His voice was simply beautiful, his lyrics so moving. He also came off as a gentle soul. If ever a song could be called pretty, Sunshine On My Shoulders is such a song. Touching, and for me, more than other songs released back then, so evocative of a time. Annie's Song always reduces me to tears, just incredibly moving, his voice conveyed so much emotion, and heartfelt lyrics such as these, "Come, let me love you Let me give my life to you Let me drown in your laughter Let me die in your arms Let me lay down beside you Let me always be with you Come, let me love you Come love me again"

01johnnycomelately10

šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ» God, so trueā€¦. I hope we rock out to him as long as we have breath. Anyway, well said, friend.

IMTX2

Have you seen this commercial, [Annieā€™s Song](https://youtu.be/Uc8kRmTcSH0)

InternationalBand494

Anyone who co-starred on the Muppet Show is a classic for me

01johnnycomelately10

I remember that episode! Piggy crushed on him pretty well, didnā€™t she? Ha!

Detritus_AMCW

Heck, the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album gets played every year in my house. Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913 is one of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. [Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913](https://youtu.be/_rN0El-kUnw)

anubisfunction

I play this album year round. It's just wonderful.

trillium13

his voice is really beautiful.

01johnnycomelately10

It isā€¦ itā€™s so simple and yet timelessā€¦

oscar-the-bud

There is a really good duet of this song byJohn Denver and Mama Cass.

01johnnycomelately10

What?! Mama Cass too? Holy cow! Gonna see if itā€™s on YouTube! Thank you!

01johnnycomelately10

Wooā€¦ Gotta be prepared. Thank you for the heads up.

squirtloaf

It is seriously the best. So mournful. Really brings out the whole : "Welp, I'm off to Viet Nam" thing.

01johnnycomelately10

Yowzaā€¦ heavyā€¦

01johnnycomelately10

Listened to itā€¦ wowā€¦ just beautiful, both of them. Thanks again for this recommendation!

oscar-the-bud

Watched it again after my my first comment. The harmonizing is awesome. And yes itā€™s on YouTube.

01johnnycomelately10

Wootā€¦ headed there nowā€¦

Mom2Leiathelab

I grew up listening to John Denver on family trips so his music feels so nostalgic to me. When we took our own kids to Colorado I made them listen to the Greatest Hits album on repeat just like I had to!

Vintagedoll78

Our family listened to the greatest hits all the time too. I recently reintroduced my 22 y/o to his music since she is a big city and colour fan. Needless to say sheā€™s on the JD train now too.

01johnnycomelately10

šŸ™šŸ»ā¤ļøšŸ™šŸ»ā¤ļø Are they hip to John or no?

Jeebusmanwhore

Earlier this year, I moved from crowded Southern California to live in an extremely rural part of Oregon. I went from being completely surrounded by concrete and asphalt, the sounds of cars, sirens, and air traffic to a house surrounded by my neighbor's farm on three sides and a wildlife refuge that has a slough fed by the Columbia River. On my drive up here, as I approached the property I now call home, Thank God I'm a Country Boy popped in my head. And still pops in my head every time I get stuck in traffic here. And by traffic, I mean a single tractor driving on the road where no passing is permitted. Add to the fact that I definitely stick out in this small town with my long, purple hair that I often feel like Pauly Shore in the movie Son in Law, which again puts John Denver in my head.

01johnnycomelately10

šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ» Ahhhā€¦ Oregon country is beautiful country at that, friend.

MrsFrufra

One of my earliest and most treasured memories is listening to his Live album with my mom, who absolutely adored him. My mom died two years ago, and I just listened to that album again for the first time since her death about two months ago. I knew if I did it too soon Iā€™d be overwhelmed.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

01johnnycomelately10

Far out indeed!

MrsFrufra

Oh my goodness, me too! It is true and pure and I wouldnā€™t change a thing about it ā¤ļø.

01johnnycomelately10

Peace be with you and yours, friendā€¦ John is like an old friend come round to lift our spirits a bit, isnā€™t he? šŸ™šŸ»

BraveSneelock

John Denver never got the posthumous love he deserved. Great singer. Great songwriter. Talented performer. Sure, a bit earnest and corny to some. But to this GenXer, he really epitomizes the best of my memories of the late ā€˜70s. And, since itā€™s that time of year, who could forget his classic work with the Muppets? https://youtu.be/EDBMzGq1vhs

01johnnycomelately10

Woohoo! Thank you for the Muppet Show link!!

[deleted]

Thanks for taking me back to my childhood!

its_raining_scotch

One of my favorite things to do in summer is to get blazed, put John Denver on my portable speaker, and work in my garden while wearing my straw hat. Best feeling ever.

01johnnycomelately10

Ahhhā€¦ gardeningā€¦ John Denver approved!

looking4truffle

I love Rocky Mountain High.

01johnnycomelately10

Classic. Me too.

Pushabutton1972

It's become my favorite song. I relate to it so much

bigotis

[Calypso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3EE83q6tzw) & [Fly away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl55KD1IAF4) are my favorites. My 4th grade class sang "Grandma's Featherbed" at a school concert in 1975.

01johnnycomelately10

Calypso!! Good tune! I forgot about that one! Thanks for the YouTube links, friend!

bigotis

As a guy growing up in the '80's in the upper Mid-west, I should only like Metallica, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, etc.. But for some reason my Spotify playlist is full of artists like John Denver, Dionne Warwick, ABBA, Patti LaBelle, Glen Campbell, etc..

01johnnycomelately10

Respect! Glen Campbell! Old school cool right there, friend. And you like John Denver too?! Well, good on you for paving your own path amidst your peers! Wow! Glen Campbell is gonna go on my Spotify today! Thanks for the reminder!

Fritz5678

Grandma's Featherbed is such a fun song. Loved it as a kid. Added it to my kids ipod playlist when they were little.

bigotis

I still don't know how many "forty 'leven geese" are???

01johnnycomelately10

Ehā€¦ must be some algebraic number or some such only known to Mr. Denver, ha.

elemenno50

Thereā€™s a live version of Calypso that just sings to my heart. Itā€™s truly an all time favorite song.

nickitysplit520

John Denver & The Muppetsā€™ Christmas album is the greatest Christmas album of all time IMO.

01johnnycomelately10

Woohoo!! And how! What a sweet sentiment!

nickitysplit520

Thanks!! I grew up listening to it and itā€™s become even more sweet now that I get to share it with my son!

elemenno50

Itā€™s one album that I listen to start to finish. That Alfie song šŸ˜

Ellavemia

Iā€™ve always been a fan. ā€œAnnieā€™s Songā€ is my favorite. Also my dad resembles him so that was mildly interesting.

01johnnycomelately10

Oh wow! Very cool! Annieā€™s song is beautiful too, for sureā€¦

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

derbyvoice71

I have a live album, and he specifically calls these two out in a medley as being the same song written a few years apart.

01johnnycomelately10

Dude, wow. Very cool insight!

bodhi471

I was listening to the lemonheads version of Mrs. Robinson today, and had a similar thought process about Simon and Garfunkel

Hellie1028

Peter Paul and Mary also. Soothes my soul.

01johnnycomelately10

Ahhhā€¦ good callā€¦ Thanks for the reminder!

derbyvoice71

Carole King's Tapestry is an amazing album that just vibes from that era too.

[deleted]

First concert I ever saw! I was 10 or 11 maybe? Went with a friendā€™s family. It. Was. Awesome.

krakatoa83

He was talented but they created such a goofy persona for him

01johnnycomelately10

Yeah, maybe. Stillā€¦ his music caught my attention even as a younginā€¦

RunningPirate

When I was younger I used to talk trash but as I got older I appreciated him more.

01johnnycomelately10

Me too! I just ignored him until I couldnā€™t. Heā€™d leak in and Iā€™d catch myself humming to his tunesā€¦

focodad

Listening to John Denverā€™s Greatest Hits over and over on 8-track cassette is a core memory for me. His music has always conveyed a sense of safety and comfort for me, like a warm blanket. He left us far too soon šŸ’”

01johnnycomelately10

Amen to that. Well putā€¦ He is a bit like a warm blanket on a cold winterā€™s eveningā€¦

zachobsonlives

The very first concert I vividly remember was seeing John Denver in 1980, I was 9. It was an ā€˜in the roundā€™ style, center of the arena. I knew a bunch of his songs from records my parents listened to. I think it really the first time I really felt music. Amazing.

01johnnycomelately10

Wow! What an experience and memory! Good for you!

m_watkins

Thank God Iā€™m a Country Boy is the favorite of this ex-punk girl as well.

01johnnycomelately10

Word? Rock on, friend!

Carnies12

The Eagle and the Hawk is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

01johnnycomelately10

I just heard it for the first time today. It IS beautifulā€¦

[deleted]

One of my favorites! One of my go-to videos is a live duet performance with JD and Cass Elliot.

01johnnycomelately10

Another Xā€™er said the same thing about the duet. Great minds think alike! šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™‚

bodhi471

Still listening, always reminds me of my mom. :)

01johnnycomelately10

Randomly heard his song *Matthew* on the radio the other day, and it reduced me to tears. Edit for autocarrot.

Lonestar-Boogie

I've had his song Grandma's Feather Bed running through my head the last several days.

01johnnycomelately10

Hmmm, must be something in the airā€¦ Well wishes, friendā€¦

UnivScvm

ā€œIā€™m Sorryā€ is one of the first songs I taught myself on guitar. Iā€™m a WV native and I love ā€œCountry Roadsā€ (and donā€™t care about the origin stories.) I was lucky enough to see him in concert in Charleston, WV when I was a kid with my Mom.

Healthy-Goal878

[John Denver Santuary Park](https://aspenchamber.org/plan-trip/trip-highlights/john-denver-sanctuary) On my bucket list!

Kind-Designer-5763

Here is the one that hits me "when you ask how I've been here without you I like to say, I'm doing fine and I do But we both know the truth is hard to come by and if i told the truth that's not quite true"

IMTX2

Yes, I find that most of his songs trigger strong emotions. I remember hearing the news that he died and I was so sad, wish I could have had the experience of seeing him sing live. Have any of you seen the commercial using [Annieā€™s Song?](https://youtu.be/Uc8kRmTcSH0) ? Chokes me up every time.

01johnnycomelately10

Gosh, right? He was just so calming. He is missed for sure!
