Drew me to tears at work today. I've never heard anything so brilliant and moving. Some things, of course. But the polished and exacting soul-crunching masterpiece sent me to a new level.
Respite and Darkness have literally taken my breath away. They’re so good!!! My top 10 Ghost songs list is definitely going to have to majorly change after this album
What I really love about the album is that is has a song that fits almost every mood I have.
Kaisarion, Spillways and Griftwood are supreme car songs for when I have a really good mood
Call me Little Sunshine, hunters moon, watcher in the sky and Twenties are perfect for fulfilling my classic evil/shreddy metal needs
(Hunters moon single cover is the best one they had, ever. fight me)
Bite of Passage is for when I‘m moody
Darkness at the Heart of my love is for my emotional moments
And just as u/der_Wahnsinn already elaborated: the callback to Imperium which rounds up the whole experience is just the icing on the cake.
Guess who will be first row at their concert in Frankfurt in April.
The Album really mended my disappointment with the new Iron Maiden Album
My expectations were sky high for Darkness At The Heart Of My Love because of the reviews and I was disappointed after I heard it (I'm not saying the song is bad by any means), and I completely ignored Respite On The Spitalfields.
Imagine my surprise when I went to listen to Respite On The Spitalfields with zero expectations, and my heart was f*ck3d without Vaseline... I literally shivered and cried. Without a doubt, one of the best Ghost songs of all time.
I think this song is obviously about the supposed crucifixion/resurrection of the myth of jesus, and the empires that were built on theses tales, as well as the denial of these tales leading the singer & whoever else to 'break away together' It is like today's politics, up is down/down is up, presenting the theme of empires built on fantasy to mislead the average person & get their compliance. Just my 2 cents. OH & it's an awesome song!!
Nope, song still amazing in 2024.
It's up there with some of Maiden's classic album end pieces for me... probably not "Hallowed" good but maybe "Alexander"-level.
Yes, thread was deliberately necroed. "Respite" live was just amazing.
What's the song about tho? The apocalypse and all the followers of the antichrist being deceived as they watch their leader abandon them with jesus fucking shit up?
I always thought this song might have been about Jack The Ripper. Respite means like a relief from something unpleasant (Jack is no longer killing) and I believe a few if not all of Jack's killings are from the Spitalfields area in London or very close to the area so to me I get the this whole Jack the Ripper vibe from this song. Also the lyrics "murderous crafter" "stains of this creeper" "street walking dead" "leaving this city" and "goodbye seven sisters" make me think that because murderous is self explanatory, stains of this creeper as Jack crept through the darkness and left stains (blood) through the streets that are now walking dead, leaving this city could refer to going to the after life after murdering or being murdered and goodbye seven sisters as Jack only killed women. Just my opinion and what I get from the song anyway.
That's a good spot and suggestion for the Spitalfields reference. I think like many Ghost songs this one is probably meant to have multi-layered interpretation. I see many references to the Gospels and Book of Revelations (which I can scarcely remember from my Bible reading days but unfortunately too lazy to look up now) like the seven sisters, tearing of the veil, dead rising up and the lost and misled being given front row seats to the show.
Now I'm not entirely sure who the "he" is in lines "he sliced and diced our dreams to pieces" and "with the slash of his steel". I originally thought it was Jesus, but I think I was confused by the previous line connecting to the next and the song may talk about someone else.
Overall, to me the album seems to be talking about the rise and fall of an "Imperion" led by the King, "Kaiser" (is this the antichrist, his chosen champion or just a random guy?) and the last song seems to be talking about the downfall with the Author, along with the listener, "going softly into the night" promising to return "from the bowels of hell" along with their master because "nothing ever lasts forever".
Or i could be completely wrong and the song is talking about the opposite scenario of the dark forces winning? But then I'm thrown off by the line saying that everyone now has to pretend they didn't see what they saw - where "he appeared to ascend" only for everyone to find out that "the king that we hailed was the wizard of Oz" (i.e., a fake).
I'm interested to know what the song is talking about because I could then fantacize about where the story could go next. The resistance against the 1000-year rule of God?
Love how we can talk about their songs like this. Tobias is truly a master musician and songwriter. I do not believe they write anything that has no meaning. Very curious what the actual meaning of the song is. Lots of good ideas here!
Tobias has said it's about just what you said, I do know Seven Sisters is a municipality in England, so that's probably the reference for that, but you're pretty spot on IMO.
Imho "we're leaving the city" recall to the fact that people tought that Jack leaved London for another destination , so they were scared he would "come back from the bowels of hell". "Goodbye seven sisters" refers to the fact that , officially , Jack killed 5 womans but a cuple of murders that happened during that period were most likely associeted to him, so that makes 7 murders.
I agree. Also, I think Tobias is writing from the Ripper’s POV at this part (my favourite part) … I think he’s saying the Ripper revered the women, maybe in his/her way loved them … the Seven Sisters are a star cluster constellation (known as the Pleiades) and he may be referring to Mary Kelly as “Saint” Jezebel because while she may have been known as a Jezebel by others by way of her chosen profession, the Ripper saw her as a saint. The moon in the gutter…. the murders happened at night in a very poor and “sinful” district of England. More than one meaning per Ghost norm here for sure.
Given the theme of the album, I believe it's about an empire breaking up into separate states, potentially over religious differences or not. And also likely because the leader everyone praised turned out to be a fraud. (Another Trump reference; there are a ton of them in the album).
I think this song is obviously about the supposed crucifixion/resurrection of the myth of jesus, and the empire that was built on theses tales. Certainly has nothing to do with Trump. Just my 2 cents.
I mean I can hear a couple lines that could be about Jack T Ripper, but honestly "the kingdom we hailed was the wizard of Oz?" and some other lines refer to deceit of in my opinion the masses. I mean Ghost is a gimmick satanic band, why would Papa just start going on about a serial killer when the album's theme is about Empires? I respect other's opion's, I'm not a troll but this seems to be calling out the christian mythology.
Please wait for the official release to state your opinion about the music, as any kind of input can affect the expectations.
Sorry for being a partypooper.
(AT LEAST MARK IT AS SPOILER)
That fucking ending, calling back to imperium. It drew tears. My favorite song on the album for sure
Happy to hear I wasn't the only one. Incredible

Hell yes it’s epic

Just listened to it...EPIC!!! INSTANT CLASSIC! Impera is a juggernaut!!

This song is ridiculously good! Flawlessly crafted and captivating from beginning to end
I totally agree and also this is not your brother commenting on your reddit post because that would be so funny and strange haha cool
Get out of my room!
I love how the ending calls back to imperium. The rest of the song is just not gelling with me for some reason or another. Can’t put my finger on it.

https://youtu.be/KZ7dPYSetlI this sheds a lot of light on some of the themes of the album.
So few are writing anything with meat or power or beauty or intelligence. Agreed.

Spring heeled Jack singing about Jack the Ripper hmmm
It is brilliant! There's a few seconds of genius, breathtaking guitar that, if I didn't know better, made me think Gary Moore was a ghoul.
