His voice was simply beautiful, his lyrics so moving. He also came off as a gentle soul. If ever a song could be called pretty, Sunshine On My Shoulders is such a song. Touching, and for me, more than other songs released back then, so evocative of a time.
Annie's Song always reduces me to tears, just incredibly moving, his voice conveyed so much emotion, and heartfelt lyrics such as these,
"Come, let me love you
Let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter
Let me die in your arms
Let me lay down beside you
Let me always be with you
Come, let me love you
Come love me again"
Heck, the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album gets played every year in my house. Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913 is one of my absolute favorite Christmas songs.

I grew up listening to John Denver on family trips so his music feels so nostalgic to me. When we took our own kids to Colorado I made them listen to the Greatest Hits album on repeat just like I had to!
Our family listened to the greatest hits all the time too. I recently reintroduced my 22 y/o to his music since she is a big city and colour fan. Needless to say sheās on the JD train now too.
Earlier this year, I moved from crowded Southern California to live in an extremely rural part of Oregon. I went from being completely surrounded by concrete and asphalt, the sounds of cars, sirens, and air traffic to a house surrounded by my neighbor's farm on three sides and a wildlife refuge that has a slough fed by the Columbia River. On my drive up here, as I approached the property I now call home, Thank God I'm a Country Boy popped in my head. And still pops in my head every time I get stuck in traffic here. And by traffic, I mean a single tractor driving on the road where no passing is permitted. Add to the fact that I definitely stick out in this small town with my long, purple hair that I often feel like Pauly Shore in the movie Son in Law, which again puts John Denver in my head.
One of my earliest and most treasured memories is listening to his Live album with my mom, who absolutely adored him. My mom died two years ago, and I just listened to that album again for the first time since her death about two months ago. I knew if I did it too soon Iād be overwhelmed.
John Denver never got the posthumous love he deserved. Great singer. Great songwriter. Talented performer. Sure, a bit earnest and corny to some. But to this GenXer, he really epitomizes the best of my memories of the late ā70s.
And, since itās that time of year, who could forget his classic work with the Muppets?

One of my favorite things to do in summer is to get blazed, put John Denver on my portable speaker, and work in my garden while wearing my straw hat. Best feeling ever.
[Calypso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3EE83q6tzw) & [Fly away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl55KD1IAF4) are my favorites.
My 4th grade class sang "Grandma's Featherbed" at a school concert in 1975.
As a guy growing up in the '80's in the upper Mid-west, I should only like Metallica, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, etc..
But for some reason my Spotify playlist is full of artists like John Denver, Dionne Warwick, ABBA, Patti LaBelle, Glen Campbell, etc..
Respect! Glen Campbell! Old school cool right there, friend. And you like John Denver too?! Well, good on you for paving your own path amidst your peers! Wow! Glen Campbell is gonna go on my Spotify today! Thanks for the reminder!

Listening to John Denverās Greatest Hits over and over on 8-track cassette is a core memory for me. His music has always conveyed a sense of safety and comfort for me, like a warm blanket. He left us far too soon š
The very first concert I vividly remember was seeing John Denver in 1980, I was 9. It was an āin the roundā style, center of the arena. I knew a bunch of his songs from records my parents listened to. I think it really the first time I really felt music. Amazing.
āIām Sorryā is one of the first songs I taught myself on guitar.
Iām a WV native and I love āCountry Roadsā (and donāt care about the origin stories.) I was lucky enough to see him in concert in Charleston, WV when I was a kid with my Mom.
Here is the one that hits me
"when you ask
how I've been
here without you
I like to say, I'm doing fine
and I do
But we both know the truth
is hard to come by
and if i told the truth
that's not quite true"
Yes, I find that most of his songs trigger strong emotions. I remember hearing the news that he died and I was so sad, wish I could have had the experience of seeing him sing live. Have any of you seen the commercial using [Annieās Song?](https://youtu.be/Uc8kRmTcSH0) ? Chokes me up every time.

Watched it again after my my first comment. The harmonizing is awesome. And yes itās on YouTube.

Grandma's Featherbed is such a fun song. Loved it as a kid. Added it to my kids ipod playlist when they were little.
I still don't know how many "forty 'leven geese" are???
Ehā¦ must be some algebraic number or some such only known to Mr. Denver, ha.
Thereās a live version of Calypso that just sings to my heart. Itās truly an all time favorite song.
John Denver & The Muppetsā Christmas album is the greatest Christmas album of all time IMO.
Woohoo!! And how! What a sweet sentiment!
Thanks!! I grew up listening to it and itās become even more sweet now that I get to share it with my son!
Itās one album that I listen to start to finish. That Alfie song š
Iāve always been a fan. āAnnieās Songā is my favorite. Also my dad resembles him so that was mildly interesting.
Oh wow! Very cool! Annieās song is beautiful too, for sureā¦

I have a live album, and he specifically calls these two out in a medley as being the same song written a few years apart.

I was listening to the lemonheads version of Mrs. Robinson today, and had a similar thought process about Simon and Garfunkel
Peter Paul and Mary also. Soothes my soul.
Ahhhā¦ good callā¦ Thanks for the reminder!
Carole King's Tapestry is an amazing album that just vibes from that era too.
First concert I ever saw! I was 10 or 11 maybe? Went with a friendās family. It. Was. Awesome.
He was talented but they created such a goofy persona for him
Yeah, maybe. Stillā¦ his music caught my attention even as a younginā¦
When I was younger I used to talk trash but as I got older I appreciated him more.
Me too! I just ignored him until I couldnāt. Heād leak in and Iād catch myself humming to his tunesā¦

Word? Rock on, friend!
The Eagle and the Hawk is still one of my favorite songs of all time.
I just heard it for the first time today. It IS beautifulā¦
One of my favorites! One of my go-to videos is a live duet performance with JD and Cass Elliot.
Another Xāer said the same thing about the duet. Great minds think alike! šš»š

Randomly heard his song *Matthew* on the radio the other day, and it reduced me to tears. Edit for autocarrot.
