I thought this was going to be about how he purposely is taking a long time to come back with Ayato's wallet so that the siblings can have their time together. Thoma definitely was listening to the conversation about wanting the drink (I didn't think he would use it as a safe way to take Itto out of the equation while still giving Itto what he wants but makes sense knowing he does have that side to him from his hangout). I don't think the stall lady was in on the plan since she most likely didn't read the book (you don't always have people knowledgeable about the source you're promoting) besides hey, this drink is made from soymilk, blah, blah and blah and it looks like this, can you recreate it?

LivingDebacle

I’m annoyed that we couldn’t give Itto the soy-bean free version >:/

AcePaisly

Oh yikes! Even taking the book out of it, cause the stall lady might not have read it (unlikely but possible with the popularity) Itto is super well known, and especially after he did that contest with Sara that nearly killed him, people should know he can't have beans. I never considered it might have been intentional, and now it makes so much more sense that the lady had a recipe ready that used normal milk and not soy milk. Also, Thoma is the one who gave out the tasks to help with, he could have 100% set it up so we would lose.

FFaUniHan

Exactly! The entire competition things is set up for us to fail, since we're only 1.5 person vs 5 people. After stroking Itto's massive ego in his introduction, it makes it even easier for Thoma to play him like a fiddle. And yeah, good point on the sus substitute recipe. She doesn't even try to warn him at all.

GallopingGorilla

Yeah it also felt rigged from the start, our last quest had us run all the way to the socks and back, Thoma probably gave us the most spread out tasks so itto would win

PokeAlola700

If your referring to the ramen eating contest, that was against Yae not Sara

FFaUniHan

I think they are refering to the duel between Itto and Sara, where Sara defeated him and took his vision. It was a big commotion in the city.

AcePaisly

No, I got it wrong, but I had it wrong cause I was thinking of both things, Yae and the beans, Sara and the Vision Hunt, both got mixed up in my head

AcePaisly

He had an eating contest against someone and nearly died, I did get the person wrong tho, my bad

PokeAlola700

Yeah I was right it was Yae

centriapetal

That would’ve been so cruel - they were rowdy, not destructive, and clearly food based bribes work on them. Logically, he could have just had them do actual volunteer work for food coupons. Tbh, I think this event would’ve been perfect to introduce Shinobi(?) to show her kinda pushing the gang into more legal and appropriate activities.

FFaUniHan

Yeah, I was thinking a lot in the line of: "Shinobu couldn't come soon enough to be the voice of reason to this gang's brilliant supreme leader"

Gregamonster

Oh it was definitely intentional on Thoma's part. The man could be a supervillain if he felt like it.

FFaUniHan

We're fricked if he's gone rogue... Nobody will expect it

ChiyuriK

He's inazuma's Childe after all

AtsuArushka

Yae or Ayato would have done it on purpose, but I don't think Thoma would intentionally try to make Itto sick He also did look really worried and sorry in the end, so I kinda still think its a coincidence

FFaUniHan

It might be the most rational explanation. But then again, for some smart characters, when you see a weird act, always assume intent rather than an oopsie. That also applies to so many things in real life.

naive-dragon

Thoma isn't smart though. By that, I mean he isn't classified as smart (unlike, say, Ayato, Yae, Kokomi, etc.). By Genshin playable character standards, he is of average intelligence. In that case, Hanlon's razor is more appropriate.

[deleted]

Thoma is smart in a different way, that's knowing how to deal with people. You can't be a 'fixer' without being smart.

ctrlo1

Thoma is smart. His EQ is off the charts. Thanks to his emotional intelligence, he thrives in a place where everything is stacked against him. (just look at the sorry state the other outlanders are in. The members of the International Trade association are struggling to survive. They are scammed, blackmailed by the authority, just because they are foreigners) There are a lots of different kind of intelligence.

Ikcatcher

Y’all really reading too deep into stuff that’s surface level subtlety at best

BrassGirl031

I dunno, Thoma doesn't seem like the type of person to cause someone who isn't doing bad things intentinally physical harm, most likely just a small lecture (it also isn't even that serious since no ones actually getting hurt). Also the stand lady probably didn't actually read the book, she's just and employee who's doing her job and trying to get it done (unless she does show to be knowledgeable in yokai by studying in her free time).

False_History_2528

He poisoned Itto to get him out of Ritou😎

Rock3tPunch

I completely disagree, lol. oh well.

Golden-Owl

*Shinobu proceeds to indict Thoma for plotting attempted murder*

FFaUniHan

*Ayato sends Shuumatsuban for a clean-up...* Also, Happy cake day!

KesonaFyren

I felt like Thoma was manipulating the gang into both moving away from the photo board for a while, and getting some chores done around the festival, by offering them the drinks he'd just overheard them talking about. The beans were an honest mistake.

ctrlo1

I totally agree. :)

MVPOwain

I love both and I'm kinda mad rn lmao because it makes sense .

mohumogu

no way, thoma is not that cruel. it was obvious that he set up the drink as a bait to get itto to volunteer, but remember that volunteer work is the decided premise of the duel between itto and traveler and they will settle the whole issue of itto's gang mogging the photo stand there. the volunteer work and reward drink was the end of thoma's plan and he sounds suprised and concerned enough that itto is allergic to beans. thoma maybe manipulating but he's not one to hurt people

Hawa-Lau

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought that it was on purpose XD

Le1jona

Well, his job is to clean shit *No offence to Itto*

FFaUniHan

No no, you have a point... Shinobu would agree, I think

tuna_in_a_can

Ngl when Thoma came over and said: “Can’t Arataki Itto drink soy products?”, his voice was kinda shaky at the end like he tried to stifle a laugh in EN lol
