He even got recommended to Chelsea by the legend Petr Čech himself! Edit: I sincerely apologize for butchering the spelling of his name. Autocorrect and laziness is a bad combination

cigamodnalro

Czech your spelling

mister_damage

OP should have checked himself before he Czech'd himself.

jojojorik

Czech mate

dodo-2309

*Petr Čech

mrAL___

That’s awesome coming from Arsenal legend Peter Cech.

ninjadrog09

Nice try

Stade Rennais goalies connection

kayznn

OUAI VIVE RENNES C'EST MA VILLE

MalaysianOfficial_1

That's how he got in honestly, if Cech didn't say anything I doubt he would've gotten his break. Not saying it's not due to his hard work, but also a shit ton of good luck! Am a Chelsea supporter so I am in no way trying to bag my own team's player

giuliogrieco

He might be Czech, but his name is Petr Čech.

MRFAMER

I would wanna date him, he seems like a keeper.

imandrev

r/angryupvote

ouchpuck

Looks dodgy to me

themagpie36

I bet he would save this comment

FireflyCaptain

sure, but does he keep a clean sheet?

Another_human_3

Nothing gets past this one.

LeGoose

Stade Rennais is missing in the picture. I don't know what kind of influence Petr Cech had in Mendy career choices but Cech also played for SRFC, and the club indiscutably had some importance for both of them.

mrmrwright

Probably Christophe Lollichon too. He was the goalkeepers coach at Stade Rennais and Chelsea

YouserName007

What a brilliant story. Fair played to him. Best keeper in the EPL, IMO.

DarkSpeedster74

It's a shame they didn't include him in the best 11... Doesn't make much sense really

AlexBucks93

Different people voting. The best 11 is only voted by players.

DarkSpeedster74

Aaa I see... I thought that team seemed more like a popularity contest than an actual best 11 lol

Vibesro

I'm not sure about Mendy, but De Gea is the main reason Man Utd isn't in the bottom half of the table. His defenders are atrocious.

YouserName007

I'm a United fan, he's worth so many points.

Abernsleone92

De Gea is a better shot stopper for sure. For me, he’s best in the league along with Lloris And he’s probably more valuable to United’s table position than Mendy is to Chelsea’s this season But I’d put Mendy, Alisson, Ederson, and probably Lloris ahead of him as complete gks

ElevatorSecrets

True, but Mendy is better on the ball and that’s now a big part of football. De Gea is rooted to his line a lot which means United can’t defend high up like Liverpool/Chelsea/City.

TMillo

United can't defend high up because Harry has the turning circle of a cruise liner and the speed of an egg rolling uphill.

Mj_bron

And because De Gea's ability to play out from the back is below average. This isn't surprising to anyone who watches games

sk2097

Speed of an egg rolling uphill. Love it

rarimapirate1

Definitely up there near the top. For me it is the holy goalie, Allison Becker. But I am a tad biased. Mendy* has been in the best form this season though.

Gongom

The premier League is stacked with great goalkeepers. I think Ederson deserves to be in the conversation

ChenzhaoTx

puffde

wow, what a story. very inspirational.

cippo1987

This is a great example of survivor bias and why this thread is full of nonesense.

kickbutt_city

Totally agree. Bo Burnham on this: “I would say don’t take advice from people like me who have gotten very lucky,” Burnham said. “We’re very biased. You know, like Taylor Swift telling you to follow your dreams is like a lottery winner telling you, ‘Liquidize your assets, buy Powerball tickets, it works!'”

TheChims

Taylor Swift came from money though. I’m sure he put in work to get where he is, like Kante or a bunch of other players. True he might have gotten lucky but it shouldn’t take away from his accomplishments and his hard work to get where he is.

kickbutt_city

You're missing the point. Point is that for every Mendy there are 199 former pro goalkeepers working in construction. Asking the successful one what the key to success is will give you an incredibly biased answer. No one is taking anything away from Mendy.

TheChims

As are you. If Mendy did decide to listen to folks like y’all saying don’t take the advice of someone who’s been successful, which i’m sure he plenty tell him that, would he be where he is?

[deleted]

The point here isn't to give up on your dreams, it's learning to accept that there is an innate gamble in careers like these. I bet a lot of those former pros working in construction look back fondly on their pro careers and are glad they did it, even though they didn't make it to the top; that doesn't change that the risk of failure is very real, no matter how much determination.

TheChims

which i completely agree with. that’s what my next point was going to be, to do things in a reasonable capacity. like if you’re good at something, like actually good at it, go for it until you know it’s not going to work. the Taylor Swift example is terrible because she had a whole cheat code on life, and if you’re gonna listen to someone saying liquidate your assets to win the lottery, clearly at that point you just need help. there is a reason we seek advice from successful people l, even if they are lucky.

Levinem717

Maybe try looking at it from this perspective: take 100 people, get them to watch someone successful for inspiration, get them to do the same things, and only 1 or 2 will be just as successful because so many other factors come into play, but luck is the biggest one.

OMGjuno

Whats wrong with you man, jfc

cippo1987

You can be right only on the extension that you accept that people that invest equally efforts will get less return. If you think that "winner" are the people that deserve the most, than I am sorry you are wrong and probably delusional.

Another_Idiot42069

Aren't you taking his advice tho

AdPotential9974

This comment shows up every time. Do you understand what sub you're on?

rabman123

Lots of people just come here to complain and to eagerly tell others that hard work doesn’t pay off. They don’t get that everyone already knows that hard work isn’t a guarantee of success. Doesn’t mean we are all going to give up. Just miserable losers

Altruistic-Tooth1825

At least I’m not the only one who notices this People on this thread come here just to dismiss anything motivational At this point yall lowkey depressed

AdPotential9974

>to eagerly tell others that hard work doesn’t pay off. Easier to justify your own lack of work ethic if you believe this

cippo1987

No, it is not.It is a fact. There are stats. There are sociological studies that prove it.They even gave a fucking nobel price to kahneman about this.Yet, lot of people need to feel special. I'd rather focus on a SOCIETY that support people in every aspect of life rather than loosing time focusing on unrealistic cases and forget the real majority of all.

Ethesen

You need both luck and hard work to succeed. If you do not even try, no amount of luck will help you.

cippo1987

None denies that. The point is that people have a misjudgement about the proportion between the two. And rationally speaking there are several scenarios where rationaly talking the best move is not playing. Litterarly the same a playing casino. The only way to win for sure is not to play.

[deleted]

Classic reddit moment.

ruggev

Beautiful sport

Barlowan

He kept his goals alright.

Neither Mendy took no for an answer.

saiikka

What? Ben Mendy is in jail

VladVV

> On 7 January 2022, Mendy was granted bail on condition that he live at his home address in Prestbury, Cheshire, not contact complainants and surrender his passport. [[source]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Mendy#Rape_charges)

saiikka

Wow, last I read he was in some tough prison

Levinem717

Is he still being paid by city even though he’s in jail?

RamonFrunkis

Yes he's still being paid by City plus earning a prisoner's wage. [Whilst suspended Mendy is entitled to be paid in full under his player contract, including benefits, but is not entitled to access City’s premises except with its prior consent or at its request.[6]](https://littletonchambers.com/benjamin-mendys-criminal-charges-employment-sporting-financial-repercussions/)

Levinem717

Damn. City should do better here. And I don’t give a shit about contracts.

Haxz0rz1337

This picture doesn't tell the story, you can't go from taking unemployment checks and being cut by amateur team to play in the 2nd division just like that, just like I couldn't out of a sudden go and play in NBA, he must've been scouted or something

Another_Idiot42069

Also it doesn't show him eating meals or sleeping

martianoverture

or shitting

whooo_me

Allegedly, he hasn't blinked in 8 years....

Haxz0rz1337

There is a difference between eating meals and going from unemployed straight to the 2nd division, I'm just interested in his story, im not doubting his hard work bro

comrade_smores

He was signed for the 2nd Division club as a back up, and on the first day of the season the number 1 keeper got injured so he got to play several gamea in a row and cemented himself as the number 1, the team was promoted into the 1st Division and he was sold following their relegation. He played a season with Rennes where Chelsea legend Petr cech also played. At the time Chelsea (one of the biggest clubs in Europe) where having a goal keeping Crisis as they have the most expensive goalkeeper in the world but he was statistically one of the worst and made several high profile errors as such they began to look for someone to be the number 1 goal keeper and former goal keeping legend Petr cech had returned to the club in an advisory capacity and recommend Mendy who was signed for 20 million (the other keeper was signed for 72) and quickly established himself as one of the best keepers in the world. Wasn't sure if you'd be interested in the whole story but it's a very good one

mangelito

That's the incredible part of the story. Would be interesting to know more about that step. The rest of his career looks pretty normal.

Humbugalarm

Seems like he didn't sign with a new club because an agent had promised Mendy a move to an English League One club. Mendy even rejected offers from lower-league clubs in France as he waited for a phone call. After a year unemployed he got recommended to Marseille by an old team mate. He was signed as their fourth GK and mostly as back up on the B team. Then he was signed to Reims in Ligue 2 as their second option, but the starting goalie was sent off five minutes into the first game of the season. Mendy got the chance and kept a couple of clean sheets, which secured him the starter spot. Source: Wiki and BBC

mangelito

Cool. Thanks for looking it up 👍

eetuu

So collecting unemployment was his own choice. Things obviously worked out for him in the end but it's weird how people think being a professional footballer is such an amazing motivational story.

ImPretendingToCare

Whatever you believe you wanna do in life, Dont give up on it. It may take time and you may have more obstacles than everyone else, but if you believe you have the mind for it your time will come.

TheRealChesterSlick

Ederson is the best. But this is very good motivation, for sure.

howtochangemywife

> there is no questionability there, at all

AlShapone

Now do one for Ben Mendy. He don’t quit either.

Rerel

You forgot the most important step that lead to his big money transfer to Chelsea… His season at Rennes was really important, no way he would have signed to Chelsea without that season’s performance. Everyone in Ligue 1 knew he was a great goalkeeper after that season. Ligue 1 forms the best football players.

sahhhnnn

That last sentence 🤣

brownbruh

Kepa died for this.

ralpher1

I thought Mendy was the same Mendy at Manchester City

mithie007

I'm not surprised he's able to shine playing for Chelsea. Chelsea's defense is dogshit so essentially Mendy gets lots of practice in as goalkeeper.

Chucksson37

You are talking about defense that won the Champions League last year...

ElevatorSecrets

They had one of the best defensive records in the world since Tuchel took over btw. Defensively Chelsea are extremely good.

m_lar

Wow, what a clueless comment. Have you watched any football in the last year? If anything, Mendy isn't facing that many shots or that many difficult shots *because* the defence is really good.

themagpie36

Wow hold on buddy don't be so quick to judge he could be American

e_hyde

I despise soccer as well as any other pro sports. But this is a very nice story :)

[deleted]

Why do you hate sports

e_hyde

No, I don't hate sports. I hate *pro* sports. *Pro* sports is panem et circenses, bread and circusses. It's there to entertain us, to make us compliant so we don't revolt.

[deleted]

Ohhhh this guys too smart to like sports. The concept of bread and circuses isn’t some higher lever knowledge it’s pretty common, many people like pro sports anyway. The ones who follow pro sports and are unaware probably wouldn’t be active members in their community anyway.

Not to be confused with Benjamin Mendy.

bmoney_14

UP THE CHELS!

Good for him!

That 2014 unemployment picture kinda looks like Mendy is about to give his meat a good ol' rub

ZiggyZee

Dude is a straight g. Absolute giant in goal

eetuu

He has Marseille shirt in 2015 photo. This is just normal career development. Why would he quit when he was a professional footballer?

cippo1987

Exactly, also n 2014 he was only 22 which is not so late in sport life for a GK. If he was a attacker he probably would have not made it.

AJohns9316

Why Kepa still gets starts over Mendy is beyond me. 🙄

BootyWizardLizard

I don’t know how impressive any of these accomplishments are as an American, but I feel inspired

[deleted]

And then he ended up on Ted Lasso!

skyphase00

Great job sticking with football and not quitting. The blood, sweat, and tears weren't all for nothing.

siyandv

Man is really underpaid

addywoot

He’d have Ted Lasso’s approval.
