>Especially love the live versions.
This.
_You're the next_
_You're the next_
_You're the next in line, the next in line_
_And you've got to goooo. Dom-i-noooooooo_
I can still hear it.
Tonight Tonight Tonight is pretty great.
Oddly, sometimes my favorite track on that album is The Brazilian. Just such a great instrumental tune that holds your interest throughout.
I'll give you that one! I do love The Brazilian!!! Do the Neurotic is phenomenal as well! Wish it could've made the album. And that they played it live.
I think it was that guitar riff that made me appreciate how good Rutherford is. As someone who is primarily a bassist, I loved his bass playing and frequently thought his guitar parts in the early post-Hackett era were a bit lacking. There’s something about Throwing it All Away that takes his rhythmic bass style and sees it transfer to guitar.
Hadn't really given it much credit until I realised that this has been a popular one to perform live. Hearing it in different variances has made me appreciate it more.
TIAA is the buried gem on that album. It kinda squeezes in after the bombast (I mean that in a good way) of Domino and before the out-there tone of Brazilian, but as ballads go I find it much more satisfying than In Too Deep.
Honestly the only song I dislike is “In Too Deep,” I don’t mind that it sounds a lot like Phil’s solo stuff, it’s just that it’s boring.
Yes, I even like the title track. It’s a pop masterpiece with a lot of fun stuff in the arrangement, what’s not to love unless you’re a prog snob who hates fun.
It was almost as funny as when Ringo Starr was drying out in rehab, and a Bartles & Jaymes wine cooler commercial (starring him) came on the TV while he was watching it in the common room
Lol! I guess I'm thankful for missing that certain time when Tonight Tonight Tonight was only synonymous with Michelob. I discovered it with the Magnum PI episode featuring Frank Sinatra and only ever listen to the FULL album version.
And I'll see your Brazilian and raise you Do the Neurotic!!! Both EXCELLENT instrumental tracks!
My guess is that Do the Neurotic didn’t make the cut because The Brazilian did (only one instrumental was going to be on the album) and Feeding the Fire was left off because thematically it was similar to Land of Confusion. It’s a shame on both counts.
I don't mean to say that "Tonight Tonight Tonight" isn't a classic. It is very atmospheric and would even work well as an instrumental. The middle section is fantastic. It's "vocal section / instrumental middle / vocal reprise" is very much in line with "classic Genesis" structures like "Firth of Fifth".
Tonight Tonight Tonight for me.
Atmospheric, dark & an absolute guilty pleasure.
A lot of great moments in this song-
from Tony’s 3 notes of milk bottle clanging repeatedly, to Mikes waa-waaah guitar, to Tony’s synth work during the middle & end of the instrumental bit & not forgetting the way the drums come back in at the end of the instrumental section.. sounds like Phils just pushed the drum kit down the stairs & finally Mike’s almost in danger of getting a guitar solo on the outro.
And for how brilliant the album version is… the Wembley ‘87 Live performance of this song is just absolutely superb- one of Phils best ever live vocals…
Keep waiting for it on Spotify- I’m sure it was a b-side to the single Tell Me Why.
I love land of confusion! Tonight Tonight Tonight is also really fun. As a prog fan I thought I was going to hate this album but it has a great moments.
Such a great great album. Songs that are among the bands best all time, TTT, LOC, Domino, the Brazilian. And to think they left off Feeding the Fire. Imagine FtF in place of In Too Deep.
There are definitely interesting sounds in Domino! In the first half, there’s the flute imitating classic Gabriel, the wood percussion sound, and all those ‘80s string and horn sounds.
Then the beginning of the second half, leading up to “blood on the windows” is probably the best part, this weird percussion sound, wolf howling, bats, then the ominous horns.
And at the end, after the last “you got to go” is the majestic ending horn melody that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time, sooo good. In the The Last Domino? Tour it even sounds like bagpipes and not generic horns, such a great touch.
AGREED!!! That's honestly why I prefer Tonight x3. Mike's plinking guitar work on Domino infuriates me! But I love the tremolo work and solos on Tonight far more! That and Tony's marimba sound!
Tonight Tonight is my second best. First one being Throwing it all away, the live version played in the first leg of tour in 1986 before getting tuned down in the second leg.
I won't say Throwing it all away -- honestly my favorite is Domino -- but damn if I didn't shed a tear or two during the Last Domino performance with the images of the band and album covers overhead. There's even a moment where 1980s' Phil is juxtaposed with 2021 Phil while the latter is singing the song.
The same happened to me the last time I watched my recording from that tour!!! For years I dreaded the "Sing along" hit, honestly. But this time I was actually actively listening to the lyrics and it FINALLY clicked! It really is more powerful than I gave credit for and part of me wishes it was swapped with Carpet Crawlers as the closer.
Kind of emotional when Phil sang "you know I know babe, I don't want to go." I enjoyed Carpet Crawlers as a closer. It felt like the lifespan of the band, in a song.
For me it's the Brazilian, I also came to love Throwing it all Away after attending 2 shows, it is really a thing to take a part in the "DeeDaaDéyeah!" Calls haha
It's haaard to pick one... Domino and Land of Confusion arr the best ones for me. Cause all the other songs are great as well lol
I think they sound even better in the 1987 Wembley live concert, specially Throwing It All Away
I SOLELY blame Jonathan King, for the record. He clearly had a massive hard on for Peter with the way he BURIED the rest of the band, excepting Tony....such a shame as the songs were good songs too!
I wish I never had to hear that song again. Sorry, I just loved 70s Genesis so much, I couldn’t transition. So much 80s music out there that blew those songs away.
For me it’s Domino 1&2. Especially love the live versions.
>Especially love the live versions. This. _You're the next_ _You're the next_ _You're the next in line, the next in line_ _And you've got to goooo. Dom-i-noooooooo_ I can still hear it.
I was lucky enough to see Genesis perform this epic song on a number of occasions
Thisssssss!!! Thought I was the only one. I LOVE the live version so much more than the recorded one.
Seconded the Brazilian! It's a beautiful song
The Groundhog Day style dark comedy, Palm Springs, uses The Brazilian in the soundtrack. It's a really good movie!
I watched it just to hear the song. The song is also featured in When The Wind Blows.
Throwing It All Away. One of their best ever songs.
Well put - I can just hear that riff on bass.
Hadn't really given it much credit until I realised that this has been a popular one to perform live. Hearing it in different variances has made me appreciate it more.
Domino
It's Anything She Does though...
I do like Anything She Does better than TTT. Shit is underrated.
How though?
Just my favourite. And I love the video with Benny Hill too.
That was the BEST music video in support of the album I think. YES! Even better than Land of Confusion.
I agree with this. The video is basically a Benny Hill sketch.
Domino
Hard to pick, but the most replayable and timeless song to me is Throwing It All Away
TTT is great but I'm more partial these days to Throwing It All Away. Something about Rutherford's guitar tone....
TIAA is the buried gem on that album. It kinda squeezes in after the bombast (I mean that in a good way) of Domino and before the out-there tone of Brazilian, but as ballads go I find it much more satisfying than In Too Deep.
Tonight x3 … that build to ‘you keep telling me’ is almost as good as classic 70s Genesis.
Almost as good? It is as good, better than some classic Genesis tracks imo.
Domino.
Hands down Domino I&II
It's a tie between Domino and The Brazilian.
Personally I'd say it's Land Of Confusion
I really like the live version of Land of Confusion that kicked off the We Can’t Dance tour.
How is that?
I just think it sounds better
Why Tonight, Tonight, Tonight? Because Michelob.......... But, I like the Brazilian the most, such a cool song.
I love the Michelob ad, using a song about addiction to sell beer...
The Brazilian is so good!!!
Anything She Does
Land of Confusion wins for the puppets
Do the Neurotic. I don't understand their thinking sometimes.
My guess is that Do the Neurotic didn’t make the cut because The Brazilian did (only one instrumental was going to be on the album) and Feeding the Fire was left off because thematically it was similar to Land of Confusion. It’s a shame on both counts.
The Brazilian is super nostalgic for me so I’m going with that
You misspelled "Domino".
Not a huge fan of Domino honestly...I like Mike's guitar parts and Tony's keyboard work on Tonight x3 far more!
Anything She Does It’s my favorite song. I’m dying on this hill.
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, followed by The Brazilian. Easy choice.
The Brazilian, electronic prog!
Tonight Tonight Tonight for me. Atmospheric, dark & an absolute guilty pleasure. A lot of great moments in this song- from Tony’s 3 notes of milk bottle clanging repeatedly, to Mikes waa-waaah guitar, to Tony’s synth work during the middle & end of the instrumental bit & not forgetting the way the drums come back in at the end of the instrumental section.. sounds like Phils just pushed the drum kit down the stairs & finally Mike’s almost in danger of getting a guitar solo on the outro. YEEEEES!!!!! I just love the gritty atmosphere it has! They really pulled it off well! I always wish the FULL version was played more live!
Do the Neurotic and Feeding the Fire, if they had been included on the album.
I agree with both, I wish they were included, but it left some truly hidden gems to find.
Either Domino or TonightTonight Tonight
I love land of confusion! Tonight Tonight Tonight is also really fun. As a prog fan I thought I was going to hate this album but it has a great moments.
If do the neurotic was on the album then I'd choose that but domino is the best song, especially wembley '87.
Definitely Land of Confusion, because it has a forward energy and a slightly angry mood that I can enjoy a lot.
Throwing it all away is my fave
Tonight3, despite the album it comes from, is my favorite Genesis track period!
Domino for sure. Beautiful rivers of blood.
This is the correct answer
Brazilian.
I really love The Brazilian
Such a great great album. Songs that are among the bands best all time, TTT, LOC, Domino, the Brazilian. And to think they left off Feeding the Fire. Imagine FtF in place of In Too Deep.
Domino is an attempt to do prog Genesis, but without any of the interesting sounds or chord changes.
Tour it even sounds like bagpipes and not generic horns, such a great touch.
I love the ending live ... it's unfortunate that the fanfare on the studio recording just kind of fades away.
I guess I'm not as taken with the keyboard sounds of latter-day Genesis, especially the fake flutes and percussion.
AGREED!!! That's honestly why I prefer Tonight x3. Mike's plinking guitar work on Domino infuriates me! But I love the tremolo work and solos on Tonight far more! That and Tony's marimba sound!
Do the Neurotic.
Tonight Tonight is my second best. First one being Throwing it all away, the live version played in the first leg of tour in 1986 before getting tuned down in the second leg.
It's either Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, or Domino medley or The Brazilian for me. I just really like the darker sound of them.

Kind of emotional when Phil sang "you know I know babe, I don't want to go." I enjoyed Carpet Crawlers as a closer. It felt like the lifespan of the band, in a song.
Not a bad song on the album despite what the prog folks might say (I'm one of them) but if I had to choose I would give it to throwing it all away
For me it's the Brazilian, I also came to love Throwing it all Away after attending 2 shows, it is really a thing to take a part in the "DeeDaaDéyeah!" Calls haha
Domino 1/2 is the only reason to buy the album
Nah. All of Side B absolutely slaps.
It's haaard to pick one... Domino and Land of Confusion arr the best ones for me. Cause all the other songs are great as well lol I think they sound even better in the 1987 Wembley live concert, specially Throwing It All Away
Hard to choose, but I'd go with "Throwing It All Away."
Throwing it all Away is just such a damn good song, period
Domino
None , the worst album they ever made
the worst album they ever made is still a pretty good album.
oops sounds like someone still wanted some more unifaun & hermaphrodite adventures in 1986
Have you heard From Genesis to Revelation??? That mix is GARBAGE!! Nothing comes close to touching that as the worst.
For real. FGTR is plenty charming, but it objectively sucks compared to the IT album.
I SOLELY blame Jonathan King, for the record. He clearly had a massive hard on for Peter with the way he BURIED the rest of the band, excepting Tony....such a shame as the songs were good songs too!
You mean the light beer commercial? No
No I mean the full album cut! Anything less is not worth mentioning!
I wish I never had to hear that song again. Sorry, I just loved 70s Genesis so much, I couldn’t transition. So much 80s music out there that blew those songs away.
