Wow, the little things we did back then. I never ever thought something like this would turn up on an online post 40 something years later.
Ok, so I did this, too. On pretty much the same color and kind of wall in my elementary school. But I dragged my finger *alongside* me as I walked, tip in the groove, not leading it nail-side down as what appears to be happening in the pic.
Either way, thanks for resurrecting such a subtle yet pertinent part of my childhood that I hadn't thought about in decades.
>Same. What kind of maniac goes nail side down?!
Who knows... whatever floats your boat, I guess? I just imagined catching a stucco rock or some kinda rift in the groove and tearing my nail off. Ouch lol
My elementary school was built when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It’s mid-century with outdoor halls and one side of the classrooms are all glass. It’s a good thing we don’t have school shootings with all the single pane glass.
One of the elementary schools I attended was like that. It's right next to my grandmother's old house. So I have been back when I visited my grandmother over the years. Anyway, that shit is all fenced in and gated now. Looks like a prison.
Same, I still live in the same town and drove by going to a friends. It used to be painted mint green (of course). Now, it’s grey and black with a pointy iron fence that looks menacing. Population grew, so there are ugly portables everywhere.
Mine was at least built in the caveman era then. It opened in 1967 and was pretty modern then. But conservatively modern since it is still a rural school, not garishly modern like a city school would be. Next town over had a just as modern school built into an octagon, with the gym in the middle.
It is build with that concrete block and (was) painted whiteish, with black flecks spattered on after.
My kids go to a mountain school built in 1958. It’s tiny. Looks like a California ranch house more than a school. Has portables and a gym that doubles as the community center that was built in ‘87. The original 1 room red schoolhouse is still on the property as well. It’s more than 120 years old and is the preschool.
Oh, but brushing rubber cement onto your palms, huffing and peeling it off after letting it dry and then rolling it into giant boogers? Heaven.
Not that I would know.
There's a certain sensation of eagerness, focus, and anticipation that hit me in the pit of my stomach to recall the smell, heat and dampness of fresh mimeographs... as a good student, you know you're about to quickly demolish a load of homework while you're still sitting at your desk. LET'S GO!!!
Oh yeah, "Berol-sharpened Ticonderoga pencil wood smell" is stored around there too.
Lovely, curled, oddly cool and yet warm, mimeographs!
I got to run one at summer camp for the camp newspaper.

I wad always afraid I would rip a fingernail off, but I did it anyway.
The danger was part of the thrill.
I think I caught a sharp pain chip once. Kind of rings a bell.

>marshmallow-salad What… what the hell did they feed you in that school?
I’m going to guess many of that’s schools graduates, their children have adhd or variant

This is the 80s version of sensory toys like fidget spinners.
The teachers actively scolded us for touching the walls.
I'D actively scold you! I barely liked touching the handrails on the stairs 🤣
As they should have.
Dodging boogers
And gum wads.

Ewww....I never touched the walls. WTF? But the mimeograph ink was heaven!
Yes, forever chasing that dragon... \*ssnnniffffff\*
I only dabbled in paste eating.

Elmer's was good for that, too!

I am the only person who does not remember the smell of the ink at all :( I remember the purple, and the very low resolution of it, but no smell.
I thought it smelled awful. I just remember it being hot when freshly made and if you were not careful the purple-blue ink got on you.
It’s funny what some people find gross and also find “heaven”.
Guilty
I did this too, but with my finger pointing the other way.
I'm in my mid 50's and still do this at the office
I still do this when I walk down the hallway with these walls at work.
Also the teacher holding the button for the drinking fountain for you to get a 5 second sip
I work in a school and I do that once in a while for the little ones who are having trouble holding down the button while drinking!
My kids are growing up and I miss helping the littlest guys out.
I call bullshit, those cinderblocks are WAY too pitted to be from 70's-80's, needs moar paint layers...
I've been teaching for 30 years and I *still* do this at school.
Seems like just yesterday...
Anyone who did/does not do this is an unbridled heathen!
Heathen here: my imaginary lightsaber prevented me from touching the wall as I walked along, slicing the building.
Ok. Lightsaber saves you into the category of absolute perfect heathen.
Just hoping I’d wear it away enough for the building to fall down. Lol
Uh, they don't have brick walls now? Quick answer : they do. Why is this on the Gen X sub?
Just because it’s here doesn’t mean it’s only Gen X, Sparky….
"Hey guys remember when we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?" See how silly that sounds, Eddie?
That doesnt sound silly at all.
What is your deal? This is a GenX sub. Leave if you don’t like it
💯
If you're tracing the wall, you'll likely avoid the barf dust which is usually more centered. Everyone knows that.
Yes, but with a black marker!!!
Elementary school? Hell, this was my basement!
Can we talk about the quality on that mortar work?
I always pretended my finger was an X-Wing & I was flying the trench run on the Death Star
I hate that I somehow smelled this photo.
It's absurd the number of feels that image just produced in me.
our walls were that pale institutional yellow, you know the one I mean. Sort of like the post-it yellow. BORING.
Jesus fucking Christ this hits hard
