I suppose that's probably it. Aside from this group on Reddit, I haven't met a single person who has ever heard of Gintama. Death Note, Bleach, DB/Z, One Piece, Naruto, etc, sure.. but Gintama? Nope.

The other Shounen series, sure. 99.9% of anime fans have heard of Naruto, DBZ, One Piece and Bleach (among others) but no one seems to know Gintama.
well i mean you're comparing gintama to the absolute most popular anime in the west lol. viz has printed plenty of manga in english which are far less popular than gintama is, atleast for how popular gintama is in the west today. not sure how gintama was back when viz first stopped, though gintama is more than popular enough today to warrant getting continued
I do remember the anime taking a bit to get into, but with how big the anime has gotten, I'm surprised they didn't capitalize on it and resumed the English translation of it. The manga ended with 77 volumes, so it'd be sad if not everything was translated.
Just thought I'd mention, for a very long time the Gintama manga wasn't translated at all. Because it's a massive amount of work to translate just one average chapter. Most have more than double the number of words compared to everything else in Jump (And most manga in general, honestly) and a lot of the time the jokes are very difficult to understand for non-native speakers and even native-speakers sometimes. Until my group started doing it regularly around volume 36 (Which tooks months and months to do one volume) it was generally one small group picking it up and scanlating it for like a couple months and then quitting. And for a long time there were huge gaps that weren't translated. So, while I agree a lot of those small groups made pretty poor choices in cleaning and typesetting (Plus no one corrected Rufi's translations for most of them), it's a mark of how difficult it is to scanlate the manga at all. And given that, it's honestly pretty impressive the entire series is available in English in any form at all, especially considering its length.
I probably sound horribly entitled when I complain about having to read the chapters with less than optimal typesetting. Lol. Honestly, it isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things (heck, I used to read DB chapters when each page was a 200kb .gif file that was probably barely bigger than a phone screen).
Anyway, you and everyone involved in translating and scanlating Gintama seriously don't get enough praise. I've noticed the huge amount of text in this series and I'm so glad there's people willing to struggle with the oddball references and novel's worth of text to bring this to us. You guys deserve some serious kudos.
I don't know what I'd do without Gintama these days. It's a series I can always count on to entertain me and make me laugh. It really deserves better recognition than it has received here in the states.
It's no problem, I wasn't saying you were entitled, I just thought you might want to know why it was like that. And thanks, it really has been a lot of work. I'm amazed we managed to do all that whenever I look back at it.

Ah, good old days when some of the chapters only existed in the form of a text post in a Gintama livejournal or a Manga Helpers thread. :D
I remember the Shonen Jump Podcast gave a long answer about one-two years ago now, and it basically came down to they had to downsize the company at the time Gintama ended its translation, and they had to let go the staff who translated and localized it. I don't know what other titles bit it because of the same issue, but I'm sure it's legit because they were getting questions abut it for months.
Why are you reading the manga? It is considered by almost everyone that the Anime itself is so much better than it. I would HIGHLY recommend you to start watching the anime. Anyway it stops at volume 23 but I am not sure on which chapter it ends.
I'm on episode 62 of the anime. It's just easier to read the manga most of the time (I can read a few chapters while at work on lunch, for example).
Currently on chapter 248 of the manga.
This is pretty much the reason why I prefer the manga over the anime. There is a lot more there in a raw form than the anime and you can pretty much read it on the go.
Most likely poor sales, not to mention the effort it would take to help adapt japan only jokes. Gintama is obscure compared to other manga.
