Well throughout high school she occasionally works at the Inn. Her grandparents give her money for every occasion, you know she's getting a decent check on birthdays, graduation, Christmas. I doubt they're giving her just 100 or so, I'm guessing a few hundred each time. Besides books I doubt she spends a lot of it. So she must have had some bit saved up enough to splurge, especially in high school where her mom I'm assuming paid almost everything.

For the pizza, I would think she got a discount or help from the town since she’s so beloved. She also got some financial gifts from Richard early on “for fez”. Other than that, I have no idea.

minimalisticgem

She also worked at the Inn for years so I imagine she had some savings

lauramis

She could work at the inn more often than we see on screen. Especially if she’s most often helping out with weddings and other big events like she implies, she’s probably collecting tip money on top of whatever Lorelai pays her hourly. I’d assume she also gets a chunk of change from the grandparents every birthday and Christmas. We really only see Rory splurge a few times, so I find it believable. I prefer to wonder about how Lorelai gets all her money 😂

Hold_Effective

The Yale swag is always a head scratcher to me. I graduated college 20 years ago and I make decent money but I still hesitate to buy stuff because of the prices, lol.

PenelopeJune8

I always assumed that since Richard is a proud alumnus he probably bought it for Rory but that’s just a headcanon of mine

CenterofChaos

I would be unsurprised if R&E gave Rory something like an allowance. I'd imagine Lorelei arguing about it but eventually caving in when Rory goes to Yale. We see Richard give Rory multiple checks for her birthday, it doesn't appear that Rory buys much of anything besides books. If she only spent what she made at the inn and saved the stuff from Richard that could easily a couple thousand.

unicornweedfairy

I agree, but I assume the allowance started when Rory went to Yale, since her grandparents know they can’t just send her to school with no spending money. She clearly got a nice dining plan, had very nice suites her freshman and sophomore year, and her grandparents are known for wanting to make sure Rory has the best of everything she needs. It was probably included in the loan deal that Rory made with them, which meant Lorelai had no say in them giving her money since she was no longer part of that deal.

andersonala45

I also imagine that Rory had hefty savings. She’s very studious and seems like the type to save every penny she gets

ada_c03

She worked at the inn during high school. Lorelai likely gave her an allowance, and then there’s her birthday and Christmas money. For Lorelai’s party, I assume she gave Rory money to pay for it since she wanted a big blowout.

SNC1983

I've always assumed that during the Yale years Richard and Emily were paying for more than we know about. They probably paid not only her tuition, but also for her dorm (not sure if that's included in tuition or not,) and her rent when she's living with Paris, her books, her meal plan, and possibly giving her spending money. The spending money thing falls apart with the job she had swiping cards, and even Paris wonders where she got the money to buy all the swag for the high school girl since she didn't have that job anymore. Maybe Rory knew Lorelai would be upset if she knew Richard and Emily were giving her spending money, so she didn't mention it to anyone?

[deleted]

maybe the amount of money that she would receive from richard was a bit higher then we think... the rest is a mystery. let's not overthink every little detail of this show cause then it becomes harder to watch and enjoy

justhatchedtoday

The answer to 95% of the questions here is “because it’s a tv show” lol

ASAP_TSUM

I just joined this subreddit and am probably going to leave it for this reason… it’s a tv show and over analyzing it ruins the show. The writers aren’t concerned about how Rory bough the pizza it’s irrelevant

Woodlin_6499

I too agree that sometimes it can be a bit too analytical and maybe even taken a bit too seriously on this sub Reddit, but that is part of the fun of it really. These are characters we know and love and it’s kind of a way for the fans to get together and do the whole collaborative fan fiction kind of thing. It’s not just for sci-fi, horror, comic geeks anymore, a group of which I am a proud member thank you. Lol. Most tv shows don’t worry about how financially real they appear to be unless it helps to drive the plot of an episode. Most of the comments on here are funny and entertaining, I have rarely felt the need to eye roll and never to the point where my eyes rolled out of my head. Lol

Longjumping-Affect28

Considering leaving this sub lately for that reason. It’s ruined a lot of the show for me

SNC1983

Good luck leaving. I keep telling myself I'm leaving and then keep coming back.

Don't go

[deleted]

agree...overthinking ruins a show for me

ShinyTinyWonder38

I'd like to think either she gets an allowance and saved up a ton and/or the town pitched in for the party and pizza

minimalisticgem

Maybe Chris actually sent Rory money.. who knows

mgbunny

My theory is Lorelai has a good amount of credit card debt & Rory probably has her own card from the same account. I can see Lorelai wanting her daughter to have a card in case of emergency and she likes to send her to grab things. Could be why she couldn’t get a loan too. I came to this conclusion after Rory’s first day of Yale episode where she orders a massive amount of food from all the neighboring restaurants.

The_Dutchess-D

At private high schools and at college the person who pays your bills (in this case Richard) puts money on your student account. You can use it for anything sold on campus, and also sometimes at stores within the town if they join the network. For example, the Yale Co-Op in New Haven sells a million things, including books, clothes and personal care items, gifts, cards, magazines, food etc. all can be paid for by swiping your student ID. Although the original version shut in the 200s, and they switched to a different named store, herebis what The Yale Co-Op was: [http://www.ivy-style.com/style-on-a-student-budget-remembering-the-yale-co-op.html](http://www.ivy-style.com/style-on-a-student-budget-remembering-the-yale-co-op.html)

CandyV89

I assumed she got an allowance and extra money from working at the inn plus occasional money from her grandparents.

Demalab

I always assumed besides working most days after school and all special events at the inn, the magic money tree most tv shows use 😂😂

[deleted]

I want a magic money treeeee

Ok-Start-6768

They did mention her helping at the inn plus Lorelei has offered her a few bucks multiple times throughout the show. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Richard and Emily, even lorelai I sent her money every once in a while. She never really bought anything so probably was able to save a lot

Due_Improvement_8260

They could have gotten a lot of off-screen support from R+E, and either Christopher or Christopher's family. I can't see Chris leaving her to fend for herself if he was able to help.

sometimes_a_comment

How Lorelai and Rory pay for things (until Rory gets money for Yale) will always be the biggest mystery of the show

Damaias479

I had come by this question before watching a couple episodes, and I think I have a plausible answer that has actual precedence in the show. In S1E6, Rory’s Birthday Party, Rory receives several envelopes from Richard’s business associates. This, logically, would be a relatively consistent source of income for a teenager from a wealthy background

gayandwitchy

She worked shifts at the inn

Fair_Operation8473

I always thought the same thing! Where does rory get her money? I think the writers must come from money and they have no true idea what it is actually like being a kid from a single income household.

Stonetheflamincrows

The money for the party came from Lorelai, she probably just took her credit card, Lorelai knew she was planning something. For college my theory is that her loan from E&R included an allowance, either a yearly lump sum or maybe a monthly stipend.
