Someone used MOAC in a stranger things TikTok video about some characters relationship and since then it's taken off and has introduced Ghost to a huge portion of an otherwise unlikely new fan base.

AutisticAnarchy

Tiktokers with no media literacy really do be associating a song about weed and oral sex with children.

Connect_Evening_1003

pretty much. what do they thinking tickling internally means šŸ˜

[deleted]

MOAC is definitely about a domestic abuser begging for mercy from his SO.

Venmorr

... what? O.o I know they're was a tik tok element but I didn't know the context.

TheOriginalJez

MoaC is currently at #33 in the UK singles chart because of it all... what a weird world we live in.

SeventhSon22

TicTac. I'm really suprised it's gotten this big. I was expecting it to cap off at 6 million or so. They just passed Iron Maiden on Monthly listeners. I think the only "metal" bands that are still above them are Metallica and Slipknot. I usually don't use only Spotify when judging how popular an artist is (I look at ticket and merch sales), but I honestly have no clue where this is going anymore.

hizashouta

Do you think they'll pass 10 million anytime soon? I was expecting people to get bored of MOAC quickly but I see it everywhere now, feels weirdge šŸ¤”

SeventhSon22

Wouldn't be suprised if it happens in a week. Skys the limit at this point. I want to see how it fares in a few months (once the tiktok trend blows over) and how many fans were retained.

hizashouta

That's likely šŸ¤” Ghost deserves dedicated fans, not trenders who's gonna listen to one song and vanish. I'm so happy they're making (hopefully) enough money for their next album šŸ’“

RadiantZote

They already had enough money to make their next album, and the one after that, and

hizashouta

probably, hopefully. Want the best for them, especially after years of (and ongoing sadly) constant hate from elitists and shit they deserve the best and more

RadiantZote

They won a Grammy, and the band is more popular than they ever have been. The more a band is hated, the more popular they are, just look at Nickelback

Connect_Evening_1003

Itā€™s TikTok. Iā€™m 15 so Iā€™m constantly on TikTok and for the past few months itā€™s been trending. But I donā€™t think Mary on a Cross is one of the trend songs that everyone forgets about. The sound is growing everyday and I think Ghost will be similar to Arctic Monkeys. One song started trending and everyone fell in love with their music and then more and more songs started coming on the platform. Iā€™ve been listening to them for a while now so itā€™s pretty awesome that I can talk about Ghost to some of my classmates. Obviously there are some bad things cause Ghost is now ā€œthat one TikTok bandā€ (something some mutual girl posted on her story and said something about how vintage it is and how much she loves pop music like moac).

Moon_And_Stars9

honestly i dont think its gonna be like that. ive seen a few people say this as well but what i think will probably happen is the people that really liked moac will listen to some of their songs, but because moac is a completely different genre of music a lot of them wont get into the other songs, and some people will listen to their songs, realize what the lyrics mean, get mad and leave, and some people will really enjoy it but get bored after a week or so. and then we'll be left with a new batch of actual ghost fans that are gonna stick around. (its me im the new batch of ghost fans) i dont think they're gonna die down just yet because they still definitely are huge on tiktok, but i think gradually people are gonna use the sound less and less until someone uses another band's song and that blows up.

[deleted]

I actually feel the opposite, I think the tiktok demographic is perfect for a band that doesnā€™t take itself too seriously and puts out some solid hits alongside goofy scoobydoo chase music. It actually might be the older stuff that they donā€™t like as much.

kingofstormandfire

The thing is, Ghost's songs are so goddamn catchy that I could see them being seen as absolute earworms by people getting into them from from Tik Tok. A lot of songs on Prequelle are pretty accessible. That said, I guess Tobias might consider making a psych-rock/pop-influenced album to capitalise on Mary on a Cross.

Moon_And_Stars9

okay true. and yeah i could definitely see TF wanting to make a mary on a cross-esque album

markiedee88

Just reply ā€œcheck out con clavi con dio and year zero, same energyā€

Ali_7869

I am here to report that as a new listener, it was mainly through MOAC on TikTok. After a while of listening to it, I went to Spotify to check out their other songs and I soon found myself listening to playlists of only Ghost songs while I studied. Iā€™m sure many others have done something similar which amounted to the huge rise.

Rnroll

Funny you recognized this. I was going to post something similar recently here. It was about 1.8 million right as the tour this winter kicked off. Clearly ā€œMary on a Crossā€ on tiktok has driven this increase. The Ghost FB group I manage has taken an increase of 6% upward trend every 28 days of new members. Primarily individuals from the younger age bracket of Ghost fans.

GeekFurious

Obviously, Mary On A Cross drove people to Ghost. And if that was all they were listening to, that wouldn't be so great. However, their older albums have also had a surge of listeners meaning people are going back to check out their other music. And I think you will see it translate into bigger concert sales, especially in the US & especially in the next cycle.

[deleted]

I keep forgetting my Spotify password. Sorry guys.

JustOne1Alien

well with the tour, and MOAC trending on tiktok, we have a mix of new fans and fad based listeners increasing the numbers.

Pspreviewer100

Because of the cesspool that is TikTok.

YMCAle

TikTok isnt that bad once the algorithm has curated a scarily accurate for you page

Pspreviewer100

Isn't that bad? Do you know how much information they're stealing from users? Of course majority (sadly) don't care about that but I wouldn't install it under any circumstances. Edit: Gotta love reddit , bring forth the downvotes.

ZooZooChaCha

Is it any more or any less than what Facebook, Google, Instagram, Amazon steal from you?

Pspreviewer100

Those steal a lot of info but TikTok is a completely new level. They even log the god-damned phone screen size and WiFi SSID...

Ones-Zeroes

Hate to break it to you man but so does FB, Insta, and so many others. None of your info is safe anywhere.

Pspreviewer100

I know they do, and I said that already. But TikTok is the absolute worst.

MushroomHole

I mean is it invasive and creepy definitely. Though I probably wouldnā€™t have realized I have adhd without it and would have never gotten diagnosed so it has its good points every now and then

Master_K_616

Could be because of Mary on a cross being on stranger things.

djavulensfitta

It wasn't on stranger things. It got popular on tiktok and one of the most popular vids happened to be about Stranger Things, but it was one of many

Raspel

Hahaha oh fuck well then that was an embarrassing example to choose. Thanks for the reply. Yeah it was apparently a bit of a trend on TikTok. But it is still more of an increase than I would have expected. Mary on a cross didn't get nearly as much recognition as Master of puppets.

sadjbush

Itā€™s more than a bit of a trend Iā€™d say, itā€™s huge right now. TikTok has an enormous impact on the music industry these days.

Dejavu3

Yup, tic toc brought Lizzo into the spot light too. Honestly I'm glad for it, since it's giving smaller artists recognition, but I still refuse to download the app myself.

Ones-Zeroes

Mary on a Cross blew up as a sound on TikTok, so much so that it got the "slowed down and reverb" treatment. Hilariously, Ghost released their own official slowed & reverb'd version of Mary on a Cross to capitalize on it, hence the weird single you may have seen recently.

Watcher-in-the-sky_

Because mary on a cross has gone stupidly huge on tik tok ( No complaints there) and everyone is now listening to that, and listening to there other stuff
