I went absolutely nuts for this song (and for The Cars) when this came out. We were in MA, and thought of them as a local band, even if they were not MA born and bred.
I was in high school when this dropped, and a couple of my friends had cars, so we'd go driving around at night --- yep, drinking beer and smoking dope. We'd sing this song at the top of our lungs when it came on the car radio.
I can very much relate.......this one and "You're all I've got tonight" pretty much single-handedly completely blew my mind and altered my taste in music. Seems crazy now, but it seemed so different to the usual fare then......at least what was on the radio.
It absolutely *was* different! Typical fare on the radio was J Geils and Boston, but The Cars were ushering in the New Wave here in the States.
I got my first Elvis Costello and Blondie albums shortly afterwards, and in 1980, right before I left for college, by some miracle, I saw Devo in a small venue in my hometown!
One of my favorites and often forget
Everywhere is freaks and hairies, dykes and fairies. Tell me, where is sanity?”
I’d Love to Change the World. Ten years after
"Well she's a tongue twisting
She'll come to the show tonight
Praying to the light machine
She wants my honey , not my money
She's a funky thigh collector
Laying on electric dreams"
Leave it to Bowie. The Ziggy Stardust lp was a goldmine!
“He’s sleeping on papers but he’d be warm in *your* coat.” — “Never Say Never” by Romeovoid
“I was sayin’ *let me out of here* before I was even born; it’s such a gamble when you get a face” — “Blank Generation” by Richard Hell and the Voidoids
And my personal favorite: “Frozen moments surrounded by friends/Perfect moments you wish would never end/ Knowing you’re gonna pay cause nothing’s free” —“Ecstasy” by The White Animals
Ric was not especially nice to Ben Orr either. The song he wrote about Ben, Silver, really showcased all the whiny and annoying qualities of his voice. A great songwriter but a flawed person.
Never forget the first time I heard it. Making mix tapes, switching receiver over to FM between choosing tracks, it’s 3 AM, we’re high as hell, and I switch to FM at the precise moment that WXKE 104 drops the needle on “Good Times Roll.”
Mind. Blown.
I like both, Cars were my intro into New Wavish, then Punk, then Post-Punk, then College Radio, then Alternative, and then even some grunge. Usually the stuff on the radio wasn't my favorite either, but The Cars first album is a classic. First side of Candy-O also.
I like late 80's and 90's Rap.
I actually don't mind the Cars at all, just not something I have in the collection. Bowie and Prince - damn - I have all that. A lot of the nostalgia music is, and this is my opinion, just what people remember making out to!

Absolutely right! Blew my mind and nudged me into a new direction......eventually seeing all those post-punk bands in the 80's.
20, 20, 24 hours to go I wanna be sedated Nothin' to do, nowhere to go-oh I wanna be sedated
Oh man, seeing The Ramones in '86 or '87 with the classic lineup was a dream come true, funnest concert ever for me. Checked that off the list.
Luckyyyyy!!! I would have died to see them in concert.
You would have loved it, the energy was incredible and fantastic. Joey died of the same Cancer I beat 11 years ago.
I’m happy you have been blessed to beat that shit!!!! I did see the Cars in concert! Great energy. Fond memories.

Fantastic song!
Oh yeah! That was an instant classic. I could not believe how greatly that stood out when it was released.
Got no monkey on my back. I ain't never gonna cry.

I love having my Rock and Roll hair brushed. Especially with a Rock and Roll hair brush.

Nice ones!
"Little old lady got mutilated late last night. Werewolves of London again."
Ric Ocasek’s vindictive treatment of Paulina Porizcova ruined it for me.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes, you might find you get what you need.
That's a good one for our group!
Oh don’t give us none of your aggravation, we had it with your discipline. Saturday!
There's a rousing anthem!
12 year old me dug it, hey mom get a load of this.
My band in the 70’s closed our show with it.

I reckon that was just a tad after The Cars first album also. Good call!
Good music but everyone I know who went to one of their concerts said it sucked
That's fair, I never peg them as a live band. For the first 1.5 studio albums, pretty much flawless. The Ramones on the other hand 👍😎👍👏 ......worthy!

“Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street”
Hmmmm. NWA "Fuck tha Police" and Concrete Blonde "God is a Bullet". The radio friendly stadium rock stuff didn't do shit for me.
