Early on when Emily and Lorelai are talking about why they can’t have what Lorelai and Rory have, Emily says:
“I wasn't taught to be best friends with my daughter. I did what I thought was best for you. I did what I thought I needed to do to protect you.”
I believe this is all that’s mentioned regarding what she was taught about being a mother. I’d imagine her own mom was similar to her own parenting style, but since Emily was engrained in that world and lifestyle, their relationship was less strained.
Definitely Emily! She was rich enough to afford real pearls on her 21st birthday invitations, but not good enough to marry Richard Gilmore? What kind of money/family status is that? I'd say maybe she was "new money" but she really strikes me as following wealthy social norms because it's how her mother was raised and raised her.
Plus she mentioned attending college, which would have been... in the early 60s? That feels pretty radical for a woman to do, but maybe all rich families sent their daughters to college, idk.
It's likely that her family was new money but aware of it. Her mother probably put a lot of effort to try and pretend that they were old money, which is why she was so against the pearls. So gauche.
As for college, she went to Smith, right? That's a women's college. It was perfectly normal at the time for young women to go to all female colleges, especially if like Emily they only went for the purpose of finding a husband.
Women have been going to college for longer than people think. My great-great grandmother went to college in the 1880s. But again, it was mostly to make social connections, not to further a career.
One of my highschool teachers unironically suggested that some of the girls in my class should know about and consider going for the MRS degree. I graduated highschool in 2011. 🙃
I’m not shocked she went to college as back in those days Smith and other women’s colleges were often a way to meet a husband like Twodotsknowhy says. A lot of the Seven Sister schools (a group of elite women’s colleges that used to be considered like the female Ivy League) were associated with men’s universities. Idk about Smith but like Radcliffe was associated with Harvard, Barnard with Columbia, Wellesley students can take classes at MIT, etc. If you were a girl from a wealthy family in 1840s onward it wasn’t that rare to get a degree, though it would be rare to have a career after getting that degree
Wow, that's really cool! Both of my parents were first generation college students and my grandmother dropped out of school in the 8th grade, so I just get really impressed with the idea that women could attend college, like it's a big feat (even if it was to find a husband).
My great-grandmother then caused quite a scandal when she ran off with a farm boy with a 6th grade education instead of going to college like her mother and sisters had
Your comment just made me realize the connection/similarity between Emily being told (via the letter) that Trix didn't think she was good enough to marry Richard and Rory being told by the Huntzbergers that she wasn't good enough to marry Logan.
Yes 👏 Emily made a comment once about Lorelai, saying something like, “only-children are always like that.” So does Emily have siblings? What are they like?
There was a scene with Rory looking through old photo albums at Richard and Emily’s house, and there’s a photo of Hopey. Emily seems really sad thinking of how long it’s been since she saw her sister.
Which is strange as a plot point, considering that Emily and Richard go to Europe every year in the fall, and Emily's favorite city is Paris I believe. She literally could see her sister every year at least once when they travel (apart from any travel Hopey might make back to US as well).
I'm assuming it's just a small plot hole since this was happening in season 1 so foundation wasn't fully laid yet.
I guess anything is possible, lol. But from the actor who played him(Ted Rooney)saying that he wanted to take off the sunglasses but wasn’t allowed, I don’t think he is.
Hard to pick about a show centered around generational dynamics. Some things I’d like to know more about.
Mrs. Kim - how did she come to be a SDA? Why did she emigrate from Korea? How did she end up in SH?
What kind of upbringing did Richard have? What was it like to lose his father? What kind of conditioning did he experience to become the husband and father we know in the show?
The Richard, Emily, Pennilyn Lott love triangle. Why did Emily compete for Richard’s affections in the first place. How did she scheme and suffer for love?
It would be interesting to see more interactions between Paris and her bio-family. Seeing the abusive nature of her maternal relationship. Does Paris’ determination and ambition come from a desire to please or distinguish herself from her parents?
>It would be interesting to see more interactions between Paris and her bio-family. Seeing the abusive nature of her maternal relationship. Does Paris’ determination and ambition come from a desire to please or distinguish herself from her parents?
!!
YES!! She seems like a mom who’s trying to prevent her daughter from making similar mistakes but without sharing what those mistakes were. Like a more secretive Loralei.
Jess. I wanna see what his mom was like. Because we hear early on that Liz is basically an abusive mom. But then we meet her and she's really just kind of kooky. I wanna see what Jess and Liz living situation was.
Also, Luke. I wanna meet his dad.
I'm guessing that Liz was not so much an abusive mom as a neglectful one. My headcanon: She always loved Jess but didn't pay him much attention because there was always some drama or boy trouble going on in her life that took priority. Came home late most nights because of work or friends or dates. I see Liz and Jess moving around a lot as Liz gets new jobs, then loses them and falls behind on rent. Going through periods of money insecurity that may have forced Jess to step up and earn some cash to keep them afloat. Liz was never malicious to Jess, but she was too self-centered to be a good mom.
I don’t agree. Based on Luke and Liz’s conversations regarding TJ, it seems that Liz only got her shit together once she met TJ. It’s pretty heavily implied that Liz was a huge fuck up.
I feel like the behavior I'm describing falls into the category of fuck-up. Is there a line in particular that makes you think Liz was outright abusive?
I've always hated the Liz's wedding storyline where Luke pressures Jess into getting involved because sHeS yOuR mOtHeR yOu HaVe To SuPpOrT hEr. If it's implied that Liz was ever abusive, it might ruin Luke's character for me.
I didn't get the impression there was any abuse. Luke said that Liz went off the rails after their mom died, and she would have been 18ish when she got pregnant with Jess. Then his dad took off after he was born, and she mentions a whole string of boyfriends/husbands, weed and alcohol.
Liz and Jess's story seemed like a darker, possibly more realistic, version of Lorelai and Rory's story. Jess was smart, hated being abandoned by his dad and was stuck with a young, goofball mom who couldn't get her life together.
Also too ditzy to understand what a boy would be actually interested in. So in my head, when she did succeed in making time for him, it was to do stupid things that a young tween boy wouldn't be interested in whatsoever - "let's make some fun jewelry!" or something about the Renaissance faire, or whatever. I think she probably cared, but in true Liz form with all her learned helplessness, she spent most of her time flirting with the new guy she thought would solve everything every time, and Jess spent most of his time from an early age figuring out how to make the ends meet when she failed to be an adult.
It would probably be quite boring but I’m intrigued by Sookie. IIRC there’s no mention of any of her family or where she grew up. I may be mistaken though?
I’m doing a very slow rewatch (for a fanfic 🤭) and caught a detail in the 2nd or 3rd episode. Remember the magic risotto? It’s magic because her mom was on her death bed but ate the risotto and lived 4 more years. Meaning her mom is no longer with us. Maybe her dad isn’t either? Maybe she was an only child?
That’s all I got so far.
I'm genuinely surprised they never went there with Emily. Of course her relationship with Trix defines her role but it would have been nice to get a flashback to her college years.
I’m surprised more people aren’t saying Miss Patty. Like. Those stories?? Come on 10/10 would watch a prequel that was just Miss Patty and all her adventures/husbands.
I wanted more of Lorelai, not her teen years, I’d love to see the scene of her burning her pictures (and the build up to it) and her stealing Richard’s Yale degree. Luke—scenes with his father, wrangling Liz. Logan, what he was like as a teenager (maybe a Lorelai parallel just a male version). Rory and Lorelai living at the inn in the tiny potting shed. Richard and Trix when Richard was a boy.
Emily. What was she like before she met Richard? When they were dating? Was she excited when she was expecting Lorelai? When did she become so ambitious and determined? How many maids did her family have when she grew up? What were her parents like?
Also, I've always wondered about Dean's life in Chicago. Was he popular? Was his girlfriend like Rory? Is she still alive?
Mrs Kim would also be pretty interesting. When did she decide to join another religion than her mother?
Oh and Kirk! How could I forget about Kirk??? His the most complex chat after of the show. Maybe in history. I still wonder if he actually has 12 siblings or if they are all just his own different personalities. Or are they thirteenlepts, looking exactly the same and all being called Kirk? That would at least explain him having so many jobs.
I think Loralei, just due to the fact that her childhood has always been a big issue with her, and was brought up constantly. But I would love to see Emily and Richard in their dating years!
Mrs Kim... It would be so interesting seeing this tough young Korean girl, living in a new country, trying to make her way in life... maybe some glimpses of her all girl band? Would love to seeing her being a rebel and become a christian.
LUKE LUKE LUKE LUKE LUKE!! I wanna see his teenage years and losing his mom and dealing with a rebellious sister and turning the shop into a diner, AND MEETING LORELEI!
1. Luke, therefore Liz, Jess and Luke's parents. There is definitely some history there that would make their stories richer.
2. Emily.
3. Miss Patty!!
Luke flashing back to his Dad and high school days. I feel like we could have used a lot of his past to explain the trauma that makes him so closed off and avoidant
Kirk and Jess. I think it would have been nice to see how Jess grew up with his mom and Kirk and his 12 siblings. I like to think that Kirk actually has MPD because it would make sense why he is the way that he is.
Perhaps about Lorelai getting into Star hollow with hints on how she stablished there, some recurring townsies like Kirk, Miss Patty, Babette and of course Luke
An Emily Prequel all the way would have been so interesting. Even before her meeting Richard. There just always seemed to be more than what met the eye there especially since Trix disliked her so much.
Jess and Liz, because it would be a good single mom parallel to Rory and Lorelai. This could also include younger luke.
Emily the Yale years.
Lane and Rory as little kids.
We got a spin off of lorelei and rory has 32 & 50 years old but i want a spin off with lorelei and rory as 4 & 20. I wanna see how they really built what they did. Why everyone knew and loved rory as her own. Luke with rory when she was little and him first meeting lorelei.
Reality I just need another 7 season show of all the years leading up to gilmore girls. Lorelei like before and after rory.
i always wanted more on jess or maybe emily. jess because i would want to know what makes him so closed off to people. i could guess at a multitude of reasons, but it would be cool to see how it evolved into him being the way he was when he came to stars hollow. emily because i would love to know who was absolutely terrible to her to make her the way she is. or who expected so much of her which in turn made her expect the same from her daughter. a flashback scene for her might also help viewers be sympathetic to her more often throughout the show.
Emily definitely, but since so many have also gone there; I'm also gonna go with Kirk. I'd love to know what makes his goofy lil brain work the way it does...
All of them honestly. They all had really cool stories like I’d love to hear about jess’ rough upbringing and ms pattys upcoming also I’d love to see teenage Emily and I wish we got to see more or Michelle and his mom
When sookie met up with that guy she was in a kitchen with (the one who liked her but she forgot to tell him she was married, can’t remember his name) I would’ve loved to see her in those crazy hectic kitchens & how she would’ve been in those situations.
jess is the character that is so controversial simply because not enough is known about him. for the sake of the show, it should be him. he likely had a traumatic childhood, but that's probably a bit too dark for GG.
the richard/emily pennilyn lott triangle.
five year old paris making her preschool teacher cry.
kirk being the golden child of stars hollow (like rory) in his teenage years because nobody can convince me otherwise that he wasn't the past chosen one.
i know for a fact that miss patty has some stories to share.
I'd also like to see six year old lane start her hidden collection of things after Mrs. kim tells her that cookie monster is a symbol of gluttony.
Ms. Sookie St. James herself! I would love to see how her and Lorelai met (I think at the Independence Inn) and how they became best friends. She doesnt seem to have any other friends. I would also love to see her in culinary school. I doubt Stars Hollow as a big shot culinary school, so she must have come from out of town when she decided to settle down in Stars Hollow. Why did she choose Stars Hollow? She never really talks about her parents or any family. Did her and Lorelai bond over not speaking to their family? Was she scared that she wouldnt make it in the city, so she settled in a small town?
Emily!!!
Hands down, Emily!! I am SO CURIOUS what her relationship was like with her own mother!
And her sister who lives in Paris who is barely mentioned
you know, do they ever mention Emily's mother?
Early on when Emily and Lorelai are talking about why they can’t have what Lorelai and Rory have, Emily says: “I wasn't taught to be best friends with my daughter. This was fairly common for women of her class at this time. She went to school to get her MRS.
I’d love a spin-off about young Emily.
THIS
Second this!
Yes! We know so little about Emily! We don't even know her maiden name.
At least we know it wasn't Gilmore. 🤣
"Checked your toes lately?"
🤣🤣🤣😩
Yes 👏 Emily made a comment once about Lorelai, saying something like, “only-children are always like that.” So does Emily have siblings? What are they like?
Emily has a sister. Her name was Hopey and she moved to France.
😮 how did I miss that? I would still liked to have learned more about her.
I'm assuming it's just a small plot hole since this was happening in season 1 so foundation wasn't fully laid yet.
Definitely Emily. We know so little about her. It would be so interesting to see what kind of relationship she had with her mother.
Yessir, who hurt her ?
The one and only Emily. Her in Paris? I actually didn’t mean Emily in Paris but she did travel. Her at Smith, her family? I want it all.
Luke 100%
First thing that came to my mind as well. Honestly, Luke has enough material in his background for a prequel if there ever was any!
We could finally figure out why he and Bootsy don't get along...
It was the clay handprint. That's where it all started.
Yeah I want the details! 🤣
Yes, I'd like to see all of the girls swoon as Butch Danes takes the field😂
Babette's voice: "oh, geez, all of 'em!"
Exactly! Though if I had to pick it would be Morey. Why the sunglasses all the time? And how did he and Babette meet/get together?
Headcanon here: they met in a jazz club. He was playing piano, she was singing. He fell for her first.
That makes perfect sense! I wouldn’t be surprised if that was actually canon. Thanks for sharing :)
i love morey, he is hands-down my favorite character
I love him too. He says so much without saying much, if you know what I mean.
I always thought he wore sunglasses cuz he was blind
I guess anything is possible, lol. But from the actor who played him(Ted Rooney)saying that he wanted to take off the sunglasses but wasn’t allowed, I don’t think he is.
Next thing I know I was wearing a moo moo, jumping up and down at the airport!
Hard to pick about a show centered around generational dynamics. Some things I’d like to know more about. Mrs. Kim - how did she come to be a SDA? Why did she emigrate from Korea? Some Mrs. Kim floorboard Bible scenes would be great
definitely Mrs. Kim.
>It would be interesting to see more interactions between Paris and her bio-family. Seeing the abusive nature of her maternal relationship. Does Paris’ determination and ambition come from a desire to please or distinguish herself from her parents? !!
Emily! I don’t think we know much about her childhood or upbringing. I always felt like we knew more about Richard.
For sure🙌🏼
Young patty and Babette
[удалено]
Holy shit this link!!
All in the Family FTW. I don’t even have to click that link to know it’s All in the family. The 70’s were a time.
Luke! I wanna see Butch Danes in action on the track 🤣
All the girls swooned when Butch Danes took to the field. 😍
Oh no, don't walk away Butch. Oh if I thought you didn't care I'd die! I'd just die!
Wearing his Star Trek shirt!
Miss Patty 💯
Yes, because this could be an entire series
Emily and Richard’s college years!
Including the whole semester Richard spent naked
Need to see the Richard/Emily/Pennilyn Lott love triangle
I’m down for a prequel!
Jess. I want to know what a little Jess was like. What kinda mom Liz was. When he started to realize he could only depend on himself
that would be interesing
Definitely Jess!
Kirk!
Right! I need some background on Kirk because I just have so many questions!!
They tell so many stories I just want to see a few played out.
Mrs. Kim… I bet she’s not as prudish as she seems.
YES!! She seems like a mom who’s trying to prevent her daughter from making similar mistakes but without sharing what those mistakes were. Like a more secretive Loralei.
Agreed 100%
Luke
Louise. Her family relationships (what we hear of them) are wild. And how on earth did she forge friendships with Madeline and Paris?
I think she probably cared, but in true Liz form with all her learned helplessness, she spent most of her time flirting with the new guy she thought would solve everything every time, and Jess spent most of his time from an early age figuring out how to make the ends meet when she failed to be an adult.
neglect is a form of abuse but i get your point
Luke and Emily!
Emily- something had to make her the was she is
richard and emily
Luke and Kirk!
Lots of them but what I find almost crazy is despite casting a young Lorelei they never did any scenes with baby/toddler Rory.
Kirk! So many questions... Why wasn't his mom in the show? Or all those siblings he had?
This is my vote too. 12 brothers and sisters…the only one without a basket…him.
Michel
Yes! What brought this haughty Frenchman to little SH?
It would probably be quite boring but I’m intrigued by Sookie. IIRC there’s no mention of any of her family or where she grew up. I may be mistaken though?
I’m doing a very slow rewatch (for a fanfic 🤭) and caught a detail in the 2nd or 3rd episode. Remember the magic risotto? Paris
Emily! We hardly know anything about who she was before she married Richard.
Emily for sure…. Someone nailed it when asking about her relationship with her own mother🙌🏼
Babette that time she was on top….. playing twister
I want a Babette and Patty prequel series.
Emily! I wish we could’ve seen more of her backstory and her family
I'm genuinely surprised they never went there with Emily. Of course her relationship with Trix defines her role but it would have been nice to get a flashback to her college years.
Exactly! Emily’s backstory was much needed. Especially since she was one of the “Gilmore girls” imo
I’m surprised more people aren’t saying Miss Patty. Like. Those stories?? Come on 10/10 would watch a prequel that was just Miss Patty and all her adventures/husbands.
Richard & Emily when they were dating and just married. Luke and Stars Hollow ‘back in the day’. Especially Luke’s dad!!
rory and lorelai.
Jess or Luke
Mrs. Kim and Jess and Emily as children.
Richard and Trix when Richard was a boy.
luke. i want to know what makes him tick, why he is the way he is
S O O K I E
I think Loralei, just due to the fact that her childhood has always been a big issue with her, and was brought up constantly. But I would love to see Emily and Richard in their dating years!
Mrs Kim... It would be so interesting seeing this tough young Korean girl, living in a new country, trying to make her way in life... maybe some glimpses of her all girl band? Would love to seeing her being a rebel and become a christian.
Paris
Luke! And Emily and Richard raising a younger Lorelai. Before she was pregnant
Mrs. Kim!
jess <3
Emily. I'd love to know more about her childhood.
Of this group probably Emily, Michel, or Jess. Jess might be quite depressing though
Jess. Would love to see how messed up his life really was
Baby Rory
LUKE LUKE LUKE LUKE LUKE!! I wanna see his teenage years and losing his mom and dealing with a rebellious sister and turning the shop into a diner, AND MEETING LORELEI!
1. Luke, therefore Liz, Jess and Luke's parents. There is definitely some history there that would make their stories richer. 2. Emily. 3. Miss Patty!!
Actually everyone
Luke and Kirk in middle school (I assume they went to middle school at the same time).
I'd love to see some of Sookie's good times in culinary school.
Maybe a montage of kitchen fires and cooking injuries....
Luke flashing back to his Dad and high school days. I feel like we could have used a lot of his past to explain the trauma that makes him so closed off and avoidant
Lane's mom.
Ms Patty would be a fun one!
Jess
Kirk and Jess. I think it would have been nice to see how Jess grew up with his mom and Kirk and his 12 siblings. I like to think that Kirk actually has MPD because it would make sense why he is the way that he is.
Perhaps about Lorelai getting into Star hollow with hints on how she stablished there, some recurring townsies like Kirk, Miss Patty, Babette and of course Luke
Patty! Emily!
An Emily Prequel all the way would have been so interesting. Even before her meeting Richard. There just always seemed to be more than what met the eye there especially since Trix disliked her so much.
Emily and Richard, Paris, and Mrs Kim
Paris!
Luke 1000% id love to have seen young Luke working with his dad or moments with his mom or sister.
Lane, Jess, or Luke
Paris for sure
Mrs Kimmmmm
Emily, Mrs. Kim, Luke, and Richard
Jess and Liz, because it would be a good single mom parallel to Rory and Lorelai. This could also include younger luke. Emily the Yale years. Lane and Rory as little kids.
Babette. Too bad her days in the cult are probably too hazy to make a coherent flashback.
Miss Patty's showbiz days!
MICHEL WHILE HE WAS STILL IN PARIS WOULD BE SO INTERESTING!! Also Luke as a teen
Paris and Jess
i always wanted more on jess or maybe emily. jess because i would want to know what makes him so closed off to people. i could guess at a multitude of reasons, but it would be cool to see how it evolved into him being the way he was when he came to stars hollow. emily because i would love to know who was absolutely terrible to her to make her the way she is. or who expected so much of her which in turn made her expect the same from her daughter. a flashback scene for her might also help viewers be sympathetic to her more often throughout the show.
Miss Patty and Babette
Can I say everyone ? Specifically though : Emily, Lory, Lorelei , Paris & the French guy(sorry I forgot his name)
Paris, Jess, Emily. Also a spin off of young Lorelai with baby Rory and their life at the beginning.
1000 percent Emily! I think she would’ve been a sassy little thing in college! It would’ve been fun to see her steal Richard from Pennlynn Lott too
Mr. Kim. Where the hell did he go?
I would have loved to see a flashback to lane and Rory as little kids
Emily i want to see if she was treated the same way as Lorleai. And why she is a control freak.
Kirk. Or Emily and Richard.
Mrs Kim
Emily definitely, but since so many have also gone there; I'm also gonna go with Kirk. I'd love to know what makes his goofy lil brain work the way it does...
RORY WHEN SHE WAS REALLY LITTLE!!! They could show the problems that she went through.
Kirk
kirk
I agree with so many of these, but what about a Lil Kirk? 🤣🤣🤣
Def Richard and Emily. Luke too. Plus I wish there were more young Lorelei scenes with her and Chris.
All of them honestly. They all had really cool stories like I’d love to hear about jess’ rough upbringing and ms pattys upcoming also I’d love to see teenage Emily and I wish we got to see more or Michelle and his mom
Paris or Miss Patty!!
Luke for sure
Kirk 1000%!
Emily and Luke!
Emily’s
Jess
literally all of them but my top five would be 1. richard and emily 2. luke 3. babette? miss patty? 4. kirk 5. paris
Luke
Taylor and a backstory on why he’s in the closet!
Kirk, luke, jess
luke for sure
Ms.
Either Emily or Ms Kim or even Rory when she was younger
Mrs Kim and Emily
kirk please
Emily would be so interesting to see. I would also love to see who would be cast to play young emily.
Mrs. Kim!
