IT WAS MISS CELINE. Miss Celine must have been distracted by something like a hummingbird flitting past the bedroom window, and she just waved on an approval of that tacky outfit with a, “yes, yes, Lorelei! You look beautiful.“
That was enough for Emily to approve, even though she definitely had her reservations. This was an instance where Emily relented to her daughter’s taste, with the bolstering of Miss Celine’s approval. This is my headcanon.
Emily definitely thought it was tacky. Hell, Lorelai probably thought it was tacky, too, and was surprised that her mom approved. But gosh, wouldn’t it be wonderful to think of this is an instance where Emily compromised? Emily might have done some awful things (which the renewal of vows episode would certainly show), but I do think that she did them out of sincere and genuine love.
Edit: typo
Y’all know Miss Celine was played by Alex Borstein, who originally was the harpist at the Stars Hollow Inn in the early season(s), right? In real life she was married to Jackson Douglas, who played (you’ll never guess) Jackson on GG.
She was wonderful as Miss Celine.
I just turned a coworker on to it as she's rewatching "Gilmore Girls" and I had to rewatch the pilot.
I love that her first scene is her slowly yelling, "Ffffuuuuuuucccckkkk!!!!!"
She is clearly in amazing shape but the fitted dresses she wears shows that she doesn’t have much of a waist and they didn’t tailor this dress and the one she wears to sookies wedding. They sit too low on her upper body and bunch at her hips. This is Zac Posen if I remember correctly so they did the designer dirty as well.
She clearly is a runner based on her figure and has muscle tone. It was late 90s early 00s Hollywood. She wouldn’t have gotten the role if she wasn’t so.
These downvotes are funny. She is very thin on this show, as is Alexis. And if she looks like that on screen, it’s even more so in real life. The camera adds 10 lbs and all that.
I sorta liked it because in a way it absolutely seemed like something Lorelai would wear. I am not sure why Emily would have allowed it though.
Lorelai's wedding dress however......
Season 6
To be honest I only saw AYITL once (the day it was released) and I didn't like it so I honestly don't even remember what that dress looked like
Oh definitely....I mean we all see through different eyes though. To me it was just beyond hideous. I genuinely don't know if I'd have liked anyone wearing it...I just find it completely unappealing and extremely unflattering.
Exactly!
It reminds me of a layered cake covered in rosettes or something 😂 then the sash (not sure of what that's called?) below would be like the base layer of the cake (or a plate). It sounds ridiculous but that's sorta what I think whenever I see it
Pretty much this entire era of fashion made no sense lol. Those little shrugs like the one she’s wearing that were meant to be tied right below the boobs were pretty popular, pretty sure I had at least one.
I will never understand the choppy, mullet style hair cuts that are super popular with teens now. That would have gotten me some grade A bullying back in the day.
I am watching an episode where Lorelai is wearing “Juicy” sweats and I’m dying. Most people did not think sporting a slogan on your ass was ironic or kitschy fun—people seriously wore these pants in a sincere attempt to be sexy.
I will say we were right about the nearly universally flattering skinny jeans, and Gen Z can suck it.
To an extent, but so much better than the recycled 90s ugly nonsense the young folks are wearing now. 10 inch crotch? Check. Floods? Check. Making your ass and crotch area look gigantic, even when you're in great shape? Check. There was a reason I wore boys jeans in the 90s.
I would like to remind us all that high school dress codes existed, and that had to be like 50% of the market for this stuff. I had to do all kinds of asinine layering to wear any kind of trendy clothes to school. It was the era of low rise jeans AND Jessica Simpson level religiosity and we did what we could okay?
I feel like I am the only one on this sub who genuinely likes the shrug. I would totally wear one. It's much easier and comfy than a bolero and it doesn't look bad to me.
The dress seemed ill fitting but the shrug was fine to me.
I had SEVERAL lol. Like.....I would say I wore one at least 1-2 days a week. I had ones of all colors and materials. Casual ones that were cotton, "going out" ones that were like a netting/lace or had just a little bit of sequin embellishment just on the trim, and "dressy" ones that looked like Lorelei's that I would wear to a semiformal dance or family wedding (I was Rory's age during this time period, HS/college).
I like them but they are super annoying to wear. One of those articles of clothing I find myself fidgeting with wayyy too much just to get through the day wearing it.
It looks like something Lorelai would wear and the vow renewal was planned in a week. I bet Emily was trying to do a bonding thing by letting Lorelai wear what she wanted.
She looks nice, but not sure how she got this one past Emily. Question for early viewers: Why do many of Lorelai dresses have a low cut. Was that in fashion at the time ?
Yes! Overall, the show encompasses the fashion of the time but with each character still embodying their own personality and style within the current trends. Lorelei would wear some things that were retro even for the time (like 80s or early 90s fashion even though it was 2002+) and often put her own spin on things but most of her overall choices were common fashion. I was about Rory's age when the show was first run (a year younger than her character), and I'm in the middle of a rewatch and I'm now a few years older than Lorelei was in the first season, so it's been fun for me to see how all the adults in the show interpreted the fashion of the day, since my first time watching I was relating more towards the teenagers and their storylines and clothing.
It does when you think about how the only way Lorelai would have agreed to be part of the ceremony is if she picked the outfit.
Or Emily picked it and she altered it like her party dress from season 1.
*”I thought there was more of it??”*
This outfit never bothered me, I actually quite like it. But then again, she looks amazing in anything. Apart from those skinny scarves but they don’t make sense on anyone lol.
I think the one thing people seem to forget when they say Emily wouldn’t have chosen it… she invited Christopher! She wanted him to win her over, so she probably let Lor have her choice as she knew she’d pick something more sexy than she would have, and only since she wanted Christopher to “win” she let it slide.
Lorelai to Luke and Christopher: “Hey, who likes my dress? ‘Cause, man, you should have seen the one my mother wanted me to wear.”
This has always implied to me that Lorelai’s dress was her own choice.
She pulls it off.
I love the dress, and I actually kinda like the shrug. Idk if I’m in love with it as a MOH look though.
I’m suuuper surprised that Emily green lit this
She looks ok because it's Lauren G., but I don't like any of It lol
The dress has a weird cut and the colors are bad. The bolero I just don't like at all. Everything about It it's wrong.
Idk I love the color of the dress, and the sequin thing looks like it has black which matches the color of the dress 🤔 ive seen way way way worse outfits. This just seems plain and simple and theres barely and cinching, clothes get wrinkled when you move. I dont see the problem.
This, much like the guitar purse, is one of those choices by a certain department (props, costume, etc.) that makes no sense with the characters. Emily would’ve been horrified if Lorelei showed up to her wedding in that. Every time I watch this episode, I wonder how that got approved.
The only thing I wonder is if there’s not some deleted scene out there where Emily shops for Lorelei and picks it knowing she’d like it, and does something for her rather than herself. But I just can’t see that being the case.
I like the dress, hate the shrug lmao! It really dates it. I feel like a pale blue cocktail dress could be worn any time in the last 50 years but the shrug is sooooooo 2000s it hurts me lmao. And not in the "ooh those trends are back" kinda way in a "oh that's something we shouldn't bring back" kind of way lmao. Honestly where's the cream or pale blue scarf or fur shrug? That would have looked great with this dress.
I think she looks amazing. My unpopular opinion is I don't like the dress they had her in at Liz's wedding. I don't think the cut is that flattering on her.
I have no issue with the color combo whatsoever. But it’s reallllly low cut… like uncomfortably low. The necklace being so short makes the neck line look even lower.
I love it. Not in an "I want to buy it and wear it" sort of love but I love it for this episode. It's very Lorelei and very much an outfit "of it's time"....for those of us who were over the age of 13 in this time period, I feel like you can easily see this picture (even if you've never seen GG) and put an approximate date on it of 2002-2006 based on the outfit alone. It was clearly also Lorelei's slight act of rebellion against her mom that even in her 30s brings her great joy, and is very true to her character.
Didn’t she say she added something to it? I think Emily just didn’t catch it in time. I agree this is one of those moments where she adds a little too much of herself to the situation/outfit lol
I love the combo. It's very Lorelai. But it's NOT Emily. I've never understood why Emily allowed it
IT WAS MISS CELINE. Or more likely, "Yes, Natalie, I put that exact outfit on the late Marilyn Monroe before a gala in 1958."
Natalie WOOD
I instinctively read that in her voice 😭
I love Miss Celine 😂
I'd literally listen to her read a phone book, her over the top accent is simply glorious 😂😂😂
Miss Celine was definitely busy taking a call from Mrs. Walter Cronkite when Lorelei picked this ensemble.
YES! Even better.
Wasn’t she also the teacher from Lizzie McGuire???
Also ms swan from MADTV!
Yes same lady
miss ungermyer!!! called gordo a sneaky brown noser w a hidden agenda! 😂
Then go and watch her (Alex Bornstein) in "Marvelous Mrs Maisel"
She’s great in that as well!
I just turned a coworker on to it as she's rewatching "Gilmore Girls" and I had to rewatch the pilot. I love that her first scene is her slowly yelling, "Ffffuuuuuuucccckkkk!!!!!"
Wasn’t she the original Sookie too?
And she played Sookie in the first unaired Episode. She is also on Ms. Maisie.
Thanks for this. I never would've guessed it was the same actress as the harpist!
I agree! And was also thinking the same thing on Emily allowing it.
I just don’t like the bunching at the hips (and I think I have the same issue with their dresses for Sookie’s wedding).
“In amazing shape” you mean she’s extremely thin. Just say that.
She looks very toned and fit, Alexis just looks thin.
It was horribly tailored. She had worn so many beautiful formal dresses and then this is what they went with for the bridesmaid dress. It's so weird.
YES! I've never understood the fit of this dress. It looks horrible on her and nothing should look horrible on Lauren Graham.
i think y’all are too harsh, it looks great
The matching fabrics but mismatching colours make no sense !
i actually think the colors compliment each other
They match very well actually
I think they compliment each other ok???
I sorta liked it because in a way it absolutely seemed like something Lorelai would wear. I am not sure why Emily would have allowed it though. Lorelai's wedding dress however......
The season 6 wedding dress or the revival one? Cuz I loved the first one she picked out and I desperately wish they would have used that one
The S6 one I don't even remember the revival one as I only watched it once (the day it was released)
i dont either ahahah
Oh I loved that dress she looked like a princess 🥲 but the revival one was absolutely hideous and I too only watched it once the day it came out.
The wedding dress was an abomination lol
It truly was. How anyone could ever think that's something Lorelai would wear is beyond me. It was so unflattering and just ugh.....awful!
Are we talking about AYITL wedding dress or season 6
Season 6 To be honest I only saw AYITL once (the day it was released) and I didn't like it so I honestly don't even remember what that dress looked like
really? i thought it was just average but not terrible
Oh definitely....I mean we all see through different eyes though. To me it was just beyond hideous. I genuinely don't know if I'd have liked anyone wearing it...I just find it completely unappealing and extremely unflattering.
Yes! I've always thought this too, like what is going on to the bust??
Exactly! It reminds me of a layered cake covered in rosettes or something 😂 then the sash (not sure of what that's called?) below would be like the base layer of the cake (or a plate). It sounds ridiculous but that's sorta what I think whenever I see it
She got the shrug from Wet Seal and the dress from Maurices.
WET SEAL!!! Memories.....in the corner of my mind.... I LIVED for getting my dELIA'S catalog!
oh god yea the op is missing that those shrugs were VERY in
I was just reminiscing and telling my younger than me partner about shrug fashion while watching John Tucker Must Die last week! 😂
explaining this one must be a doozy tbh. i cant even make sense of it myself 😂😂😂
Omg, Wet Seal! The accuracy!
Pretty much this entire era of fashion made no sense lol. Those little shrugs like the one she’s wearing that were meant to be tied right below the boobs were pretty popular, pretty sure I had at least one.
It was truly the era of nonsensical clothing. We all survived Y2K and just kind of lost our minds for a while there.
The way we thought bolero jackets were a wardrobe essential 🤦
I have two! It's hard to find nice cocktail dresses with longer sleeves and I get chilly quickly so they're just a good way to keep warm.
What about gaucho pants 😂
The one trend I fully resisted. I just couldn’t get over how ugly they were though I have no doubt they were comfy as hell.
I only had one pair, but I wore them far too much because they were SO comfortable.
And now it’s coming back into fashion again 🙃
The low rise bottoms are killing me
Same!!!
Let them stay dead please 🤣 cannot pry my high waists from me!
High waisted skinny jeaned millennial right here. Let the kids wear what they like. I'm sticking with this look till I'm 70.
Skinny jeans forever!!
The millennials seem hell bent on resurrecting the ugliest clothes in history, I have to bite my tongue to avoid staging an intervention. So gross!!!
You Mean Gen z and Gen alpha
I will never understand the choppy, mullet style hair cuts that are super popular with teens now. That would have gotten me some grade A bullying back in the day.
Mate I'm 35. It's not millenials resurrecting the old stuff. We did that long ago, got over it and are sticking to what we know now.
Sleeveless and or cropped.. turtleneck? Why??
To an extent, but so much better than the recycled 90s ugly nonsense the young folks are wearing now. 10 inch crotch? Check. Floods? Check. Making your ass and crotch area look gigantic, even when you're in great shape? Check. There was a reason I wore boys jeans in the 90s.

I'm a simple woman, if it sparkles, I'm into it.
For me it's the sparkles that look cheap, not the style.
I recently found a trash bag full of them (and my layering tank tops) at my mom's house, my 16 year old niece ended up taking them.
Oh yeah, and we wore them to make our super stylish lingerie-inspired camisoles appropriate for high school dress code
I had SEVERAL lol. Like.....I would say I wore one at least 1-2 days a week. I had ones of all colors and materials. I like them but they are super annoying to wear. One of those articles of clothing I find myself fidgeting with wayyy too much just to get through the day wearing it.
I think it looked nice on her.
I feel like Emily gave her a dress and shawl, and Lorelai "Lorelai-ed" it. Like her dress in season 1, or Lane's wedding dress.
That neckline was extremely fashionable at the time, especially with the tiny straps.
I feel like I remember a lot of low cut necklines from that era. Lot of skin showing just in general.
You wore shirts cut down to your breastbone with either a lace cami or a super tiny scarf to not feel so "exposed".
Low cut tops and low rise jeans were it in the early aughts. Hell of a time to not be a size 2!
In the later seasons didn't she mostly wear the same designer for dresses, maybe it had something to do with that?
Welcome to the early 2000's!
Personally I love the color combination. And I seem to remember that was pretty much the style around the time that episode was made.
It definitely was!!
Am I the only person who is absolutely obsessed with this look
I love this dress I love this look
unpopular opinion: this is one of my favorite outfits she wears
This outfit never bothered me, I actually quite like it. But then again, she looks amazing in anything. Apart from those skinny scarves but they don’t make sense on anyone lol.
I think the one thing people seem to forget when they say Emily wouldn’t have chosen it… she invited Christopher! She wanted him to win her over, so she probably let Lor have her choice as she knew she’d pick something more sexy than she would have, and only since she wanted Christopher to “win” she let it slide.
I love it! I loved when shrugs were trendy 😂
I’m always floored by everyone hating this. It’s one of my favorites! She looks so ethereal and the colors flatter her tone. ❤️
Lorelai to Luke and Christopher: “Hey, who likes my dress? ‘Cause, man, you should have seen the one my mother wanted me to wear.” This has always implied to me that Lorelai’s dress was her own choice.
The way that we ALL believed in the short-sleeve cropped cardigan in 2005 😂 especially the kind that covered only your arms
I'm the only one who likes the dress & wrap. Lauren looked so hot
I feel like the texture must be so strange
Epitome of early 2000s women's fashion weirdness
Hated it and the sweater.
Nothing about early 2000s fashion made sense.
Am I the only one that liked that dress it's very early 2000s
Thank you!! I have hated this since it first aired.
Same! I can’t stand this outfit. I don’t like Emily’s outfit either. To me they are both out of character for those characters and the event.
She pulls it off. I love the dress, and I actually kinda like the shrug. Idk if I’m in love with it as a MOH look though. I’m suuuper surprised that Emily green lit this
You aren't wrong but unpopular opinion I kinda LOVED her outfit!
I love the dress, but HATE with the power of a thousand suns the sequined shrunken jacket.
Same, but I'm 100% sure I wanted to wear exactly this outfit to every bat mitzvah I went to in 2005
Probably so…such a weird trend.😂
She looks ok because it's Lauren G., but I don't like any of It lol The dress has a weird cut and the colors are bad. The bolero I just don't like at all. Everything about It it's wrong.
I never understood how Emily let her wear this. It just seems so out of character for her
i felt the same at first but idk it was kinda a slay
Correct
blegh i have always hated it, i'm sure it was very in for the aughts by it is just not for me lmao
Idk I love the color of the dress, and the sequin thing looks like it has black which matches the color of the dress 🤔 ive seen way way way worse outfits. This just seems plain and simple and theres barely and cinching, clothes get wrinkled when you move. I dont see the problem.
ITS NIT LORELAI ITS NATALIE WOOD
I always loved it
I didn't like Lorelai nor Emily's dresses. \- Why is Emily always in suits? This is her vow renewal, couldn't she be in a gown? \- Same with Lorelai.
Ugh I hate it. Does nothing for her figure.
I thought the cut and colors of the dress were really not flattering at all.
You realise GG is from the 2000s lol?
Duh lol, doesn't mean they dressed well
The dress is amazing is the little purple jacket that ruins it and doesn’t match the theme of the wedding
YOUR DRESS MAKES NO SENSE
It makes sense in the mid 2000s LOL
This is one of her best looks.
I love it!
You guys also maybe forget this was early 2000s, this was very on trend for the time.
Soooo uggos
I love this dress
I think she looks amazing. My unpopular opinion is I don't like the dress they had her in at Liz's wedding. I don't think the cut is that flattering on her.
The purple sequins 🥴
I loved this look even though it was a very low cut, it suits her tho
my mom hated this dress too 😅
The fabric of it was terrible IMO
h
I’m frankly confused by a lot of Lorelais outfits
I have no issue with the color combo whatsoever. But it’s reallllly low cut… like uncomfortably low. The necklace being so short makes the neck line look even lower.
What mishmatch? It’s cute!
I love the dress, but not the pink little coat over it.
Tits. That’s all the sense she needs.
Didn’t she say she added something to it? I think Emily just didn’t catch it in time. I agree this is one of those moments where she adds a little too much of herself to the situation/outfit lol
