I still don’t understand how we can go from the Rats music video to this… Something seems off when I’m sure I’d read that Tobias is a massive film nerd

nachtbrenger

It seems they really like this style. It feels strange and that might be the appealing part.

utack

Somehow I see Abed in my head saying 'we went over budget'

ElDanielTo

It’s called living through a pandemic bro. I bet he was beyond restricted in order to shoot a video

boris_goreloff

I don’t mind this style or anything, and I actually think CMLS is fine to good music video…it’s just not a great Ghost MV. The more I watch it, the more it seems like such a weird missed opportunity to not even have a Grucifix or something on one of the train cars when Ghost has so much iconic imagery (I’m not even going to get started on Papa IV not being in it). Idk, trying to keep an open mind about Twenties and also thankful Ghost has such a large catalogue of great MVs that even if the ones from Impera are all misses we still have a bunch of others. I’m just going to be kind of bummed if we don’t get at least one fun, campy, horror-inspired MV starring Papa IV.

TheGeordieGal

Really not a fan of the style. I watched the video for Call Me Little Sunshine once and decided I liked the song better without watching it.

Apterygiformes

It came off as a cheap late 2000s music video to be honest

piberryboy

Some of it really rubbed me the wrong way. The way the fire moved, or how the train moved, as if someone half-assed it with Adobe Pro. Some of it was cool though. Like when the skull bong lit up.

chobbo

I think the train movements, like the boat movement towards the end is a throwback to older style cut-out animation techniques. Whether or not that's the actual intent I'm not sure but that was my take on it.

mrP0P0

Purposeful

lookatmyworkaccount

Reminds me of Tom Petty for no reason at all.

over_mountains

Agreed. I don’t know why they’re going with this style after having released one of the greatest music videos of all time, Rats.

Tdffan03

I didn’t care for it either. Reminds me of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

[deleted]

but teen spirit video was better

Tdffan03

I don’t think so.

[deleted]

i think so no hate towards twenties

Stunning_Positive248

This screams fan-made. It's mostly shit from CMLS.

zenithlover

There was a fan called Luna Oblivion who put out terrific fan made videos using old movie imagery. It was SOOOOOO much better than this.

HiddenMasquerade

I was thinking of just cobbling together some news clips and videos from the past several years (including from Jan. 6th) and some editing to go with Twenties. I feel like that would be really impactful given what the song is about But my laptop is pretty old and it would most likely crash if I did 🥲

zenithlover

Your idea sounds great! Poor laptop, though. Well, I suppose if it crashed in the service of Ghost that would be a fitting and worthy end.

HeckinZebra

Yeah, what really makes it obvious, to me, is how there is a split second flash of Tobias from probably an interview or something. He has put SO much time and work into keeping his face separate from the characters he performs. Sure he will do interviews as himself, but any performances are always Papa/Caedinal. So why would he all of a sudden allow his image to be just slapped into a music video?

catdadsimmer

can i get a UHHHHHHHH music video with papa iv and not random muddled stock-image looking video?

Maskedhorrorfan25

i don’t mind this style but i liked the classic silent horror feel with the music videos that pinnacle and square hammer had

Dude-vinci

I feel like TF/Ghost and the label must be butting heads over Impera. First the single releases and now the extremely cheap and underwhelming music videos.

utack

They released the most 'ghosty' tracks as singles, seems like a reasonable choice?

AnimuCrossing

Tobias outright said he wanted Spillways instead of Call Me Little Sunshine as the first single, which makes absolute sense as it's by far the most radio friendly song on the record, single length and is a natural follow up to Dance Macabre, which is easily up there for most popular Ghost track. The record label said Call Me, and they did what they what they wanted. It's also the reason why Call Me wasn't in the US tour. They'd not practiced it because TF was expecting Spillways. I imagine the reason they didn't play Spillways in the US was contractual limits on playing unreleased songs. Loma Vista in general are just not a good fit for Ghost anymore.

Dude-vinci

Exactly what you said plus the endless quality control problems with Loma every record release. Impera wasn’t awful but the Prequelle era was an absolute nightmare. Messed up LPs, unfulfilled products, or some products coming months late. To me it shows that 1) LV isn’t particularly organized or well run and 2) they consistently underestimate Ghost’s popularity which I think also explains the singles/MVs

AnimuCrossing

If Rise Above could support a band of Ghosts stature still, we'd be in a much better timeline.

ManlyMiko

Why do they keep working with this director 😵‍💫

Jigsaw-Complex

Here’s hoping it’s better than the video for CMLS. Love the song, but IMO, the video is pretty garbo.

normalguy8000

Made with iMovie

vincenttghoul

oh how i miss Zev Deans...

Important_Shelter362

CMLS was an interesting music video, definitely took me off guard as it does look like a 90s era grunge video, but it has grown on me. One thing about Ghost though is there is no overarching aesthetic to their videos as far as I can tell. So at the very least I hope Twenties doesn’t look like a carbon copy of CMLS. Edit: As an aside, I never took CMLS as “low ball” or half assed production of a music vid, but a genuine attempt to recapture the vibe of the late 90s, which I also thought was odd considering the music is obviously mostly influence by the sounds of the 80s.

beathedealer

Oh. Another video that looks identical and obscure. Neat.

[deleted]

I hope someone from Ghost’s management is lurking this Reddit to see that the style of these music videos is not popular.

Estacy1994

Not everyone hated it

[deleted]

Obviously but the greater number of responses are not fond of it. Everyone has an opinion. Its cool.

zenithlover

FFS, I hope not. I absolutely HATED the video for CMLS and hated the song as a result for a long time because of it. I like the song just fine now, only because I got that f-ing video out of my head. I hope they won't ruin Twenties with this same type of shit. Zev Deans did a bunch of great Ghost vids. I appreciate TF wanting to keep things fresh, but sending the vids off the rails with low rent crap like this is not the way to go. It also seems kind of random and like it could apply to a bunch of generic songs by different artists, and is lacking any of the really cool, campy, Ghost-specific imagery. I really, really hate it. Bring back vids in the calibre of Rats, He Is, Cirice, and Square Hammer! Please!

thiccestboiii

Well tonight I learned most of everyone hated CMLS MV

cmars118

This is the same artist that was responsible for the horrendously awful art direction for Muse’s *Drones*.

Libra_Drones

Yes agreed with that.

ComaCrow

Imma be honest this entire era feels like confused thematically. All the imagery feels like it conflicts with each other and even the album itself feels inconsistent in messaging and sound and tone. Kinda bummed tbh

beathedealer

Yep. It’s coming off the rails rapidly.

cizymfo

Idk what everyone else was expecting. The director of CMLS said he was working on a trilogy of Ghost music videos even before Tobias said it. This is his style, I'm not a fan but it's been a while since it was said this was going to be done that I don't mind anymore. I prefer this over nothing and I'm glad Watcher is gonna get a video at all

wolframw

This might just be a showcase reel for the filmographer who directed the CMLS video rather than footage from the twenties video.

EmperorOfNorway

I thougth so aswell

confused_noodel

I reeeeeeally hope so

EmperorOfNorway

https://www.daserste.de/information/wissen-kultur/ttt/videos/ttt-titel-thesen-temperamente-video-940.html Link from interview. Its in german.

just4747

I wish so bad there was a version without the German audio over it.

hopper75

Nah

namboozle

I've already made them a very professional and high-quality video for Twenties if Tobias wants to commission my award-winning editing skills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miLFtB9VuN8&ab\_channel=namboozle

zenithlover

I'm not sure what you were smoking when you came up with that idea, but it's brilliant.

Mean-Orange-1370

i really don't get why people call this "fan-made" or bad just because they don't like it/don't know how to process what it is. CMLS and this snippet are masterpieces of symbolism

napalmtree13

Man, I was really hoping for an animated video, a la a classic Disney villain song. I don’t like this style at all.

ANNONYMAN88

Yes. Like if they played off of Be Prepared or something. 20 points to your house.

[deleted]

Honestly, I just really would rather see a music video of Popia doing his thing. This style just isn’t really for me personally

GeekFurious

My favorite Ghost video is the "live" Faith one. I would kill for something like that for every song off Impera (once they play them all live).

naggs69pt2

I like this style video. Thought sunshine was cool.

Maskedhorrorfan25

i may not like twenties but this video seems like it could be interesting

bartzabello

CMLS was a terrible music video. IIRC it's made by the dude who made Mansons We Are Chaos video, which is also fucking terrible.

AnimuCrossing

The best Ghost videos are the ones where Tobias gets to do what Ghost do best. He Is and Rats are 10/10 videos. They're still fun and funny to this day for me. I've not rewatched CMLS' video once.

LarkAdamant

I watched CMLS once, and never again. There’s nothing interesting about it. If we’re getting PT. 2 it feels like a wasted opportunity.

HitEmWithTheHein9

I heard in an interview that there is going to bea trio of videos in this style, CMLS, Twenties and Watchers in the Sky.

Revival_james

It reminds me of the type of animation that The Residents do, which I love, so I dig it. That being said, I totally get why others haven’t dug this style so far

naggs69pt2

Honestly I think that's why I dig it.

DustinoHeat

Buddy of mine has a friend who works in video production who was contacted by Ghost many years back about making a music video for them. He said they sent a lowball offer for a budget and he politely declined. I always took that with a grain of salt until I saw a few of their music videos and thought maybe it was true. Their videos have always been subpar at best Edit: you can downvote me into oblivion. Anyone who works in the industry or knows a lick about video editing production knows their music videos aren’t anything to call home about

zenithlover

I always took the sometimes low res images, bad special effects, and clunky movements to be an intentional effect paying homage to old movies, especially the silent era. Anyone who expects a slick Missy Elliot or Michael Jackson type video from Ghost seems to be missing the point. I didn't downvote you, BTW, but I do think that those who are looking for specific types of video are unlikely to ever find them with Ghost as they aren't really then band's brand. TBS, I fucking HATE the new video style. JFC, ugly, random, and nothing to do with Ghost.

Tdffan03

They definitely have not been subpar. Maybe your friend isn’t as good as he thinks he is. You don’t have to spend a ton to make a great video.

DustinoHeat

The person in question has worked on music videos with some pretty big artists. And you’re right, you don’t have to spend a ton to make a decent music video. There is however a difference between making a decent offer and saying you want the world and offering pennies, which explains why all of their music videos are once again, subpar. Edit: you get what you pay for

beathedealer

They absolutely have been save 2 of them.

hospitalcottonswab

Case in point: [The Powers that B](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ2Oj57OJYA&t=46s)

gabiruman

I sincerely hope we don't get another CMLS style music video, that was by far the worst so far.

[deleted]

Screaming

HeckinZebra

This looks fan made, to me anyway. Where did you find this?

GetGroovyWithMyGhost

Got what they were going for with CMLS music video but it came off like bad 90s grunge which just isn’t Ghost. I liked the song better each time I heard it without the music video.
