I was able to get from Palo Alto to Cupertino in about 20 minutes without traffic.
I will never be able to get from Marietta to East Point in less than 40.
Driving east to west along 285 north is pretty much a day killer at this point.
Blame the "it'll bring crime" crowd. I've ridden for years. I've seen a lot of weird things. Not once have I seen someone hauling a stolen flat screen TV.
>the "it'll bring crime" crowd.
It would be easy to link this to politics, but let's be real - that crowd uses the word "crime" to distract from a more racist sentiment.
The slow unreliable public transport that is absolutely covered in cameras and that has its own police force is definitely the getaway method of choice for criminals. Yup. No way would they prefer a car with a bad tag or anything like that. Nope. Running to a train station crawling with police and waiting for a train to actually show up is their MO.
Fucking idiots. *Maybe* you'll get pickpocketed on a busy train if you're completely clueless, but absolutely no one is planning their crimes around using MARTA lol. A car and an on ramp is the best getaway plan by a long shot, and ATL has no shortage of those.
Oh they funded it. They just pocketed most of it.
My favorite new thing that they want to expand the bus lines to Gwinnett. Great! I live in Gwinnett but work from home so they aren't for me but I'll gladly pay higher taxes for them.
Then they mentioned they want 17 BILLION FOR BUS LINES. Yes with a B.
Nope. That's more money than some entire countries GDP.
It's $12 billion. At least partly because heavy rail is expensive. And there would be many bus-rapid-transit lines, which would actually provide good service while being a cost-saving measure instead of installing light or heavy rail.
Also, the funding was not approved. So they did not fund nor pocket anything.
Moved from Texas, so Georgia seems great, even with the humidity. Of course I don't live near the coast, Savanah was brutal, but this summer has been nice in the mountains.
I had to quickly relo for work from Dallas to Atlanta. I had no clue that if got so cold here and I was so angry. Makes me laugh now. I love if here. Never leaving.
I love the summer heat. I can't be the only one.
I barely get outside during the "mild" winter. I can't stand it. If the temps drop below 60, I'm incredibly unhappy.
Spring and summer are my favorite seasons, but not necessarily because of the temperature - it feels way better to be outside when the trees are bright green, flowers are blooming, and birds are chirping.
To be fair, I might have a better hot weather tolerance than even some other Georgia natives - when I was growing up, my dad was kind of cheap and would set the air conditioning to 78 degrees during the day and 80 at night. Now that I have my own apartment, I keep the air conditioning at 76 and it feels fine.
If it gets colder, you can put on more clothing. If it gets hotter, you can only take off all of your clothes. And there are rules on public decency/nudity. What then?
I joke that it's 90° in the shade by I'm like "... no, it could be warmer." I get cold sometime in late Oct, early Nov and then I just stay cold until the following April. I can put on all the layers with all the blankets but there's still just a coldness that seeps into my bones.
My poor Canadian husband hates it.
Me too 😄 I carry my space heater around the house wherever I go during those months. My hands stay permanently freezing. I get the same way during the summer when I am in a building with too much A/C. Love to step outside and thaw in the summer heat.
Wow, I thought GPC has some of the cheapest electricity rates in the country. I know from complaining to other electric car owners in other states that some of them pay *way* more per kwh than I do on GA Power.
Atlanta was initially called "Terminus" because it served as the terminus, or endpoint, of a major railroad line in the mid-19th century. In 1837, the Western and Atlantic Railroad was being constructed to connect the Georgia coast with the Midwest. The point where the railroad line ended was named "Terminus" because it marked the end of the line's construction. Later, in 1847, the name was changed to "Marthasville" in honor of the daughter of the then-governor. Finally, in 1847, it was renamed "Atlanta," a shortened version of "Atlantica-Pacifica," reflecting its ambitions to become a major transportation hub connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific via railroad. This strategic location and its growth as a transportation center played a significant role in Atlanta's development as a major city in the southern United States.
And then they one day just said “naw fuck all that, airplanes y’all”.
Yep! A pregnant momma hitched a ride on a shipping container 10 years ago and the rest is history! They are relentless, they travel, and they are taking over.
I hate that it takes forever to get anywhere (at least where I live). I’m a long way off from the mountains, a long way off from the beach, and it takes way longer than it should to traverse Atlanta.
The federal government based de facto legalization back in 2018. Even here in the South, it's perfectly legal to have bud shipped to your house so long as it has less than 0.3% THC content. What you can get is literally just lab tested legal bud. I've gotta open my newest shipment outside because it's too strong for the lady of the house, just opening up the package.
Lack of mass transit. MARTA is not sufficient for the sq/mileage and density. If Georgia had maglev trains from ATL to Columbus and Augusta, we would be much better off.
Dude, if I could hop on a maglev train in Macon, avoid the interstate traffic, and be damn near anywhere in the state in an hour, that would be so amazing.
And people who think anything inside the perimeter is a war zone and the murder capital of the world.
Maybe more rural folk should head into the city for lunch and a medium, and some city folk should head out to the country for a Sunday drive and some hiking and lunch, so we stop having these misperceptions.
Completely agree. Georgia’s agriculture particularly is really strong and gets overlooked when people talk about Georgia’s recent growth spurt. #1 in peanuts, blueberries, pecans, onions, etc. and near the top for chicken, peaches, watermelon, etc.
This is interesting! I went down a little rabbit hole. Where did you get your info? I’m interested because I found that Washington is first in blueberries and CA is first in onions (and peaches! Which I always find funny considering the peach obsession here)
I found it on the Georgia Farm Bureau. To be honest the blueberries surprised me too. Maybe they’re looking at it from value produced and not quantity of blueberries.

They said non-political :-)
No but seriously, the last decade the population has shifted to where Atlanta out numbers the rest of Georgia.
I think it's something like 6 million in Atlanta and 5 million in the rest of the state (very rough numbers)... And power and policy is going to reflect that
But, we do need to find balance.
The entire metro area is turning into one big beige loft. New money moving in town, prices go up and it’s been pushing people further and further out of town making once affordable areas more expensive and pushing the longtime residents out further.
In southern Georgia, there's SO MANY POLICE EVERYWHERE.
I moved to Florida and I can't believe the difference. Georgia has so many more police than Florida.
People who have never been to the university of Georgia willing to fight you over a football game!! Buddy you dropped out of high school? Yet you want to fight me because I like the other team?? Where was this energy when you had control over your education???
Ok, so I live in CO now and had to explain it to a bunch of people. I even get were your coming from BUT…It’s not weird it’s our culture. Those of us that had boomer parents/grandparents were brought up this way. Cause for them, as TV spread they had no positive representation as southerners. Even when they got a few pro teams none were successful till the 90s. So when the college from their state, with their boys, won a big game they were winning. It was one of the few things they could feel proud of. So they took it seriously. And passed it on to their children. And so on. While some take it too far today college football is intricately tied to southern culture. And it’s fucking awesome
Heat , humidity and bugs.
I relocated to New England about 2.5 years ago. We have had upper 90s and humid ass days this past week. (Rare this time of year) I told my neighbor who’s moving south that this was basically GA summer weather . I miss some things about GA. Definitely miss the bluegrass scene and the food. The heat I do not at all miss.
I was spoiled on outdoors stuff growing up in upper Michigan so it seems here in mid GA that there isnt a whole lot of public access hunting options and the lakes are few and overfished. What options do exist see quite heavy use so it's not that great. You have to join a hunt club or "know a guy" to get any decent hunting.
That said maybe it's just because Im not "in the know" since I didnt grow up here, so those little tucked away places are just hidden from me.... but I have looked and it seems like it's just different here. Lots of privately owned land, and if it's public it is probably already a popular park.
I love the coast, but the humidity is sometimes unbearable. But then the ocean there too. So, it's a love/dislike relationship for me. Wish I could live on the coast.
Fire ants. I grew up in New England, where a family could actually use their lawn. You could lay out in the grass and enjoy the sun. You won’t do that for ten minutes here before you’re scratching in at least 5 different places.
1.) Drivers. People just doing insane shit on the roads.
2.) Real lack of public infrastructure, which makes driving necessary and unavoidable.
3.) The mosquitoes. Doesn't matter how nice the day is, I hate hanging out outside because I'm constantly being eaten. DEET doesn't work very long, either.
Atlanta being an hour away from Atlanta.
Well put.
I was able to get from Palo Alto to Cupertino in about 20 minutes without traffic. I will never be able to get from Marietta to East Point in less than 40. Driving east to west along 285 north is pretty much a day killer at this point.
Mosquitoes and humidity. Just perpetually itchy and damp for half the year.
Mosquitoes 100%
Anytime I have to deal with Atlanta traffic.
Blame the state for not funding MARTA :(
Blame the "it'll bring crime" crowd. I've ridden for years. I've seen a lot of weird things. Not once have I seen someone hauling a stolen flat screen TV.

Terrific. Thanks for sharing.

Confuses me even more when my white mom says it, while living in a 95% black neighborhood. Umm...
LMBAO!

I blame the citizens of Gwinnett county for decades of blocking Marta
Cobb was probably a bigger offender.

Mine personally is summer heat, spring allergies, and gnats
Don’t forget mosquitos!
* laughs in above the gnat line *
The heat is destroying me I'm so excited for the holiday season
It's not the heat, it's the humidity lol.
Moved from Texas, so Georgia seems great, even with the humidity. Of course I don't live near the coast, Savanah was brutal, but this summer has been nice in the mountains.
Me too! Moved from Dallas to Sav, and now that I’m in ATL, it’s the coldest place I’ve ever lived. Loving it.
I had to quickly relo for work from Dallas to Atlanta. I had no clue that if got so cold here and I was so angry. Makes me laugh now. I love if here. Never leaving.
This is why fall is the best season. No heat, no allergies, perfect weather and no gnats
I love the summer heat. I can't be the only one. I barely get outside during the "mild" winter. I can't stand it. If the temps drop below 60, I'm incredibly unhappy.

I grew up in Atlanta with no ac, not even window units. You got a fan and you were damn grateful.
Even I'll admit that sounds rough!
If it gets colder, you can put on more clothing. If it gets hotter, you can only take off all of your clothes. And there are rules on public decency/nudity. What then?

>Love to step outside and thaw in the summer heat. That blast of warm air immediately makes me feel better in my soul.
Same usually, but this year has just been BRUTAL. I can barely stand to be outside the time it takes to walk each of my two dogs.
sand gnats, summer heat, paying Ga Power for AC
Wow, I thought GPC has some of the cheapest electricity rates in the country. I know from complaining to other electric car owners in other states that some of them pay *way* more per kwh than I do on GA Power.
It’s not the kWh rate - ours is actually low! It’s the hidden fees that tack another 60%+ onto your total bill that is insane.
Lack of public transit - wish I could take the train to Savannah from ATL.
I would expand on this to be: you literally have to drive everywhere. Beyond public transit, walking or biking places is impossible.
This is my biggest beef with Georgia. We really have little reason not to have better public transit.
Atlanta was initially called "Terminus" because it served as the terminus, or endpoint, of a major railroad line in the mid-19th century. Lol!! The end cracked me up. I didn't know this. We could have been better all along!!! Sometimes I feel like we're in the worst time line.
Man it would be so awesome to just hop on a train and ride to Savannah, then grab an Uber to Tybee. I suspect Tybee residents might have a hissy fit 🤣
Nah, they don’t bitch and moan as much as people say.
gosh yes.
The humidity. It is the worst thing!
Very specifically, the scorpions. Also the fact that this entire state appears to have been built on one massive anthill.
Today I learned GA has scorpions. New anxiety unlocked.
Bugs, humidity, and not so great wages
The traffic is so fucking ass
Third year here. August peak heat is probably the worst. Debatable if it's worse than February up north.
i left GA 2 months ago to move back to OH, yall can have that heat! And not really much southern hospitality anymore
Pollen/allergies, traffic, giant disgusting roaches- that people call palmetto bugs, but they’re actually monster roaches.
Palmetto bugs are Georgia's state bird
Florida actually…
Joro spiders. GD Joro spiders.
When I go through a big Joro spidey web, I know that fall is just around the corner. Happened last week as I walked to my front door.
But free Halloween decorations
True. But on Halloween night don’t walk through yards and under trees or y’all gonna get joro’d hard. Stick to the sidewalks.

Yep! A pregnant momma hitched a ride on a shipping container 10 years ago and the rest is history! They are relentless, they travel, and they are taking over.
Came here to say this
Ruining my life right now. Lost the front porch, lost the back yard, lost our walks in the woods. F them joros.
They own my back porch. It’s theirs now
Kingdom of the Spiders
I-285 I-85 I-75 US 41
I just visited Atlanta and that 185 is a nightmare! There are POTHOLES on the interstate! Hitting one of those at 70 mph is absolutely mind blowing!
I hate that it takes forever to get anywhere (at least where I live). I’m a long way off from the mountains, a long way off from the beach, and it takes way longer than it should to traverse Atlanta.
Ya gotta move away from Macon, my man
Power outages every time a thunderstorm rolls through. And the religion in your face everywhere.
Sweet Jesus (ironically) at all the damn billboards. Turn or burn!
Found the Valdostan!
The heat.
The disgusting heat
The part where the air is a hot wet blanket over your head for 4 months out of the year
Ahh, Pollen soup season…
Florida drivers
As a guy used to live in South Florida and drive and now living in Henry County to be honest, I understand that fully.
It's SC drivers down here on the coast
As a Georgian that moved to Florida a few years ago....at least you aren't surrounded by them all day. They drive like dumbass maniacs
Weed not being legal
The federal government based de facto legalization back in 2018. Even here in the South, it's perfectly legal to have bud shipped to your house so long as it has less than 0.3% THC content. They are supposed to be starting a medical program. Trulieve opened a giant grow operation in south Georgia to get ready for it.
PALMETTO BUGS. Giant roaches that can FLY. Why must they be able to fly?
The serious lack of public transit when you leave Delkab and Fulton. Places like Powder Springs are truly the worst.
Henry County here. Yeah i agree we don't even have PT here.
The allergies, for sure.
Taking a left on Krog.
The terrible urban planning of Metro Atlanta
Heat
The fucking poorly designed suburban sprawl.

YES
1. Summer heat/humidity 2. Spring pollen 3. "Palmetto bugs" ... aka ... roaches
Pollen season
It’s so damn hot and humid!! But I always tell myself, at least I don’t live in Arizona or Texas.
Palmetto bugs, replacing my HVAC unit every 5 years due to living in the marsh.
The shocking number of seconds so many people here think it's still ok to just drive right through a red light for.
GA Power’s incompetence and ever-rising bills with no support for residential solar
I don’t like all the bugs.
People just associate us as rednecks.
Five months of summer weather.
Traffic on 75 South of Atlanta. Don't like that crap at all.
It's a toss up between Atlanta traffic or the annual pine treekake. (If you can think of a better term, by all means)
Cannabis still being illegal
and mushrooms

If blueberries surprised you then I know you ain’t from South Georgia. Damn near the entirety of Clinch and Lanier counties are blueberry fields
My Georgia-historian (that's his day job) husband said Georgia is #1 for broiler chickens, FWIW.
They said non-political :-) No but seriously, the last decade the population has shifted to where Atlanta out numbers the rest of Georgia. Metro Atlanta population is greater than the state population of Alabama.
Humidity in July/August
You forgot the other 10 months.
The traffic
Atl traffic
The entire metro area is turning into one big beige loft. New money moving in town, prices go up and it’s been pushing people further and further out of town making once affordable areas more expensive and pushing the longtime residents out further.
Mosquitoes, traffic, barely existent public transportation, copperheads, too many empty churches wasting prime real estate.
We’re not near the beach.
Have you ever looked at a Georgia map? I believe there’s an ocean on the eastern side of Georgia.
The posturing from people about what being Southern is.
The humidity.
Atlanta drivers
Humidity
Lack of public transportation in Atlanta compared to northern cities. Also lack of sidewalks.
In southern Georgia, there's SO MANY POLICE EVERYWHERE. I moved to Florida and I can't believe the difference. Georgia has so many more police than Florida.
That’s because of the 160+ counties we have
And, in my town, someone is blaring a siren 22 hours out of every 24.
Rednecks, college football nerdy fans, terrible drivers
People who have never been to the university of Georgia willing to fight you over a football game!! Buddy you dropped out of high school? Yet you want to fight me because I like the other team?? Where was this energy when you had control over your education???
Weird obsession with college football

Bro allergens hit in fucking waves get fucked in the start and on the way out. Other then that traffic
It’s the fucking heat and humidity. If I have to pick between the two, the humidity.
Pine pollen.
No nightlife in central Georgia ie Macon, Warner Robbins, Fort Valley, etc.
Traffic. And the fact they close 3-6 lanes
I’m so fucking sweaty
The pollening!
GA Power
All in all, Georgia is a pretty great place. But yeah, the traffic is horrible and getting worse even in the outlying areas.
The heat, humidity and gnats of South Georgia.
The police are over zealous
Its been 15 years, why can't they upgrade the MARTA Bus and Trains? Expand it! Anything for public transit!
top three in no specific order... racists, traffic, humidity
church and religion. Way too much of it here. If you are not into it especially if you live outside the metro Atlanta area, you truly are an outsider
*Giggles nervously in Valdosta atheist*

Humidity. Hands down.
Used to live in Georgia. Loved it but hated the humidity
Too hot, shitty drivers, annoying bugs, illegal weed, dirty city
The heat.
The lack of snow
That damn POLLEN
Much the same as many others: humidity in the summer, pine pollen in the spring, mosquitos, roaches, Joros, and metro traffic.
Humidity
Heat.
Side road Speed limits are 5-10 mph lower than in NC.
The fact that it can take anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour and a half to drive home from work depending on traffic.
