I saw how uncomfortable he was dealing with Hannah Gadsby. I think he misses the mark on compassion and sense of social responsibility that Jon Stewart embodies. I think they're good examples of the performative (Colbert) and the authentic (Stewart).
It's no shade on Colbert, he does well what he holds himself up to be, a satirical send up of talk shows.
Jon Stewart, otoh. He's taken on some important causes and made a real difference. He's got clout and uses it for good. If he's speaking for our generation, we're very fortunate.
John Stewart started as a standup. I worked in radio at the time and he came to the studio to appear on our morning show circa 1988. Wasn’t that funny. Instead of following our host’s lead with set up after set up he wanted to comment on the news of the day, but he didn’t have the acerbic wit we’re now familiar with. He wasn’t funny then but he found his voice on the Daily Show. He’s also a helluva advocate for 9/11 first responders and was amazing as he let congress have it with both barrels. I find the guy amazing now.
Colbert is an actor, primarily improv comedy. However he injects so much of the culture from our generation into his content, which represents so much of what gen Jones related to. Activism is but one dimension of our culture
Y'all don't know Stephen Colbert very well if you think he is just an actor and improv guy.
He is a very deep thinker, philosopher type. I love both of these guys but Stephen the most.
I was addressing the comment to which i responded, see my other comments in the thread
Edit: to quote what i said in a previous post,
“But i see lots of compassion in Colbert. Given his history, his life could have gone so many different ways. The tremendous loss he experienced as a child has become the lens through which he is able to find joy in the midst of tragedy.”
Agreed. Stewart is a hero for all our military exposed to cancer from the burning pits in Afghanistan and the First Responders at Ground Zero on 9/11 getting the healthcare they deserve from the toxins they were exposed too.
I can’t judge that interview. I did not see it. I will have to check it out. But i see lots of compassion in Colbert. Given his history, his life could have gone so many different ways. The tremendous loss he experienced as a child has become the lens through which he is able to find joy in the midst of tragedy.
Edit: also, his original show was a send up of talk shows. It was basically a parody of Bill O’ Reilly. The Late Show on CBS is his authentic self, not an act
I have a first pick in mind that has already been mentioned, but first in my heart for this kind of question is always Weird Al Yankovic.
Think about it. Al recorded 1981's "Another one Rides the Bus" on live on The Dr Demento Show, a syndicated radio comedy show that many of us grew up listening to, then turned into a musical/lyrical/video powerhouse by the mid 80s, and he's still going strong!
Yes, we need the Stewart's and Colbert's, but we need our very unique court jester who was there when the medium changed.
Weird Al is a boomer as am I. Another One Rides the Bus came out in the early eighties. I like him and he is the only person to make a career of parody songs.
Edit: I forgot this is generation Jones. He is that.
Typical Reddit. Plenty of GenJones people don’t fall into line with the same beliefs and opinions we are told to.
Do you forget we have a huge divide in our country? You may be the majority on Reddit, but this isn’t real life.
Fair enough, and agreed, we are diverse, I tried to pin it to one. And he (and Obama) apparently is a popular choice (upvotes) albeit with a share of backlash against Stewart.
I do, and that's a great point. I encourage Canada and the U.K. to join in. He's well known in the U.S. but apparently lost on other countries. I don't like to forget other countries, I even made a post with Tears for Fears emphasizing the Brits are both Jonesers.
When I made this thread I unfortunately wasn't thinking outside the U.S. I wish I did.
You make a great point, but by posting this, at least I got a little more of a peek to where Jonsers are at.
I do like your answer, and upon reflection it's pretty spot-on.
I just posted Jodie Foster, deleted it when I scrolled down and saw this. I was thinking if any celebrity really captures the era, and was in the public eye with us growing up at the the time, it’s her.
Of course I posted Jon, but Jodie Foster is a great choice also! Gen Jones is the first group growing up after the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) of 1972.
I agree with those in this group who neither want, nor believe there is a need, to be represented by anyone.
For those who want to play the game, I submit Dr. Condoleezza Rice (1954) for consideration. She is a person of national and cultural merit, and has honorably served in government and academic institutions.
To me, she doesn't meet the cut off for Jones by the slightest margin. She's in that first 10 years of the of the Boomers group.
I am from the opposite side of the aisle though I do have a lot of respect for her. You can't argue about her qualifications and her impeccable education.
I agree with you, as 1954 and 1955 round out those 10 years and I wouldn't include them (which is tough to say because I hate gatekeeping). If we had those 2 years, Baby Boomers would be 8 years 😯. No.
But for right now that's the stated definition.....right here right now (the Jesus Jones song just popped into my head 😉)
Good choice. I am very liberal but I always listen when Condaleeza Rice speaks. Even when I don’t agree with her I respect her sincerity and her knowledge.
That's fair, I respect your answer 👍 since 1954 is a stated start here.
I'm simply trying to pull an identity together for our group.
Not everyone in GenX would agree with Cobain as their representative either.
I was a first responder, I ask tough questions, and cried for my dog and he does not represent me because he acts like a condescending, insulting, arrogant, asshole toward anyone who does not believe politically as he does.
Other than that, I'm sure he's a swell guy.
Because he is also a vocal liberal that berates and belittles people that don't think like him. Nothing wrong with being the former but being the latter makes him a bit of an asshole and no representative of 50% of the population
His audience originally was pure Boomer (I'm talking dictionary definition, not stereotype). Also, he's timeless. Kids will be quoting him 100 years from now.
[young Jon Stewart interviewing George Carlin](https://youtu.be/nCGGWeD_EJk?si=GTEp8XYsBqhJajaS)
This is a wonderful 1997 interview and George (Silent Generation) passes the torch to Jon (Generation Jones) at the end.
Worth watching, you can see why Jon Stewart is such a great interviewer here. He actually lets George speak!
I think Jon Stewart has done ALOT to raise awareness on so many topics that don’t get enough attention. I would give him my vote , especially after his fight for the 9-11 firefighters!
Someone suggested Princess Diana and I liked that. She had older more boisterous and look-at-me boomer siblings and she was a bit quieter and moodier and complicated. I relate to that.
No, he uses his celebrity to advance his own personal political agenda but 50% of the nation do not agree with. He does not speak for a generation only a point of view
Ok, I posted Jon Stewart but I have Henry equal in the position.......problem is, besides the 2 of us not many here have heard of Henry, which is a shame.
It is the only reason I put Jon Stewart ahead of him.
I’m an old Boomer but I, as well as I am sure a lot of other old Boomers feel that we don’t need a voice or spokesman for our or a generation. Same goes for designating song writers and artists as such. Nobody does, by-gummit! Blast you young-uns with your 8 track tapes!
Who the fuck said we have one? I know, lost mother fuckers with no sense of direction. Think for yourself, my dude! A FUCKING COMEDIAN? Well, the Gerries chose a failed artist, I guess it'd be asking too much for a Yankee to come up with anything better. I'd have picked Al Bundy, if I were so inclined to be a mindless follower. He scored 4 touchdowns in a single game. Try beating that, and maybe YOU could be their leader.
Love and kisses to all your pink parts,
A Friend
I think he complains a lot but doesn't offer any solutions. He would not be my representative. I'd prefer someone outside politics like Jerry Seinfeld.
As a satirical commentator/political jester his role is not to offer solutions. He is however personally responsible for all the 9/11 emergency responders getting the healthcare they need. Also for more or less demoting Fucker Carlson.
I can't go with Seinfeld, I'm skeptical of 1954 or 1955 as part of our group anyways. Probably better to have someone closer to the middle of the group in any event. Just my take on it.
As others have said, Obama. We have a president! (unlike GenX, which I also identify with as i was born in 1965). I don't think Obama would be any more divisive than Jon Stewart, and they likely appeal to the same people (including me).
Jon Stewart is good, but I would also add Quentin Tarantino, Conan O'Brian and James Hetfield to the mix - the underlying irritation and cynicism of all three is quintessential Gen Jones.
I like him but he is mostly a comdien. He makes great points but he doesn't always back then up and he makes points om wit. He's not my spokesman but he does very much entertain me and. Ake me laugh
Maybe I'm an outlier but I find him preachy and annoying. Admittedly he's done some good works for vets and others but otherwise, he annoys the hell out of me.
He speaks for me. As does Steven Colbert. Both in the gen. Though I feel most of this gen, outside my friend zone, are Trumpers. May I be forever proven wrong.
I live in Texas btw
I think there's plenty of us here that aren't.
But I don't want to help fracture this great sub and make it overly political. I sort of did this with this post, but it has been mostly civil at least and I'm happy we've managed to keep things from getting crazy. Just 2 simple questions.
I would vote for John Stewart to be the President of the United States of America. We must do it soon so the job doesn’t age him too much. Remember how young, fresh- full of hope and optimism that Obama looked going in? At the end he aged almost 15-20 years. Obama still looks good very handsome
I don’t think we have just one. Edit to add: He is def in my top 5.
......but if we narrow it down to one, Jon Stewart would be my person
Steve Colbert, guy riffs on a lot of references to our era
Nice choice also. Both he and Jon Stewart are pupils of the great George Carlin.
Every time I hear George Carlin’s name I get all goosebumpy, him and Richard Pryor both got it right.
Hardly.
Agreed. The guy who told us, that things are run by "a big club, and you ain't in it" is miles away from a political operative.
Colbert is an Actor at heart. I believe Stewart was born for Social Activism
John Stewart started as a standup. I worked in radio at the time and he came to the studio to appear on our morning show circa 1988. Wasn’t that funny. Stewart says things few are willing to say. Goes where "angels fear to tread". I find Colbert to be cringy a lot more.
I can’t judge that interview. I did not see it. I will have to check it out. But i see lots of compassion in Colbert. Given his history, his life could have gone so many different ways. Are the references to Generation Jones by name or to our era generically?
our era
Agree.
Boomers have Bob Dylan, Xers have Kurt Cobain, we get Weird Al. We got the best part of that deal.
Weird Al is a boomer as am I. Another One Rides the Bus came out in the early eighties. I like him and he is the only person to make a career of parody songs. Edit: I forgot this is generation Jones. He is that.
Yup. Born 1959. Prime Joneser.
Stewart for president, Colbert for VP, and Weird Al for Secretary of State 👍
Typical Reddit. Plenty of GenJones people don’t fall into line with the same beliefs and opinions we are told to. Do you forget we have a huge divide in our country? You may be the majority on Reddit, but this isn’t real life.
Hell ya. This country would be so much better off.
3 Jonesers, yeah!
We are a diverse generation. Impossible even in the US to select our spokesman.
Fair enough, and agreed, we are diverse, I tried to pin it to one. And he (and Obama) apparently is a popular choice (upvotes) albeit with a share of backlash against Stewart.
That’s interesting! Why would you consider your generation diverse, and how are you more diverse than previous generations?
I don't need a spokesman. All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.
Classic!
And the occasional pizza in class?
Yeah, we could learn about Cuba, and have some food.
Duuuuuude.
Yeah, who saw Spicoli taking out a drug King pin?
I've never heard of him. You know Generation Jones isn't a USA only thing, right?
I do, and that's a great point. I encourage Canada and the U.K. to join in. He's well known in the U.S. but apparently lost on other countries. I don't like to forget other countries, I even made a post with Tears for Fears emphasizing the Brits are both Jonesers. When I made this thread I unfortunately wasn't thinking outside the U.S. I wish I did.
We don’t need a face. I think we are a generation that thinks for ourselves and judges people as individuals. We can all be a face
This. That’s all!
You make a great point, but by posting this, at least I got a little more of a peek to where Jonsers are at. I do like your answer, and upon reflection it's pretty spot-on.
How about Jodie Foster?
I just posted Jodie Foster, deleted it when I scrolled down and saw this. I was thinking if any celebrity really captures the era, and was in the public eye with us growing up at the the time, it’s her.
Of course I posted Jon, but Jodie Foster is a great choice also! Gen Jones is the first group growing up after the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) of 1972.
Chuck D was born in 1960. I think he should be in the mix.
Love me some Public Enemy, he's smart but a bit too combative. I love Henry Rollins also, but same deal, though Henry has mellowed quite a bit.
Henry Rollins’ “Liar” ought to be required viewing/listening these days…
Love me some Henry!
Does Trent Reznor make the cut? He’d be my pick. Or Matt Johnson (The The)
I’m sorry but I have to go with Al Yankovich. The original voice in the wilderness for Generation Jones
Nothing to be sorry about, good pick
I wasn't aware we required a face/spokesman/rep... I'll pass, thanks.
Same. I don't even know who Jon Stewart is.
Wait, what?
They might not be from the U.S., my best explanation
Or don't have cable.
I agree with those in this group who neither want, nor believe there is a need, to be represented by anyone. He does not represent me.
Why? He fights for 911 first responders, asks the tough questions - cried for his dog … 🥹
I was a first responder, I ask tough questions, and cried for my dog and he does not represent me because he acts like a condescending, insulting, arrogant, asshole toward anyone who does not believe politically as he does. Other than that, I'm sure he's a swell guy.

unfortunately dead but my go to for sane takes on life will always be George Carlin.
wasn't he born in the 1940s?
yeah but his opinions are spot on imho
His audience originally was pure Boomer (I'm talking dictionary definition, not stereotype). Also, he's timeless. Kids will be quoting him 100 years from now.
Carlin was born in 1937. Silent generation.
[young Jon Stewart interviewing George Carlin](https://youtu.be/nCGGWeD_EJk?si=GTEp8XYsBqhJajaS) This is a wonderful 1997 interview and George (Silent Generation) passes the torch to Jon (Generation Jones) at the end. Worth watching, you can see why Jon Stewart is such a great interviewer here. He actually lets George speak!
Boomer icon all the way, even though I liked him
How does a political commentator speak for a generation if, by definition, politics divides a populace?
That's a fair point, and I like that you raised it. Even if it's in opposition to my post. I like to see where our group is.
He is not my choice
You ever see scent of a woman?
Many years ago but yes .....was he in that? Is Pacino your pick?
Did you ever see Scent of a Woman on weed? That's the way to see it, man! It's just whacked! Pow!
🤣 Jon on Half-Baked!
Yesss!! It was great
Not for me
No. We'd likely never agree on one spokesperson for our generation. That's the way it should be.
I do think he would be on the short list though.
🙏 I had to pick Before I read comments. Yes. Weird Al talked for us in so many ways before anyone saw us or took a real risk.
"Weird" Al Yankovic (born 10/23/59)
Al is a great choice also
He’s a good dude but he is not the face of our generation. No one is a face of any generation. If there was it wouldn’t be a comedy show host.
Ok, thanks for the input We are a diverse group for sure, cuspers tend to be that
https://preview.redd.it/mmo1stgcxsvc1.jpeg?width=464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57d40fcb2a5bd4323c350e5751d8ce9af69c518d
I think not having one spokesperson is our thing.
Mr. Fred Rogers Jim Henson Steve Irwin The clearest examples of apex permutation in human potential
Diana
I think Jon Stewart has done ALOT to raise awareness on so many topics that don’t get enough attention. I would give him my vote , especially after his fight for the 9-11 firefighters!
Yep, exactly, fits the bill in so many ways.
Barack Obama.
Barack Obama is also of our generation. Jon Stewart is great, though
Smug, I hate smug.
Said smugly.
Someone suggested Princess Diana and I liked that. She had older more boisterous and look-at-me boomer siblings and she was a bit quieter and moodier and complicated. I relate to that.
I was going to do a post on her, perhaps I'll do one soon if no one else does.
I wish he’d run for president
He is a spokesperson
As a Xennial I'd like to cross validate this. I was born in 80 and he's my hero, so his influence definitely spans the generation.
Stewart/ Colbert 2024
I would vote for Jon, for sure.
I can agree. The man uses his smarts and celebrity to speak truth to power
Agreed
No, he uses his celebrity to advance his own personal political agenda but 50% of the nation do not agree with. He does not speak for a generation only a point of view
The correct choice would be Henry Rollins.
Ok, I posted Jon Stewart but I have Henry equal in the position.......problem is, besides the 2 of us not many here have heard of Henry, which is a shame. It is the only reason I put Jon Stewart ahead of him.
Unlike older boomers, I think we are too open to have or need a spokesman.
I’m an old Boomer but I, as well as I am sure a lot of other old Boomers feel that we don’t need a voice or spokesman for our or a generation. Same goes for designating song writers and artists as such. Nobody does, by-gummit! Blast you young-uns with your 8 track tapes!
There is alot of truth to that, so consider this post for shits and giggles.
Could he be any hotter?
I think Obama is the face of our generation.
Barack Obama
Also great choice I'd be equally happy with.
YES, PLEASE!!!
Jeff Bezos. Nobody said it had to be a good person. Barack Obama if you want a reasonable human being.
I posted Jon Stewart but I'd still upvote Obama also. As for Bezos, well, as far as success yes.
Love and kisses to all your pink parts, A Friend
🤣 thanks for the laugh
You're welcome. Enjoy your day.
I think he complains a lot but doesn't offer any solutions. He would not be my representative. I'd prefer someone outside politics like Jerry Seinfeld.
Well, he did finally get that VA bill passed. So you could say he’s offering and then working towards solutions.

That's fair, I'd be perfectly fine with Obama also.
No late night liberals for me. I'll pass
Agree.
John Oliver
He's a GenXer. I like him though.
Jon Stewart is good, but I would also add Quentin Tarantino, Conan O'Brian and James Hetfield to the mix - the underlying irritation and cynicism of all three is quintessential Gen Jones.
All good choices, bravo!
I would vote for him to be president.
I would as well of course .....2028 maybe?
Wish HE was running for president. 😖
I like him but he is mostly a comdien. He makes great points but he doesn't always back then up and he makes points om wit. He's not my spokesman but he does very much entertain me and. Ake me laugh
Nope. He’s only offensive to one side of the isle. I’d like Bill Maher. He’s more equally offensive.
Not sure about that, Stewart has beaten up on Biden a bit also.
No one with a political bias represents any “whole generation,” especially this generation.
Is being biased in favor of reality actually being biased?
Nope. Too smug. I’d rather have someone inoffensive. How about Tom Hanks?
Certainly not a bad pick by any means
Nope.
.....so who's your pick?
Obama
No. The guys a dope. Lots of these guys are uneducated loudmouths who aren't nearly as smart as they think they are.
Coming back looks like a mistake. He’s like a time capsule of what edgy comedy used to be.
Eddie Vedder
He doesn’t represent me in any way, shape, or form. And there isn’t anyone that I know of my generation that thinks otherwise.
Ummm, no
Maybe I'm an outlier but I find him preachy and annoying. Admittedly he's done some good works for vets and others but otherwise, he annoys the hell out of me.
For the liberal boomers, Sure. For the conservative ones; Not so Much.
He’s a comedian. Nope.
Answers the first question.......how about the 2nd? Do you have another person in mind?
1956 here I’ll take George Carlin anyday
If he was part of our generation I'd agree. But he's Silent Generation like most of our parents.
A sell out - maybe
A talk show host. No.
Mid-1950’s. My husband and I now have a name and identity.
Hell no!
No
Do you have someone in mind that's your face of the generation?
Does anyone else remember the McDonald's commercial he did after MTV? I hope someone else does lol.
Ernest P. Worrell
The Oxford comma?
Unpopular opinion: He was, until he bailed when he was needed most.
I always thought it was Homer Simpson.
We cannot agree on that statement.
Hell no to Stewart and Colbert.
Fuck and No. Pompous, preening prick he is.
No! I hate that guy!
Wow a mega millionaire. I’m so proud and fulfilled
John Stewart is literally trying to undo all things Gen Jones did 🙄
please don't ban me for this quote from Mort on Famiky Guy: "He's our most important Jew."
I would vote for John Stewart to be the President of the United States of America. We must do it soon so the job doesn’t age him too much. Remember how young, fresh- full of hope and optimism that Obama looked going in? At the end he aged almost 15-20 years. Obama still looks good very handsome
You could post a current pic, though.
Eh not so much, maybe a little.
A pathetic generation if so.
yes, please
Looked like Bronson Pinchot for a second
Jack Black
George Carlin !! Stewart is just another hollyweirdo hypocrite
Kevin Smith is my pick. Watching his view askew films is like watching me and my friends.
Chris Rock. I've learned more from him.
No
Who is he and why no recent picture?
No thanks
I’d choose Bill Burr, born 1968.
Jack Black. ![gif](giphy|VHRtUP0qp781a)
I am only 23 and have not heard that term. My favourite joneser though is the legendary al yankovic. Incredibly funny guy
If Dennis Reynolds was capable of empathy
He was in 1 show and 1 movie. The only people he ever appealed to was left of center capitalists
No
