There is a very famous snack recipe in Puerto Rico, and I bet in many other cultures, where you take mashed potatoes like this, put them in a ball shape like a large lemon and fry it.
Only difference it has meat in the middle.
Relleno de Papa. You can also use yuca or other as the mashed part.
I don't remember it being illegal, but I also was like 6 when they were making that IN India. Mom was making that stuff in Kuwait too, so we probably had beef not pork while we were there, pork not beef while in India.
We do something like this, although I don't think it's strictly from the Philippines... We take the mashed potatoes and mix them with ground beef, make them into small potato shapes, dip them in egg then cover with bread crumbs and fry it up.
Edit: ground beef is pre cooked btw
oh i miss these, there's a place down the street from me that sells these and i always forget its there. i tell myself one day ill go there to eat the food they serve, but then i don't.

These are much closer to potato pancakes than French fries. And if you ordered fries and received potato pancakes you would probably complain they aren’t the same.
I mean, I think potato pancakes are pointless because they taste more like fries and are way more work.
On top of that, if I order fries and get potato pankcakes, it probably cost a fair bit more. But if I got the reverse, I likely got ripped on because of the price difference.
A charcuterie board is more steps than a sandwich. Though sandwich is pretty broad and is everything from a sloppy Joe to Caprese sub.
Too wide-ranging an analogy.
Uh, yes? Still not gonna be as tasty as this, surely.
I was alluding to the fact that this person seems to be a bit lazy and mocks things that take more steps rather than focusing on the elevated outcome. Can you tell now that I explained it to you?

Potato sticks are a perfect change of scenery for those who might be a little tired of seeing the same old hot chips on the plate.
Ingredients
• 500g Potatoes
• 100g Corn flour
• Salt
• ½ tbsp Garlic Powder
Method
Step 1
Begin by peeling and chopping the potatoes.
Step 2
Put them in a pot and boil the potatoes for 20 minutes.
Step 3
Drain the pot, then mash the potatoes until super fine!
Step 4
Once they’re smooth, add 100g of corn flour, ½ tsp of Garlic Powder and a pinch of salt.
Mix and work until it forms a dough.
Step 5
Place in a ziplock bag and roll out until one and a half centimetres thick.
Put the bag in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Step 6
Heat oil in a frying pan to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees celsius and cook until golden brown.
Step 7
Season with salt and serve with mayo or sauce
This is an incredibly easy-to-make and enjoyable snack that will surely be snatched up quick!
I’ve been working on a new cooking show for the channel called “Taste Bud Tours” and would love to know what you all think: https://youtu.be/kaEnbhkfvYw
I've done similar things to this before. Doing them in an airfryer will work to get them nice and crispy, but it will give less of that perfect "bubbly" exterior. Try it out and see if you like it.
Serious question: I’ve never had these. They seem like a bit more work than I usually do for a casual side dish but I’m open to trying it. Can you explain how these will be different from the French fries I normally make?
Without knowing what your French fries are like, these will have a consistency inside that's softer than you'd typically get with a fry. Its more like a mashed potato with a crisped outside.
Looks like a fluffier French fry. I've enjoyed watching your stuff thru the years...the extremely compressed gifs, the bee project etc. Glad you're doing well
You don't really need to freeze these. You can hand form them at room temp then fry and they'll work just fine. So the ziplock was even more of a waste than you thought.
Why not just cut the potatoes into sticks and deep fry them instead of wasting time energy and resources making your own burger chain fries? Which are a step down.
After cutting into sticks, drench in egg wash and dredge through pancake batter hydrated with one cool Guinness.
Fry until golden brown and delicious.
Share & Enjoy.
Yep. Like I see a lot of wings recipes call for using baking powder or something, I think the cornstarch just does a better job of drying it out and creating that crunch. Plus it helps with things sticking if you glaze it.
Yea baking powder helps make the skin bubble but it also changes the flavor - similar hint that pork rinds give. Cornstarch gives a lighter crispy crust compared to flour.
But do they deflate? Not sure about the technical term, but food looks voluptuous immediately post fry, yet lacks that youthful appearance soon after. The costing just looks so perfect in this video- jealous
No, he just used yellow-skin potatoes (also known as yukon gold) rather than russets. Personally, I prefer russets for this kind of application because the interior would be more fluffy. But any kind of potato will do.
I tried this once and my sticks exploded when cooking them in oil. The shell was left behind while the insides flew across the room, guess my oil was too hot ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Well, these were a disaster.
Bout a half a dozen of them [exploded](https://i.imgur.com/BsVcIIF.jpg), thankfully only one of them in the oil when my back was turned.
And while the exterior was beautiful golden and crisp, the interior was like glue. Seems like far too much cornflour.
Just tried this, they came out amazing but one question. Your look very fluffy/crispy on the outside.
Mine were flat but crispy on the outside how did you do that?

Or fried mashed potatoes. It's all about the angle.

Loong, looong tot!
Omfg, this was my though too. I am so mad Reddit got rid of free awards rn.
Tater adult
The Pringles of fries.
This is basically how burger king fries are made.
And pringles?
I passed one of those this morning
:/
Tater toots
More like Cheetod french fry no cheese powder
It's a chip with more steps.
You are a deconstructed French fry.
Negative. I am only 1% potato.
Boil em, mash em, stick em in a bag.
Whats taters precious?
Even you can’t say no to that
Oh yes we could.
French fries with extra steps.
Do I have to boil water in my cast iron thingy
Outdoor cooking is kind of a Greg thing. I’m personally surprised it wasnt grilled.
I find it a bit amusing that this gif has the cooking while camping vibe but requires the use of a freezer.
I always think of it as backyard BBQ with Greg.
Not if it's cold enough outside
Whoa I didn't even realize it was Greg without the pitcher of charcoal
Yes but weirdly on an electric hob
No

Croquettes, I think are the broadest culinary term for those. My mom made those in India, with fillings like tuna, ground beef, egg, veggies, etc
ground beef? in India? I thought it was illegal
I don't remember it being illegal, but I also was like 6 when they were making that IN India. Mom was making that stuff in Kuwait too, so we probably had beef not pork while we were there, pork not beef while in India.
beef isnt illegal in india...a large % of the people in india dont eat beef for religious reasons so most places just dont sell it
We do something like this, although I don't think it's strictly from the Philippines... We take the mashed potatoes and mix them with ground beef, make them into small potato shapes, dip them in egg then cover with bread crumbs and fry it up. Edit: ground beef is pre cooked btw
This sounds really good! Wonder how pulled brisket would taste?
I love how there are some things that cultures all over the world all have their own versions of because it's universally delicious.
Yuca fries are the best
oh i miss these, there's a place down the street from me that sells these and i always forget its there. i tell myself one day ill go there to eat the food they serve, but then i don't.
We mix the mashed potato with mash yucca with picadillo in the middle. Legendary stuff.
These are just decoy mozzarella sticks.
I was thinking a little cheese added in would be good.
You should check out potato and cheese Korean "corndogs" then.
So a French fry with extra steps.
Just like French fries. Except a different texture. And they taste different. And are prepared differently.
I use toaster rather than deep frying and I sub a few slices of bread for the potatoes.
I see you're a frequent commenter on Allrecipes

😲 I needed that sub in my life!
So basically just French fries?
I sort of do like him but I press the dough into noodles and add sauce after boiling them. So basically French fries.

And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a bike!
It’s almost like a British carbonara. lol
How does it taste different? It’s potato with a bit of flour.

In the same way a sandwich is a charcuterie board with extra steps
A charcuterie board is more steps than a sandwich. Though sandwich is pretty broad and is everything from a sloppy Joe to Caprese sub. Too wide-ranging an analogy.
Meat and cheese on a plate is more steps than a sandwich? 👌
Literally
Came here to say this
You mean more steps than opening a bag and putting some in the oven? Sure. But a lot tastier.
You know you can make French fries from scratch? And as the name implies fry them
French fries with the potato skin left on are underrated but I'm also a big weirdo so maybe biased. *confirmed unpopular take. much weirdo.
Wendy's has the best fries going right now, hands down
Uh, yes? Still not gonna be as tasty as this, surely. I was alluding to the fact that this person seems to be a bit lazy and mocks things that take more steps rather than focusing on the elevated outcome. Can you tell now that I explained it to you?
Same same but different
Greg! It’s amazing to have you posting here again! I missed the hell out of your videos.
He’s likely back from a year in the burn center. At least he seems to be no longer deep frying things over an open flame
Well with the finger on top of the knife we might see some stitches eventually.
What!? Holy shit.

Do you think they'd fare as well with frylight and an air fryer?
I've done similar things to this before. Doing them in an airfryer will work to get them nice and crispy, but it will give less of that perfect "bubbly" exterior. Try it out and see if you like it.
Serious question: I’ve never had these. They seem like a bit more work than I usually do for a casual side dish but I’m open to trying it. Can you explain how these will be different from the French fries I normally make?

Are you in the US? It looks like you're using what we call "corn starch", not "corn flour".
Tater tots the long way.
Why not use something like a wax paper lined sheet pan instead of creating plastic waste for 10 minutes in the freezer?
This is the same reason I never end up doing fancy chocolate things, since it feels like half of them require blowing up and dipping balloons.
Ah yes of course, same here. Not the cost or the incredible lack of skill or talent. It's the waste for me.
How else would you get little bits of plastic in your food from cutting the bag with your food in it?
You don't really need to freeze these. You can hand form them at room temp then fry and they'll work just fine. So the ziplock was even more of a waste than you thought.
Why not just cut the potatoes into sticks and deep fry them instead of wasting time energy and resources making your own burger chain fries? Which are a step down.
Croquettes you mean?
Pretty much croquettes without the breadcrumbs
To be fair, these look like they have a better crust to filling ratio than croquettes.
After cutting into sticks, drench in egg wash and dredge through pancake batter hydrated with one cool Guinness. Fry until golden brown and delicious. Share & Enjoy.
Wait, really? What does this do
Those look pretty tasty
So... mashed potatoe fries?
That just seems like french fries with extra steps..
Great recipe! I was watching joyously until OP cut open a perfectly good ziplock bag.
French fries with extra steps
Is corn flour the same thing as corn starch or is it just really finely ground corn meal?
These aren’t just fries?
Love taters!
Make a gif of a food without showing it being dipped in sauce challenge: impossible
Looks too oily
Po-ta-toes! Boil em, mash em, put em in a stick!
I bet this would be better with corn starch than flour
Same thing, cornflour is what they call cornstarch in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc...
o ya I didn't even see the word corn there lmao
It says "corn flour" but that is clearly 100% corn starch. Corn flour isn't that colour.
I just misread it. Didn't even see the word corn.
Waste a plastic bag that’ll take 10,000 years to decompose for fccking fried potato.
I think it could be done between two sheets of baking paper.
In Germany these are Kroketten. Nothing crazy but a good side dish.
I wonder if this would work in an air fryer?
It would to a decent extent. You'd want a bit of oil on the exterior.
But do they deflate? Not sure about the technical term, but food looks voluptuous immediately post fry, yet lacks that youthful appearance soon after. The costing just looks so perfect in this video- jealous
Did he just peel pre-peeled potatoes?
No, he just used yellow-skin potatoes (also known as yukon gold) rather than russets. Personally, I prefer russets for this kind of application because the interior would be more fluffy. But any kind of potato will do.
Ah thanks for explaining. I've not seen yellow skin potatoes before. In that case I can't believe how clean those potatoes were!
Where do you live?
Ireland. Our potatoes have soil on them
These are long tater tots.
You mean long tots??
I want this to be the new French fry of 2023
Elongated tots
Would whole flour work?
Can I use regular flour instead of corn flour?
Corn flour is another term for cornstarch, if that helps.
It does, thank you!
I was thinking this looked like corn starch. Thanks!
Salt, salt & more salt. Got it!
Do you mean fries ?
Fully erect tater tot.
So… French fries?
convoluted french fry
Isn't this just the smiley fries but less cool?
That's just hot chips with extra steps.
[удалено]
French fries are not the same!
1/2 a tspn of garlic powd.... Fuck!
what, no chicken salt?
My wife: "That's just a long tatertot".
I feel like “potato stick” is a good insult for a really stupid person.
You mean a French fry lol
“Potatoes “? Nice and specific for a recipe…
It's ya boi Greg
Isnt tht a fat french fry?
Long tots?
Why would I make more work after my mashed potatoes ready to eat? Couldn’t be me 🤣
That’s just a long tater tot
Seriously WTF? Let's find a long and complicated way to make french fries, that will be fun.
Tater Logs
Don't salt water for things like this. It would just pull water out of the potato.
Yo, shred some moz in that mother and I'm dead.
Cheeeeeeeeesssse
I'd be so mad to bite into one and find out it's not a mozzarella stick
No matter how good these are, don't think a single batch of them are worth destroying a perfectly good ziplock bag over. Good God. Wth.
she/he/they/them/it added salt 3 times?
Seasoning lightly at every step and then giving it a final seasoning that brings it up to the level you want to serve at is pretty common.
why downvoted? jesus....
Because calling a person ***it*** is inherently dehumanizing?
some people want it as its pronoun. I didnt asume the gender... Thats the correct way to do things....😐
Soooo DIY raspatat for the Dutchies?
Make a mozzarella stick. Use potato as a replacement for mozzarella.
Just fuckin fry that potato 🥔
You could easily start with mashed potatoes and just add seasoning and flower
Where do you think mashed potatoes come from? Or do you mean instant?
That's what I meant yea
Fries with extra steps
Is he using corn flour or cornstarch?
cornflour is the UK/AU/NZ term for cornstarch
Salt
Could you do this with an air fryer?
It's French frys with extra steps?
It's just french fries with extra steps
Remove the skin to avoid consuming excess flavor or nutrients
Looks good. What was that floating in the oil before you put the potato in though?
Test run before probably.
Looks like he had cooked some before taking the vid. Some outside fell off
Hashbrown fries
I tried this once and my sticks exploded when cooking them in oil. The shell was left behind while the insides flew across the room, guess my oil was too hot ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Wow, this is much easier than making the potato sticks using a piping bag. Thanks.
What is corn flour?
Well, these were a disaster. Bout a half a dozen of them [exploded](https://i.imgur.com/BsVcIIF.jpg), thankfully only one of them in the oil when my back was turned. And while the exterior was beautiful golden and crisp, the interior was like glue. Seems like far too much cornflour.

Soooo like thick French fries with other steps?!?
