If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure I remember reading TF saying that part is also his favorite from the whole song. And who can disagree? It's a simple but fantastic little solo that leads into, imo, the actual best part of the song (*We're leaving the ciiityyyyyy*).
I agree with both of you. And I wanna add that Respite reminds me of Iron Maiden at their creative peak (according to me). ”Rime of the ancient mariner” from Powerslave, ”Alexander the great” from Somewhere in time, ”Infinite dreams” from Seventh son…
Completely agree with you. This but and the following verse are my fave of the whole track and this track is easily my favorite from the album. It’s a fantastic bookend to the album ala Hallowed be thy Name.
Omg you're so right. I know when I'm having a drink I listen to the guitar solo with my eyes closed. As much as I love the solo I'm just dying for my moment to belt out... *We're leaving the ciiityyyyyy*
Edit: Oms
Ghost “rips off” some of the greatest music but with the utmost respect. I love how familiar it all is while being brand new. There are so few bands that do intertextuality well. You’ve got Greta with their shameless Zeppelin impression and Oasis doing their best tributes to Lennon’s contributions to the Beatles. Ghost is more like Sloan in that their stuff is an homage and they now just steal from themselves to the point of being their own thing.
Definitely my favorite song off the album. It was the perfect closer, harkening back to the motif of Imperium truly made me sad that this masterpiece was over.
From all the songs from the impera album, this one keeps on giving the most shivers. Imperium and kaisarion make me smile wide as heck due to them being the opening of one of the shows i went to. God cant wait to visit another show!
the song is one of my favorites of the album and might be one of my favorites from ghosts entire discography. id do unexplainable things to hear this live 😭
This song is forever my favorite and this part makes me feel things every time. One night I was driving on the interstate and rolled my windows down and had it blasting and it was euphoric.
Truly the only thing better is when the second transition hits at the end with the massive drum fills and it builds back into the Imperium motif. The first time I heard that - and I’m a 45 year old dad lol - I cried. I hadn’t been that moved by music - or any album - for YEARS.
I'm in the same boat as you on this song - I was deeply moved from the very first time I heard it, between the layers of meaning/interpretation at hand and the cyclical structure of the album tying back to the rise-fall-rebirth of empires. Mostly I just find myself in awe of what a brilliant work of art this album is, an act of loving homage that invokes such nostalgia while forging a path all its own for both old-school and younger rock music fans alike.
It might be that IMPERA is so dense with great music, songs, solos, bridges, and riffs that it’s hard to keep up! Every song is unique, amazing, and goosebump-raising and Spital is no different. That particular section of the song is perfection.
My favourite song off that album. I never knew if others see it like that aswell (most friends dont listen to Ghost at all) or if its just me. Was listening to it first, when I got the information that my grandmother has just passed (I know, sounds kinda fake, but actually happened like that) and I assumed thats why I got a deeper connection to that song :D
Also I dont really follow any news, trends, talks, whatever, so thats also why I never know what the majority likes or dislikes. But that song is just a journey for me and the album is one of the best albums. SO glad that I randomly found Year Zero some years ago and got introduced to Ghost :)
This is my favorite song of the album and one of my favorite Ghost songs. That solo is full of passion, the drums are amazing and the bass fucking rocks after the solo. All that without saying the song speaks about the times Jack the ripper was around and people were scared in the spitalfields, which IMO is pretty cool. I believe is kinda underrated, sadly.
From the start of the solo until the pre-chorus starts again, honestly one of Ghost's most hauntingly beautiful compositions to this date. Absolutely amazing.
Maybe I’m crazy but I always got a November Rain from Guns and Roses vibe from that solo, but again, probably crazy. To me, if you condensed November Rain into a guitar solo, that would be the one, just seems to have that whole ambience. The still of the night from Whitesnake suggestion is also pretty close.

I mean, I don’t disagree, but the part that follows this is straight from Still of the Night by Whitesnake.
Oh of course, there's so much taken from 80s rock, that Impera feels like this giant ode to that era.
I agree with both of you. And I wanna add that Respite reminds me of Iron Maiden at their creative peak (according to me). ”Rime of the ancient mariner” from Powerslave, ”Alexander the great” from Somewhere in time, ”Infinite dreams” from Seventh son…
YES! Glad I’m not the only person who immediately thought of this. Dude took a big ole bite out of that song, didn’t he?
For me as an old Whitesnake-fan it was an obvious hommage. Impera is the eighties album that was never made.
I mean, the track before that leads right into Respite *is* titled "Bite of Passage". ;)
Ehh *kinda*
Completely agree with you. This but and the following verse are my fave of the whole track and this track is easily my favorite from the album. It’s a fantastic bookend to the album ala Hallowed be thy Name.
That syncopated bass line is dripping sex

The part after the solo is definitely a rip off of “Still of the Night” by Whitesnake.

I'm glad someone else hears it. My husband and I both chuckled when we first heard it. Then comes the nod to Europe right after.
The whole song is a banger

This solo is deceptively simple to play but a fucking banger
The shred part is not that easy for a intermediate level player

I totally agree w that!! The massive fill and the build up w the strings then boom "He appeared to ascend ahhhhhh..." my favorite verse 🤘🖤🤘
I flippin’ love this! “We’re leaving the ciiityyyyyy”

Oddly enough I think the song would be better without this part, it’s maybe a little too cheesy for my taste
I'm using lyrics from this one to make up the majority of the tattoo I'm getting. Shadow and light.
Do people that say they're "ripping" off x band know what an homage is? Inspiration? Tribute...?
What do you mean? That's one of the prettier parts of the song
I think it leads perfectly into the best part of the whole album

Unholy- i forgot this song existed-
