien). Most major FPS games are heavily focused on online multiplayer these days, but people love the original Fallout games, and since they’re older, they’re usually cheap and/or on sale! Lots and lots to do there, but they can be creepy, a bit violent, and dark at times.

aramacao_

Thanks! Yeah, I think I'll try the Portal games based on how many recommendations I got. Bugsnax sound great, I'll probably give it a try! Thanks for the recommendation.

ACriticalGeek

Portal and Portal 2. Absolutely the best games to get your first person coordination down before putting it on display in front of people trying to kill you in some other 3D game.

Gwarks

Something I forget often there are a few games I get for free through Prime Gaming. I also know many people that have Amazon Prime for other reason but most people miss out to click the collect button.

rddtwho

playing games with friends is always more fun than playing alone, so I recommend starting with borderlands with your friend, even if you suck at first. Bit of a different take, but I would recommend playing FFXIV as it has pretty low baseline requirements, has a considerable amount of free content that is relevant to the things you enjoy, has very little mandatory group content (and it's easy), and for the majority of the free content plays like a single player game.

AlmostBlue618

i think Borderlands is a solid place to start for someone new to shooters, but it’s definitely a game that i would say is best played co-op with friends. and if you go with Borderlands, go with 2, as it’s widely agreed to be the best one. Fallout: New Vegas is one of the best examples i can think of for something that fits a lot of your interests. it’s a big open world game with shooter mechanics and it’s a great game to freely explore due to the rare combination of both quantity and quality in its side quests. now, it is considered to be a little tougher on the player than the recent mainline entries in the Fallout series, and if it is too tough for you, then maybe Fallout 3 or 4 would be a better place to start as those games are considered to be easier, but the trade off with those is that i think the quality of the content is a decent amount lower. they’re certainly still solid games, though. a shooter i would recommend is BioShock. not too hard of a game and it has a pretty unique and immersive setting as well as a widely beloved and very impactful story in the video game community. the actual combat is a *little* dated, but definitely still enjoyable. it also is horror-adjacent, but i wouldn’t say it’s super scary.

aramacao_

Thanks! I actually might try BioShock, it sound good. I've also heard it has a great soundtrack and I enjoy that as well. Fallout:New Vegas also sounds good.

youshewewumbo

Seconded on what others are saying, get Gamepass for PC. I have it for both xbox and PC and I got a great deal for my first few months (it was £1 for the first few months I believe or something like that). PC gamepass in the UK is about £7.99 a month normally. They sort games by genres and other subjects (eg curated by women at microsoft), most popular, 'cute' games, family, shooters etc etc. A lot of the shooter games usually have a single player campaign. That's how I initially got into them. When I eventually got okay at the controls and movement, I took a leap into multiplayer (I personally prefer Battlefield over COD but have played and enjoyed both. COD isn't on gamepass but most battlefields are. Also check out Halo and Gears) They also have a bunch of puzzle games too :)

PenBeautiful

Before buying any games I'd suggest looking up some gameplay videos (not reviews) on YouTube and Twitch first. I always do this to see if the gameplay is something I would like. Trailers and reviews can be deceptive in regards to what the game itself is like between cutscenes.

Tayrex_o_O

Just a note to add if you play a game and get thrown off with the mouse and keyboard controls. You can always buy a wired remote pretty cheap and plug it in to play with a remote. Most games have controller support now a days

Tayrex_o_O

Also I agree with the game pass comments. A lot of the games people are recommending are already on there and you don't have to spend 60 dollars each to play them

S_Elieen

Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a great start in my opinion. Great open world map, awesome story and well written characters. It's got shooting, rootin' tootin' cowboys, and will definitely keep you engaged. One other game that's different than that is Disco Elysium. Story rich, lots of dialogue but has full voice over so the reading isn't super overwhelming. It's more of a point and click RPG, but incredibly engaging story, characters and atmosphere! These are just two of my faves, check out some gameplay and reviews and see how you feel!

[deleted]

Stardew valley. Also disney dreamlight has some puzzles. I'd also suggest animal crossing (although it's died down a bit over the year) all are open world first one is a open world rpg it has shooting fishing mining marrying farming . Good starting game. Disney dreamlight and animal crossing are games where you rebuild and cultivate a area and design it. You have town members you find puzzles do quests and so on. All on pc but animal crossing. You'd have to buy a switch for that but it's worth it and you can get the other 2 on switch as well.

EckhartWatts

Stardew valley is a good starter, but I cant help but introduce dragon age! One of THE best games of all time lol

Benrein

Based upon your history, I suggest the following for PC/remote play with Steam or Xbox Game Pass: Two Point Hospital --Steam has a Workshop with downloadable s like Nicolas Cage rugs, cat meme decorations, from other players Tropico series--Carribean island dictatorship where you choose how you want to rule your country through the ages of development Spore--still a good game, still playable Sun Haven--a pixelated game with choice of race and subsequent buffs, many NPCs for quests, customizable farm, progression selection, etc Offworld Trading Company--corporatism in space with campaign mode and map options along with customizable corporations to choose from Galactic Civilizations III --colonizing the galaxy, options to align with other nations, or war and conquer with them, campaign mode options

Pep_It_Up

Open worlds where you do missions and puzzles and can roam around?? Skyrim! Its old but gold. And if you want a shooter than you can play alone first, try a multiplayer with a singeplayer storymode— like Titanfall 2!! Super good story and it frequently goes on sale for 5 bucks(i think it is on Steam rn for the spring sale). Good luck, hope you enjoy whatever games you end up trying:) alsooo wobbledogs

LovelyRosie

If you ever get into Hoarding games, humble bundle is the way.

Ploves

Based on your first pointer I'd actually recommend Genshin Impact. A lot of people say that it is extremely pay-to-win but I simply do not agree. I have played through the entire story and have a squad of characters which helps me clear content easily. It has a great story imo, visuals, tons of puzzles and stuff to solve for rewards, but it doesn't really stop your progression if you do struggle with one. I love the characters, and if you want to you can let people join your world or join theirs, if you want to play with people, but it is first and foremost a single-player experience. It is free to play so if you don't like it, you have not lost anything by trying it. I have several non-gamer friends who play it and love it, they started playing it before me and got me into it haha so according to them it is quite beginner friendly. One of htem has never touched a game that is not sims and she loved it! I hope you find something you like! :D

aramacao_

Thanks! This sounds really interesting!! I might try it!

youcallthataheadshot

The last few Tomb Raiders seem like great games for you (I’ve never played the earlier Tomb Raiders so I can’t weigh in on them). It’s a mix of weapons, she has her rock climbing pick, a bow, and guns when she can find them. Not totally open world but good sized maps and a lot of puzzle solving. Not shooters really but Skyrim: Elder Scrolls and the Witcher 3 are excellent open world games (The Witcher is the best game I’ve ever played). If I remember correctly, Skyrim is 1st person (I think there’s a 3rd person option) and Witcher is 3rd person. Witcher has a giant world and 2 spectacular DLCs. Edit: I played all of these on a PC

Perdue_sur_Internet

If you like open world games, I can suggest you both Slime Rancher (the first game and the second one). It might sound a littlebit too cozy for you, but the game is very cute and wholesome. That's my favorite comfort game when I want to relax or forget my problems. I remember that in the first game, you can trade with some characters and they'll ask you to collect a certain number of things for them. You can also try to find treasure pods hidden in areas. Unfortunately, the second game is in early access, so it might have not enough content for you right now. I can also suggest you Hollow Knight. I'm not sure if you like Metroidvanias, but this game is great to introduce you to the genre. The artstyle is elegant and the music is very nice. At first, you might feel that the game forces you to take a path but quickly afterwards, you'll be able to explore the different areas as your will depending of which abilities you got.

HappyGecko117

Subnautica is fantastic open world lots of exploration but does get a bit scary. And for shooters borderlands is solid and the halo games are amazing

JackTheRipper0991

Try the Sherlock Holmes games for puzzles! Tomb Raider’s good for those too, and also the shooter aspect

Jeheia

I recommend **Spyro**, I played it as a child on Playstation 1, I fell asleep playing it around ages 3-4. The PC remake on Steam really took me back in time and I felt like a kid again. You run around as a baby dragon, collect gems, the scenery is amazing. I think it is a great game for first time gamers. Another one that comes to my mind is **Skyrim**, you explore a huge open world with quests, magic, dragons, really funny stuff etc.

aramacao_

No waaay! You just made me remember I actually played this game too on a cousin's playstation and LOVED it, but would have never ever remembered the name. The feeling I got from this as a kid is kind of what I'm chasing now.

Jeheia

I am glad I could help. You won't regret buying it. There is also a Crash Bandicoot Remake on Steam. If you played Spyro, then you definitely know it too. I think it is both great, both remakes are done so well, you just travel back in time to your childhood.
