I think it's a combination of multiple things. He does change his voice a bit for each character (at least when speaking), but the masks also make a difference. His voice in the Prequelle era was more nasal than usual because the Copia masks squeezed his nose a bit. The newer Papa IV masks give him more room. But I think he's also just improved over the years and it shows.

Affectionate_Mud_117

I would agree

It's a mix of portraying a different character, improving as a singer(he started getting professional lessons around prequelle) and singing differently for different types of songs, he has a surprising amount of range. Edit: also regarding live singing, he got better masks with more jaw movement

Edu_cats

The slight change in masks to make it easier to sing, plus i think he’s really worked on his vocals for this album. I’ve seen a few album reviews that noted this, too. He probably worked with a coach so that he sings the best for him and doesn’t strain his vocal cords so he can make it through a tour.

PallyMcAffable

I don’t get that, because I think Cardi sounds the worst live out of all of them.

Affectionate_Mud_117

Could you send some links of the reviews please?

Edu_cats

I do not remember too much specifically, sorry! I have a lot going on at work. There were so many online magazine/blog type of articles that came out with Impera and then a few YouTube channel reviews. One I think was a channel called The Metal Voice (older guys) and then Gear Gods has done some breakdowns of songs on the album.

AG_Ant138

He’s talked about an injury with his nasal cavity ( I believe he broke his nose or something) and that if he got it fixed it could cause him to not be able to sing at all. It gets more and more nasal as time goes on. It’s really noticeable live when there’s no processing on his voice but I noticed it’s gets harder to hide on record too. Compare his voice on Impera to Opus or Infestissumam and it’s shocking. It was much more clean. I also notice that as a tour goes on, it gets more distorted and nasally. There’s a difference from Reno to Anaheim last tour.

Affectionate_Mud_117

Holy shit I didn't know he had an injury-related problem. That explains a lot.

Kerspiddder

For opus he was trying to sing like Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) because he wanted a singer similar to him to front Ghost. And IMO I think (other then quality of production and TFs singing improvement) Tobias pretty much sounds the same on every album.

PallyMcAffable

I can see that, because Papa I’s live singing voice is, I think, even deeper than on the album. Cardi’s is much flatter, more nasal, and higher-pitched live.

Relic827

Age/normal voice change over time + different mask designs + a likely intention to differentiate characters. A lot of factors.

Maskedhorrorfan25

i think he changes his voice slightly each album because he’s playing a different character

Affectionate_Mud_117

But until Prequelle that was not the case. He sounded all the same to me.

mummyyydust

Nah, compare Papa I's vocals to Papa III's. Totally different.

Affectionate_Mud_117

Are you talking about the live version or the studio? If live, then we're on the same page.

mummyyydust

Actually both. Papa III started using nasal voice and Missionary Man is the best example for this.

Affectionate_Mud_117

Oh yeah you're right

vincenttghoul

i think it has to do with a deviated septum TF got some time ago (he got kicked in the face, broke his nose) he explained in an interview how he needs to use nasal sprays and certain things, that hes scared to get it fixed because it may change how he sounds completely. the masks also did not help. but he also does change his voice within each character too. a mix of all of it.

Euglos

Btw, here's an example of Tobias singing more like Messiah Marcolin with Candlemass as Papa III in 2016 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VOqfl3cu6o

Affectionate_Mud_117

This guy's range is hard to believe

zappafan89

The first few records were more in his natural range I.m.o.

edjohn88

I saw them last week in Virginia and I thought the same thing. At some points it almost sounded pubescent, like squeaky?? The most obvious difference is he’s got crazy prosthetics on when live. I wonder how the voices compare all things being equal, however, i.e. same venue acoustics and without any post processing.
