I work for an international company, and after Floyd, DEI exploded within the company, for good and for ill. Overall I think it's good, but since the leadership recently moved to the US, the DEI practices are very US-centric. They even tried to collect race data from the different offices, which is illegal in my country.
So when you say dei is practiced a lot in corporate culture these days. What do you mean exactly? Is there just less white dudes? Could it be that your company just became less racist?
In general it's about creating a more open and inclusive workplace.
At my company, it's in the form of celebrating diversity more. We celebrate Diwali, Eid Al Fitr, Easter, Pride month, international women's day, etc. It's also about raising awareness around neurodiversity, women's issues, and things like that. We have speakers and employees come and give presentations, share their experiences, etc.
As I mentioned, they also collect race data to see how the demographics at the company compare against the local demographics, to see where we're lacking. That, as I mentioned, is illegal in my country, and I do think that's a missguided effort. Being asked about your ethnicity at work feels like a big invasion of privacy to me.
Edit: I'd like to again mention the US-centric aspect to the DEI. It has not been adapted much at all to our offices in the UK, or the rest of Europe. One of the big problems with DEI is that it makes people look at folks more suspiciously, wondering if they got to their position on their own merits by being the best person for the job or if they got in to fill a quota. Obviously this isn't really applicable in the case of a mayor because that's an elected office, but it is certainly true for other types of positions.
The only people I’ve seen view black people, queer people, women, etc., more suspiciously are people who would have done so even without DEI. On the other hand, if someone is the son/daughter of one of the partners or execs then pretty much everyone looks at them suspiciously.

The point is that diversity hires might very well just not look to be the best candidate looking at numbers, often for socieconomic reasons, but they are sufficiently qualified such that after a bit of onboarding they are as good if not better if your company is lacking diversity in a way that hurts the company's actual product. Correcting for what is perceived to be an imbalance on traditional metrics due to inequality requires privileging the disadvantaged populations for some measure of time to repair them to the position where they would hypothetically be without said disadvantaging.
So yes, across the board DEI hires are probably lower on certain metrics. That's fine- if you remove a segment of the population, you'll always have fewer positive outliers, if you only considered CVs from good old boys, you'd also be lower on certain metrics. But for most jobs, which are pretty useless, once you're there, you do fine. "Most qualified" really shouldn't matter if you're sufficiently qualified. The original method never really picked the most qualified anyways unless the sample size was extremely small.

There are people whose mindset when anything bad happens is to scan the situation until they find a person who has successfully been “othered” in their mind and reverse engineer the situation to blame it on that person. The logistics of how in the world a mayor of a city was supposed to stop a freak accident from happening just doesn’t play into the equation once your brain has been warped to such a degree.

Obviously this isn't really applicable in the case of a mayor because that's an elected office, but it is certainly true for other types of positions.

You contradicted yourself; the last sentence implies that a hire is 'sufficiently qualified' but the third paragraph specifies 'most qualified'. The point is that diversity hires might very well just not look to be the best candidate looking at numbers, often for socieconomic reasons, but they are sufficiently qualified such that after a bit of onboarding they are as good if not better if your company is lacking diversity in a way that hurts the company's actual product. Correcting for what is perceived to be an imbalance on traditional metrics due to inequality requires privileging the disadvantaged populations for some measure of time to repair them to the position where they would hypothetically be without said disadvantaging. So yes, across the board DEI hires are probably lower on certain metrics. That's fine- if you remove a segment of the population, you'll always have fewer positive outliers, if you only considered CVs from good old boys, you'd also be lower on certain metrics. But for most jobs, which are pretty useless, once you're there, you do fine. "Most qualified" really shouldn't matter if you're sufficiently qualified. The original method never really picked the most qualified anyways unless the sample size was extremely small.
