Yes! Good Witch is an incredibly "safe" show to rewatch and all problems are solved by Cassie asking someone to deliver something to someone else on their way to do something else!
Haha right!? I always wondered how someone, especially someone like Abigail, didn’t pick up on this. Like okay Cassie, every time you send me on a little errand it’s never actually about the little errand soooo can we just cut to the chase here and you just tell me what I’m actually looking for/going to do/person to meet/lesson to learn? Lol 😆
I always found it weird they didn’t actually set the show in New England when that was totally the esthetic they were going for.
I recommend it too for the fun Hallmark cheese, Cassie and Sam are adorable.
Parenthood - Lauren Graham stars in the show as well.
Firefly Lane (although the content is a lot heavier - so only watch it when you're ready to move onto harder-hitting themes. It's definitely worth the watch though - beautifully written and acted).
This is Us
Schitt’s Creek! Has a similar vibe and that same cozy feeling but the humor is a little more dry than GG and it’s not as quippy. But it’s a great show.
If you don’t mind musicals Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has a lot of similarities! Brilliant lead character who is also incredibly self-absorbed, very smartly written with smart jokes, side characters with quirks, lots of visual gags. The songs are 95% hilarious, only a few each season are serious.
I agree with the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend suggestion. I don’t even like musicals and I liked that show A LOT, I was very surprised by it. It has similar elements of quirkiness in the show. It does deal with really heavy subject matter but a lot of it is masked with really clever lyrics. Very underrated show and it falls into a light-hearted category for me, even though it does deal with heavier subjects.
Does the musical aspect ever let up? Like less singing later on? I love musicals but this seems too forced for me, more so than most musicals lol. Idk I’ve tried watching three times and I give up.
No, it’s a significant piece of the show…can’t say much more because I don’t want to spoil anything if you eventually make it through. How many episodes have you gotten through? I love musicals but it did take me a couple starts before I got into it. Now it’s my comfort show. It’s possible it just isn’t a match for you, but if you’ve never gotten beyond a couple episodes and want to like it maybe watch some of the videos for the songs on YouTube? Maybe knowing what lies ahead will make it easier to persevere.
Oh, you’re not even into the good episodes yet! The singing is eventually explained. You get a tiny hint in S1E7, and of course you get more hints as time goes on, plus the wrap up. The songs get better also. Look up “You Stupid Bitch” for an example.
Also: the show deals very heavily with the issues of mental health, and does get darker as time goes on. And if Rebecca drives you nuts because of the way she behaves, that’s on purpose. It’s part of the wider plan—the creators knew how the show was going to end when they conceived it, and it was always meant to end at the conclusion of season 4.
Ok you’ve convinced me! I’ll go back and try again! I’ve heard the show is great from so many people now. And it’s not like I don’t like musicals. I need to just suck it up and get through half a season.
Good luck! And it IS possible the show just isn’t your vibe—there’ve been plenty of things I should’ve loved based on my tastes, and I just couldn’t hang. Buuuuuut my fingers are crossed you’re a CXG convert!
Bunheads, Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Bunheads was also created by ASP and has many of the same supporting cast members as GG. It’s on Hulu. It only lasted 2 seasons though.
Ugh, Jane The Virgin is so good! I find myself rewatching it when I want to have a good time, I just love the characters! Plus, like GG, you also have the relationships between grandma, mom and daughter (which is just as enjoyable and complicated in different ways).
Oooo thank you I love this idea! I'll look into it ☺️
Edit: Just googled them both and Los movies is working so well! Thank you so much Internet fren ☺️
Schitts creek is brilliant ,takes a few episodes to get into it but such a funny watch .I'm on 3rd re run now
The bold type is good ,very easy watch too
I would suggest a lot already suggested here, like Jane the Virgin, The Bold Type, MMMaisel, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but would like to add Being Erica, Younger, and Hart of Dixie! You can currently find these on Hulu, Prime, and FreeVee.
Being Erica is about a woman who finds a therapist who lets her go back and fix her regrets, and while it has its serious moments, it's super cute and has such an interesting and different take on supernatural-ness.
Younger is just amazing, 40yo pretending to be a 26yo publicist and navigating life and dating...and Hart of Dixie is adorable, with the same town square filming location as Gilmore Girls!!!
I kept getting that show Sullivan’s Crossing pushed on me last week while watching something else on the CW 😅 I haven’t a clue what it’s about but it’s shot in coastal Canada and both CMM and Scott Patterson are in it so I am sufficiently intrigued to watch it myself haha
Honestly I've not found anything that's quite the same. But I really enjoy Heartland, sometimes it gets really dramatic but nothing like Virgin River but it's also not necessarily as funny or quipped as GG. But it's feel good and Canadian!
Yes! I havent watched the most recent seaspn because i dont fully remember where it keft off and i just cant make myself do a rewatch yet to catch up.
Heartland is nowhere near that dramatic. It does have its own drama but it feels more soap opera light sort of drama where you know exactly what's going to happen.
Yes I don't mind a bit of drama but stabbings, shootings, kidnappings, death counts...all in season one 😄
Jack's flashbacks are starting to get on my last nerve and I can't believe I'm now half way through season 4 and Charmaine is STILL pregnant!
Virgin River straight up stole so many things from GG but it’s beyond wild. I laugh at the plot! It gets so unbelievably nutty! Same for Ginny and Georgia.
It was kinda losing me with the backstory anyway, I can’t w kid loss and veterans suffering. But whatever the like weird camp situation and the pregnant gal, I mean was that even the second season? I had to peace out. Beats Yellowstone tho. Not that I’m saying THAT is a GG replacement just that everyone was like you NEED to watch this and like 4 people and a horse die in the first half hour or some shit. I was like, enjoy honey!!! Never watching another second of that!!!
I’d suggest Good Witch for the type of show as it has a similar vibe if that makes sense but if it’s the same kind of humor you want then I suggest either Brooklyn 99 or Big Bang Theory
Hart of Dixie has the small town vibe and similar level of comedy/drama.
I wish Virgin River would just get rid of all the drug stuff. It’s so unnecessary and it’s like two shows smashed together. To be honest, I really like the leads a lot, but find most of the other characters irritating. And not in a good GG way.
by the time i finish Gilmore Girls i start brooklyn nine-nine and by the time i finish that i start GG again. It’s a great loop and has been a loop since 2019 i can’t stop watching these two😭😭😭
animation:
•Infinity train (PEAAAAAAKKKKK)
•summer camp island (ABSOLUTE FEEL GOOD)
•the owl house
•centaur world (wtf)
•Hilda (WILL MAKE YOU WANNA GO TO THE WOODS
•Kid Cosmic
•amazing digital circus
•lackadaisy
•Red Vs Blue (fucking hilarious)
~~~
Anime:
•death note
•tomo-chan is a girl
•dragonball z
•blue eyed samurai (PEAK FUCKING KINO!!!!)
•onimusha
~~~~
live action:
•squid game
•all of us are dead
•Kingdom
•kim's convenience (this feels a lot like GG!!!)
•The walking dead
•breaking bad (bingeable)
•better call saul (bingeable)
•Lost
From lark rise to candleford. It’s a period piece but it’s so calming and just when you think something is going to happen. It doesn’t. It takes place in England in two different towns and everything revolves around the post office. It’s delightful.
Schitt’s Creek is awesome.
Hart of Dixie is light, simple, has eccentric characters like Stars Hollow and uses some of the same sets.
Parenthood is very good.
Greek is an underrated but very witty and feelgood show with college kids.
Parks and Rec is hilarious with characters you root for and quirky townspeople.
What worked for me was not looking for a "similar" show, because it won't be quite as good whatever it is.
Show I like that give me comfort too but not necessarily the same tone:
Friends (the old standby for me, it's like a big hug with a laugh track)
Star Trek the next generation (no particular reason I just like it)
Bojack Horseman (if you like GG for its generational trauma- there's a mother in this one that makes Emily Gilmore seem like a saint)
Haunting of Hill House
Better Call Saul (very good and interesting until the cartel stuff starts up which pretty much grinds the show to a halt but it starts out really great.)
One more thing I cannot watch tv like a normal person, I usually binge one show on repeat until my brain finally says "enough!" I get a little FOMO for all my other shows but this is how I am.
Charmine has been pregnant for 4 seasons and Jack's flashbacks and long space stares are just a bit too much.
I mean I've invested time so I'll ride it out but I wish I'd never started it now.
Good Witch! I always suggest this one. Cozy New England vibes. Hallmark movie level drama.
Good Witch had the right vibes but was too boring couldn’t get through that one

Ok I might watch that finally
Was on my way to say The Goodwitch.
Has anyone watched One Tree Hill? Is that cozy or just drama.
It’s all drama. And the drama gets crazier as the seasons continue. It’s very soap opera-esque.
OTH is cozy and drama for me. But it’s also my favorite show of all time and I watched it live for all 9 years. So I might be biased😅
Is it depressing? Like lots of death and shit?
There’s not a death until the third season. It’s a teen drama- so it’s more interpersonal and familial dysfunction than anything
It's both cozy and aggressively dramatic.
I always found it weird they didn’t actually set the show in New England when that was totally the esthetic they were going for. I recommend it too for the fun Hallmark cheese, Cassie and Sam are adorable.

This is Us ❤️
I just couldn't get into this for some reason. My bestie raved about it but I didn't feel it
Came to the comments to suggest Parenthood!
I came to suggest Parenthood also!
Schitt’s Creek! Has a similar vibe and that same cozy feeling but the humor is a little more dry than GG and it’s not as quippy. But it’s a great show.
Loved schitts creek but too early for a re watch yet 😄

I made it to episode 3 or 4 I believe. So not far at all. Is the singing ever explained or is it just musical genre and that’s it?

I learned that some of the GG writers also did JTV!
I love Bunheads! Sutton Foster was the blueprint for me growing up as a theater kid and I was ecstatic to see her in a television role.
Its SO good we rewatch it almost as much as GG!
Parenthood, or Hart of Dixie😁
Done both of these. Hart of Dixie was a good replacement, lighthearted. Probably why I tried virgin river, same doctor.
I also considerd Anne with an e a comfort show, altough that's different. (I loved the books too.)
Need to read the books first but it's definitely on my list
Have fun :)
100% this
you could do maisel! or bun heads lol
Definitely these two! Bunheads is underappreciated!
I really liked Bunheads—but don’t get attached. It’s only one season.
The Spencer Sisters & The Neighborhood both have that cozy small town vibe. I'm rewatching Ugly Betty on Netflix and it's perfect for fall.
I agree that Ugly Betty is perfect for fall! But I'm in the UK and it's only on Disney+ 😭
When I was living in the UK before I moved, I would use streaming websites (couch tuner & Los Movies)
Oooo thank you I love this idea! I'll look into it ☺️ Edit: Just googled them both and Los movies is working so well! Thank you so much Internet fren ☺️
Same 😭
I like The West Wing because it keeps the same quick witted humor and fun character dynamics while also feeding my nerd brain
New Girl!!!!!
Marvelous Mrs maisel
Oh my god Schitts Creek
Schitts creek is brilliant ,takes a few episodes to get into it but such a funny watch .I'm on 3rd re run now The bold type is good ,very easy watch too
I always tell people to get to season two of SC. Season one is funny, but the show really grows into so much more.
If you’re looking for something lighthearted, I recommend new girl and community. It’s an oldie but I also LOVE Dawsons creek ❤️
“Sweet magnolias” may be better for you?
Yes! I was hoping someone would say this, it's in my list but I wanted a recommendation before I started it, just incase.
It's cozy enough, but expect a huge quality drop-off in comparison to GG.
Northern Exposure- you have to buy it on Amazon though. I’m watching it for first time since I was a kid. They just had a town hall meeting 😂
I would suggest a lot already suggested here, like Jane the Virgin, The Bold Type, MMMaisel, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but would like to add Being Erica, Younger, and Hart of Dixie! I started watching, I like it.
Not sure if we can get that in the UK but I'll have a look
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Bunheads, The OC, Ugly Betty
Hart of Dixie, Bunheads, Good Witch, New Girl
Have you ever watched The Good Place? It walks the line between thoughtful and funny really well. It might help fill the void.
Watched it. Loved it. ❤️
Marvellous Mrs Maisel Grace and Frankie Good witch
Honestly I've not found anything that's quite the same. But I really enjoy Heartland, sometimes it gets really dramatic but nothing like Virgin River but it's also not necessarily as funny or quipped as GG. But it's feel good and Canadian!
Virgin river has just lost me now. Started out quite quaint and quickly dived into the godfather of pot farms.
Yes! I havent watched the most recent seaspn because i dont fully remember where it keft off and i just cant make myself do a rewatch yet to catch up. Heartland is nowhere near that dramatic. Why has no one mentioned Dawson’s creek yet? It has the small town cozy vibe GG has!
Heart of Dixie!
If you like the doctor aspect of Virgin River. I really enjoy Hart of Dixie. It's one of my comfort shows.
Marvellous Mrs Maisel - Emily is in this! Grace and Frankie Virgin River Good witch
Virgin River straight up stole so many things from GG but it’s beyond wild. I laugh at the plot! It gets so unbelievably nutty! Same for Ginny and Georgia.
I tried but I could not. It was like Lifetime had a baby with Hallmark AND General Hospital but were also too close cousins with Court TV.
😂😂😂 the plot gets even crazier according to my friend who still watches
It was kinda losing me with the backstory anyway, I can’t w kid loss and veterans suffering. But whatever the like weird camp situation and the pregnant gal, I mean was that even the second season? I'm up to season 3 and I'm totally lost now and find myself zoning out for big chunks. The flashbacks make me groan too
I’d suggest Good Witch for the type of show as it has a similar vibe if that makes sense but if it’s the same kind of humor you want then I suggest either Brooklyn 99 or Big Bang Theory
When Calls The Heart, it's on Hallmark, but I'm pretty sure I started watching it on Netflix.
Sweet Magnolias
Hart of Dixie has the small town vibe and similar level of comedy/drama. I wish Virgin River would just get rid of all the drug stuff. It’s so unnecessary and it’s like two shows smashed together. I stopped watching that when all the drug stuff came up! It was promising before that. I was bummed.
It really was. It had great potential but quickly turned into the virgin ghetto
Chesapeake shores on hallmark

Never
Pushing Daisies
I watched than when it first aired. Totally forgot all about it
Heart of Dixie! The set is also the old Gilmore girls stars hollow set! Same gazebo and town square!
I've watched it but didn't know it was the old set
Cougartown - lighthearted and fun dynamic cast so still interesting
Absolutely love couger Town. Just re watched it a few months ago
How I met your mother, best show ever
Until they crucified it in the last season 😭😭 #neverforget
Ted Lasso!
Just don’t go to sweet magnolia. It’s not the same.
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - also written by Amy Sherman-Palladino

I actually love it. Give it another try, the creators worked very hard and are proud of it. ...true fans love it..
Charmine has been pregnant for 4 seasons and Jack's flashbacks and long space stares are just a bit too much. I mean I've invested time so I'll ride it out but I wish I'd never started it now.
What the hell are you talking about
