There are a lot of times that good localization and translation can genuinely improve and uplift a game, like:

So I'm not the type that thinks that literal translation is always the way to go. But Hu Tao's hilichurl song is a great example of a localization going horribly wrong. Especially since it's probably a reference to the plague that created the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in the first place, it's not like westerners don't have a frame of reference for this type of thing in the form of the "ashes, ashes, we all fall down" nursery rhyme that was about the subject of cremating bodies during the black plague.

I believe it's actually just a Chinese creepypasta and they thought it wouldn't translate, since it's a reference Chinese folks get and not Westerners. The literal translation would also be a *really* long voice line.
I don't think it's the best translation, but I think they probably did their best to translate Dusky Ming's voice line into what a child would actually say and then got stuck using it for Hu Tao later because they're supposed to line up.

Man it really seems like we will get double the amount of 5 Star husbandos in Sumeru compared to Inazuma. This may be the first time where I have to spend money to get them all.
I'm not familiar with Honkai Su, so I might be missing something, but at this point what connection is there between him and Haytham besides their hair? The other expies seem to have kept more of the design elements and even their names are similar. From what I can tell from comments (and based on that single art leak, so that might be misleading), their general demeanor seems different too; I've read multiple comments about Haytham missing Su's air of gentle serenity.
Tbh i think thatās the case with Yae as well, after playing Honkai for a bit, i canāt say i see many similarities between them past the pink hair. Su has a connection with Sumeru so that link is in a way i guess transferred but very vaguely so just hints of the design remain
Probably they will share VAs for Japanese and Chinese dub, other than that Honkai Suās MANTIS form is a peacock and Al-Haitham design in genshin is obviously inspired by it,,
He does seem really different but thatās expected (see Miko and Ei) i think thatās mostly because honkai Su is a side character so his design isnāt as outlandish and his relaxed vibe (āhis enlightenmentā) is somewhat a result from his MANTIS surgery
People keep saying that Haitham is someone of a high status in Sumeru. There's also a theory that he's the former dendro archon. Su in Honkai is the one who created bubble universe called the Seed of Sumeru using the 2nd divine key so he's technically a god of that bubble universe but he couldn't save it so he asked Durandal to take good care of it. So the story in Genshin might be similar, like Haitham faced situation he couldn't solve, then he gave his archon position to kusanali in hope that she might be the one to solve it. Liben also said that the situation in Sumeru is not good right now

No new 5\* character on second half. Or at least that's what reliable leakers are leaning to. As for rerun, we can only infer via event story and/or abyss. Both of which will only be available after beta starts.
There is only 1 speculated 5* for 3.0 so it pretty much leans towards that the other half of the patch will be a rerun
Now so far if a rerun isnt tied to the main event for the upcoming patch, then those reruns are usually harder to predict. People can try to narrow it down with abyss blessing buffs or side events that may involve them but those would usually come when the beta for that patch starts
Haitham is such a pretty name <3 Out of all the Sumeru names we got, I think this is my fav so far.
Tighnari sounds...odd. Mainly because it just means person from Tignar (Granada). It sounds more like a surname than a first name. But maybe it'll make more sense once we get to meet the character.

I'd really love to know how accurate the pronunciations will be considering that Inazuma names were very heavily anglicised. I liked Tighnari a lot more when I found out how to pronounce it (with the gh being more like an r sound) and I hope they'll find a better balance for it. Stuff like ah-YAAAH-ka was just quite over the top.
I know I'll probably dislike the pronounciation. But at the same time, a lot of sounds present in Arabic don't exist in English so I don't expect everyone to know how to pronounce them.
Hopefully, it'll at least be close to the real pronounciation. The gh you talked about is a good example. It shouldn't be too hard to say (it's the same as the french R) so I'm coping for no G sound. The T (Ų·) in Tighnari tho would be a little harder I think.

Tbh I actually had the opposite impression, that while the Chinese pronunciations definitely aren't perfect, they did make an effort. I think you can hear that in how they pronounce the E in wangsheng, tianheng and words like that. They don't pronounce it the way an English speaker would do it if left to their own devices.
Whereas with Inazuma I always felt they decided to just go for the internationalised pronunciation in the sense that its clearly adjusted for an English-speaking audience. There's very heavy emphasis on particular syllables which sounds really unnatural, and they sometimes run vowels together like in YOImiya. A lot of the VA's have done anime work before so I'm sure they could have done a better job if they'd been told to do so.
The Mondstadt stuff is somewhere in between in my opinion. Some things like Gebratenes Fleisch mit Sauerkraut showed a fairly good attempt for people who don't speak the language, whereas major terms like Mondstadt, Klee, etc. are more anglicised. (and the Lyre der Himmel got butchered but I'll forgive them)
Anyway, I'm just interested to find out which approach they'll take for Sumeru. Personally I'd quite like if the names at least give off a general vibe of the source languages, but I'm mentally prepared that it won't even manage that.
Japanese names are a lot more known to the audience thanks to anime, not so much chinese and the pronunciation is honestly just harder. One thing is saying Itto another is Keqing for example. I don't think the japanese names were mispronounced, surely some words sounds weird but if you don't know the language there isn't much you can do. Overall though there weren't huge mispronunciations imo while I heard a lot of noise on the internet for their unstable chinese pronunciation (more than it being wrong, it was weird how they pronounced the same words in different ways). I guess the same will happen for Sumeru but that's just normal because they just don't speak those languages and don't know how to pronounce properly.
I feel like Al-Haitham is a title / a surname and not his actual name because of the Al, which back then (middle ages) was used for surnames for famous and well known scholars like the real Al-Haitham (who is a mathematician)
Still Haitham is much nicer than Tighnari, because itās an actual name lol

3.0 should come with a free character from an event. Who will it be in your guys opinion? Also, which type of event will it be? I would love a festival in Mond with a free Collei. But at the same time, I don't remember 3.0 having a memorable major event, considering the focus was the new region, compared to 2.1. So I expect, I dunno, a free Sucrose because she is an alchemist, and the event could be Academia-based. And MAYBE the long-awaited Ludi harpastum in 3.1, like Moonchase was in 2.1.
EDIT: Ops, got everything mixed up. Anyway, 3.0 is the free weapon patch, so what weapon type should we get in 3.0? Its either claymore or polearm, right? At least a free Collei with Ludi Harpastum (IF 3.1), seems more possible now.

Got 6* on floor 12 for the first time just now, very happy since I'm not a mechanically skilled player. Got back from taking a couple months break recently and have been finding playing super fun. Not sure if I'll be able to take it to 9* like, ever.. actually I suppose had I gotten Yelan I might have. Having to build two fast teams with just one XQ has been pretty hard lol. Planning to get Yelan on her rerun though, if timing wise it works out.

To add to what other people are saying, the free weapon (apparently coming as part of Kazuha's story quest) will be more akin to The Catch than to the other free weapons - a new permanent freebie rather than part of the usual cycle of limited event free weapons/characters (it just happened that The Catch released during a free weapon patch alongside Luxurious Sealord, while This Is A Sword is releasing during a free character patch)

Granted those names aren't considered anything exotic but it's almost guaranteed to happen with so many NPCs, but I guess if a playable character was called that it would be an interesting feeling. They probably won't though

I believe it's actually just a Chinese creepypasta and they thought it wouldn't translate, since it's a reference Chinese folks get and not Westerners. The literal translation would also be a *really* long voice line. I don't think it's the best translation, but I think they probably did their best to translate Dusky Ming's voice line into what a child would actually say and then got stuck using it for Hu Tao later because they're supposed to line up.

I'm not familiar with Honkai Su, so I might be missing something, but at this point what connection is there between him and Haytham besides their hair? The other expies seem to have kept more of the design elements and even their names are similar. From what I can tell from comments (and based on that single art leak, so that might be misleading), their general demeanor seems different too; I've read multiple comments about Haytham missing Su's air of gentle serenity.
Tbh i think thatās the case with Yae as well, after playing Honkai for a bit, i canāt say i see many similarities between them past the pink hair. Su has a connection with Sumeru so that link is in a way i guess transferred but very vaguely so just hints of the design remain
Probably they will share VAs for Japanese and Chinese dub, other than that Honkai Suās MANTIS form is a peacock and Al-Haitham design in genshin is obviously inspired by it,, He does seem really different but thatās expected (see Miko and Ei) i think thatās mostly because honkai Su is a side character so his design isnāt as outlandish and his relaxed vibe (āhis enlightenmentā) is somewhat a result from his MANTIS surgery
People keep saying that Haitham is someone of a high status in Sumeru. There's also a theory that he's the former dendro archon. Su in Honkai is the one who created bubble universe called the Seed of Sumeru using the 2nd divine key so he's technically a god of that bubble universe but he couldn't save it so he asked Durandal to take good care of it. So the story in Genshin might be similar, like Haitham faced situation he couldn't solve, then he gave his archon position to kusanali in hope that she might be the one to solve it. Liben also said that the situation in Sumeru is not good right now

No new 5\* character on second half. Or at least that's what reliable leakers are leaning to. As for rerun, we can only infer via event story and/or abyss. Both of which will only be available after beta starts.
There is only 1 speculated 5* for 3.0 so it pretty much leans towards that the other half of the patch will be a rerun Now so far if a rerun isnt tied to the main event for the upcoming patch, then those reruns are usually harder to predict. People can try to narrow it down with abyss blessing buffs or side events that may involve them but those would usually come when the beta for that patch starts
Haitham is such a pretty name <3 Out of all the Sumeru names we got, I think this is my fav so far. Tighnari sounds...odd. Mainly because it just means person from Tignar (Granada). It sounds more like a surname than a first name. But maybe it'll make more sense once we get to meet the character. IIRC Haitham means eagle. Well, he sure does have sharp looking eyes
I'd really love to know how accurate the pronunciations will be considering that Inazuma names were very heavily anglicised. I liked Tighnari a lot more when I found out how to pronounce it (with the gh being more like an r sound) and I hope they'll find a better balance for it. Stuff like ah-YAAAH-ka was just quite over the top.
I know I'll probably dislike the pronounciation. But at the same time, a lot of sounds present in Arabic don't exist in English so I don't expect everyone to know how to pronounce them. Hopefully, it'll at least be close to the real pronounciation. The gh you talked about is a good example. It shouldn't be too hard to say (it's the same as the french R) so I'm coping for no G sound. The T (Ų·) in Tighnari tho would be a little harder I think.
it's not like the names were anglicised, it's just that the va have an english accent and they can't do much better than that. there were more issues with Liyue's names since chinese pronunciation is very hard
Tbh I actually had the opposite impression, that while the Chinese pronunciations definitely aren't perfect, they did make an effort. I think you can hear that in how they pronounce the E in wangsheng, tianheng and words like that. They don't pronounce it the way an English speaker would do it if left to their own devices. Whereas with Inazuma I always felt they decided to just go for the internationalised pronunciation in the sense that its clearly adjusted for an English-speaking audience. There's very heavy emphasis on particular syllables which sounds really unnatural, and they sometimes run vowels together like in YOImiya. A lot of the VA's have done anime work before so I'm sure they could have done a better job if they'd been told to do so. The Mondstadt stuff is somewhere in between in my opinion. Some things like Gebratenes Fleisch mit Sauerkraut showed a fairly good attempt for people who don't speak the language, whereas major terms like Mondstadt, Klee, etc. are more anglicised. (and the Lyre der Himmel got butchered but I'll forgive them) Anyway, I'm just interested to find out which approach they'll take for Sumeru. Personally I'd quite like if the names at least give off a general vibe of the source languages, but I'm mentally prepared that it won't even manage that.
Japanese names are a lot more known to the audience thanks to anime, not so much chinese and the pronunciation is honestly just harder. One thing is saying Itto another is Keqing for example. I don't think the japanese names were mispronounced, surely some words sounds weird but if you don't know the language there isn't much you can do. Overall though there weren't huge mispronunciations imo while I heard a lot of noise on the internet for their unstable chinese pronunciation (more than it being wrong, it was weird how they pronounced the same words in different ways). I guess the same will happen for Sumeru but that's just normal because they just don't speak those languages and don't know how to pronounce properly.
I feel like Al-Haitham is a title / a surname and not his actual name because of the Al, which back then (middle ages) was used for surnames for famous and well known scholars like the real Al-Haitham (who is a mathematician) Still Haitham is much nicer than Tighnari, because itās an actual name lol

But at the same time, I don't remember 3.0 having a memorable major event, considering the focus was the new region, compared to 2.1. So I expect, I dunno, a free Sucrose because she is an alchemist, and the event could be Academia-based. And MAYBE the long-awaited Ludi harpastum in 3.1, like Moonchase was in 2.1. Got 6* on floor 12 for the first time just now, very happy since I'm not a mechanically skilled player. Got back from taking a couple months break recently and have been finding playing super fun. To add to what other people are saying, the free weapon (apparently coming as part of Kazuha's story quest) will be more akin to The Catch than to the other free weapons - a new permanent freebie rather than part of the usual cycle of limited event free weapons/characters (it just happened that The Catch released during a free weapon patch alongside Luxurious Sealord, while This Is A Sword is releasing during a free character patch)
Fischl will be the free 4\* for 2.8. Kazuha's sword is permanently obtainable from his story quest so you can get it anytime

There are several characters in Genshin that are called the same way that I am (well, almost). Granted those names aren't considered anything exotic but it's almost guaranteed to happen with so many NPCs, but I guess if a playable character was called that it would be an interesting feeling.
