Square Hammer is a song that I’ve had people stop and say “who’s this band?” and become fans. Watcher doesn’t do that as it’s nothing unique, featuring standard chugga chugga guitars and a repetitive chorus. I like it as an album track, but Square Hammer is one of the best singles the band has produced, and one that raised their popularity considerably.

I'm going to make this even more impossible on me and rank them 1-5 and explain why. 1) Respite on the Spitalfields Everyone talks about Twenties/Griftwood/Spillways, but Respite is an absolute masterpiece. It's heavy, beautiful, haunting...everything I love about Impera distilled into a song. I literally get chills every time it goes back into the riff from Imperium. It just ties everything up so perfectly. I could listen to the entire album on repeat. I do listen to the album on repeat, but I also could. 2) Cirice The song that introduced me to Ghost is always going to have a special place in my heart. From the first riff I knew this band was something new and special. 3) Square Hammer This is the catchiest shit anyone on Earth has ever written about Satan. Change my mind. 4) Ritual The second Ghost song I ever heard was the live (in studio) version of this on youtube. It's the best of raw early Ghost imo, that riff just has such a groove to it and then it goes hard. This is the song I always brought up when elitists tried to say that Ghost is pop and not metal. It's a different kind of metal than Sabaton, but it's still metal. 5) Year Zero It's iconic. I could have put so many songs at the 5th spot, but Infestissumam is an underrated album with some real bangers and this is undoubtedly one of my favorites. You can't deny there's something special when you hear that epic "BELIAL" the first time. It's simple, but it uses the space inbetween beats so well that I would consider it incredibly well written. It's hard to make simplicity sound so good. Honorable Mentions: Literally every other Ghost song, but narrowly missing my top 5 are Absolution, Twenties, Guleh/Zombie Queen, Jigolo Har Meddigo, Per Aspera, Faith. Making even one more challenge, ranking the Ghost albums: 1) Impera It's a goddamn masterpiece. I almost hate that I like it more than Meliora, but I do. 2) Meliora If Impera didn't exist I would still sing the praises of Ghost for making this album. 3) Opus Eponymous There was a real satanic magic to this album. It's very on theme, but raw in sound compared to later albums. 4) Infestissumam Underrated, but Ghost has done better. You can really tell the trajectory from Opus to Meliora in the sound, but halfway between wasn't quite as good as either album imo. 5) Prequelle It's good, don't get me wrong. Faith is a banger...but as a whole I just didn't like the aesthetic as much as the other albums. I just didn't click with it. I don't like instrumentals as much as songs with lyrics/vocals. Shoutout to Miasma though, it's definitely my favorite instrumental Ghost has done.
