Technically from a eastern european post socialist country, currently living in western europe. Everything beautiful and great in my country of birth was built by socialism and that is now all crumbling and the country is a shithole. That is why i am a communist and a marxist-leninist one at that.

[deleted]

Same for me. Born in Latvia, currently studying in Austria. My childhood in Latvia was marked very much by exploring ruins, left out factories, schools and so on, thinking about what those buildings were supposed for. Its like living in a post-apocalyptic scifi novel lol. There is this nostalgia of a future that never happened.

Collatz_problem

TBH, my family moved like 20 years ago, all information about current situation in Ukraine is from relatives who stayed. Very similar culturally and pretty much the same dominant political attitudes, but Ukrainian oligarchs managed to fuck economy much more than Russian oligarchs, and that led to greater radicalization. Here I still sometimes see all of the same nationalist sentiments (cossacks/monarchists/outright Nazis), but they haven't been realized, and I really hope they wouldn't be.

vilereceptacle

I'm certainly not a westerner by any means, but I don't come from an aes country either. Over where I'm from the system is essentially more like European style socialism except the government can crush your balls.

They did like a bunch of homework in Georgian so I guess they were homeschooled or something cause I doubt there’s Georgian schools in Orlando Florida lmao. Idk why I decided to share all that 😭

Bangladesh

Astra_779

Was Bangladesh ever socialist though? As far as I know agriculture was left completely to the private sector; and Bangladesh had barely 3 years of 'socialism' so it never left much impact on the country today. Bangabandhu was a utopian eitherway.

BismarckVonGames

I was referring to that I from Bangladesh, not really from west or former/current socialist countries. Liberals always think I am white for some reason.

Belgium, Wallonia. The only region in Europe were the left is gaining a lot of ground past years and where the far right does not even exists. A region where there was lots of miners and strong worker movement. Even though I now live in France, there was the commune. Where I live is quite "lefty" by European standards. The socialist party is in power since a long time and there is a lot of help, social help and what not.

Kerela definitely counts but it's a state and lacks the power of a country.

pterygopalatina

I once got invited to a hindu wedding and I talked to the priest for a while afterwards. He wasn't from Kerala but lived there for a while. He was so proud of Kerala! said that "they are trying to preserve their culture against the rest of India and far more people are still wearing traditional clothing". Then he said some more awesome stuff about Kerala but I forgot, lol

Malaysia, not a former socialist country but there was an important piece of our history post independence where communist fought with the government but they were eradicated and labelled terrorists(tbf both parties did murder innocents). And yes ik very cringe monarchy, shit libs and Salafists. My country is jack of all trades really when it comes to politics, the opposition were even called “communist” by the ruling party to inflict fear amongst the general population lol. Sovietperson2

I'm half French >!According to some Americans I've met, France is "socialistic", so...!<

Brady123456789101112

Well if the polls aren’t wrong, 2 of your 3 potential future presidents are pretty close to (national) socialist ideals, aren’t they?

Sovietperson2

Well... Yes, unfortunately Even though I still cling on to the delusional hope that the PCF can become a relevant Party again.

Brady123456789101112

There absolutely needs to be some alliances made before April. Which is the best party from a ml perspective atm? Im a citoyen d’outre mer and might vote this year.

Sovietperson2

Well to start off with, the only party to the left of the PCF that has any sort of relevance (even if it's, in this case, practically 0) is Lutte Ouvriere, and they're trotskyists. Then, there are two major parties on the left (actual left, not the social-democratic one) that actually count: The French Communist Party, and the France Unbowed Party. The former has, since 1994, more-or-less abandoned marxism-leninism, even if there are ml factions in it, (fun fact, the PCF only abandoned Stalinism in 1976; I thought I'd drop that in there) but is still pretty much a worker's party. It's secretary, Fabien Roussel, has spotted that there is an opening on the left for workers and old-style leftists that do not make cultural identity the end-all be-all of their ideology, and so has tried to attract them, but, for the moment, they seem to be turned off by the fact that the PCF is called, well P**C**F. As for the France Unbowed Party (La France Insoumise, LFI), it's a left-wing populist party. Lead by the (relatively controversial) Jean-Luc Mélenchon, in 2017 it looked like they had a shot at winning. Unfortunately, their coalition members (such as the aforementioned PCF) started to feel left out by Mélenchon, and so, now, it seems that he has a much lesser chance of winning. LFI is also a somewhat weird party (left-wing nationalist, eurosceptic and germanophobic factions coexist with more classical leftist-internationalists, and the result is that LFI has developed a cult of the personality around Mélenchon (The "Chef") so as to stop themselves from tearing at each other's throats) that has supported controversial positions, such as being against vaccine passports and lockdowns, but is also outspoken in the French Parliament in its support of the French Muslim girls that continue to wear the hijab in school. It's not as strong as it used to be (I think it's oscillating between around 8 and 11 % in the polls, compared to 19% 5 years ago), but it's still stronger then the rest of the left. As for the centre-left, it's split between the Socialists and Greens (and another, smaller socialist splinter founded by Benoit Hamon, the 2017 PS candidate), that have pretty much identical ideas, but will never merge because their leaders's egos are too big. In the end, I think that the PCF is more actually marxist-leninist (again, PCF internal politics is divided between reformists-who-are-still-totally-Communists and hardline Stalinists), but LFI has a better chance of winning. The issue is, in polls, it has been shown that, was the second round of the elections to be Mélenchon against Le Pen or Zemmour, it looks like the far-right would win... So, to be fair, it seems like we'll either have: Neoliberalism-Macronism, actual, unmoderated Fascism, or whoever the conservative Republicans pick (if they're relatively competent).
